Synopsis:

My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods…or monsters. I still can’t decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me.

Then there’s Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn’t felt anything for a hundred years. But there’s something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what’s broken in me.

Which could spell death for us all.

Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I’m wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait.

Ugh. I did it. I did it again where I fell for something that was too good to be true and left me in shattered pieces. Look. This was not meant to be anything other than a blood-sucking good time. I wanted trash. I wanted fun. I wanted ‘slightly better than Twilight’ vibes. And while Twilight will always hold a special place in my heart and will be held in a higher regard always (but my GOD her writing sucks (literally)), this book did have better writing, in my opinion, if not a bit more on the nose and very ‘I’m going to lay every scenario out sentence by sentence’ esque.

When exactly did I become the heroine in some YA romance? The new girl swooning over the hottest, most unattainable boy in school?
Gross. And so not happening.

She, more than once, used very modern terms and had a very modern ‘speaking in text’ manner but, in the end, I enjoyed it for that. It was quick. It was easy. And I didn’t take it too seriously.

“Have you ever wanted something so much that you were afraid to take it?”
“Yes.” He nods.
“Like it’s right there, waiting for you to just reach out and grab it, but you’re so terrified of what will happen when you lose it that you never make the reach?”
“Yes,” he says again, his voice low and deep and comforting in a way that burrows inside me.
I tilt my head up until our eyes meet, and then I whisper, “What did you do?”
For long seconds, he doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t do anything. He just stares back at me with a look in his eyes as scarred and broken as the rest of him. And says, “I decided to take it anyway.”

And then I did. Stupid. Stupid. STUPID. Me. It was still ‘all in fun’, then when I checked book two to see if I wanted to continue right away or wait a moment and finish other things I wanted to read, I saw the ultimate author betrayal. For those wondering, I’ll make it real simple and real clear:

THE AUTHOR PULLS A MIX OF SARAH J. MAAS AND TAREHEH MAFI

If that’s not clear…I cannot help you. Either way, I was bamboozled and I can’t say I feel like doing a singular review because what’s the point?

I don’t recommend.

I won’t be able to read on because I just…can’t….after I fall for something.

It’s pretty obvious Jaxon is the villain of his own story. I just wish I knew why.

It stopped being fun and looked fondly upon when I found out my guy will go through heartbreak-a fun trash read to read on the side or no, my heart still gets invested with love interests, period. Some things never change, and I’m nothing if not transparent.

The fun peril was there, the longing of young love was there, and-a completely added bonus I literally NEVER get and wanted to savor-the blood sucking was there. Sorry not sorry, I’m a trashy bitch (ie Cody Rigsby)-I like that, alright?? Why else would I like vampires, puh-lease.

Jaxon, on the other hand… If he lies to me, you’d better believe I’m going to stake him through his fangy black heart. And yes, I know that makes no sense. I just don’t happen to care at this exact moment.

So, yes, I rated it fairly and used what I think I was going to rate it before my heart was broken in reviews for the next books, because I really had a very fun time and this kept me from going into a slump [even though I want to throw it into a dumpster of fire, dumpster fire book as it is].

Jaxon is awesome, typical, broody, protective, sweet, fierce, and vulnerable-your average YA paranormal hero, but he’s perfect and exactly what you crave (har) when you knowingly pick up a novel such as this. You get what you come for, Twilight rip off or not. Shame-I’d have loved to see what overly dramatic scenes come my way in its predecessors.

Cheesy. Predictable. Delectable.

End of story. For me, anyway.

FRIEND SCALE:

Arielle-Since you’re a simp for SJM I assume you’d be fine *eyeroll*
Cassie– Nah.
Jen– I think you damn well know the answer to this lol
Anna– Nope haha, but you knew that already

Synopsis:

The much-acclaimed BookTok sensation, Olivie Blake's The Atlas Six--now newly revised and edited with additional content.

• The tag #theatlassix has millions of views on TikTok

• A dark academic debut fantasy with an established cult following that reads like THE SECRET HISTORY meets THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

• The first in an explosive trilogy

The Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity, are the foremost secret society of magical academicians in the world. Those who earn a place among the Alexandrians will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams, and each decade, only the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to be considered for initiation.

