Synopsis:

Starting a new school is never easy and this time not fitting in could cost lives.

Despite being raised by shifters, my life was fairly ordinary . . . until I tried to break up a fight and got zapped with magic.

Then, all hell broke loose.

Power I didn’t know I had came surging out of me, revealing me as a witch and drawing unfavorable attention to my adoptive parents.

Now, as the witches attempt to use my concealment as an excuse to push an anti-shifter agenda, the only way to keep my parents—and myself—safe is to enroll in the elite Ravencrest Academy and prove I can control my newfound abilities.

Unfortunately, raw power doesn’t translate into competency and everything is way more difficult than I imagined.

Even with all the things working against me (like my complete ignorance of magic and witch society), I manage to make a few new friends and there's a spark of something more with the last person I expect.

But I can’t let that distract me from the ugly truth that many who walk the halls of Ravencrest are eager to see me fail. To keep the peace between shifters and witches I must succeed . . . no matter the cost.

Magic Bound is the first book in an exciting new YA paranormal academy series with a slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance. Perfect for fans of Supernatural Academy, Shadowspell Academy, and Evermore Academy.

Review:

Magic Bound was heartwarming, addictive and completely mesmerized me.  With characters that were easy to relate to and a story line that made this book impossible to put down, I devoured this book so fast!  It was just so much fun.  With enemies to lovers, magic and friendship swirling through the pages, Magic Bound easily landed on my favorites list!

The fragile hold I have on my emotions shatters, and the tears come down full force, followed by a hiccuping sob.
I can’t do this. I don’t want to be here. I want to go home.

Selene had been raised by her adoptive parents, who were shifters. She thought she was a blank, a child that had no magic and was from two witches. But a moment at a party went awry, and she discovered she had magic.  To help protect her adoptive family, since shifters should not have raised a child with magic, she was shipped off to Ravencrest Academy.  But life wasn’t easy there for Selene, and what unfolded had me turning the pages faster and faster.

The level of arrogance dripping off this guy is ridiculous. And I’ve dealt with moody alpha level shifters. It makes me want to punch him. Hard.

Selene is definitely one of my favorite heroines.  She was brave, kind, held her own, and acted from her heart. So she was someone I easily looked up to and respected. But oh my gosh did she struggle. She had problems with something as simple as opening a door, with her magic.   And because of how she was raised, and her lack of knowledge, others weren’t kind to her.  She was different.  She was an outsider.  But even though Selene struggled with magic, she was still completely kick ass. She had so much fire in her and I loved that she had a backbone and stood up for herself.  Especially when it came to her interactions with Tristan.

From the very first moment I met Tristan, he irritated me. The fact that he’s a St. James just makes it all the worse.

Ohhh the illustrious Tristan St. James.  I. Loved. Him!  He landed on my favorite book boyfriend list, but it wasn’t an easy path.  You see, Tristan was a total douche bag.  He wasn’t nice to Selene and he hurt her at times.  But I always looked for the tiniest of clues that Tristan was so much more than what he showed the world. And what I saw underneath it all, made me fall for him so hard.  As more of his past came to light, and we saw how he was raised, it all started to click together.

“You are a St. James after all. I don’t know why I ever expected better. You’re just as bad as everything I ever thought about your parents. Maybe worse. Perfect, pretty Tristan who always gets what he wants.”
“I always get what I want?” he asks, the question carried on a huff of incredulity. “If only that were true . . .”

Selene and Tristan had the most addictive slow burn enemies to lovers romance.  Especially since there was a forbidden feel to it, because of who they each were.  So I loved watching their interactions.  They butted heads, each had their preconceived notions and it was rough at times.  But I fell so hard watching them interact.  Moments made me smile and sigh, and others had me wondering how they could even be in the same room together lol.  So hold on because it was a bumpy ride.  On top of Selene and Tristan, there was friendships, family, school and even politics in the pages.

Tristan grabs my arm. “You didn’t have to do that. There’ll be . . . repercussions for you, won’t there? With your pack or whatever.”
“Did you think I was going to stand there and let you get hurt? That’s really not my style.” I tug my arm out of his hold.

