*4.5 Stars!*

I am on fire. A golden statue alight, flames licking around me, melting the snow into puddles at my feet, heating Juneau’s face and reddening her nose and cheeks. She leans in closer until her lips are touching mine. And as she kisses me I disperse into a million tiny flames, sparks flying up into the cold winter air and diffusing once they hit the starry night sky.

Life, as I’ve been telling all my lovely GR friends lately, apparently is not a wish granting factory. I’ve been seeing that a lot lately and I have been in one of those totally depressed, funky moods where yeah, I’m liking books just fine but, I’m not in the best place about it. So when I looked at my Ipad and was trying to decide which dystopian to tackle (that was-and is-what I was in the mood for) I had three or four loaded and ready to go-I narrowed it down to two, and then ultimately chose this one because I’ve been excited about it the most for the longest time-and I chose correctly. I had a smile on my face the minute that Miles and Juneau met-and it very rarely left my face throughout the entirety of the novel.

Life is easier in black and white. It’s the ambiguity of a world defined in grays that has stripped me of my confidence and left me powerless.

These two are complete polar opposites-you couldn’t find a more comical pairing. One lives off the land and is in tune with nature while the other is privileged and pampered and lives in a world where everything has always been handed to him on a silver platter. I loved the dynamics of their relationship and everything in-between. There was no insta-love (GAG) and they were both (knowingly) using each other to get what they needed-it just turns out that they want the exact opposite thing….go figure.

“The guys who are following you…are they dangerous?” Miles asks finally.
“Well, normally I would say that Whit wouldn’t hurt a flea. But from what Poe here told me-”
“Poe?” Miles interrupts.
“The raven,” I say.
“You named the bird?” Miles asks, his voice tinged with a note of hysteria.

I think the biggest reason why I loved this book so much is because it wasn’t full on dystopian and it didn’t try to be. I love this genre, but sometimes authors try way too hard and it doesn’t portray quite what they want to. So, when this didn’t turn out to be a cut and dry survival story, I was kind of excited. Basically, Juneau left her clan to go hunt for food-they live secluded and ‘protected’ from the dystopian like world outside their living site from the after effects of World War III….and when Juneau returns, her dad and the whole clan included have disappeared. She knows she must try to find them immediately with her knowledge of the land and way of Kara (not even going to explain-it’s not that complicated but I would still mess it up). But when she leaves the confines of her camp and starts to get farther and farther away from what she’s always known, she finds out about the biggest betrayal she never would have imagined-there was no WWIII and she has been living a lie. And what’s worse, people are after her-maybe even one of the people she’s trusted her entire life.

“Has it shit on my shirt yet?” Miles asks, his nose wrinkling like he doesn’t really want to know the answer.
“Birds don’t shit while they’re sitting down. They would be sitting in their excrement, and if you haven’t noticed-which of course you haven’t, you”-I can’t think of an insult that fits the bill-“city boy, birds are clean.” I don’t know why I’m getting all defensive about Poe, but I can’t help correcting Mile’s glaring misconception.
“Secondly,” Miles continues, ignoring my argument, “a little while ago, you confirmed my long-held belief that birds don’t talk. Yet you just said that Poe”-he pauses-“I can’t believe I just called it that…this bird told you something.”
“I shouldn’t have said ‘told.’ I should have said ‘showed.'”
“Because that makes a difference?”

Miles lives a life of debauchery and opulence-he repeatedly causes problems in school and has finally been kicked out-a month before graduation. When he hears his father is looking for a girl who is the key to a drug he wants, Miles knows he is more than capable of finding a girl who knows nothing of the city and is virtually a stranger to the world. All he wants is his father’s approval and if he can get it by bringing the girl back in for questioning, he will do anything he can to get that accomplished. But what happens when he meets the girl and travels with her on the journey to find her clan? He starts to get to know her and see what kind of person she is. She’s as clueless as he is about the whole thing-what if his father is wrong and is after an innocent girl….what will he do then? And even more than that, what will he do when he starts to fall for this crazy girl who eats innocent wildlife and forages in the woods and is the complete opposite of his personality-what if she’s exactly what he’s been looking for his whole life: a place where he feels like he belongs. What then?

The touch of our skin sets off a reaction in me. I am immediately awake…100 percent present. And it feels like a whirlwind of thorns is whipping around in my chest, stinging me all over from the inside. That makes it sound painful. It isn’t. It’s the kind of itching sensation that makes you want to do something crazy. That spurs you forward to act on an idea you didn’t even know was in your head.