Enter the latest round of six: Libby Rhodes and Nico de Varona, unwilling halves of an unfathomable whole, who exert uncanny control over every element of physicality. Reina Mori, a naturalist, who can intuit the language of life itself. Parisa Kamali, a telepath who can traverse the depths of the subconscious, navigating worlds inside the human mind. Callum Nova, an empath easily mistaken for a manipulative illusionist, who can influence the intimate workings of a person’s inner self. Finally, there is Tristan Caine, who can see through illusions to a new structure of reality—an ability so rare that neither he nor his peers can fully grasp its implications.

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they will have one year to qualify for initiation, during which time they will be permitted preliminary access to the Society’s archives and judged based on their contributions to various subjects of impossibility: time and space, luck and thought, life and death. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. The six potential initiates will fight to survive the next year of their lives, and if they can prove themselves to be the best among their rivals, most of them will.

Most of them.

People were such delicate little playthings.

This is the most difficult book to talk about. On the one hand, I literally don’t understand a thing that happened. On the other hand….it was a masterpiece but I still don’t understand a lot that happened.

Look, I want to wax poetic about how much I loved this-but I just didn’t. Did I immensely enjoy it? Yeah, absolutely. Was it epic in some parts? Yup. But did it blow my skirt up? Not hardly. That is to say, there was no real ship. I don’t know if anyone I like will live. No real action happened, but the end was freaking amazing and I was right in my feels. You tell me.

Every now and then, Libby achieved a look that successfully withered his balls, and this was one of those instances. It was the kind of look that reminded him she’d set him on fire the first time she’d met him without even batting an eye.
He’d like her more if she did it more often.

And the beginning-I’ll admit I was HYPE at the beginning, which is generally the opposite of what I say, but I think that this author is either a true master in mind-fuckery which, fine, okay, cool, but fuck with someone else because I like my ships pure and if you did that just to bait me, no- I won’t ever truly like you as an author. It’s fair to say-that upon finishing-I did not care if my ship did not sail, though, because the author did at least achieve enough of a bond to satisfy me in a deep friendship that I can get behind AND some strong treachery that leads to supreme moral grayness. (not the same people and not in that order, even-just facts).

“….You think you’ve met me before, other versions of women like me, but you have no idea what I am. You think my looks are what make me? My ambitions? You can’t begin to know the sum of my parts, and you can stare all you like, but you won’t see a damn thing until I show you.”

And, also, I’ve seen this compared a LOT to Deadly Education (okay, fair), but wrong. The beginning was so on the nose I thought I may combust, but one of these is not like the other and I must say, as far as comparisons go, for those who love DE and LG on the level that I do, this is a gross injustice to Atlas Six because there is literally no competition. To be fair, though, on the other side of the realm, A6 stans would say this far surpasses the latter. Again, I am, of course, correct like always, but you can lean to whatever side you like. They aren’t the same…but if they were, in theory, in competition-Atlas Six would be the sad Augustus Gloop that floated down the chocolate river for trying to achieve the impossible. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.

“Don’t envy me, Reina,” Parisa advised softly, turning to say it in Reina’s ear. “Fear me.”

Now that that nasty business is put aside, I will end with the derision of people labeling this pretentious. I guess I see that perspective… but in that vain, what is pretentious when writing a book, anyway? Like what is pique pretentiousness? I’d say (again with this fucking comparison), if we’re going down the what-if road, Novik always writes with an unparalleled pretentiousness. But no. I don’t see it that way. There’s an innocence in her heroine (and same with Uprooted, if memory serves) that, while she’s an asshole (just back to El here lol), she wants, ultimately, to be liked. Compare that to Libby and you have a match. I know it’s deeper than that, but I think there was enough levity of characterization among the 6 that I never felt like I was being made to feel beneath the writing or belittled.

