Synopsis:

Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society's mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

Finally, the time has come.

But devotion to honor and hunger for vengeance run deep on both sides. Darrow and his comrades-in-arms face powerful enemies without scruple or mercy. Among them are some Darrow once considered friends. To win, Darrow will need to inspire those shackled in darkness to break their chains, unmake the world their cruel masters have built, and claim a destiny too long denied - and too glorious to surrender.

So let him do his worst.

I know how to suffer.
I know the darkness.
This is
not how it ends.

You know those books where, even though you know it will be cemented into your favorites list until the end of time (the whole series, for that matter), words just don’t describe how you feel?? Like, no matter what you say, everything will seem like useless drivel that couldn’t possibly compare to what you felt while reading that novel?? Well…this is one of those books-One of those books where you have intense emotions throughout; One of those books where you don’t know what to think or say or do the entire time; One of those books where you put it down at the end and go…Holy fucking shit. Well, that was me. I finished. I put the book down. I crossed my hands. I sat there. And I thought….what did I just read?? And I just now have a word that might just capture the essence of this series without selling it short. I may be off, I may be wrong…but this book?? It was magnificent.

And I wonder, in my last moments, if the planet does not mind that we wound her surface or pillage her bounty, because she knows we silly warm things are not even a breath in her cosmic life. We have grown and spread, and will rage and die. And when all that remains of us is our steel monuments and plastic idols, her winds will whisper, her sands will shift, and she will spin on and on, forgetting about the bold, hairless apes who thought they deserved immortality.

There wasn’t one moment throughout the entirety of this story where I felt like I could comfortably put it down and be able to breathe. How does an author do that? How can they make a story so intense, so compelling, so bloodydamn addicting, that you feel like you can’t breathe without it? I’m telling you, guys, and you can ask any one of my best friends on here-I read this book through thick and thin, night and day, at the cost of sleep, and with a perpetual migraine that I STILL don’t think has disappeared. This book, this series, this author…are absolutely unforgettable.

“You and I keep looking for light in the darkness, expecting it to appear. But it already has.” I touch his shoulder. “We’re it, boyo. Broken and cracked and stupid as we are, we’re the light, and we’re spreading.”

I laughed. I cried. I gasped. I cried again. I lost any sense of a coherent thought. I became a walking, talking, barely breathing zombie (wait, do zombies breathe?? How the hell does that work??). Very few series keep my attention from beginning to end. Very few series are good enough for me to say, ‘I wouldn’t change a thing’. But this is probably one of the first and only series where I said just that-I didn’t like it sometimes, and my heart was torn to shreds time and again…but I wouldn’t. I really wouldn’t. I can’t imagine a single thing being different.

Fear is not real.
If you’re watching, Eo, it’s time to close your eyes.
The reaper has come. And he’s brought hell with him.

Pierce Brown isn’t a stranger to killing off your favorite characters. You know in your heart of hearts that if you get attached to yet another person, it’s just another gamble that your heart might find itself broken. Yet, with each new installment, each new page, each new paragraph, you find another person to love, another person to admire, another person to respect, and another person you can’t imagine this story being without. And you know, as I stated above, that you have no way of knowing what will happen in the end. You have no fucking clue, to be honest. But, as you weigh out your level of awe and love and undying obsession of the series, you realize something that makes you want to punch yourself in the face: You damn well don’t care and you are willing to risk it all, going along for the ride and hoping for the best even though you know not everyone will make it out alive.

What an inevitable waste it seems. Death begets death begets death.

And death?? What is death, really, when you’ve been betraying your friends, posing as the color they despise? What is death, honestly, when it would almost be better than the knives repeatedly rammed into your back? What is death….when you can’t even trust your best and kindest friends? Darrow has made a list of enemies so long that I can’t even begin to name them (Even if it wouldn’t cause an uproar because of spoilers). Everyone wants a piece of the Reaper; everyone wants his head on a stake. But this series is one that I can honestly say, and this doesn’t happen often, I never could predict. I didn’t know who to trust, who would stand by Darrow’s side in the end, and who would redeem themselves-if anyone. I longed for broken friendships and love lost. I longed for happiness among a group of friends that never had a chance. I longed for Darrow to finally find his peace…even if it meant losing his life.

