Synopsis:

Now includes bonus novella ELIXIR

History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time.

Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her eighteenth birthday—to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"—which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time—she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she’s caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed… and destroyed. Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

A Covenant novella from Aiden’s POV?? Yes, please! While Deity ended with (shocker) a brutal cliffhanger, Jennifer decided to take pity on our poor souls and write a novella that kinda eased that ache until Apollyon comes out next week. This story showed how deeply Aiden loves Alex and how he would go to the ends of the earth to save her. He goes as far to say he’d die for her, and that in itself is an admirable trait.

Throughout the story he literally does anything he can to do what Alex would want in this situation, and it’s as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. He ultimately has to make an unsavory decision, but what’s for the best. At the end we are left with one very clear point: He will fight to the death for her and will take out anyone, even a God, to keep Alex alive.

I loved Elixir, and I would suggest it to anyone who has read this series. I hate reading novellas, but I loved this story and it left me feeling a little more hopeful towards Alex’s tremulous situation. Now I can breathe a little easier and hope for the best for Aiden and Alex in the next two books to come 🙂

Synopsis:

Fate isn't something to mess with and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex's power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex's connection to Seth isn't the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole an Apollyon can't be killed theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer or she might become the God Killer herself.

Well. Thank Gods I checked Goodreads Saturday, or I would have missed Jen’s Apollyon early release announcement. What a shame that would have been, for I finished this amazing novel in less than 24 hours. I don’t know how much gushing is truly appropriate without becoming obsessive, so I will make it simple: Jen has done it again. She kidnapped my mind and kept me prisoner for a chunk of the weekend, making it impossible for me to think of doing anything else.

We begin where we left off at the end of Deity and Elixir. If you haven’t read Elixir, I truly feel you are missing out on some super sweet moments, and there are a few references you won’t get in Apollyon unless you read the novella.

Anyway, we start with Alex in a cage, fighting to be free so she can connect with “her Seth”. Don’t get me started on just how wrong typing that was. She struggles to both break free from those holding her and also from Seth’s voice in her head, trying to find her location.

And then we have Aiden-the sweetest, most loyal guy ever. He hasn’t given up on Alex even when everyone else has. He even goes as far as to piss off the Gods to protect her-he literally punched a God in the face in Elixir…so adorable….or at least I think so. I don’t even know what to say to do him justice. He is willing to risk it all: his life, his brother, and everyone and everything inbetween. He loves her more than his own life, and I can’t help but to fall a little more in love with him with each new installment.

Packed with suspense and peril, my eyes were glued to the pages within this novel. I love suspense in romances, I feel like it’s the perfect touch to an already perfect story in most cases. My only problem with Apollyon? I didn’t think the cliffhanger was that bad. I always complain or comment on these horrible cliffhangers, and here I am begging for a whopper that would scar me until the final installment comes out in December. I found something out about myself after I realized that I wanted more shock factor for an ending-I am apparently a masochist-at least in these action/romance novels by Jen I have grown to love. I don’t know what that says about me…

So now we wait. What will come of Alex and Aiden? Will there be an epic battle for Earth? What will come of Seth? These are all plot lines I cannot wait to find out about or finalize, and until then, I will eagerly await the release of Origin in August, Sentinel in December, and Frigid in July-all by Jen, all in the forefront of my mind for surely the whole summer. I can only hope I stay sane until at least one of these novels is released. Sigh. The wait begins.

An excellent installment to a surprisingly addictive series. I came upon Infernal Devices in a discussion for another book entirely. It too had a love triangle in it, and some of the girls happened to mention TID and it’s apparently happy ever after for all characters involved. Seeing as how I am becoming increasingly aware of how much I love drama, to an extent, in novels, I had to hop on over and see what TID was all about. Upon reading the synopsis and seeing the cover of Clockwork Angel, I realized that I had passed it up months before. Boy do I ever see the error in my ways.

After the last novel, Tessa is now a permanent fixture in the Institute after Charlotte asked her to stay. We get to see how Tessa is affected after Will’s unforgiveable actions and remarks, and how close her and Jem become because of it. With less time being spent daydreaming about Will(hardly), Tessa finds herself spending more and more time with Jem, thus forming a bond between them. I like both guys a lot. Will has hurt Tessa quite a bit, but underneath it all, I love him because he has a sweet side to him that can’t be entirely hidden, and a passion for his work and also for Tessa. Jem is always there for Tessa, and it becomes increasingly clear he has strong feelings for her. Everyone around him (aside from Will) can see his feelings for her as clear as day, for he wears his heart on a sleeve.

I enjoyed every adventure and could hardly put the book down. I always seemed to be on the edge of my seat and reading at the speed of light-and I still wasn’t reading fast enough. I also adore how each character has such raw passion for who they love and what they believe in. It is hard not to be attracted to each guy when they so obviously are attracted to and care for Tessa. Don’t even get me started on Henry and Charlotte; they definitely add some adorable scenes to the story and make you smile when you least expect it.