The side characters rounded out this story so perfectly.  There was Basil, the eccentric “Grandpa” who helped guide Selene at the academy.  And whose quirks made me smile.  To Isobel, who was Selene’s roommate and was the sweetest girl ever.  To even her cousin Reid, who felt more like a brother and was someone I cared deeply for.  But my favorite side character was Adrian.  He was a fellow student who made me laugh and smile so much.  He seemed to have a lot of secrets, so I can’t wait to learn all about him in this series!

My entire world narrows down to nothing but the feel of his mouth on mine, his breath against my face, his fingers around my waist. And I am lost in it.

So, yup, this book had it all!  And that ending had me beyond excited to see what will happen next.  It was such an easy book to devour and understand their world.  Plus I loved so many of the characters.  So if you’re a fan of enemies to lovers, academy books or paranormal stories, then definitely add this one to your list!   I can’t recommend it enough!

Synopsis:

What happens when the boy you want most becomes the one person you can’t have?

Lane Jamison’s life is turned upside down the week before her senior year when her father introduces her to his new fiancée: mother of Grey McIntyre, Lane’s longtime secret crush. Now with Grey living in Lane’s house, there’s only a thin wall separating their rooms, making it harder and harder to deny their growing mutual attraction—an attraction made all the more forbidden by Grey’s long-term girlfriend Sadie Hall, who also happens to be Lane’s friend.

Torn between her feelings for Grey and her friendship with Sadie—not to mention her desire to keep the peace at home—Lane befriends Sadie’s older brother, Connor, the black sheep of the strict, evangelical Hall family. Connor, a metalworking artist who is all sharp edges, challenges Lane in ways no one else ever has. As the two become closer and start to open up about the traumas in their respective pasts, Lane begins to question her conviction that Connor is just a distraction.

Tensions come to a head after a tragic incident at a party, forcing Lane to untangle her feelings for both boys and face the truth of what—and who—she wants, in this gripping and stunningly romantic debut novel.

Review:

I’ve sat on this review for almost two weeks now. And that’s not normal for me.  At all.  But I kept thinking that as time passed, maybe my thoughts would change.  You see, while this story was an emotional powerhouse, I couldn’t connect to or like the majority of the characters.  So even though this book didn’t work for me, I have a feeling others are going to resonate and feel this story in their soul.  I wish I was one of those, but sadly I wasn’t.

He’d occupied my heart for years, long before he’d occupied the bedroom next to mine.
Seriously. Kill me.

Lane’s father just married her long term crushes mother.  Making Lane and her crush, Grey, step-siblings.  It could only be a crush though, since Grey was in a long term relationship with Sadie.  When Sadie befriended Lane as her new bff, it made life even more complicated for her.  And on top of that, Sadie’s brother Connor was thrown into the mix.  The story started off with the four of them hanging out, and it set the book off on a dark and dangerous tone that seeped through the rest of this story.

“It’s your happiness that matters.” He coughed into his sleeve, finally blinked down at the half-tied twine, still wound around his fingers. “It matters to me. It mattered to your mother. She’d have wanted—”
“She got what she wanted.”
It flew out on its own dark wings, beat its way past my teeth. Sunk its talons deep.

I tried my hardest, but I wasn’t ever able to connect to Lane.  She suffered from depression that cut so deep into her.  So Lane’s thoughts could be suffocating and I desperately hoped she would find lightness in her life.  Usually I can feel empathy towards a character, but I failed again and again to find it with her.  It didn’t help that she was blunt, cold and fickle at times.  But she was also extremely talented and had a lot of love to give.  I just couldn’t ever click with her.

“I’d rather have a firecracker than an ice queen. Trust me, Elaine— if Sadie were as cold as you, I’d have slit my wrists ages ago.”

Grey was a conundrum.  At first I thought he was a sweet boy.  He was helpful, seemed to try and make the situation with Lane at home work and he was kind about the friendship Lane had with his girlfriend. I completely understood why Lane liked him.  But as the story progressed, I got whiplash.  Grey would verbally attack Lane.  He could be so mean and cruel to her as his words cut at her heart.  And he wasn’t the only one who did that.  His girlfriend, Sadie, did too.  She’d call Lane her best friend and then in the next moment she’d talk trash to her face.  I didn’t know how to handle that at all.

Her eyes were wildfire; her mouth a wet blur. Her answer sliced through me, words honed to razors on her dark, bitter drawl. “Maybe not. But whatever you think of me, Lane, at least I’m not a whore.”

