HOLY STALKER I think I’m in love! Imagine if your fate was irrevocably altered, all the events leading up to that moment blown to pieces, because the love of your life decides to ‘finally’ sit on the bench next to you?

What if you couldn’t stand by any longer and watch an unfathomable fate unravel before your eyes? These scenarios are the embodiment of this novel, and while it takes a minute to decide if the course of action taken is best suited for all parties involved, I ultimately found that I loved Jared, and no one else could make the cut.

Nina’s father has just died, and she feels the world crashing down on her. Suddenly, a mysterious, handsome stranger occupies the seat beside her, and she can’t help but feel comfortable around him- throw in some “chance” encounters and we have an attraction brewing. I hate, no loathe, insta-love, or at least the corny kind with bad dialogue-but this attraction is more than that, it’s so much deeper than that, and I can’t help but to be drawn to the love projected in this story. Jared is the sweetest being and I found myself on an automatic *awww* setting. It’s ridiculous, really, the devotion and determination Jared puts forth.

But, alas, we can’t have a romance without an annoying, plot-altering scenario that makes you angrier by the second-or at least that’s MY default setting-frustration. Nina, while a very likeable and in some cases loveable character, made me want to pull my hair out. She commits the ultimate taboo of romance novels in my eyes, and that skewed my perception of the story a bit. I don’t like when people are strung along, nor do I like when one of the main characters is in a tortured state of mind-for NO REASON. So yes, I was bothered for a chunk of the story, and couldn’t justify giving it 5 stars for that reason.

Jamie McGuire is a very talented author, and I have really liked everything she has written thus far. In one case, I bordered on obsession and couldn’t think straight for a couple days, incoherently babbling to those who could care less about a certain someone in a certain story with a name that starts with the letter T(I promised myself I WOULD NOT mention that certain story-it’s not fair to compare, lol). I can’t wait to see what else Jamie can bring to the table, and I will forever be a loyal fan to her, and her addictive writing style.

I have been asking people constantly for good recommendations for what to read next, and while they have all been good, this is the book I have been waiting for. The books don’t have to be over the top sappy romance (although I love those stories too ;)..), just well-written with the right amount of sass and a compelling story line. I was completely consumed and enthralled in this story and could not put it down. There was a certain amount of relativity that was easy to identify with, thank God, which I have been having a terrible time of lately.

Stunning, breathtaking, beautiful, heartbreaking and the perfect amount of angst and/or heartache are just a few of the words that come to mind when assessing Flat Out Love. Celeste, Matt, Finn, Flat Finn…just the best characters ever-especially Flat Finn lol. Celeste was the most intriguing character to read about, and I truly enjoyed the journey of Julie trying to help her leap out of her comfort zone. My breaking point? When Celeste tells Matty she loves him-can you cue the huge smile and awwwwwwwwwww? I teared up like crazy-nothing like a brother realizing how much his sister loves and idolizes him. I cherish those tender moments, because those are what real life is all about, and I couldn’t help but to relate that to my younger sister and I-the love we share (while when we were younger I swear we fought so much it almost led to hair being pulled out-a complete show of my inner strength as an older, more mature sis-yeah, right *rolls eyes*). You can’t help but to root for all the characters and wish them the very best, and this is a hard thing for the author to accomplish since in many books you just want to smack some sense into at least one of the main people.

An absolutely amazing read and I loved every second of it, even if I did see the ending coming within like….30 seconds lol. But that just goes to show you have much I LOVED this book! I hate complete and utter predictability, yet I couldn’t help but love every minute of the predictability. The perfect mixture of sweet, funny, witty, and entertaining I have ceaselessly been searching for; yet another staple to add to my favorites collection. I don’t know if the online plot could ever work for me again, but this author nailed it, and I am going to enjoy it in the here and now and continue to search for more books that have the stamina to match this one and many other of my long time favorites. I will most definitely be revisiting this read very soon in the near future.

Synopsis:

Ella is back at school, trying to focus on her future and forget the darkness of her past. Still, her ongoing family drama is making it harder and harder to get through the days. All she really wants is Micha, but no way will she let her problems get in the way of his dreams.

Micha is busy touring the country with his band, seemingly getting everything he's ever wanted. But deep down he knows something is missing. Being away from Ella is harder than he expected. And while he longs to have her with him, he won't ask her to leave college just to be at his side.