So all in all, I really don’t have many words. It is just one of those stories where you feel compelled to tell people about it and insist they read it. I found myself goofily smiling at the pages from Will’s snarky remarks and funny scenarios he found himself in. He always seems to have the funniest facial expressions, and with Jem egging him on, it only fuels the fire. Now I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I can’t wait to see how it all ends and ultimately who ends up with whom.

Oooh how this book unraveled me. As with all love triangles, I was skeptical as to how it could be accomplished tastefully. Was I completely satisfied with the conclusion of this beautiful trilogy? Yes and no: it depends if I count the epilogue. If I were to count the epilogue as the ending, then no….I really don’t know how I feel, but it’s not 100% satisfied. On the one hand, it was sweet how “the wheel came full turn”. On the other hand, I felt a tad….what’s the word? Unsettled. That’s it-unsettled. Now, without the epilogue, I felt it was tied up nicely and she was with who she should have always been with. I loved both guys, certainly, but one was always the favorite in my heart.

A tearjerker at it’s finest, Clockwork Princess made me bawl like a baby. I loved how both boys were willing to sacrifice everything to help/save/court Tessa. They were both adorable and made me want to jump into this story and solve their little love triangle problem by inserting myself promptly within the pages.

The love and passion that drove Will on his mission to save Tessa was so endearing and I fell more in love with him with each mile he traveled. And Jem, poor Jem. His struggles are so trying and you feel yourself rooting for that impossible cure to be found. His love for Tessa is pure, unrelenting, and undying. His loyalty to Will as his other half is beautiful.

Then there’s the bittersweet, happy ending. As heartbreaking as it is sweet, tears of both happiness and sadness were pouring from my tearducts. I don’t know when I fell so in love with this trilogy, but it knocked me off my feet hard and fast, and I am so sad it’s over. I truly do wish there was another way for the epilogue to have unfolded, because I felt that it took the validity of her love for one particular man and kind of laughed at it’s memory. Not completely..but enough that it left a sour taste in my mouth. You’ll see..it is both beautiful and heartbreaking-all depends on how the reader looks at it. And no-the “memory of his love” is not a spoiler-so many things happen in this book that it couldn’t possibly be explained/ruined by that particular comment. No worries.

Finally, I end this review with a shout out to Cecily. I absolutely adored her character, while at the end of the last book I didn’t want her to necessarily be a part of the story. I LOVE her. I love Gabriel and Gideon and Charlotte and Henry and Magnus-I love them ALL. It is a sad day when I end a series and have to say goodbye to each new character I have fallen in love with, but that time has come, and I am happy to say this is a new favorite series of mine. The journey from book one where Tessa smashed a vase upon Will’s head to the bittersweet epilogue has been a tremulous one, but I couldn’t be happier to have been a part of these amazing stories-I will most definitely re read them one day, hopefully soon, if my poor heart can handle it.

BOOK REVIEW – Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout

BOOK REVIEW – Obsession by Jennifer L. ArmentroutObsession (Lux #4.5)

The grass is always greener on the other side, right? Well, not that it was any better than the Luxen side, but I still thoroughly enjoyed Jen’s newest addition to the Luxen world of West Virginia. As I have stated multiple times, I am an avid fan of Jen’s writing, and at the moment I am up shit creek without a paddle, because all her series are stuck on cliffhangers until the next installments come out….kill me now.

So we enter Obsession with the notion that we are going to see the bad boy side of things, and while it definitely delivered, we also saw a side to Hunter that was sweet and vulnerable. I never once compared Hunter to the Arum we all know from the Lux series. He was a completely different person *ahem* alien than what we know the Arum to be. I didn’t know whether I could adjust to the other side of the spectrum, because, let’s face it, while the Luxen bash the Arum, the Arum bash the Luxen. I did ultimately have a hard time with this, because it has been instilled in us to hate the shadow guys, but I did my best to be impartial in these areas where people were pointing fingers, otherwise the story would be hard to enjoy.

And yes…oh yes…we got to see our favorite “good” badboy Luxen. It was minuscule, so tiny, but it was enough to make me grin like the Chesire cat in Alice in Wonderland. Jen weaved the stories together so that this book was after Opal, so you can only imagine who our friendly Luxen boy was visiting and who it was about. My heart constricted all over again..just saying…but I will refrain from spoiling…I am strong.

Hunter and Serena had an adorable relationship and it was utterly compelling. I couldn’t put the book down and devoured each and every page. It was a dark, erotic read that I had never seen from Jen before, and I have to say I liked it. Who ever knows if an author so widely known for her YA novels could excel at a steamy read, but how I ever wondered is beyond me..even her YA novels are steamy and exciting. So this leaves me at my final point. Jen is an awesome writer, and none of her books could be labeled badly. I can’t wait until her next masterpiece comes out in July, and until then, this little tidbit better sate me.

****
People who have not read the Lux series are probably horribly confused by this review, but I figure if you haven’t read the Lux series, why would you be looking at this one anyway? Where’s the fun if you don’t already know what’s going on a little? 🙂