Again, just my opinion (and seriously, I understand what pretentious means and I literally see everyone’s point, and I don’t even think Novik writes with any loftiness, just a beautiful-if not wordy-flow, thus making my point about wordiness somewhat akin to pretentiousness, if you liked that take), but I really thought that, yes the writing wasn’t always the easiest to connect to, but there was heart behind it if you wanted to feel or see it

He had such a talent for finding women who put themselves first. It was like he was some sort of sniffer dog for emotional fatality, always able to dig it up from the one person in the room who would have no trouble making him feel small.

Regardless, what Tristan needed most emergently was to believe in something; to stop staring at the pieces and finally grasp the whole. He wanted to revel in his magic, not wrestle with it. He wanted something, somewhere, that he could understand.

-and anyone who can enrich their story with heart is okay in my book. I’m one to reach out and grab any opportunity to find relatability, and maybe that’s just something within me-a defensive mechanism-that helps me to relate and enjoy 90% of the books I read. I didn’t spend 1-20 dollars on a book to sit and judge it the whole time (well lol), I just wana immerse and enjoy. And if there is a pretentiousness to every book read (I do truly think there is, in some form, for most every author) then so be it. No, not every book is equal, not every book is pretentious. But I see it a lot more than what is called out, and I found this book to be on par with what I read and, honestly, if I hadn’t seen it in reviews (yes, further implicating I’m of a romantic notion of naivety here) that word wouldn’t have even popped in my head.

CHARACTERS AND MY SCALE OF MADNESS

Nico-If harm befalls him I would rage honestly
Libby– Again, the rage is strong-bonus points if my children end up together with that ace banter
Parisa– I wouldn’t be happy if something happened to her-I grew to care for her
Tristan– I don’t see…a happy future…but I hope for it. He’s very sweet. I see great power but not sure what his path is. Perhaps to save them all, in the end (if needed) somehow
Callum– I mean, be gone. I did not care for him one bit, but he did add some flavor that’s for sure.
Reina– Who?

(Sorry, only the real ones will get that joke lol *Arielle, back me up here…*)

So, all in all I did enjoy this book on a level I’m unaccustomed to. It was a challenge for myself in that I like my neat little formulas and I, as a rule, tend to need to know certain things (ARGH) or have hope they will turn out as I like…but we can’t always get what we want, now can we, and I am okay with that (though it took me a while to reach that point). And if my little non-rant pertaining to pretentiousness caused you to raise your eyebrows to your hairline, I only said it in defense of the book because I’d hate for someone to skip over their next favorite read because of one review that may have scared them. Call me soft-hearted, but I’m always going to defend a book to its bitter end…and I guess that’ll never change. This was a good book-it didn’t become an instant favorite like many do (yes, I have a plethora of all time favorites-I’m cool like that), but I will be waiting eagerly for the end alongside many rabid fans.

“Isn’t it? The day you are not a fire,” he said, “is the day the earth will fall still for me.”

FRAN SCALE:

Cassie-Honestly, I think you’ll be disappointed. But you’ll wana like it so you probably will lol. Though, this holds zero candles to El and Orion-Just sayin’.
Arielle-I mean, sure. Probably. You’re weird. I’m weird. This book is weird AF. Fuck knows.
Jen-LMFAO no.
Anna-You read it already so. lol

********

Altogether not at all what I would have expected…but also completely what I expected based on the mercurial reviews littering the booksphere.

All in all a delightful and different read.

Synopsis:

Growing up the daughter of notorious treasure hunter and absentee father Duke Wilder left Lily without much patience for the profession…or much money in the bank. But Lily is nothing if not resourceful, and now uses Duke’s coveted hand-drawn maps to guide tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah. It pays the bills but doesn’t leave enough to fulfill her dream of buying back the beloved ranch her father sold years ago, and definitely not enough to deal with the sight of the man she once loved walking back into her life with a motley crew of friends ready to hit the trails. Frankly, Lily would like to take him out into the wilderness—and leave him there.

