Excerpt:

Twenty minutes later, feeling refreshed and smelling like one of the jasmine-scented shampoos she’d found in the welcome basket, she stepped out of the bathroom. Her hair was wet but combed, and she’d wrapped a towel around her to cross the hall to the bedroom.

Halfway there, she froze at the sound of footsteps in her living room.

Holding her breath, she stood motionless in place as she listened for another step. Had Cade come back? Surely he wouldn’t have just let himself in. A soft scuffling sounded across the hardwood and what sounded like a grunt. Or maybe it was more like an oink.

An oink? What the heck?

She scanned the hallway for any kind of weapon. Seeing nothing, she reached back into the bathroom and grabbed the hairdryer from the sink then took a tentative step forward. She paused as she considered her options—she could either shrink back and hope whoever, or whatever it was left on their own, tiptoe forward, or charge loudly into the room in an effort to scare her assailant or thief away.

Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the hairdryer and silently counted to three. Emitting a primal yell, she charged into the room. “Get out of here!”

Her yell turned into a scream as she faced the intruders currently making themselves at home in her new bunkhouse apartment.

She blinked, not quite able to believe her eyes. A giant hog was lounged out across her sofa and a black and white Billy goat was standing on her coffee table calmly eating the peanut butter and jelly sandwich her mom had made her for supper. A corner of the torn paper sack was stuck to the side of his lip.

“Get out!” she yelled as she brandished the hair dryer like a pistol then took a quick step back as the goat finished the sandwich then climbed down from the table and advanced toward her.

“Get away goat,” she commanded as she backed toward the kitchen. The goat took another few steps toward her, blocking her path to the hallway and forcing her toward the front door.

She pushed back her shoulders, attempting to appear taller as she tried to hold her ground. She was bigger than him, but he had those scary looking horns. She swallowed as she watched his gaze drop. “Don’t even think about it,” she said. She wasn’t sure exactly what he was thinking, but she could see that goat’s wheels turning and knew he was contemplating something. And it couldn’t be good.

The goat licked his lips then leapt forward and grabbed the bottom corner of her towel. Gripping the cloth between his teeth, he drew back his head…and pulled.

“Ahh,” she yelled as she dropped the hair dryer and clasped the towel around her chest. She kicked her foot toward the animal. “Let go, you beast!”

The goat seemed adept at this game and nimbly evaded her kick.

“What’s all the yelling about?” a man’s voice asked, just as she yanked back and ran smack into a solid wall of muscle.

She shrieked before she realized she’d once again landed herself in the arms of Cade Callahan. “Help, this goat is attacking me.”

“It’s okay. He’s not attacking you. He just wants your towel,” he said, a hint of amusement in his voice.

“Well, he can’t have it. I’m currently using it at the moment.”

“That’s Otis, and I have to admit his social graces are a bit lacking. Not like Tiny there,” he gestured to the pig lounging on the sofa. “She’s a real sweetheart. That was nice of you to turn on the television for her. She loves that show.”

“I didn’t turn it on for her. I just got out of the shower, and she was here. Along with this brute.” She leaned back again, pulling on the towel as it slipped further down her chest. “Now that we’re through with the introductions, could you please free my towel from that dang goat’s grip?”

Cade pressed his lips together in what looked like an effort to keep from laughing. “Sure. Since you said please and all.” He wrapped a hand around the goat’s mouth and tried to pry the towel from his teeth.

Otis set his feet and yanked back.

“Eep,” Nora squeaked as the towel inched even lower. “Cade, I know we just met, but we’re about to get to know each other a lot better if you don’t free my towel from that goat’s teeth.”

He chuckled. “Now you’re just teasing me.” His gaze did a quick slide over her bare shoulders and down to the top of her breasts, which were about to break free of the edge of the towel. His lips curved into a roguish grin. “Would you think poorly of me if I admitted I’m half-tempted to let the goat have it?”

Heat surged up her spine, and she could feel the warmth coloring her cheeks. Thankfully Cade turned back to Otis instead of waiting for her to respond. He pried the goat’s mouth open again and this time successfully wrested the fabric free.

He let the towel drop, and she quickly hiked it up, adjusting it as best she could to cover all her essential bits. “Oh my gosh. Thank you.”

“No problem.” He opened the door and shooed the goat outside. “You want the pig out too, or do you want to let her finish this episode?”

She laughed. She had too. This situation was just too hilarious. “I’d prefer to have her out too. At least until I’m dressed.”

“Come on, Tiny.” He held the door open as he called to the pig, who gave him a huff and an annoyed oink, but climbed down off the sofa. “She apparently thinks she’s a dog. She was raised by a teenager who treated her that way.”

“That explains it.”

“She’s a pretty sweet pig though, all things considered.”

Tiny shuffled toward the door, but stopped in front of Nora, tipping her head up and offering her what Nora swore looked like a smile, before trotting outside to lay down on the porch. “I think that pig might have just smiled at me.”

