FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 03/10/17

Friday Stars.13
Life:

This last week, the weather has been all over the place.  Typical Northern Nevada lol.  On Monday, I sent my oldest to school in snow clothes.  And by Wednesday, he didn’t even need a jacket.  It is so gorgeous right now!  While the upper 60’s doesn’t sound warm to this California native, it’s amazing how hot it feels!  Since we’re about a mile high, the moment you step outside you can feel the sun penetrating your face and body.  It’s the best feeling ever.  So the 60’s here, feels like the 70’s did back in California.  I’m so thankful we get to have a little reprieve from jackets and boots for now!  Here’s hoping you all got a reprieve from winter too!

And just a heads up, I may be skipping next Fridays post.  I’m going in for surgery next Tuesday, and my healing is kind of an unknown variable.  I’ve had previous problems with anesthesia and bleeding issues (technically I shouldn’t even be here after the birth of my 1st son), so there will be two doctors working on me in the operating room and I’ve been told to take it easy when I get released from the hospital.  I’m super excited because this surgery is supposed to eliminate chronic pain and complications I currently live with daily.  So while I am very nervous, mainly I’m beyond ecstatic!  I may disappear for a few days, or even a week or so, but I’ll be back before you know it!!

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

♥ Enjoy!

Death, Doom and Detention (Darklight #2) by Darynda Jones

The 2nd book in the trilogy.  In the first book, Death and the Girl Next Door, Ten years ago, Lorelei’s parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.
High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school’s designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can’t have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real?

Upcoming Releases:

The End of Oz (Dorothy Must Die #4) by Danielle Paige

The final book!  In the first book, Dorothy Must Die, I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero. But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a road of yellow brick—but even that’s crumbling.
What happened? Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas. I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I’ve been trained to fight. And I have a mission: Remove the Tin Woodman’s heart. Steal the Scarecrow’s brain. Take the Lion’s courage. And—Dorothy must die.

Hunted (Hunted #1) by Maegan Spooner

Though Yeva grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.
So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.
Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory–a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

✩✮✩✮✩

Beauty of the Beast (Fairy Tale Retellings #1) by Rachel L. Demeter

A BEAST LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF HIS PAST
Reclusive and severely scarred Prince Adam Delacroix has remained hidden inside a secluded, decrepit castle ever since he witnessed his family’s brutal massacre. Cloaked in shadow, with only the lamentations of past ghosts for company, he has abandoned all hope, allowing the world to believe he died on that tragic eve twenty-five years ago.
A BEAUTY IN PURSUIT OF A BETTER FUTURE
Caught in a fierce snowstorm, beautiful and strong-willed Isabelle Rose seeks shelter at a castle—unaware that its beastly and disfigured master is much more than he appears to be. When he imprisons her gravely ill and blind father, she bravely offers herself in his place.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Stripped of his emotional defenses, Adam’s humanity reawakens as he encounters a kindred soul in Isabelle. Together they will wade through darkness and discover beauty and passion in the most unlikely of places. But when a monster from Isabelle’s former life threatens their new love, Demrov’s forgotten prince must emerge from his shadows and face the world once more…
Beauty of the Beast is the first standalone installment in a series of classic fairy tales reimagined with a dark and realistic twist.

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 03/03/17

Friday Stars.13
Life:

Last Friday afternoon, I learned even more about what was happening at my son’s private school.  So my husband and I pulled him out of his Kindergarten class.  In the middle of the year.  What was once a hard decision, became a hell of a lot easier once we learned even more facts that twisted my stomach and is still making me cry to this day.  My heart breaks for those children that were hurt by others their own age, and at the same time I can’t be thankful enough that nothing happened to my little boy.  Okay…….. *wipes tears from eyes and takes deep breath*.  So, he had his first day at public school this last Tuesday.  Oh my gosh, I was SO nervous for him.  I didn’t even sleep the night before, and the whole day he was at school I was a bundle of nerves.  And when I picked him up, he was so happy.  It’s only been a few days, but each day he tells me all about what happened and the new friends he’s making.  I couldn’t be more thankful and grateful that this has worked out better than I ever could have imagined.  While there is a slight hiccup, he’s exhausted because of the longer school days, I’m hoping that will get easier in the coming weeks.  His safety and his happiness are my top priorities, and I’m so thankful that we have found both of these at his new school!

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 02/24/17

Friday Stars.13
Life:

I’m making the hard decision of whether I should move my oldest son from private to public school.  There’s been some things that have happened in the last month, to other kids there (bullying and something else I can’t write about), that has made me lose my trust in the administration, certain teachers on their staff and some of the students.  A few parents have pulled their kids out of the school.  And I’m struggling with – do I move my son from a small class size of now 12 with a teacher he loves to a new teacher with a class of 24, but he’ll still know 1-2 kids in his new class?  He’s not in their after school care program, so he won’t be around the children I’m concerned with bullying, since they are Pre-K and he’s Kindergarten.  And he doesn’t play or ever interact with a child in his class that I’m also concerned about in regards to an issue I can’t write about.  So I believe it won’t affect him.  Yet he’s in a school with toxic people and children.  And while I know there will always be problems wherever we go, it’s private school and I’m paying for him to go there.  But it all breaks my heart.  I didn’t send him to school today, and I’m definitely going to use the next 3 days to think through everything.  So this last week I have been snuggling with my children more, here’s a picture of Jacob and I doing that here, and I’m looking forward to another 3 day weekend with my boys. ♥  Here’s hoping you aren’t struggling with hard decisions this week too.