Leo Grady knew mirages were a thing in the desert, but they’d barely left civilization when the silhouette of his greatest regret comes into focus in the flickering light of the campfire. Ready to leave the past behind him, Leo wants nothing more than to reconnect with his first and only love. Unfortunately, Lily Wilder is all business, drawing a clear line in the sand: it’s never going to happen.

But when the trip goes horribly and hilariously wrong, the group wonders if maybe the legend of the hidden treasure wasn’t a gimmick after all. There’s a chance to right the wrongs—of Duke’s past and their own—but only if Leo and Lily can confront their history and work together. Alone under the stars in the isolated and dangerous mazes of the Canyonlands, Leo and Lily must decide whether they’ll risk their lives and hearts on the adventure of a lifetime.

Review:

Something Wilder was an action packed adventure! The authors note from the very beginning made me laugh out loud and I could easily see myself watching this story unfold in the movie theater someday!  While it was lighter on the romance then some of their other books, if you’re looking to get lost for a few hours and have a ton of fun then this may be the book for you!

She wanted to hate him. She wanted to resent this man forever. But how could she? Whether he was aware of it or not, he was looking at her like she was the prize at the end.

I loved the premise behind this story!  A guy’s getaway where each year one of them plans their adventure, yet the others truly don’t know the details of what they’re going to be doing.  How fun!  And as fate would have it, Leo Grady ended up on a horseback riding, camping, fake treasure hunting adventure ran by his ex from ten years ago, Lily Wilder.  Lily’s father was a notorious treasure hunter and she had been using his maps to take tourists on adventures.  And while it payed her bills, she desperately wanted to be able to buy back the ranch she grew up on.  While guiding Leo’s group on their adventure, their whole trip went sideways and left them realizing that there may just be a true treasure out there after all!

There was an ember of hope flickering faintly beneath her ribs; he stoked it with the unexpected hunger in his expression. What did he want her to say right now? It all felt like too much to process at once.

I have to get out of the way my biggest issue with this book…..Terry.  He was a tag along in Leo’s group and he felt like a cartoon character at times.  He was ridiculous, rude, beyond crazy, and just so over the top that every time he spoke or did an action it pulled me out of the story and left a bad taste in my mouth.  I struggled hard to stay focused.  I even contemplated not finishing this book because of his character and some truly odd placed humor which made me uncomfortable.  But I’m so glad I pushed through because the latter part of this book was amazing!

He nodded, smiling at the fire. “That was one crazy fucking day.”
This made her laugh, and he looked up at her, pleased at the sound. Her heart tugged.

Leo and Lily had a short yet bright and passionate relationship ten years ago.  It didn’t seem like either of them were able to get over their past, or how things fell apart between them.  So when they saw each other again, feelings were still there yet there was a huge world of hurt.  I’m so glad this story didn’t drag out their talks about what happened in the past.  I was thankful that wasn’t an issue!  And while Leo and Lily didn’t have banter like I’d come to love with CL’s other couples, in that latter half of the story I loved feeling the passion between them!  I just wish it didn’t take that long for it to get there.  But by then I was rooting for their second chance happily ever after and for them to just stay alive!

Hope was a dangerous drug, and Lily was standing at the precipice between two worlds: one that promised everything she ever wanted in life, and another where she’d have to figure out how to make the life she had into the life she wanted.

Something Wilder focused more on the adventure then the romance for the first part of the story.  So I was ecstatic that the latter half added in the romance and even some passion in the pages.  By 62% I was more than hooked and if I could I’d give that last part all the stars!  While I guessed quite a few things, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment with how the story unfolded.  And that last part was so action packed and nonstop, that it was impossible not to smile, gasp or put down this book! With being in the wilderness, treasure hunting while solving puzzles and life and death situations, this story was a lot of fun!

Never in all her life had she imagined her own death, but if pressed, she’d say what anyone who was at least part optimist probably said: she expected to die when she was old, after a long, happy life. She absolutely did not expect to die in the Green River, chasing her father’s lunatic dream.

Something Wilder wrapped up beautifully and I loved getting to know what everyone was up to and that some of the characters definitely got their happily ever after!  I think so many people will adore this story and I’d love to watch it as a movie, with a few tweaks with a certain character.  If you adore action, adventure and romance, then definitely check out this book!