“Wouldn’t surprise me a bit.”

“Everything about this day, and this place, is surprising me.” Including the flirty comments from the cute cowboy. She clutch the towel to her chest. “My heart is still racing.”

“Your heart is racing? Darlin’, I’m the one who just missed out on seeing a naked woman having a tug-of-war with a goat.”

Synopsis:

Holly St. Ives is in a rut. Once a celebrated artist making waves in New York City, she finds herself uninspired and unmotivated. Her recent break-up is the last push she needs to spend Christmas alone in the small mountain cabin her father left her in his will—a family getaway she hasn’t visited in years.

After a near accident in Silverwood, she meets Nick, whom she learns is responsible for everything in the small town running like clockwork—including the upcoming Christmas festival and the town’s entry in the state-wide tree decorating contest. Holly doesn’t have time for Nick’s beguiling charm or mouth-watering holiday cupcakes, but after meeting his father, she discovers there’s more to the town’s obsession with the contest than meets the eye.

Touched by the prospect that the whole town is willing to pitch in for a good cause, Holly feels her Christmas spirit making a comeback. As Nick and his team of Alaskan Malamutes work their way into her heart, Holly may just remember the meaning of the season after all.

Review:

Christmas in Silverwood was beyond adorable and had all the Christmas feels. This story played out like a movie and I could easily see myself watching this on the Hallmark channel some day! If you adore Christmas stories that are sweet and set in a small town, then you definitely need this book in your life!

“Sometimes we need to trust we’re being led down the right path before we understand the destination.”
But which path is the right one?

After Holly St. Ives broke up with her boyfriend, she traveled to her family’s cabin to spend the holidays alone. She was ready to do some soul searching and figure out where she should go from here. On her way there, Holly had a near collision meet cute with Nick Mason. I loved their chemistry right away! And it was all thanks to Nick’s dog Cupid, named after the reindeer.

He’d written her a note. She wondered if he did that for everyone who got a welcome box from him. Somehow, she doubted it. A note and cupcakes. Sweet greetings. He made them himself, just for her. Maybe Nick wasn’t so bad after all.

I adored Holly! She was someone you would want to be friends with. She shared her thoughts and fears with us, and I loved watching the magic of the holidays come alive through her eyes. With adorable neighbors, a quaint town, stores I desperately wanted to visit, I found myself rooting for Holly every step of the way. I loved seeing every side of Holly, and watching her grow from that first page to the last!

His eyes roamed her face. “Well, maybe Santa will send some Christmas elves to help you out.”
Before she could answer, he gave her a nod and walked toward the door.
“Come on, Cupid. Time to go.” He pulled the door open and smiled at Holly.

Then there was Nick, sigh. Nick lived in the town of Silverwood and was beyond multitalented. From his baking skills, to helping out the community and volunteering, to even running his family’s tree farm, I loved how determined and focused Nick was. But he also had this kind and marshmallowy side to him while also being intriguing, sexy and an unknown. Nick knew what he wanted in life and I thought he would be the perfect fit for Holly!

He’d leaned closer and whispered, “That feeling you must be experiencing right now? That look on your face? That’s not someone who doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas.”

This story was soooo cute! With tons of Christmas cheer, miracles, friendship and love in the pages, this book was so easy to devour! The town and its townspeople were adorable and the story-line was a lot of fun. And as someone who usually looks for angst in their romance, I loved the low angst in this book! It fit oh so perfectly with the story-line. It felt like a Hallmark movie in book form and I was so happy while reading. It had some of the most fabulous, cheesiest moments ever that I loved, and one of those scenes even made me cry happy tears!

Nick leaned over the railing of the truck. “Holly, what are you doing?”
“Counting on a Christmas miracle.” She stood and faced him, filled with a surge of optimism.

Christmas in Silverwood was a heartwarming, feel-good book that romance lovers will enjoy! I definitely need to go check out Dorothy Dreyer’s backlist of books!

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls by Katie Mettner

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls by Katie Mettner

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls by Katie MettnerA Christmas at Gingerbread Falls by Katie Mettner

Synopsis:

Actress Carrie Murray’s films are a Christmas lover’s delight. Filled with twinkling lights, festive carols, and happy endings, they’re the perfect escape from reality—for her and the audience. Then Tinseltown calls.

Braxton Timothy is Hollywood’s biggest action star. Handsome and talented but decidedly on the naughty list, no one can fathom his sudden desire to produce a feel-good Christmas movie—least of all, his no-name co-star.

Alternating between scenes reminiscent of everyone’s favorite made-for-TV movies and unexpected, off-screen chemistry, Gingerbread Falls has surprises in store this holiday season. The question is, will there be enough Christmas magic to convince two imperfect people that they’re perfect for each other?