If this is the end, I will rage toward it.

 photo giphy 65_zpsf1twy24w.gif

Darrow’s journey was one forged from the bowels of hell, beginning as a lowly Red helldiver who wished only to love his wife, Eo, and stay on his knees so they could live their lives to the fullest with children and a family surrounding them. But, even then, before the spark of revolution and war, Eo pushed for Darrow to live for more, to break the chains, to make a difference in a world forged by hatred and color superiority. It cost her life, and it broke Darrow beyond repair….or so we (or I) thought.

“A man thinks he can fly, but he is afraid to jump. A poor friend pushes him from behind.” He looks up at me. “A good friend jumps with.”

Darrow’s mind became something absolutely wonderful to behold in this installment. I have always loved Darrow, I made no secret about that, even when people labeled him things I never agreed with. But I really feel that he became someone that every person could love. He was strong-minded, but pig-headed. He used his strength, but didn’t force. He thought with his mind and not only his heart. He developed a sense of empathy he once thought extinguished, wistful in ways he dare not utter to another soul. He loved his Gold friends-almost all of them-and the loss of some of them over the years has killed him inside-he is hurt. He is wounded. And he can finally see-He knows what must be done to lead his Howler’s to victory and a better world…but it pains him to know the lengths he must go to.

Obsidian will seek me, led by masters who promised them Pinks in exchange for my head. They will hunt my friends. They will say Sevro’s name, and Mustang’s, and Ragnar’s View Spoiler » They will hunt the Telemanuses and Victra, Orion, and my Howlers. But they cannot have them.
Today I take.

 photo dth 1_zpsthg6nzf2.gif

He knows, more than anyone, the lives that will be lost, the enemies-once old friends-he will have to eliminate. And before, when he was only the Reaper hell bent on vengeance, he only saw rage and justice and what had been done to him before. He didn’t use his wisdom or experience-he wished only to force his hand and to win by brute strength. He has grown, and he wants to do things as honorably as one possibly can during war. And, most shockingly of all, he finally saw Eo in a whole new light.

Death begets death begets death…

He will never forget the girl who began everything, the girl who’s death was a symbol for life and voice, but he now sees her for what she was: a foolish girl who couldn’t possibly know what was to come. And it shocked me. She no longer was the perfect martyr who could do no wrong in his eyes. She was no longer the only reason for breathing, for fighting and gaining something more. He knows he loved her, but he knows they were young and knew nothing of the world…and it’s something he touches on quite a bit. I don’t know why I loved this aspect so much-you know me, true love conquers all and all that shit, but maybe this is something I grasp more than I ever wanted to. I’ve grown as well-And no it’s not the same, PUH-LEASE. But….I feel that this was a strong bout of character growth. No matter how insignificant to others, it touched me deeply. It was sad, and it was raw, and it was real. I was a child, too, in high school. I loved my boyfriend to a point it was almost sickening….and I would tell you, even a year ago, that I still felt I was in the right in feeling all the bad and good and weird things I felt back then. And now, ten years later (yes, it’s been that long, SHUT UP) and in this moment in life…I think, what an effing idealized fool I was. We are married now, and we have our differences-boy do I ever know it-but life is so different than I ever imagined. And it makes me sick to admit that, because I just knew what I needed to do and how to be and how he would be. But life…it’s not as you plan it. It’s what you do to make it. And, again, this has nothing to do with a futuristic, mars-based, dystopian world…but it touched me deeply, all the same. Whatever. Go figure.

