Synopsis:

Part two of the literary sci-fi thriller follows a boy and a girl who are caught in a warring town where thoughts can be heard — and secrets are never safe. Reaching the end of their flight in THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO, Todd and Viola did not find healing and hope in Haven. They found instead their worst enemy, Mayor Prentiss, waiting to welcome them to New Prentisstown. There they are forced into separate lives: Todd to prison, and Viola to a house of healing where her wounds are treated. Soon Viola is swept into the ruthless activities of the Answer, while Todd faces impossible choices when forced to join the mayor’s oppressive new regime. In alternating narratives the two struggle to reconcile their own dubious actions with their deepest beliefs. Torn by confusion and compromise, suspicion and betrayal, can their trust in each other possibly survive? Includes “The Wide, Wide Sea,” a short story by Patrick Ness.

Review:

Read with Chelsea 🙂 Thank you for dealing with my billions of “what the what?!” hysterical texts. ♥ (shut up)

It was an astounding page turner, but my thoughts are all over the map after reading this book. I loved it, I hated it, I was overjoyed, and then I was cast downwards into a deep depression. The storyline was so intense and sometimes it went so dark that I found myself struggling to stay afloat. And just when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, something astronomical happens. It’s as if I’m freefalling into oblivion and there’s no stopping my panicking and pain and then the next thing I know I’m being whipped upwards towards safety and it’s like I am sailing ecstatically through the clouds. Never before have my emotions towards a book or its characters been so chaotic. Even though I did emotionally struggle with parts of this book I HAVE to continue this series. When any book can toy with your emotions and feelings towards a storyline and characters so much, there is something HUGE there. And you have to continue on, even if you know your heart may get broken again and again.

I know this is the end, the end of all things, I can never escape from here and he’ll kill me and kill her and there’s no chance, no life, no hope, nothing.

After that insane cliff hanger in TKONLG, we are still struggling to figure out what’s going to happen to Todd and Voila. How can a moment that was supposed to be so happy and monumental turn into a life sentence of doom and possible death? My mind was reeling from that. Todd and Viola are forcefully separated and neither knows if the other is really alive. The others well-being and life is being dangled in each of their faces. They are each told that as long as they comply with what they are told to do, then the other will stay alive. They are trapped, and they are left with no choice. Because each will do anything, and I do mean anything, to make sure the other one will stay alive. And so the path of deceit, tarnishing your soul, strength and bravery begins.

I’m still the same ol’ stupid effing Todd Hewitt, powerless to do anything, powerless to save myself much less her.

I struggled with Todd in TKONLG and I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t struggle with him in this book. He is SUCH a redeemable person but it pained me to watch his soul turn so black in this book. His actions and lack of actions broke my heart again and again. His choices or lack of choices, depending upon how you see it, was devastating. He is on such a hard journey and I kept hoping against hope that he would be given the chance to redeem himself. Because when Viola is in the picture, he is an amazing man. An absolutely amazing man that takes your breath away. His love towards her is so intense and so innocent that you can’t help but instantly fall in love with him. And I honestly didn’t know if I would ever see that Todd again.

We all fall but that’s not what matters. What matters is picking yourself up again.

I love Viola. She is strong, resilient, smart and her love for Todd is remarkable. I agreed with her choices and values and she is definitely a force to be reckoned with! I loved getting to read part of the book from her point of view. It was fascinating being in her head and following her on her journey and meeting all the new characters she was introduced to. All in all? I really liked this book! The action was intense, the characters were truly unique, my love towards some characters turned sour and others whom I never once saw as redeemable I truly started to like and care for. But some parts seriously disturbed me and even reminded me of past historical events that are truly horrifying. I didn’t realize how dark this book could go. But even with all of my problems with the book, I’m still continuing onward. And I’ll still be recommending this to my friends that I know can handle the storyline and the issues that bothered me. Now onto the final leg of the journey, and here’s hoping my Kindle doesn’t get thrown across the room again like in TKONLG. 🙂

Synopsis:

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -- something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd's gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is. Includes “The New World,” a short story by Patrick Ness.

Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to finishing the series because I HAVE to know what happens. It’s written unlike anything I have ever read, and I loved it! The writing has this ability to suck you in and make you become completely lost in Todd’s world. An hour will pass and you’ll have no clue that you have been reading that long because it feels as though you’ve only had your book open for five minutes. And I loved the main character Todd and his faithful dog Manchee. The journey they embark on is enthralling and I was constantly needing to know what was going to happen next! I was convinced from the beginning that this was going to be a 5 star book for me. But then there’s a scene that takes place that destroyed a piece of the happiness and joy I discovered while reading Todd and Manchee’s journey. I sobbed hysterically. This part broke my heart into a million pieces and then those millions of pieces somehow shattered even more. I became tainted with how I viewed a character and although I’m going to finish the series I still can’t help but think about IT. It IS a magnificent story, it does have amazing characters and the writing is completely addicting so THAT is why I’m continuing on, even though my heart is still in pieces.