Thankfully Sadie did find logic and become the bigger person.  But by then it was too late for me, the blood that Lane shed was still too recent. And not enough was done to rectify the problem.  I’m one of those who needs a grand gesture to fix everything in a book, but I never got that from Sadie or Grey towards Lane.

A soft, pitiful noise worked its way up from my lungs. Chills broke across my skin like snowmelt, freezing, then slicing , dripping from scalp to neck to spine to soles. My eyes leaped up in time to catch his slipping over my shoulder, off the curve of my collarbone. They reached into me and burned and burned, and undid something in my chest.

One thing stood out on the pages, and that was the writing felt very unique at times.  It gave me Shatter Me vibes.  And while sometimes it lost me and I wasn’t sure what was happening, other times the writing was beautifully poetic.  When I think of this book, I’ll always remember the writing style.   And Connor.

“Loving you was the only thing that made sense.”
“Oh.” There it was again— that same warm thrill spinning through me, slipping along the current of his words.

Connor Hall was rumored to have been kicked out of his house, because he was gay. And we learned a lot about him as the story progressed.  Connor was my favorite in this story.  That’s because he was sweet, thoughtful and had a wild side to him.  And he tried to help Lane out, the best he could.  Even though he was dealing with his own personal struggles that were huge.  And while I loved when Lane hung out with Connor, they were each still drowning in their pain.  So I kept hoping that they’d help each other out.  And I’m happy with how their friendship proceeded.

He was still everything I’d wanted, before the things I wanted took on a different, darker form.

So at the end of the day, I’m still lost.  This story was emotional and the characters each had huge journeys to take.  The way it unfolded kept my interest piqued but I just couldn’t connect or make myself like the majority of the characters.  And I have to able to have that connection, so I can love a book.   So if you pick up Together We Caught Fire, I hope that you’ll find plenty more than I did to love in the pages!

Synopsis:

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

Review:

The Shadows Between Us is being advertised as a Slytherin romance and I can’t really think of a better description for it. However, I want to caution it fell on the Slytherin-lite side of things for me, as I think there were some missed opportunities for it to get darker and for the leads to really show how ruthless they were.

Alessandra is the main character of the book and the story is told entirely from her perspective. The opening of the book is one of the best ones in I’ve read in a long time. It quickly and fiercely set a tone for the book and gave us a perfect introduction to her. It’s why I truly wished there were more scenes later on that were like this. Alessandra is the youngest of two daughters and lives with her father. She’s constantly overlooked and only seen as a means to an end for her father. Because of this, she’s determined to meet, woo and kill the Shadow King and take his throne so she can lead the kingdom how she believes it should be run.

The early chapters were so much fun, with us learning why she is so cunning and self-assured. She knew how to get the king’s attention and how to prove to her father she was so much more than he gave her credit for. Once she gets to the king’s palace, things slow down for a while. We see Alessandra make friends and allies, who were all wonderful characters in their own right, put her schemes into motion and earn the king’s trust. We also see Alessandra make all of her own outfits, as she is a skilled seamstress, which I thought was a really nice touch. A lot of MC’s seem to lack any kind of hobbies and it was great to see this represented.

As for the king, his name is Kallias and is your fairly typical dark and brooding boy king with a softer side. We learn a lot about his backstory, which was appropriately tragic and made me really feel for him. He’s determined to figure out who murdered his parents, and thus, has problems trusting others. He also has an adorable dog named Demodocus (and nothing happens to him, just fyi!).

Their relationship is definitely of the slow burn variety, but I enjoyed their private (and sometimes public) interactions. Their approaches to sexuality and past relationships was very open and honest and incredibly refreshing. It was great to see Alessandra so confident in her sexuality and the lack of judgement from Kallias about it.

There’s a lot of court happenings and some side storylines that keep the story moving outside of the main plot. The pacing of the book was a bit uneven overall, but I felt the book really stuck the landing. As I mentioned before, the main thing I wanted more out of this book was taking the Slytherin aspect of the book farther. A lot of problems are easily resolved and the internal conflict for Alessandra over how/when to kill Kallias is dissolved quickly. The opening of this book was pretty much the only moment of its kind and didn’t end up the setting the precedent I wish it would have.

Overall, I thought this book was a lot of fun and had great characters. With a few tweaks, this could have been a five-star read instead of just a four. It’s good as a standalone, but I won’t be surprised if in the future there’s ever a followup. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing what Kallias and Alessandra are up to a few years down the line.