The dynamic of this story wholly worked for me and there were rarely any parts that bored me. There was information to take in at every twist and turn, but I never felt like I was getting info-dumped. It’s hard to find that in stories-that balance where there’s just enough cute, sweet, tough, travel, info….peril. It’s a delicate process and while I do wish the peril was amped up a bit, I still thought it was wonderfully done and I had hardly a complaint throughout the entire process.

It’s not like she’s wearing a dress. She just has on a pair of black jeans and a red V-neck shirt. But for once they actually fit. Juneau’s not skinny, and you wouldn’t exactly say muscular. But something in between. She’s so much shorter than me that I could easily pick her up. Of course, I refrain since I don’t feel like being punched.

So, all in all, a total win in my book-it takes a lot to make me completely happy, but this book got as close to perfect as I’ve seen in a while. When I’m in a foul mood it is quite a process to make me smile, much less laugh, so when ATE succeeded in both, I knew I would be sad to see it end. Speaking of which-that end?? Awesooooommmeeeeeee! I can’t wait until book two.

Synopsis:

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life-form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can't deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren't a complication she wants, she can't stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she's drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can't stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Review:

To be honest? The first time I read Obsidian, I only liked it. I struggled with understanding Daemon’s douche-baggery ways and his hot and cold feelings towards Katy only frustrated the ever loving daylights out of me. I put the series aside (shocker, I know!), and then one day I ended up seeing this book on sale. I thought I’d give the series another shot and boy am I SO thankful I did! THIS is the book that sucked me back into this amazing series! THIS is the book that allowed me to gain so much insight and understanding into Daemon’s plight. After finishing Shadows, I desperately had to read the whole series! Lux ultimately became my favorite series ever, Daemon is THE BBF that I compare all others too, and JLA is now my favorite author!

This…this was intense. More so than the first time she kissed a boy. The kicker was they weren’t even touching. She didn’t even know him.

This book is so much more than a novella introducing you to the characters and setting the scene for Obsidian. You become swept away in the love story of Dawson and Bethany. Bethany is a girl who has been forced to leave behind her friends and start anew, all in the of family. Dawson is an alien who is trapped in every sense that is possible. Being monitored by the DOD, being told who to mate by their Elder’s, having to hide who they are from the public and always knowing that if they become too attached to a human that the DOD will make the human disappear. Dawson is frustrated at the unfairness that is his and his siblings life. So what is Dawson to do when he can’t help but become infatuated with this human girl? Their love story had me constantly grinning and of course I fell head over heels in love with Dawson. You also come to learn about Dawson’s sibling, Dee and Daemon, who are both in their own right addicting!

She. Spoke. To. Him. First. It was like winning the lottery, getting laid, and climbing the highest cliff all rolled into one. But he needed to play it cool, because he was trending into lame-o land at a quick pace.

Of course I loved this book. I became so intimately attached to the characters and their world in West Virginia. I spent a good portion of Shadows smiling and then that ending? That ending ruined me. I bawled my eyes out, and then the moment they were dry I started Obsidian. This is a brilliantly executed novella, and I will definitely be recommending it to all of my friends who haven’t read the Lux series yet!

Synopsis:

In the riveting conclusion to the acclaimed dystopian series, a boy and girl caught in the chaos of war face devastating choices that will decide the fate of a world. As a world-ending war surges around them, Todd and Viola face monstrous decisions. The indigenous Spackle, thinking and acting as one, have mobilized to avenge their murdered people. And as the ceaseless Noise lays all thoughts bare, the projected will of the few threatens to overwhelm the desperate desire of the many. The consequences of each action, each word, are unspeakably vast: To follow a tyrant or a terrorist? To save the life of the one you love most, or thousands of strangers? To believe in redemption, or assume it is lost? Becoming adults amid the turmoil, Todd and Viola question all they have known, racing through horror and outrage toward a shocking finale. Includes “Snowscape,” a short story by Patrick Ness.

Review:

Read with Chelsea (shut up, shut up, shut up!) 😉

Yet again, Patrick Ness has my emotions all over the map. I loved the characters and the way the story moved at such a fast pace. I loved the alternating voices telling the story and how your view of what is truly evil can change in the blink of an eye. But again, I struggled with parts of this book. All of the doom and gloom, endless war and suffering made my heart hurt. I ached for those struggling and in pain, and it seemed as though we never got a break from that. And then that ending? I was definitely left wanting more, A LOT more. I’m all for imagining what happens after you close the book but with that ending, there were too many what ifs. I wanted something more concrete and solid. But all in all, I enjoyed this series. It was a little outside of my comfort zone, but I will definitely be thinking about this series for a long, long time.