Life ain’t fair.
It ain’t.
Not never.
It’s pointless and stupid and there’s only suffering and pain and people who want to hurt you. You can’t love nothing or no one cuz it’ll all be taken away or ruined and you’ll be left alone and constantly having to fight, constantly having to run just to stay alive.

We start out the book in Prentisstown, where everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts. No one has any privacy and even the animals’ talk. Todd is just a young boy and while he is the swamp one day, with his dog Manchee, something happens. He doesn’t understand what is happening or why he has to leave but he is being forced to flee the only town he has ever known. The only folks that have ever loved him. And all he can take with him is a backpack, some supplies and his best pal Manchee. There’s one problem though. The people chasing after him can hear his thoughts. So how in the world do you escape or hide when they always know what you are thinking?

I squeeze my eyes shut tight. And there’s only blackness. Only blackness and nothing. One more time, I’ve ruined everything. One more time, I’ve done everything wrong.

The premise of the book and the way the story flows is fascinating. The way the story speaks to us is truly unique. Listening to Todd narrate the story with his “direkshuns” (directions), “civilizayshun” (civilization) and “concentrayshun” (concentration) makes you feel more one with their world. It’s so real that it feels as though you could blink your eyes and the next thing you know you would be standing next to him. Todd is a determined boy and he has such a sensitive heart that you can’t help but love him. His struggles and the situations that he finds himself in again and again makes your heart ache for him. You’re constantly wishing that he catches some break. A tiny break. Any break. Because his journey is unthinkably hard. The choices he has to make would break a man apart, and he is just a boy. And then we have Manchee. Gah, I love, love, love that dog! Sometimes I think I loved him more than Todd. He is such an amazing friend. His words can be so hilarious, he loves Todd with his whole heart, he is the best companion anyone could ever ask for and he is fearless. Manchee IS the definition of man’s best friend. Being able to hear his voice completely humanizes him and therefore you’re stuck with not only worrying about what’s going to happen to Todd but Manchee too.

I think how hope may be the thing that pulls you forward, may be the thing that keeps you going, but that it’s dangerous, too, that it’s painful and risky, that it’s making a dare to the world and when has the world ever let us win a dare?

All in all, I struggle with two issuesView Spoiler » and since the book contained one of those, I can never truly love the book completely. I definitely loved parts of it, many, many parts but I can never love it as a whole. Unfortunately, that scene took something that was entirely wonderful in my mind, and cast a shadow over the book and a character. I WILL be continuing the series and I am hoping my attitude towards a character will change but it is what it is and that event can never be taken back. The writing, characters, storyline are all fascinating and make an addicting read. I’ll definitely be recommending this to people who don’t struggle with the same issues that I do. But at the end of the day, I’m still stuck reeling over a decision that was made that I can’t completely agree with. I’m hoping that the next book has everything I loved about this book but just without that one heart wrenching part.

Maybe if I was a killer, they wouldn’t be dead. And that’s a trade I’d make any day. I’ll be a killer, if that’s what it takes. Watch me.

Why I’m upset – huge, huge spoilers – View Spoiler »

Synopsis:

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

Review:

I so wanted to fall in love with Beautiful Darkness. Sadly, that did not happen and I won’t be finishing this series. What I liked and tolerated in the first book, ended up rubbing me the wrong way in BD. The slow pace that was once sweet, satisfying and left me so happy now has become something that made me not want to pick up the book each time I placed it down. The actions of the main characters made me fall out of love with them and I ended up preferring the secondary characters more. And lastly, the thing that made my final decision for not continuing this series was that the ending crumbled into a pile of too easy and too many coincidences.

We start out the book with Lena starting to withdraw from Ethan. She is in a world of pain for using The Book Of Moons. One life for another. The weight of that consequence is pushing her so far into the ground that her lightness and happiness is fading and fading fast. She seems to be distancing herself from Ethan and it’s not only breaking her apart, but Ethan at the same time. I more than understand her reasoning and plight but I just felt that it was drawn out way longer than necessary, therefore making me start to lose my interests.

Ethan is in the dark. He doesn’t remember what happened on the night of Lena’s sixteenth moon. He doesn’t remember dying and therefor doesn’t understand the consequences. He is left reeling why the girl he loves is pulling away other than she is in a severe depression over Macon. Ethan is still sweet as ever but his actions bothered me. Not asking Amma questions, not telling her things that were happening and his interactions with Liv all disturbed me and slowly made me fall out of love with him.

The ending, unfortunately, is what made my final decision about this book. The fact that Ethan struggled for something to happen, but it was a cakewalkView Spoiler ». It made me not understand why half of the book happened in the first place. It negated everything that happened and made me so depressed. Even though I know some of my friends loved this series, I just can’t continue. While I’m curious to know what happens, I just can’t push myself to finish this series.

