Synopsis:

Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came. She can't believe Daemon stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

Review:

*Spoilers if you haven’t read the previous books in the Lux Series*

Now THAT is how you finish a series! Opposition was fast paced, completely addicting, had me on the edge of my seat and the twists knocked the breath out of me. Some of those twists broke me and the tears refused to stop spilling down my face. And other twists had me crying tears of joy. Katy and Daemon had so much on the line and I was terrified for what the future had in store for them. How could they ever get past the disaster that was the ending of Origin? Daemon, Katy, Dee, Archer and the rest of the crew will always have a special place in my heart, and I will always treasure their journey in the Lux Series.

Katy – I was probably one step away from going to that dark corner in the room and rocking back and forth, but I couldn’t break down, and I couldn’t sleep. Not when Daemon was out there somewhere, and not when the whole world was on the verge of…hell, turning into a dystopia, like one of those novels I used to read.

Daemon and his siblings are gone. Daedalus was correct. And yet the world is still spinning, but how? Daedalus wasn’t lying when they said they were preparing for the Luxen to descend upon Earth and wipe out mankind. Daedalus wasn’t just creating fear when they asked Katy which side Daemon and his siblings would stand by. Katy, Beth, Archer and Luc have been left behind and finally decide that first things first, they have to help Beth. There are things every woman needs while being pregnant, regardless of whether they are caring a freaky little Origin or not, so off to the store Archer and Katy go. Not everything can go as planned, and while Katy and Archer are in the store the Luxen attack. These aren’t the friendly Luxen that we have grown to know and love, they are ruthless, heartless killers that are devoid of any emotion. Katy gets caught in the crossfire and Dawson appears and blasts Katy across the room. She was attacked by someone she considered a friend. Waking up, she finds herself in the lair of the aliens that have invaded that town. And things are all wrong. Dee isn’t right and Daemon treats her like when he first met her. They are just as cold as the newly arrived Luxen. The only reason her life was spared is because her death would equal Daemon’s death. Well, and besides the fact that Daemon would lose his play toy. While Katy’s heart is breaking into a million pieces, where will they all go from here?

Katy – He lowered his head until our mouths were so close that we were the same air. It was all so unfair. From the moment he’d disappeared, all I wanted was to see him again, to touch him and to love him, and now I didn’t really know what was standing in front of me.

This is one of my favorite series. Daemon Black will always be the one that I will hold all other BBFs against. His infuriating smug sexiness and bad-ass sexy self was so swoon worthy. And his need to take care of the ones he loved, above all else, was perfection in my eyes. And Katy turned into someone that I not only truly respected but is one of my favorite heroines. She was kick-ass, never took anyone’s crap and I loved every snarky comment that came out of her mouth! But Katy and Daemon together, OH WOW. Like I’ve said before, they are giggle inducing, their chemistry is through the roof hot, and they still have those moments that make you sigh and melt into a puddle. When you mix that in with secondary characters that will forever have a place in your heart and a storyline that was addicting, well, that creates books that are nearly impossible to put down. This is a book and a series that I cannot recommend highly enough! You can count on it that I will treasure all of the days that I will re-read this series again and again!

Katy – The kiss…holy alien babies, the kiss was a raw combination of lust and possession. There was a taste of desperation and anger as our teeth clanged, but the hand against my cheek was so gentle, barely there, and all those emotions were in the kiss…

They had been sent to Earth as living test subjects, the first people to set foot on the planet in three hundred years. But they were mistaken.
Some people had never left.

This book is…no. Just no. Everything I enjoyed about book one was the glaring problem in book two. It’s like everything amplified until I couldn’t stand it anymore.

It started up somewhat like the other, but this time, they were already on Earth. I liked this. It made me happy that they were somewhat used to the land and were able to just move forward instead of that stagnant fear that kept them from doing too much in book one. But OMG I just could. Not. Do. The Relationship. Drama in this one. Like…Clarke-You JUST met this dude. The title of this book is literally Day 21 and you LOVE him??? Oh, and he can just say whatever he wants to you…right? Then, because it was said in a moment of passionate fury, it’s okay. Hmmm. Riiiiiight. I lost all my respect for Clarke. All of it.

We aren’t born for ourselves alone.

So, that makes it official: The only original characters I like are Wells and Glass. And the only story I cared about was Wells’s. He is still my favorite character and really the only reason I carried on.

Wells knew that even the greatest leaders make mistakes.

Now, that isn’t to say I won’t read book three or say that the television series wouldn’t be perfect with all the drama, but as a book? No. My mind has whiplash from the lukewarm to boiling to freezing feelings. And my biggest problem with the WHOLE book? The blame. My God, the blame. Bellamy, that douche (I REALLY edited that-on a sidenote), blames EVERYONE at least once. Could he be any whinier?? Sheesh. And Clarke-Wah. Call the WAHmbulance. Just wow. I can’t even.

So. Wow. I can’t believe how angry I began to get near the end of the book. How can the first book’s beautiful portrayal of love lost and betrayal and hope be turned into this convoluted mess of teen angst and soap opera drama? There were so many good things that were touched on: eerie, creepy ideas that will make a good sell in the next book, Wells’s new interest (LOVE HER), and even the idea that everyone will likely be reunited in book three…..but even that creepy storyline I mentioned didn’t overshadow all the fail for the rest of the book. So, aside from the fact that I think all this would be awesome on TV and that I’ll likely seek out book three eventually, there really were no remnants from book one that were held sacred in this one. So….that’s it. That’s my spiel…

OH! And I mean, look at that cover!! How awesome is that?? How can a book cover be so cool and the book…not. Ugh.