When Ella and Micha are together, anything seems possible . . . but lately those shared moments aren't so easy to find. When a new tragedy shakes their already fragile world, one of them will make a dramatic choice that could break them apart forever . . .

Review:

***Unfortunately, I will not be finishing this series. The further I get in this series, the further I dislike the characters. The characters are continuing to make the same mistakes again and again, and therefore are going through the same struggles all over again. It’s very disappointing because I truly enjoy the way she writes. ***

People never mean to do things that are hurtful, yet sometimes it just happens, through an intense moment, through brief rationalization, or by simply speaking words that only belong inside one’s head. Or simply by giving up for a second. People hurt each other all the time.

I am so confused, I feel like I read two different books. I LOVED the beginning and then somewhere towards 3/4s of the way into the book everything changed. I didn’t feel the emotions from Ella and Micha anymore. I felt as though I was BEING told the end of their story instead of FEELING the end of their story. The first part of the book I laughed when they laughed, I cried when Ella cried and I was anxious when Ella and Micha were struggling. I felt everything that Ella and Micha felt. Then somewhere along the way their words and actions lost their emotional power. I still enjoyed The Forever of Ella and Micha, I just didn’t love it nearly as much as The Secret of Ella and Micha.

It feels like we’re slipping away from each other, and he was the one thing that brought me back out of my dark place. If he leaves me, I’m not sure I can hold onto the light.

Ella is seeing a psychologist, which is a huge step towards fixing herself. She is trying to move on from her traumatizing past, being ok outside of her comfort zone, and working on slowly forgiving herself. She still struggled emotionally throughout the book and she also continued to push Micha away. Ella made mistakes but at the same point she grew into a better person. Though her growth was one the many reasons I loved Ella, it was the reoccurrence of her spit fire attitude that had me falling in love with her all over again. She can be hilarious when she wants to be! The scene where Micha chooses the song “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails had me laughing so hard. I laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe. Not only because of what took place in that scene but because OH MY GOSH it reminded me of a time in my high school years. When a book reminds you of your past it can be a good thing or a bad thing 🙂 Maybe it wasn’t as funny to everyone else, but I still loved that part of the book.

Micha – With each tear shed, she steals more of my heart, until she owns it completely. I realize that even through the hard times I’m sure we’ll face, I’ll never be able to walk away from her.

And then of course there is Micha. He is still sexy, patient, and thoroughly dedicated to Ella. He is still her knight in shining armor and he is still dealing with his demons. Together they were still (see a theme here?) a beautiful mess. And I was still rooting for their happy ending!

He consumes my thoughts, my body, my dreams – he’s what drives me to be better.

Something happened 3/4s of the way into the book. Nothing dire, nothing that made me hate the characters, nothing that deviated from the flow of the book, but still something happened. Maybe it was me? I don’t know. The passion in their words and the intensity of their actions didn’t exist anymore. There were struggles, hardships and happy moments, just like the beginning of the book, but I felt as though I was just going through the motion of reading and not feeling anything. This was so disheartening. I SO wanted to love the rest of the book, but sadly I didn’t. Instead of being a great book, it was just a good book.

“It isn’t as important to feel great about all the things we do,” I say softly. “But how we feel toward the end when we look back at everything we’ve done.”

I’m hoping to fall back in love with this series so I will continue onward. Hopefully Lila and Ethan will give me the emotional closure I want from a series!

He is my best friend, my soul mate. In a perfect world, full of roses and sunshine we’d be together, but this world is full of broken homes, drunken fathers, and mothers who give up easily.

Sometimes you just need a good book that is full of anguish, sorrow, frustration and the hope of a happily ever after. Ella is still reeling from the horrors of her past. She is desperately trying to shove those memories deep down inside where they will never see the light of day. She honestly believes this can be accomplished by pretending to be someone she is not. Once she returns home her resolve starts to shatter once Micha, her best friend, re-enters her life. I really liked Ella. She has a smart mouth, is fierce, and she grew as a person from the beginning to the end of the book. She learned from some of her mistakes and tried her hardest to emerge as a better person. To me, this is huge. I love that Ella is a fighter and other than a smart-mouth slip up here and there she tries to grow with the help of Micha.

I want to allow myself to breathe again, but I fear the loss of control-I fear I’ll have to feel everything, including my guilt.