Yes, I think. Here it comes. The end of everything. The end of it all. – Todd

War is coming! The battle cries and bombs can be heard. It is only a matter of moments before it will arrive on their doorsteps and change their lives forever. Therefore Todd makes the split decision to untie Mayor Prentiss (sorry, but he’ll always be the mayor to me). Whether that was a smart decision or the worst idea on the face of the planet, only time will tell. They are now off to protect their town. With the mayor and Todd fighting side by side against the new threat, Viola racing off to be the first one to get to the pilot ship and Lee trying to reach The Resistance, everyone’s fate is in the air. No one is safe in war, especially when you are smack dab in the middle of it.

He’s never going to be the same again, never ever, which makes my throat choke and my chest hurt. This is what war does. Right here, in my hands. This is war. – Viola

Shockingly, I loved Todd throughout this whole book. I agreed with the majority of his decisions except View Spoiler » . Plus he tries his hardest to redeem himself and not let past events happen again. While I don’t believe anything can be done to make up for his past actions, I did admire his current actions and it made me love him that much more. I was so happy because I saw a Todd I thoroughly respected. And he finally became the person I always knew he could be!

If it would save Todd, it wouldn’t have mattered, I was going to do it – I would have killed hundreds, thousands to save him. I would have started an even bigger war for Todd. – Viola

Again, I loved Viola. Her strength, morals and decisions are all admirable. Her actions, which are sometimes with fault, are understandable and so real. When you are doing things in the name of love during war, are they really right or wrong? Black and white lines can become a blur and your moral compass can definitely change, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. And the third voice thrown in the mix? I LOVED it! The understanding and insight was remarkable, and I’m so glad it was there.

Feeling the thrill of it – Cuz that’s it– That’s the nasty, nasty secret of war- When yer winning- When yer winning, it’s ruddy thrilling – Todd

This was a great series. The action was intense, the characters were interesting, I loved how the story flowed and the fact that I could never guess what was going to happen next was wonderful. But I was deeply disturbed by some events that happened and I struggled to stay afloat in the doom and gloom of war. And even after reading Snowscape I was still left wanting more of a solid ending. I had so many unanswered questions and that will always bug me. So if you aren’t as sensitive as me and don’t need an iron clad ending like I do then you’ll love this series! Just be prepared for a whole lot of crazi-ness. 😉

Review:

Read with Chelsea 🙂 Thank you for dealing with my billions of “what the what?!” hysterical texts. ♥ (shut up)

It was an astounding page turner, but my thoughts are all over the map after reading this book. I loved it, I hated it, I was overjoyed, and then I was cast downwards into a deep depression. The storyline was so intense and sometimes it went so dark that I found myself struggling to stay afloat. And just when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, something astronomical happens. It’s as if I’m freefalling into oblivion and there’s no stopping my panicking and pain and then the next thing I know I’m being whipped upwards towards safety and it’s like I am sailing ecstatically through the clouds. Never before have my emotions towards a book or its characters been so chaotic. Even though I did emotionally struggle with parts of this book I HAVE to continue this series. When any book can toy with your emotions and feelings towards a storyline and characters so much, there is something HUGE there. And you have to continue on, even if you know your heart may get broken again and again.

I know this is the end, the end of all things, I can never escape from here and he’ll kill me and kill her and there’s no chance, no life, no hope, nothing.

After that insane cliff hanger in TKONLG, we are still struggling to figure out what’s going to happen to Todd and Voila. How can a moment that was supposed to be so happy and monumental turn into a life sentence of doom and possible death? My mind was reeling from that. Todd and Viola are forcefully separated and neither knows if the other is really alive. The others well-being and life is being dangled in each of their faces. They are each told that as long as they comply with what they are told to do, then the other will stay alive. They are trapped, and they are left with no choice. Because each will do anything, and I do mean anything, to make sure the other one will stay alive. And so the path of deceit, tarnishing your soul, strength and bravery begins.

I’m still the same ol’ stupid effing Todd Hewitt, powerless to do anything, powerless to save myself much less her.

I struggled with Todd in TKONLG and I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t struggle with him in this book. He is SUCH a redeemable person but it pained me to watch his soul turn so black in this book. His actions and lack of actions broke my heart again and again. His choices or lack of choices, depending upon how you see it, was devastating. He is on such a hard journey and I kept hoping against hope that he would be given the chance to redeem himself. Because when Viola is in the picture, he is an amazing man. An absolutely amazing man that takes your breath away. His love towards her is so intense and so innocent that you can’t help but instantly fall in love with him. And I honestly didn’t know if I would ever see that Todd again.

We all fall but that’s not what matters. What matters is picking yourself up again.