Well, that was not what I expected-at all. This has such a low rating and only a small amount of people liked it. I find that I am in the group that found enjoyment out of this. No, it wasn’t a completely action packed dystopian and no there wasn’t a TON that went on, but I guess, for once, the romance was enough.

It would be better to lie. His father would have an easier time believing that Wells had been carrying out a dare. Or perhaps he could try to pretend he had been on drugs. Either of those scenarios would be more palatable to the Chancellor than the truth-that he’d risked everything for a girl.

Some people immediately disregard ARC reviews because they likely feel that we are stretching the truth so we can receive more copies in exchange for our ‘honest’ thoughts-well, I can assure anyone who reads this-I am always honest. I may sometimes not 100% know which solid star to stick with, because there are a lot of gray areas for me, but I always say what I feel in my reviews-I have rated so many books five stars only to add a couple paragraphs of what bothered me with the story, because not many stories are perfect.

If you stay, I’ll do whatever you want. I’ll quit the band, go with you to New York. But if you need me to go away, I’ll do that, too. I was talking to Liz and she said maybe coming back to your old life would just be too painful, that maybe it’d be easier for you to erase us. And that would suck, but I’ll do it. I can lose you like that if I don’t lose you today. I’ll let you go. If you stay.

Admission time: I never had any intention of reading this book…like ever. The movie trailer didn’t appeal to me, the book didn’t speak to me, and yet……I saw reviews for book two. And I already knew what happened because, well, I’m me after all. So when I started to see these awesome reviews for the second book and began to hear about all of the angst and emotion brought forth from book two, I decided I had to read it. Have any of you ever done that? Have you ever heard that book two, or whatever book in the series, is awesome and all of a sudden you’re willing to read the first book just to get to book two??? Well…I officially have and I damn well hope it’s worth it, because, again, I warned you myself.

“But I’d understand if you chose love, Adam love, over music love. Either way you win. And either way you lose. What can I tell you? Love’s a bitch.

I think that is one thing I can really brag about. I don’t brag much, but when it comes to this, I’ve gotten really good: I know what will ultimately work for me and what won’t-book wise (and hey, movies, too). I knew book one wasn’t my style and I was right, but in a super weird way, I’m stoked for book two.

The glaring problem with the book: Mia. I have never so strongly not related to a character. Okay, that’s a lie, but at least I normally can find something to relate to. Not with Mia, and I’m not sure why. I just felt like, as a person, even before the surgery, she was a stick in the mud. Always questioning Adam’s love or affection for her, never trying to fully immerse herself into his lifestyle or his shows when all he does is attempt to understand her and her ‘dark’ humor. I dunno. That relationship seemed a wee bit one-sided, in my opinion.

I’m exhausted, but at the same time Adam’s visit has left me…I don’t know what. Agitated. Anxious. Awake, definitely awake. Though I couldn’t feel it when he touched me, his presence stirred me up anyhow.

And then the music aspect just…bored me. Even it didn’t outshine the sullen, childish thoughts that Mia continually replayed in her head. I never have been one to connect to the music aspect of a novel, but in this story I longed to be pulled deep into the music Mia played but never once felt a twang of connection. It’s almost as if her thoughts overshadowed each moment and took the light out of each shining circumstance. Seriously. Mia ruined every moment for me that was supposed to be meaningful or inspirational or a key point to the story.

And Adam. He had me at ‘I saved two weeks’ delivery tips for those.’ A-DOR-A-BLE. He stole my heart in that moment. And that’s not to say he didn’t do more swoony, heart-stuttering things, but that was the one that made my heart go thump…thump…thump. And, of course, I’d be a liar if I said the angsty moments when he was devastated and crushed that Mia might not make it didn’t become my favorite moments of the whole story. In those moments, I felt all the emotion I was missing throughout the rest of the novel. But, and the problem is, those moments were so far and few between. I literally ached for those moments because the rest of the time I didn’t feel near the connection. So…that’s the problem: Not enough Adam.

“I can’t wrap my mind around the notion of you not getting old, having kids, going to Julliard, getting to play that cello in front of a huge audience, so that they can get the chills the way I do every time I see you pick up your bow, every time I see you smile at me.

All in all I never thought I would love or cherish this book….but I did hope for that surprising twist of events where I inevitably fell in love with the story and had to eat crow. But, like I thought, this didn’t happen. I liked it more than I thought I would, but I didn’t connect like I had hoped. So, it’s a toss up, and giving more or less than three would be unfair to my mixed up thoughts. I liked, but didn’t love. Hopefully book two will rectify that.

Maybe I’d once dreamed of a perfect Gardnerville too, but I’m older now and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s always a price to be paid.
Always.

There really really really isn’t a way to express how I feel about this book and there is literally no shelf to place this on because I can’t even explain it without spoilers galore. It was unique, engaging, confusing as hell and altogether heartbreaking. I don’t quite know when I started to feel for this main character or even her elusive sister, Piper, but at the end of it all…I had tears in my eyes and a deep ache in my heart. I didn’t expect it, either. All of a sudden the conclusion came about and I was completely fine, then out of nowhere I felt this tingling sensation in my eyes and an ache in my gut. And I think that’s where my respect for this book really started to settle in.
