I have gone to pick this up so many times but always decided to leave it for ‘another day’, lately this has been all over my newsfeed and I decided to just give it a go. As soon as I started it I wasn’t sure if I was going to love it or loathe it. Bastian is a chauvinistic pig and the first chapter I really disliked him but luckily Bastian grew on me fast!
Bastian is the captain of his ship that takes ‘spoilt rich people’ or so he says where ever they want to go. He is also an alcoholic and doesn’t care about anyone else but himself! One night after getting completely trashed something happens to his ship and it starts to sink. He starts shouting for people but everyone has gone and so he finds himself a life raft… this is where it all gets interesting! Bastian is on this life raft when he sees something in the sea, he realises its a body, the way Bastian was acting I wasn’t sure if he was going to actually save this person.. Luckily he does!
More than once I considered just letting her go because my arms were starting to hurt really, really bad. I didn’t know who she was, but I couldn’t quite manage to intentionally let her go.
This becomes the start of a very hot and heated love/hate relationship between him and Raine, who although at times was naïve she wasn’t at all annoying and I actually thought she was awesome for putting up with Bastian’s moody ass behaviour.
How the fuck was I going to survive with this annoying, smoking hot bitch that I simultaneously wanted to fuck and kill?
The back and fourth banter between these two was brilliant, I actually don’t think I have ever read a guys POV where he has made me laugh so much. You find out a lot about Bastian and his past and I even shed a few tears for him. It was heart breaking and made you understand why he was so moody and wouldn’t let anyone too close! This had some really swoony moments where I had a lot of butterflies and fell a little bit in love with Bastian.
“Every time I look at you, it’s like my chest gets crushed, and I just want to stare at you and hold on to you and tell you everything is going to be all right. I don’t know what this is, Raine. I don’t understand what you’re doing to me.”
“I love you too, Bastian.”
I really liked Raine, yes she asked a lot of questions and yes she was naïve but she is only 20 and if that was me in a life raft with a grumpy ass alcoholic I would be asking questions. I found her pretty damn brave and so loyal and gentle towards Bastian.
So why not 5 stars?
The first half for me was fantastic. I loved being inside Bastian’s head with all his sarcastic moments and not knowing what to say or how to act around Raine. I actually really liked how one minute he was gentle and then literally 5 seconds later she would ask something that to us was normal but would just piss him off and he would snap, I couldn’t help but laugh at his impatient ways! Unfortunately the last half I found Bastian changed and was very insecure, yes he had reasons to be like that but I just found it repetitive and went around circles, he also got pretty needy with Raine and if I was her I would feel a little suffocated. It also got a little slow at times and I found I wasn’t laughing or as interested as much.
I did find this book heart breaking and unique. I love survival type programmes/films but have never read one where it literally was a matter of life or death situation which I found intense and gripping!
I liked the ending of this and it ended where you could leave it at this one or read the second. I’m not sure if I will read the second one as for me Bastian changed a little too much. Saying that I am so pleased I read this and met both Bastian and Raine!