I’m in a dream. Unable to change the forces that move around me. To stop the sand from slipping though my fingers. I set this into motion but didn’t have the heart or strength or cunning or whatever the hell I needed to stop it.

 photo giphy 66_zpswcyv22cx.gif

The character growth in this book was just…it was the best. The good face decisions that make them evil, the evil stay evil, some evil are given chances for redemption…and only some are to be saved….whereas others are beyond saving. There are twists and lies and betrayals and death. There are secrets and battles and friendships tested. And, believe it or not, there’s love. Lots and lots of love. Love in the marches of loyal followers. Love between friends. Love from those saved and those lost. And lovers who should never had a chance.

Because I’m a sucker for a fucking wonderful quote

I dunno..I feel like this is a girly review for a brutish book, but I can’t change what I see and who I am. I see the best in everything, if at all possible, and I love a perilistic, death-tastic book. I am a walking, talking contradiction…..and I guess that’s why I will always love these magnificent, well-written, out of this world books. From the moment I pick these stories up, I am a slave to the writing. Beautiful, gritty, raw words sewn onto pages of dirty, rotten, deceitful fights for survival seep into my pores, causing me to always-IMMEDIATELY-take a picture of the first page (highlighted in a rainbow of color, by the way) and send it to all my non-participating friends, almost as if to say: ‘Na na na na boo-boo, stick your head in doo-doo….look what you’re missing out on-brilliance.’ Pierce Brown is just…he’s beyond words. The grit and hard work that was put into every single page of this series astounds me even now, even after finishing days ago. Authors like these are few and far between, just waiting to be found. I thank GR for pushing this on the side of their site as I searched for other books so that the red wing emblazoning the first cover seared into my brain, making it something I just HAD to read, even if this was completely out of my comfort zone. I’ve been with this book from the first year, from the first page, from the beginning. I walked alone, with no friends who really latched onto this series like I did (by the way, it is NOT for the feint of heart). I don’t quite know where he came from and where he might be going, but I do know this: I’d follow him anywhere. Congrats, Pierce-You’ve created a forever fan.

Oh, and Mustang…I will ALWAYS love you. No matter what. That is all. End of story.

I leave you with this. ♥

Recovering from a near-fatal gunshot wound, eighteen-year-old Evan Taylor must find a way to stop the Uprising, an underground movement committed to destroying the Union, before her homeland is attacked.

After spending the last four months in the Ruins trying to get back to the only girl he's ever loved, nineteen-year-old Cyrus needs to get past his jealousy over Evan's involvement with Bryce or risk losing her again.

With the help of old friends and new allies they set out to make history, but it might just take a miracle for everyone to make it out alive.

THE UPRISING is the third book in THE UNION series, a young adult romantic adventure set in the near future.

Review:

The Uprising was an epic journey that had me devouring the pages as fast as possible!  I easily found myself lost in all of the adventure, love, laughter, loss and plenty of risks all over again.  But this time around, many of the pieces of the puzzle were starting to move into place.  We got to see how certain events and even characters were fitting together, and it has me so ecstatic for what’s to come!   Especially since I found myself laughing, screaming, smiling, and crying while reading The Uprising.  You see, I’m completely addicted to the characters and storyline in this series.  So of course I loved every minute of it!  And here’s a few other reasons why I adore this series –

✮ Romance that rings true.

I should go home, head back out to the Ruins, so I don’t have to watch another person I love die.
But I can’t, not until I know she’s safe.
Even if it kills me. – Cyrus

Evan and Cyrus’ love for one another burned bright, and it was truly intoxicating!  But it was also a passionate, broken mess at times.  They both had so much expectation weighing on them, and sometimes that weight helped to easily lead them down that broken path.  Whether it was an ex coming back into the picture, or a poorly made decision, there was bound to be a few fights.  Even though I kept rooting for them to find the path that fit, their makeup scenes were scorching hot!

✮ A sigh inducing book boyfriend.