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

The final book!  In the first book, A Darker Shade of Magic, Kell is one of the last Travelers-magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes, connected by one magical city.
There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad king-George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered-and where Kell was raised alongside Rhys Maresh, the rougish heir to a flourishing empire. White London-a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 02/17/17

Life:

This week my sister and her husband were supposed to be here for a visit.  For 5 days long, eeks!  I was looking forward to snowboarding, spending time catching up in person and laughing hysterically together.  But she is sooooo sick and had to stay in California.  Boo.  Her visits are always so therapeutic and I kid you not when I say we laugh constantly.  My stomach always hurts.  It’s the best kind of hurt.  So while I was scanning through my few thousand pictures on Facebook – I’m so bad and post a ridiculous amount of pictures on there lol – I finally decided to post a personal one on Twitter.  It’s us together last fall (she looks super cute, but my smile is all funky lol).  If you want to check out my reminiscing, click here.  🙂  So yup, that’s about it!  Here’s hoping you had a much more successful week than I did!

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

5 Stars!  But from the moment I picked this up, I knew it was just what I needed. Light-hearted, funny, heavy on swoon…

Adorkable (ah-dor-kuh-bul): Descriptive term meaning to be equal parts dorky and adorable. For reference, see Sally Spitz.
Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she’s done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There’s only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take.
Her solution: she needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.
Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around-hottie, and Sally’s best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He’d do anything for Sal–even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she’s “more than pretty,” and expertly kissing her at parties.
The problem: Sally’s been in love with Becks all her life–and he’s completely clueless.
This book features two best friends, one special edition Yoda snuggie, countless beneath-the-ear kisses and begs the question:
Who wants a real boyfriend when faking it is so much more fun?

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.
Only he doesn’t come. No one does.
Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn at first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

making faces amy harmon Making Faces by Amy Harmon

Ambrose Young was beautiful. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She’d been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have…until he wasn’t beautiful anymore.
Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl’s love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior’s love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 02/10/17

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 02/10/17

Life:

I have come to realize that my youngest son, Jacob, has an obsession with Ranch Dressing from Trader Joes.  And I kid you not, he eats it on everything.  Spanakopita, hot dogs, corn dogs, meat sandwiches, pizza, bean cheese quesadilla, etc…he puts ranch dip on all of it.  And lately he has been asking to have it with his pasta and chicken.  I try my hardest not to cringe, but *shudders*.  I just have to keep reminding myself that when he was a toddler, he would put chocolate chip cookies in his spaghetti, olives in his ice cream etc.  Seriously lol.  The only different food tendency I have is that I can drink Orange Juice with anything.  Even pasta.  And for some reason that grosses out my husband.  So maybe Jacob doesn’t fall too far from the tree. 🙂  Do you have any weird food tendencies too?

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

♥ Enjoy!

Just Finished and Loved:

guardian-of-secrets-brenda-drakeGuardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2) by Brenda Drake Jen’s Review

5 Stars! I laughed, I fell in love, I sobbed and I closed the book with the hugest smile on my face!

The story continues!  In the first book, Thief of Lies, Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels-magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books-rescue them from a demonic hound.
Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

frost-blood-elly-blakeFrostblood (Frostblood Saga #1) by Elly Blake Chelsea’s Review

5 Stars!  The first chapter broke my heart immediately making it clear from the start that the author didn’t mind getting her hands dirty. I like that. I like that a LOT, and, even more than that, I respect it immensely.

Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.

Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating–yet irresistible–Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her–and from the icy young man she has come to love.

under-rose-tainted-skies-louise-gornallUnder Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise GornallChelsea’s Review

4.5 Stars!  Finding an authentic novel that not only shows you a deep, introspective look at a mental illness, but also lets you see that people understand, that people can be kind, that falling in love is a possible thing, no matter the restrictions or stipulations, is so very rare, and it’s just as captivating as any other love story. I find that fantastic and just plain beautiful.

Norah has agoraphobia and OCD. When groceries are left on the porch, she can’t step out to get them. Struggling to snag the bags with a stick, she meets Luke. He’s sweet and funny, and he just caught her fishing for groceries. Because of course he did.
Norah can’t leave the house, but can she let someone in? As their friendship grows deeper, Norah realizes Luke deserves a normal girl. One who can lie on the front lawn and look up at the stars. One who isn’t so screwed up.
Readers themselves will fall in love with Norah in this poignant, humorous, and deeply engaging portrait of a teen struggling to find the strength to face her demons.

love-story-lauren-layneLove Story (Love Unexpectedly #3) by Lauren Layne

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.
After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.