Synopsis:

USA Today bestselling author Amalie Howard whisks you away with a historical romance full of drama, true love, and the perfect happily ever after. Readers will devour this tale of:

A rebellious heiress determined to be independent
A shunned duke forced to return to his family estate
And a scandal between them that will have the whole town aflutter

Sometimes, finding love means flouting the rules...

Born to a life of privilege, Lady Ravenna Huntley rues the day that she must marry. She's refused dozens of suitors and cried off multiple betrothals, but running away―even if brash and foolhardy―is the only option left to secure her independence.

Lord Courtland Chase, grandson of the Duke of Ashvale, was driven from England at the behest of his cruel stepmother. Scorned and shunned, he swore never to return to the land of his birth. But when a twist of bad luck throws a rebellious heiress into his arms, at the very moment he finds out he's the new Duke, marriage is the only alternative to massive scandal.

Both are quick to deny it, but a wedding might be the only way out for both of them. And the attraction that burns between them makes Ravenna and Courtland wonder if it'll truly only be a marriage of convenience after all...

Review:

Rules for Heiresses was absolutely captivating!  With friendship, romance and charm, I adored this book!  These characters pulled me in so easily and it felt like I was watching a movie unfold!  If you love adult historical romance, fierce heroines and tortured male characters then you definitely need to check this one out!

“Ravenna.”
“Yes?” she said, breathless.
“I will always value your opinion.”
On that shockingly solemn pronouncement, he hauled her gracefully upright amid deafening cheers, and Ravenna let out a shuddering breath.

Lady Ravenna Huntley and Lord Courtland Chase had been arranged to marry since infancy.  When he left eleven years ago, she thought he had died.  So meeting years later, under the most unusual circumstances, it was impossible not to smile.  Their meet cute was shocking and so much fun!  Even after so much time had passed, they not only still had a connection but there was also an intense attraction and chemistry too!  When Ravenna and Courtland were caught in a compromising position and forced to wed, I was clapping my hands excited for what would happen next!

“People are staring,” she murmured.
He lifted her gloved hand to his lips. “Let them.”

I loved Lady Ravenna Huntley!  She was independent, fierce, level headed and knew what she wanted in life.  And I adored the relationship she had with her sister-in-law.  When Lord Courtland Chase waltzed back into her life, I was obsessed!  He could be so grumpy, closed off and pushed others away.  But with Lady Ravenna, he constantly found himself drawn to her.  Even though he tried his best to push her away too.  Courtland antagonized her which made me laugh, but there was that intense tension between them that neither of them could deny.  So when they traveled back home, we started seeing an even bigger picture.  This book had a richness and depth to it that surprised me!

“Save us both the trouble and tell me what it is you want from me, Your Grace.”
Your body. Your consent. Your surrender.
But none of those things were his to demand. Courtland blew out a breath.

At the core of this story was Courtland and Ravenna.  And as they stepped back into their lives, I loved watching not only him defending her, but that she also stood up for him too.  Together they felt like a team, but Courtland was so damaged from his past.  And I kept hoping he would open up and trust Ravenna.  Because when they got along it felt like the sun was brilliantly shining, it was smile inducing!  And their moments together later on were hot and very steamy!  They are a couple you will definitely be cheering for every step of the way!

“What do you do to me?” he bit out, breaking from her.
“The same you do to me.” Her fingers threaded through his wet hair, those singular eyes on his, molten and wanting. She tugged, a devious smile on her lips.  “Kiss me again, Duke.”

Rules for Heiresses was my first read by Amalie Howard and I will definitely be bingeing her back-list!  The story not only kept me intrigued but the characters felt so real! If you enjoy historical romance, steamy moments and meaningful story-lines then you’ll want Rules for Heiresses on your tbr!

“You are neither misfortune nor ruin, Courtland Chase. You’re the star… the light that brightens everything it touches. It’s time you saw that.”

PS  Bronwyn needs her own book!