He sighs, squeezing me tighter and says so softly it’s almost a sigh, “I don’t know who I am without you anymore.”
The tears that have been threatening all day flood my eyes as I rest my head against the boy I love so fiercely it terrifies me.
“Ev,”he whispers.
I lift my head, wiping my eyes, and glance up at him. The depth of emotion in his eyes slams into me, leaving me speechless.
He lowers his face inch by agonizing inch until I feel the soft brush of my favorite lips. His mouth moves with mine in a way that’s both familiar and somehow different, desperate and exciting, drawing out emotions until my heart is spiraling. – Evan & Cyrus

This time around, we also got to hear the story in Cyrus’ point of view.  That made me extremely giddy.  You see, Cyrus always had a way of getting under my skin.  He was one of those characters that captured your attention in a quiet yet bold and confident way.  Whether it was baring his soul to Evan, or taking control of a military like tactic.  So being privy to his thoughts was addicting!  Cyrus’ feelings radiated off of the pages and easily landed themselves right into my heart.

✮ Friendships that are deep and meaningful.

“So, tell me what’s going on with you and the crazy redhead.”
“We’re not having this conversation, Rainey.”
“Sure we are. You’re acting like a giant ass, you know.” – Cyrus & Rainey

One of my favorite things about The Union Series was how friendships were cultivated throughout every moment.  Whether they were hanging out around a bonfire or they were trying to save their friend who had a gun to their head, each moment added up to making me feel as though I knew them inside out.  And in each book, I found myself becoming attached to yet another character.  This time around it was Rainey.  I loved how she was rough around the edges yet she was always there to push Cyrus to talk to her about Evan.  But to be honest, I’m scared because I’m getting attached to too many of them!

✮ Character I love to hate.

I can’t pretend her sleeping with that douche doesn’t piss me off. I want to punch something every time I see him, which is pretty much every fucking day. – Cyrus

Oh yes, I’m going there lol.  Yeah there are the typical bad guys to loathe, like Walker, but who I’m talking about is Bryce.  If you’ve read my previous reviews, you know that I clearly despise the guy.  I’ve shamelessly asked for his death, and all because he still harbors feelings for Evan.  I will admit that I enjoy loathing Bryce, yes I know I clearly must have issues, but seriously is it too much to ask for him to die?  Please.  Is there anyone else in the world that agrees with me?

She owns every last piece of me. – Cyrus

So if you love a story filled to the brim with adventure and characters that you will feel deeply connected to, then this is most definitely your book!  Or even if you enjoy a world that leaps off of the pages and has sigh worthy tender moments laced throughout, that can be found here also.  Stepping back into this series made my heart beat faster and oh so happy!  I can’t wait to see what happens next, especially after that ending!

BOOK REVIEW – Mockingjay (The Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne Collins

BOOK REVIEW – Mockingjay (The Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne CollinsMockingjay (The Hunger Games #3)
by Suzanne Collins

Synopsis:

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12.

Review:

I’ve never felt more lost wandering through my thoughts upon closure of a book.  If you were to ask me if I loved it?  Of course, yes!  And if you were to ask me if I was devastated and struggling because of that?  Again, of course, yes!  That’s because Mockingjay was everything I was hoping it would be and at the same time it was so many things I was hoping it wouldn’t be.  But if I throw my emotional side away for one moment, I see the genius in how this story unfolded.  Because it was thrilling, addicting and I loved that the plot wasn’t always something I could guess.  But if I bring my emotional side back into it, I have to say that it melted my heart and also shattered it into oblivion.  But since I am a little bit of a masochistic in certain scenarios, I can faithfully say that I’d go through the angst and suffering all over again.  Because that ending?  It was worth it!  But as a heads up, I’m ok with everything I was hoping it would not be because I don’t mind realistic outcomes in a fictional world.  But I do wish that some of the events would have had a few more lines or even paragraphs in future parts of the book.  But back to those realistic outcomes in fictional worlds, what I mean is:

  1.  In war, not everyone is going to get their happily ever after.  It’s not going to be pretty at times, and it can be beyond devastating and heartbreaking.  So when you step into war, take those thoughts of hoping that everyone is going to be safe and make sure to throw them as far away from you as you can.  And don’t ever look back.  Because they are stepping into the midst of a war, so it’s safe to say that what can happen in our world can easily happen in theirs.
  2. In real life, life isn’t always fair. So unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how hard one works, or how much they deserve a good future.  Because that can easily become irrelevant in war and life.  While I felt gutted over how some things played out, I get it because fictional worlds don’t have to be any less harsh than the ones we live in.
“President Snow says he’s sending us a message? Well, I have one for him. You can torture us and bomb us and burn our districts to the ground, but do you see that?” One of the cameras follows as I point to the planes burning on the roof of the warehouse across from us. The Capitol seal on a wing glows clearly through the flames. “Fire is catching!” I am shouting now, determined that he will not miss a word. “And if we burn, you burn with us!”

Now that I’ve gotten those thoughts out of my head, here’s the reasons why I fell in love this story so much, besides my reasons listed in my reviews of The Hunger Games and Catching Fire:

  1.  Friendships that warmed my heart.
  2.  Family that offered true love and understanding.
  3.  Watching alliances form between people who weren’t each other’s biggest fans.  When that happened, oh man, I was grinning like a loon.
  4.  And the biggest reason of all?  The hope that true love can conquer all.  When the world is beyond recognition and you have this teeny, tiny sliver of hope for true love, well that tiny little flame can lighten the darkest of places.
“You’re still trying to protect me. Real or not real,” he whispers.
“Real,” I answer.

While I never wanted this series to end, I have good feeling that I will be revisiting Katniss’ world many times again in the future. Hope you enjoyed or will enjoy this final book and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. Review:

I was nervous to step into this world.  But now that I am more than fully immersed, I find myself obsessed.  Whether it is the side characters that I care deeply care about.  The politics that become all consuming.  Villains that I want to murder myself.  Or the peril that fills the pages that somehow tops the insane intense moments from the The Hunger Games.  It all makes me look back at myself and laugh.  THIS is what I love.  Why did I ever let the notion of kids killing kids affect my want to read this series? Welllllll I still struggle with that aspect, BUT as I’ve said before – it’s worth it!  Even after that last page.  And that last page left me wanting to lay on my side and curl into a tiny ball.  But instead of doing that, which if I’m being truthful I’m still contemplating, I am stuck awake thinking back over every part of Catching Fire.  And these are by far my favorite aspects:

  1.  A boy worthy of being swoon worthy.

“I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,” Peeta replies.

Peeta won my heart over in The Hunger Games.  He was selfless and tried his hardest to protect Katniss.  Even when death was knocking on his door, he could be overheard whispering her name.  And even after being given a somewhat cold shoulder at times, nothing could erase his love for Katniss.  In Catching Fire, he pulls out all of the stops to protect the woman he loves.  He weaves lies to protect her.  He pours his heart out to her again.  And he puts himself on the line to save her again.  Peeta was butterfly inducing and most definitely swoon worthy.  He is my definition of what a book boyfriend should be.

  2.  Intense and action packed.

“Convince me,” he says.  He drops the napkin and retrieves his book.  I don’t watch him as he heads for the door, so I flinch when he whispers in my ear.  “By the way, I know about the kiss.”  Then the door clicks shut behind him.

I learned the hard way about never expecting any breaks in the action.  Because just when I thought they were getting a tiny reprieve, I was gravely mistaken.  Catching Fire seemed to move at a more intense speed than The Hunger Games, at times, and I loved it!  I constantly found myself in a death grip, clutching on for dear life.

  3.  A heroine whose choices and decisions are respectful.

Life in District 12 isn’t really so different from life in the arena.  At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead.  The hard thing is finding the courage to do it.

Katniss proved herself in The Hunger Games by taking her sister’s place and saving Peeta’s life.  But in Catching Fire, she ups her game.  She puts herself in an even more selfless position.  It made me so conflicted because I love the way she thought yet at the same time it terrified me for what would happen to her.  She is a heroine that continues to surprise me!