The heartache of her world is so vast. Her Dad has become a shell of a man, drinking himself into oblivion. He was always a drunk but she honestly believes it is because of her actions that he is spiraling further down this dark path. Then there is the train wreck that was her mother. Ella carries her mother’s past action on the weight of her shoulders. She can’t ever forgive herself for not being able to rectify that situation. Then you have her brother. They have a non-existent relationship and she believes he blames her for everything that happened one year ago. And then there is Micha. Oh, thank goodness for sweet, loving, loyal Micha.

Micha saw too much of me and it scared me too much to let him in all the way.
As much as I would love to melt into him, it just can’t happen. I can’t open up like that and lose control. I need control.

Micha desperately tries to shatter Ella’s walls. And each attempt made me fall more and more in love with him. He may be struggling with his own demons but he is the knight in shining armor that Ella so desperately needs. His patience, perseverance, dedication to Ella was admirable.

It was an earth shattering kiss, one that stole breaths, stopped hearts, and scared the shit out of me because it surfaced feelings I’d never felt before, ones that rendered me helpless.

This book isn’t a light hearted or fluffy read. Not everyone is going to love it or let alone like it. But I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s different than what I normally read and I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

“Think of it as screenplay fodder,” I say, putting a hand on her back and leading her towards the escalators. “Angry Gothic Girl discovers Fifth Avenue.”

“I’ve been on Fifth Avenue before, fool,” she snaps.
She’s so lovely.

Well….wasn’t that lovely? I quite enjoyed that. I’m as surprised by my five star rating as anyone else, but what can I say? When the book suits you, it suits you. I couldn’t have chosen a better time to delve into this story.

It had the perfect amount of wit, banter, romance, angst, and laugh out loud moments. Sometimes when I used to pick up a NA book, I would regret doing so-but not once in this hilarious novel did I want to put it down. That in itself is refreshing. It’s been a while since I’ve been positive towards a NA rather than indifferent….and I am so so glad that spell was broken with these two hilariously clueless students from different sides of the tracks.

Who knew that pretending you’re not falling for someone would be so much more difficult than pretending that you are?

I’m not going to lie-I’m feeling a little fangirlish about this one-so beware-I’m not normally so mushy but I think there is going to be a TON of gushing and proclamations of love for this book ahead. You’ve been warned.

Ethan Price chose better than he knew when he picked Stephanie Kendrick to play Barbie to his Ken.
Because Stephanie Kendrick was once Steffie Wright.
Cheerleader, student council president and prom queen.
Impressing parents? Please.
I used to do that shit in my sleep.

I’m utterly and completely sad this book is over. Normally I put a book down and I’m like, ‘okay, what’s next?!’ but the moment I put Isn’t She Lovely down, I felt an immediate ache in my heart and I silently wished there was more that could happen without the story turning round and round in a slow, monotonous repeat, but sadly books don’t work that way and this is a perfect example of a book ending just as it-and where it-should. THIS is the reaction I want when I switch genres. THIS is how I want to feel when I read something I don’t normally read. THIS…was great.

I turn my head to watch him as he launches into some ridiculous story, and I’m not thinking about whether this is one of the truths or the lie.
I’m thinking that Ethan Price is putting on a damned good show in an effort to cheer me up. In an effort to make me forget.
But mostly, I try not to think about what I’m feeling.
Because what I’m feeling has nothing to do with our charade.
What I’m feeling seems real.

I, admittedly, was going to lower my rating-I was. There were SO many mentions of her boobs (yes, her massive boobs) in the first 30% of the book that I would have been drunk had I made a bet with myself to take a shot every time her lady lumps were mentioned. As the story progressed, though, it became a little inside joke that she would play up and it was scarcely mentioned except for when it would be expected that the anatomy in question should be mentioned…so that really helped. But in the end?? It didn’t matter. They could have mentioned her pelvic region fifty times and I wouldn’t have batted an eye-I ADORED this story and literally nothing could lower this rating. Okay, if they had all miraculously died in a plane crash I’d have been livid, exceedingly so, but that’s besides the point-Spoiler alert-they didn’t. ISL made me happy and gave my life vivid color in the sunniest shades possible as my world in real life has turned a nasty shade of gray…and, ultimately, I couldn’t ask for more in a book.

Knock it off, Price. She probably has Kill Them All tattooed on her ass or something.