Synopsis:

A gym nemesis pushes a fitness influencer to the max in Amy Lea’s steamy debut romantic comedy.

Curvy fitness influencer Crystal Chen built her career shattering gym stereotypes and mostly ignoring the trolls. After her recent breakup, she has little stamina left for men, instead finding solace in the gym – her place of power and positivity.

Enter firefighter Scott Ritchie, the smug new gym patron who routinely steals her favorite squat rack. Sparks fly as these ultra-competitive foes battle for gym domination. But after a series of escalating jabs, the last thing they expect is to run into each other at their grandparents' engagement party.

In the lead up to their grandparents' wedding, Crystal discovers there’s a soft heart under Scott’s muscled exterior. Bonding over family, fitness, and cheesy pick-up lines, they just might have found her swolemate. But when a photo of them goes viral, savage internet trolls put their budding relationship to the ultimate test of strength.

Review:

Set on You was a heartwarming debut!  With a fun take on the enemies to lovers trope, I devoured this book in two sittings.  And this slow burn romance had humor, romance and heart in the pages, making it a fabulous combination!  If you love adult romance and enemies to lovers, you may want to have this one on your tbr!

“What’s your name?” The words tumble out of my mouth before I even  register what I’m saying. Why do I care to know his legal name? Squat Rack Thief suits him just fine.
I hold my breath, awaiting his answer.
Amused, he opens his mouth, but no words come out. Instead, he just strides away.

Crystal Chen was a curvy fitness influencer whose content was uplifting while also trying to smash gym stereotypes, which I loved.  After dealing with a bad breakup, Crystal kept running into a man at the gym who not only ruined the videos she was recording, but seemed to antagonize her at the same time.  It was hate and lust at first sight.  But after multiple run-ins at the gym, Crystal and Scott ended up meeting at their grandparents engagement party.  Saying they were both shocked was an understatement!  And that moment led their relationship down a different path, where I couldn’t wait to see what happened next!

The universe is officially conspiring against me. I must have done some seriously messed-up shit in a past life.

My first impression of Scott Ritchie was that he was a a complete and total douchebag, ha!  But when Scott got Crystal back in that first chapter, I was laughing so hard I couldn’t help but be intrigued by him!  Especially when we saw that he could be nice……just not to her lol.  I should have hated Scott, for Crystal’s sake, but that wasn’t happening.  He made me crack up way too much.  And the more we got to see who firefighter Scott was, it was impossible not to fall head over heels in love with him!

It might be evil, but I want to break him. I want to watch him lose all restraint.

Crystal was strong willed and tried her hardest! I absolutely loved how she was so positive about her body and health, but it shocked me that she could be so negative about males and love. So because of that, her little faith or trust in men definitely made me nervous if she would let Scott in all the way. And while she did stumble at times, it was heartwarming to watch her grow by the end of this novel.

I walk ahead a few paces, forcing my mouth into a neutral state. I’m  smiling like a child at Disneyland and I refuse to let him see it. I’m  enjoying non-hate-filled banter with him far more than he needs to know.

Crystal and Scott together were addictive. I loved the games they played with each other, they were laugh out loud worthy and it made their enemies to lovers romance so much fun! And when they did get physical, oh wow, it was smoking hot. But as the story progressed, mistakes were made. So I was happy to see that apologies happened and allowed me to forgive and move on. I also loved how we got to read Crystal’s Instagram posts and see a few of the comments on each of her posts. And I absolutely loved both of their grandparents with my whole heart. They were so adorable!

There’s a fragility in the way he’s looking at me, truly at me. As if  he’s inviting me in, allowing me to see into the depths of his soul.  Every guy I’ve ever been with would already have my pants off right now,  but he’s treating me like I’m something to be cherished, savored.

Set on You was a wonderful debut! With enemies to lovers, steamy scenes, fun banter and wonderful side characters, this story was fabulous! While I did have some hiccups with Crystal, I was so happy that by the end of the book we got to see how far she had come and grew! Plus we were given an epilogue that gave us a happily ever after! I closed this book excited to read whatever Amy Lea releases next!