I love this book! Hopefully my love for the series will continue till the final page in Mockingjay!

Synopsis:

Winning will make you famous.
Losing means certain death.

The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, is a country that consists of a wealthy Capitol region surrounded by 12 poorer districts. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a 13th district against the Capitol resulted in its destruction and the creation of an annual televised event known as the Hunger Games. In punishment, and as a reminder of the power and grace of the Capitol, each district must yield one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. The 'tributes' are chosen during the annual Reaping and are forced to fight to the death, leaving only one survivor to claim victory.

When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. , she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

Review:

This review is for all of you out there that have held out, like I did, because you weren’t sure whether you wanted to read this book.  Whether it was the hype or you didn’t want to step into a world where kids brutally murdered other kids (I’m the latter). Where there could only be one winner out of twenty four contestants.  Where you’re afraid it’s filled with viciousness and that the pages will haunt you or make you cry.  Because that’s where I was.  But my lovely blog buddy, Chelsea, pushed me out of my comfort zone.  She bought me this trilogy and then after I still hadn’t read it, she organized a buddy read with five other of our friends.  There was no backing out after that.  While I was always morbidly curious what all the hype was about, I decided to plunge head first and hope that I’d make it out while clinging onto my sanity.  While I was an emotional mess through much of the story, it won me over.  And I hope you’ll step out of your comfort zone and read it too!

“Katniss, it’s just hunting. You’re the best hunter I know,” says Gale.
“It’s not just hunting. They’re armed. They think,” I say.
“So do you. And you’ve had more practice. Real practice,” he says. “You know how to kill.”
“Not people,” I say.

So what won me over?

  1.  A heroine I can respect.  First and foremost Katniss is one of the main reasons I fell in love with this book. She’s a survivor who stepped up and is the sole reason her family is alive and didn’t starve to death after her father died.  I respected how much responsibility she took on at a young age and how it morphed her into a determined, tough woman.  But she isn’t just a hunter and provider.  She’s a good friend to her best friend and fellow hunter, Gale.  And she is like a second mom to her little sister, Prim.  It was easy to like Katniss and to sympathize with her.  Especially when she stepped up and volunteered to take her sister’s place in The Hunger Games.
  2.  The simplistic aspect of the storytelling.  The way the story is delivered makes it easy to fall into their world.  The details are enough to get a good grasp on everything, but never to the point where it is overwhelming or will bore you.  It honestly reads as though I was having a movie play in my head.
  3.  A fast paced story that you’ll constantly be thinking about. It was impossible to put this book down.  There was so much going on that I had to know what would happen next.  And when I did have to put this book down due to life, boo, the scenes kept replaying in my head.  I kept trying to guess what was going to happen next, and it became all consuming!
  4.  A boy you will want to put your faith in, I think?   Peeta, her fellow district competitor, constantly had my attention and I struggled with how to view him.  At times he could appear so selfless and heartfelt and other times he would appear cold, calculating and a true opponent.  He will keep you intrigued and make you want to learn more about him.  Because in one moment he’ll be melting your heart and other times he will turn it to ice!  I loved Peeta because I’m twisted like that ha!
  5.  Peril that will leave you breathless.  This is what made me the most nervous to start the story.  I was terrified that my palms would never stop being sweaty or that my stomach would constantly be twisted in horror.  And I’m not going to lie, I was an emotional wreck.  I sobbed quiet a few times and it was hard to catch my breath at other times.  I never knew if there was ever going to be a break in the insanity that is their lives.  But when I read that final page, it was worth all of the emotional pain.  Because the story that unfolded, is one that will stick with me.  Even in the darkest moments of The Hunger Games, I was struck by the sincerity of some of their interactions.  Even when they were at their worst, people kept surprising me and gave me faith in humankind.

So to all my friends out there that haven’t read this, I beg you to take a chance.  You’ll meet characters you love and find a story that will stay with you in your heart. And I’m already counting the seconds until I can pick up the second book.  Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor.