Review:

**Unfortunately, I won’t be finishing this series. What I liked and tolerated in the first book, ended up rubbing me the wrong way in BD.***

This book was slow and steady, just like when you pour honey out of a jar. You want it to be faster, but if you change the properties of it then it just won’t have the same effect. No matter how much the slow pace is a nuisance, for people like me, it is so worth it! It’s sweet, satisfying and leaves you so happy. Ethan is one of the reasons for that. He was one of the sweetest boys I have ever read about. He’s not my type, but his attitude and morals are nothing but enjoyable and just adds to the pleasant feel of Beautiful Creatures. Honestly, I’m shocked. In the beginning, I couldn’t see myself continuing this series. But then I found myself sucked in and falling for Ethan and the world he lives in. By the time I got to the end of the book, it was no surprise that I cried as much as I did. I fell for this book, and I fell for it hard.

So that was my secret, all there was to tell. I was sixteen years old, I was falling in love with a girl who didn’t exist, and I was slowly losing my mind.

I went into this book not remembering anything about the blurb that I had read years ago. To be honest, I thought it had something to do with dragons. That’s how clueless I was. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised. We start out the book being introduced to Ethan. He has these recurring dreams that are vividly real. So real that he wakes up with mud under his fingernails, just like in the dreams. They have become something that he has learned to accept and live with. Except that he is haunted by the female that is in the dreams. He is completely intoxicated by her and yet he hasn’t even met her. He’s a pretty typical boy besides the dreams – plays basketball, has a good group of friends and goes through life always hoping that he’ll eventually find someone that actually gets him. His home life is a little depressing. His dad has become a recluse since his mom passed away and the home keeper, Amma, is now the one that raises him. I loved Amma! She was sassy and fun! Ethan seems to have a lot of female influence in his life. Between Amma, his funny Great Aunt’s and learning a little about how his mother was, I finally started to understand where his feminine personality comes from. It bugged me a little in the beginning, but once I started to realize that it fits with his lifestyle, surroundings and his role models it started to make more sense. Ethan is honorable, loyal, softhearted, smart and even though he wasn’t a bad boy, I still found myself falling for him.

She looked up at me, and the whole world disappeared. Like there was just us, like there would always be just us, and we didn’t need magic for that. It was sort of happy and sad, all at the same time. I couldn’t be around her without feeling things, without feeling everything.

Lena Duchannes arrives in town with huge strikes against her. She doesn’t wear cool clothes, she isn’t tan, and she’s the niece of the shut-in that lives in the creepy mansion. Lena was a tough cookie to connect with sometimes, but I really enjoyed her. She was driven, courageous, spunky and tried her hardest to be the best that she could be. And when sweet Ethan meets spunky Lena you just knew that their relationship was one that you would be rooting and hoping for. Watching them throughout the book was like watching your first love re-bloom. Their relationship evolved gently, sometimes awkwardly and was so innocent. No matter how dark the world got around them they had this pureness between the two of them that was just perfectly beautiful.

I never loved you any more than I do, right this second. And I’ll never love you any less than I do, right this second.

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. Even though I prefer something that is fast paced and has a bad boy as one of the main characters, I still liked this book. The slow pace became mesmerizing and Ethan’s sweet boy attitude made me fall for him and his relationship with Lena even more. I can’t wait to start the next book to continue figuring out what’s going on and what’s going to happen with everyone!

Review:

Sometimes you click with a book and other times you don’t. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to click with this book. While it contains interesting characters, intriguing mythology and a pace that I enjoy, I just didn’t fall in love with Awaken. If I would have read this book a year ago, I know I would have loved it. I would have continued the series and gushed about it to anyone and everyone. But unfortunately and fortunately in the last year I have read some amazing books. Not only did they take a piece of my heart but they completely changed my interactions and expectations of books. Now I’m always looking for something that immerses me in the world in which I am reading and also makes the world around me disappear. I’m always looking for the next book or series that will steal another piece of my heart while I am engrossed in feeling everything the main character is feeling. While Awaken is a nice book, it just didn’t speak to me on that level.

One of the main reasons I didn’t completely connect with Awaken was because of Stasia and Finn’s relationship. I did desperately want more from them. More heart to hearts, more passion, more honesty and a little less cheesiness. I love mystery and peril but sometimes it’s bothersome when such a tight unit that is supposed to love each other more than life itself isn’t always honest with each other. A lot of times I can make myself overlook that issue. Everyone is human and has faults so why would characters be any different? But when I can’t completely love a couple then it becomes something that sticks out. The delayed conversations and hidden truths become something that I am not able to get past and therefore it taints the relationship even more.

Awaken does have a strong heroine who has a sexy boyfriend and a great group of friends. The mythology is fun and the story flows at a nice pace. I just wanted more than what it was able to deliver. More passion, more honesty, and mainly more feelings invoked in me. But even though I didn’t connect with it doesn’t mean you won’t! Here’s hoping you do!