The thing about this story is, they both have a problem that neither one of them has told anyone about or talked to anyone about it. They don’t realize how it has truly effected their attitudes or how it has broken them on the inside. That is one of the main points that fueled the story and I found myself continually hoping to find out what had happened with them to make them so defensive, but maybe it takes meeting a kindred spirit to truly help heal when no one else seems to get what’s truly going on, on the inside-what’s really hurting them. Ethan may have been overly into his image and might have made mistake after vapid mistake, but in the end, he had a heart of gold and just didn’t realize he didn’t know any better. He’d never been asked to be any other way and until that crazy, dark haired girl with black clothes from head to toe waltzed in and he didn’t know how to handle it. I loved seeing his transformation and how it all worked out in the end…I can’t say how, but sometimes the sweetest gesture in the world can end up with you busting out laughing at how ludicrous and (I guess) adorable it is. Then Stepahnie-She was the same with not wanting to change her ways, but they were both stubborn and needed to realize that there’s more to life than trying to make a shocking statement or trying to fade into the background. We don’t know why, but when we do find out why she’s become this way, our hearts break for this girl that has essentially shut everyone out and we root for nothing but the best for her…and then we cringe as she and Ethan duke it out when they both try to make the ultimate statements time after time.

I roll my eyes as I start tossing socks into the bag. “Let me guess. You want to know if I still have my old uniform.”
He sets the picture back on the nightstand and moves towards the door. “Nah. Not my thing. But I think I could develop a thing for girls in combat boots.”
I spin around in surprise, wanting to see his face, wanting to know if he means what I think he means.
But he’s already gone.

This is so different from what I always read. Like SO out there compared to normal. This is just a standard, everyday normal NA book for most people, but to me this isn’t normal. Everyone has their own ‘normals’-mine just tends to be paranormal and dystopian. But maybe that peril I so desperately seek isn’t only in dystopians. Aren’t angst and peril sometimes one in the same? I don’t mean literally, but figuratively speaking-there are different types of angst and different kinds of peril-and maybe I’ve noticed this before in my dystopians and paranormals, but never thought to apply it to YA/NA. Angst sometimes gives you that desired effect that makes you feel as though the world is dropping out from beneath your feet…as if the characters will be lucky to survive another day-Because their hearts are so broken and because they are going through such emotional turmoil. My favorite scenes in those crazy para/dystopians are those at the end when the hero or heroine is desperate to save the other-when they are willing to do anything, even die at the hands of the enemy, to save the other-That moment when they have nothing else they want to live for but that one person in the most dangerous of positions…all at the hands of the bad guy. I love the characters being stripped bare and that we get to see who they truly are and what they are really made of. I might have hit the nail on the head before about angst and peril being one and the same at times, but I’ve missed this detail slightly in my NA/YA novels before, and I fell in love with this relatively uneventful and mild version of the emotional peril I do so crave in my cut throat books. I just needed a reminder of why I used to love this stuff before it got all cliched and boring. Or maybe Lauren Layne just knows how to write a perfectly balanced story. That might be it, too.

“Are you sure it’s okay? I feel a little…”
She doesn’t finish the sentence, so I turn to glance at her, and ah, hell, she looks vulnerable. Those wide blue eyes are silently begging me to reassure her that yes, she can pull this off, and yes, she’ll be okay without her black-eyeliner defense against the world.
“You look beautiful,” I say softly.

See how I went all dramatic there?? I don’t do that for just any book. I don’t just fangirl for no reason-a story has to touch me in a different way and this book did, for whatever superficial reason.

So fun and just the right amount of snark and angst. Cute, lovable, and the most fun I’ve had reading a book in what feels like forever. I. Do. Not. Laugh. Out. Loud. At. Books. End of story. But this story had me laughing out loud and giggling like a little girl, then covering my mouth to stifle the insane urges to cackle like a madwoman.

I’m just more of the beer and football type while I’m at school. At home, it’s more chess and Scotch, but whatever. The point is, I saw at least five dudes in that classroom wearing nail polish. Nail polish.
I wouldn’t be caught dead.

I am SO happy I decided to read this after putting it off for so long- the only mistake I made? Waiting this long to read it. Or maybe I picked it up at the perfect time. Because as I finished last night, I was sitting there with a giddy, goofy smile on my face and I couldn’t have been happier. Preppy Price and Goth Girl for the win. Over and out.