Favorite Quotes:

They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will.

*

“You are beautiful,” he continues. “But not so beautiful to tempt me. You are everything I am looking for. You are perfect.”

*

“Kallias.” I say, letting the syllables drift off my tongue: kuh-LIE-us.

I have been entrusted with the name of a king.

Now I need him to give me his heart.

*

Kallias, who stood by my entrance, says, “You kept him waiting. Belly rubs are the price you must pay.”

*

“Alessandra Stathos, that’s positively despicable.” He says the words like they’re the highest compliment he can give me. “You are an absolute gem, do you know that?”

*

“Rest assured, the only dangerous thing out here is me.”

“And should I fear you?” I ask.

“Never.”

*

His answering smile is that of a predator, masculine pride at its finest.

*

“You and I are playing a very dangerous game.”

*

“I can’t stand being alone for one second longer. I can’t stand being apart from you for one second longer.”

*

“And though I will not have millennia to live, I want to give however many years I have left to you. Because I love you. I love the woman who saved me. And though she doesn’t need me, I want her. Fiercely. All the time in the world is worth nothing if I don’t get to spend it with you.”

#YourNextBBF & Giveaway: Becks from Adorkable by Cookie O'Gorman

I’m so excited to join along with the Meet Your Next Book Boyfriend Tour!  So check out my interview with Cookie O’Gorman below!  See why I can forever gush about Becks from ADORKABLE by Cookie O’Gorman.  I’ve listed some of my favorite quotes, which I’ve re-read an embarrassing number of times lol.  And there’s a fabulous giveaway you can enter too!  Good luck! ♥

About Adorkable:

Adorkable (ah-dor-kuh-bul): Descriptive term meaning to be equal parts dorky and adorable. For reference, see Sally Spitz. Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she’s done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There’s only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take. Her solution: she needs a fake boyfriend. And fast. Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around-hottie, and Sally’s best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He’d do anything for Sal–even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she’s “more than pretty,” and expertly kissing her at parties. The problem: Sally’s been in love with Becks all her life–and he’s completely clueless. This book features two best friends, one special edition Yoda snuggie, countless beneath-the-ear kisses and begs the question: Who wants a real boyfriend when faking it is so much more fun?

Interview With Cookie O’Gorman:

✮ What’s one thing you hope readers will take away from ADORKABLE?
I hope readers take a lot away from ADORKABLE!  I hope it gives them a moment to laugh and smile, swoon and sigh–and geek out lol!

✮ What was your inspiration for this book?
Honestly, I was inspired to write ADORKABLE because I wanted to write a fun, funny, swoon-worthy YA romance!  And because I’m a dork and love other dorks :).  Also, I just wanted to put something positive into a world with a lot of sadness.  We need more happily-ever-afters!

✮ What is something that we might not know about Becks?
Hmm…Becks’s full name is Baldwin Eugene Charles Kent.  He loves soccer and is amazing at it.  He has a big, tight-knit, awesome family (youngest of five brothers, you guys).  He gives the best hugs on the planet, and he’d do anything for his best friend, Sal.  She’s his girl <3.  He’s also super hot, smart and kind.  And for the thing you might not know: He’s my ideal book boyfriend, and I’m basically in love with him.

✮ What was your favorite quality about Becks?
Ugh, that is so hard!  Can I just cheat and say ‘everything’ ha?  There is so so much to love about Becks…but if I had to pick my favorite quality…I guess I would say how kind/loving he is to Sally.  He really is her best friend (and soulmate).

✮ Without spoilers, what was your favorite scene to write?
My favorite scene to write was definitely the scene in Becks’s bedroom where they do the PDA lessons–and the shaving scene at the party *swoons*.  I’m sorry; I couldn’t choose just one!

✮ Did you know how this book was going to end when you started writing?
Yes!!!  Though I did have to re-write it several times before I got it just right.

✮ And who is your most recent book boyfriend?
My most recent book boyfriend who I love is Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses series!  Gah, love him!

Why I love Becks:

Becks was Sally’s BFF.  He was beautiful, a player, a jock and everyone easily loved him.  Including myself.  He was one of my favorite things about this book!  And a lot of it had to do with the way he looked at Sally, the way he claimed her as his, the way he protected her, his jealousy, oh my gosh to even the way he touched her.  It ALL made my heart beat faster.