I love Viola. She is strong, resilient, smart and her love for Todd is remarkable. I agreed with her choices and values and she is definitely a force to be reckoned with! I loved getting to read part of the book from her point of view. It was fascinating being in her head and following her on her journey and meeting all the new characters she was introduced to. All in all? I really liked this book! The action was intense, the characters were truly unique, my love towards some characters turned sour and others whom I never once saw as redeemable I truly started to like and care for. But some parts seriously disturbed me and even reminded me of past historical events that are truly horrifying. I didn’t realize how dark this book could go. But even with all of my problems with the book, I’m still continuing onward. And I’ll still be recommending this to my friends that I know can handle the storyline and the issues that bothered me. Now onto the final leg of the journey, and here’s hoping my Kindle doesn’t get thrown across the room again like in TKONLG. 🙂

Synopsis:

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -- something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd's gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is. Includes “The New World,” a short story by Patrick Ness.

Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to finishing the series because I HAVE to know what happens. It’s written unlike anything I have ever read, and I loved it! The writing has this ability to suck you in and make you become completely lost in Todd’s world. An hour will pass and you’ll have no clue that you have been reading that long because it feels as though you’ve only had your book open for five minutes. And I loved the main character Todd and his faithful dog Manchee. The journey they embark on is enthralling and I was constantly needing to know what was going to happen next! I was convinced from the beginning that this was going to be a 5 star book for me. But then there’s a scene that takes place that destroyed a piece of the happiness and joy I discovered while reading Todd and Manchee’s journey. I sobbed hysterically. This part broke my heart into a million pieces and then those millions of pieces somehow shattered even more. I became tainted with how I viewed a character and although I’m going to finish the series I still can’t help but think about IT. It IS a magnificent story, it does have amazing characters and the writing is completely addicting so THAT is why I’m continuing on, even though my heart is still in pieces.

Life ain’t fair.
It ain’t.
Not never.
It’s pointless and stupid and there’s only suffering and pain and people who want to hurt you. You can’t love nothing or no one cuz it’ll all be taken away or ruined and you’ll be left alone and constantly having to fight, constantly having to run just to stay alive.

We start out the book in Prentisstown, where everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts. No one has any privacy and even the animals’ talk. Todd is just a young boy and while he is the swamp one day, with his dog Manchee, something happens. He doesn’t understand what is happening or why he has to leave but he is being forced to flee the only town he has ever known. The only folks that have ever loved him. And all he can take with him is a backpack, some supplies and his best pal Manchee. There’s one problem though. The people chasing after him can hear his thoughts. So how in the world do you escape or hide when they always know what you are thinking?

I squeeze my eyes shut tight. And there’s only blackness. Only blackness and nothing. One more time, I’ve ruined everything. One more time, I’ve done everything wrong.

The premise of the book and the way the story flows is fascinating. The way the story speaks to us is truly unique. Listening to Todd narrate the story with his “direkshuns” (directions), “civilizayshun” (civilization) and “concentrayshun” (concentration) makes you feel more one with their world. It’s so real that it feels as though you could blink your eyes and the next thing you know you would be standing next to him. Todd is a determined boy and he has such a sensitive heart that you can’t help but love him. His struggles and the situations that he finds himself in again and again makes your heart ache for him. You’re constantly wishing that he catches some break. A tiny break. Any break. Because his journey is unthinkably hard. The choices he has to make would break a man apart, and he is just a boy. And then we have Manchee. Gah, I love, love, love that dog! Sometimes I think I loved him more than Todd. He is such an amazing friend. His words can be so hilarious, he loves Todd with his whole heart, he is the best companion anyone could ever ask for and he is fearless. Manchee IS the definition of man’s best friend. Being able to hear his voice completely humanizes him and therefore you’re stuck with not only worrying about what’s going to happen to Todd but Manchee too.

I think how hope may be the thing that pulls you forward, may be the thing that keeps you going, but that it’s dangerous, too, that it’s painful and risky, that it’s making a dare to the world and when has the world ever let us win a dare?

All in all, I struggle with two issuesView Spoiler » and since the book contained one of those, I can never truly love the book completely. I definitely loved parts of it, many, many parts but I can never love it as a whole. Unfortunately, that scene took something that was entirely wonderful in my mind, and cast a shadow over the book and a character. I WILL be continuing the series and I am hoping my attitude towards a character will change but it is what it is and that event can never be taken back. The writing, characters, storyline are all fascinating and make an addicting read. I’ll definitely be recommending this to people who don’t struggle with the same issues that I do. But at the end of the day, I’m still stuck reeling over a decision that was made that I can’t completely agree with. I’m hoping that the next book has everything I loved about this book but just without that one heart wrenching part.

Maybe if I was a killer, they wouldn’t be dead. And that’s a trade I’d make any day. I’ll be a killer, if that’s what it takes. Watch me.

Why I’m upset – huge, huge spoilers – View Spoiler »