But I had no clue what he was thinking some of the times, since we only got Sally’s POV.  Becks would say and do these things that implied he liked Sally more than just friends.  But then again, he was just playing a part of being her fake boyfriend.  And his words would reinforce that.  But when he suggested that they should start practicing touching….oh my goodness you guys….I had so many butterflies.

Becks conquered my heart so easily.  He stole my breath.  He made me fall in love.  He made me laugh and smile.  He was everything.  And you all definitely need to meet him!

Quotes That Make Me Happy:

Ducking, he placed a lingering kiss on the spot right below my ear. The move made my hand shoot out to grip his jersey. Becks laughed silently, little puffs of air hitting my neck, as I shivered.

✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮

“But Becks,” she whined, “I don’t understand. Why her?”
“Nothing to understand really,” he said, smiling down at me. “Sal’s my girl. Always has been.”
As he squeezed my hip, I swear I stopped breathing.

✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮

He was just acting, I reminded myself. But he’d sounded sincere, my heart insisted. And that kiss…

✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮

With every pass of his mouth, I became a little more his.

✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮

Even if he still just saw me as Sal, his friend who was a great girl but not girlfriend material, the thing I’d take with me, the feeling I’d bottle up and keep in my pocket if I could, was this: Becks kissed me like he meant it.

✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮✩✮

“What’s your dream girl like?”
“Freckles,” he said, not missing a beat.
“What?” I scoffed, secretly pleased. I had freckles! “Way to narrow the field, Baldwin.”
“You didn’t let me finish.” Eyes moving over me with a focus that made my breath catch, he said, “Cute freckles, wavy brown hair, about five-six, hazel eyes. Naturally beautiful.”
“Becks—”
“She’s smart.” He talked right over me. “Can quote Star Wars, curses like a German sailor when she’s mad. Someone who makes me laugh out loud, a girl who’s herself and lets me be me. Sounds pretty great, right?” I stared at him. A moment , two hours, I didn’t know. He’d sounded sincere, but he couldn’t be. I wasn’t that lucky.

Review

“The world doesn’t work with only your eyes, Princess. There’s truth in more than what you can see.”

I am bound and determined to write this review today, even if I’m in a terrible mood because of work and my pregnancy rage that I seem to have in abundance lately.

This was an impressive first book by this author and a start to what I think is a duology. Her writing was captivating, the magic system seemed a lot different than the typical run-of-the-mill stuff in YA, and the world building was phenomenal and I want more, more, more. In the blurb on Goodreads it mentions how this would be for fans of the Caraval series and honestly, I agree with that when it came to the crew visiting the different islands. Every place was so unique along with the people there that is was truly magical.

Other than my intensely piqued curiosity over why/how Amora didn’t seem to know ANYTHING going on in her soon-to-be-kingdom, the main reason I enjoyed this book so much was the characters. Dudes, Amora is kick ass. Some of the scenes with her fighting and using her magic were so visceral…Sometimes that bothers me depending on how intense it is but here, it was so impressive. She might not be that relatable to most common people in that aspect but there are other parts of her that are. She cares SO much for her people, her kingdom and was horrified when she learned what kinds of things were happening that she didn’t know about. I loved her surety that she was the right person to next take charge of the kingdom because she wanted to fix things so badly. Even with that surety though, she still had moments of vulnerability that bring her more down to earth. I greatly enjoyed reading about her journey through the book and can’t wait to see what the next one will bring, especially after that ending.

Bastian, obviously, was a favorite as well (and I think he’ll be a fan favorite with basically everyone). He’s a dashing pirate that’s impeccably dressed and has a smile that earned an insta-swoon from me. There were a few STEAMY kisses that I loved, obviously. And again, I can’t wait to see what the next book brings for him as well after that ending……….As for Ferrick, he really grew on me (wasn’t sure what to think of him at first, kinda annoyed me a little) and now that I’m thinking about it, that’s kinda punny, lol. Vataea too, also super badass. Hope to see her use more of her magic in the next book.

Overall, solid start, but just wasn’t quite a five star read for me. Might just be my mood though (as I said, I’m super pregnant and super tired and some days super cranky, lol). Will 100% be snatching up that second book!

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Imprint for allowing me to read an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