Review:

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls was an adorable and emotion filled Christmas story. With snow falling, a Christmas town setting, and filming a Hallmarkish movie there was a lot of heart in the pages. If you enjoy Christmas stories, then you may want to put this one on your tbr list!

“I do enough of these movies, I should be overflowing with the stuff,” she huffed, her breath puffing frosty white rings into the air.
“Overflowing with what stuff?” a voice asked.
Carrie whirled around and slipped on a patch of snow, falling right into the waiting arms of Braxton.
H
e grinned down at her cheekily. “This is getting to be a habit.”

This was unlike any other Christmas story I have read, it was truly unique! Carrie Murray and Braxton Timothy were filming a movie that screamed Hallmark Christmas movie. And we not only alternated between Carrie and Braxton, but also between their real lives and the scenes they filmed in the movie too. The scenes they were filming were heartwarming, delightful and the perfect amount of cheesiness! But while they were filming, it was hard to keep their real lives from bleeding into their characters’ lives and vice versa. There was heat between them and quite possibly more!

While the crew worked around them, neither Brax nor Carrie moved away from the front of the tree. Carrie felt him lean into her ear and held her breath, wondering what he was about to say. “That was one of the best Christmas memories I’ve ever made.”
“That wasn’t real, Brax,” Carrie answered with her gaze fixed on the tree lights.
“It felt real to me,” he promised, his breath warm on her cheek.

But Carrie and Braxton in real life? They were sexier and way more heart broken and jaded then their Hallmark counterparts. While they were attracted to one another, Braxton had a playboy past and Carrie was the queen at keeping those around her at arms lengths away. As the story unfolded, we get to see that they were both haunted by their tragic pasts. And both of their pasts were extremely heavy, very dark and intense on the heart. So I kept hoping they could help one another heal, they both needed that. With some light hearted humor, some sexier moments, and heart wrenching back stories, this book thankfully sailed us into a happily ever after!

“CUT!” Simpson yelled, whipping the earphones off his head . “What the hell, Brax? This movie is for The Christmas Channel! You can’t kiss her until the very end!”
Brax finally tore his gaze from Carrie’s to address the director. “What happens if I don’t wait?”

A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls was a fun Christmas tale! But unfortunately for me, I was never able to connect to either of the characters. For me to love and enjoy a story with my whole heart, I desperately need that connection. And I wasn’t able to find that click with either Carrie or Braxton. So if you pick this one up, fingers crossed you click and I can’t wait to hear all of your thoughts and your emotions while reading this story!

Synopsis:

Jax will do anything to save her twin . . . even team up with a teenage alien left behind by the same ship that took her brother.

She agrees to help the alien get back home, and in return, he agrees to sneak her into the alien city to find her sibling.

Too bad it's not that simple.

Worse, the connection forming between them has unknown consequences.

The humans and the aliens are both hiding deadly secrets and the forbidden bond linking the two teens threatens to reveal everything. What started as an uneasy alliance and a seemingly straightforward rescue mission could spark an inter-species war.

The Broken Skies series is a completed series filled with action, adventure, aliens, and romance. Perfect for fans of the Lux series, Under Different Stars, and The Fifth Wave.

Review:

Broken Skies gripped me to the core and was truly outstanding. The story continually built and became more intricate, causing me to become obsessed with this book. It’s all I can think about. Seriously. The pages were scattered with hardships and butterfly inducing moments that were breathtaking. I never wanted this book to end.

“It’s going to be okay,” he says.
But I know it’s not. I don’t know if anything is ever going to be okay again.

After the war left 10% of the population alive, the aliens, known as the E’rikon, arrived to share Earth. They kept to themselves, until a group of them kidnapped Jax’s brother, Jace. In the commotion, a teenage E’rikon was left behind with no way to navigate home. In a desperate attempt to get her brother back, Jax agreed to help navigate Lir to his city in exchange for getting inside to find her brother. What started out as a simple journey, escalated into something that kept me on the edge of my seat!

The fingers of one hand curl into claws, perfect for ripping and tearing. I won’t go quietly. Icy fear has no place in my body now. Instead, I’m filled with fire, burning me from the inside out and just waiting to be released.

I already knew I loved Jax the first few pages into Broken Skies. She was resourceful, savvy and I loved that she was the one responsible for taking care of them for their journey. Whenever she opened her mouth and fumbled over some words or would start blabbering, she made me laugh, smile and truly care for her. But at the same point, she was somewhat broken. She had hardships from her past that she struggled with, and I desperately wanted her to overcome them.

“You are everything I was taught humans were not.”

Lir was charming, sarcastic and I fell head over heals in love with him. He was gentle, sweet, sincere, sexy and smart. I honestly could not get enough of him! And of course I still felt that way about him, even after he kept secrets from Jax. Although, they were wonderful secrets that added so much depth. Ohhhhh, Lir was everything I love in a male character.

Lir stands and reaches a hand out to me. I eye it for a moment before accepting it and allowing him to pull me to my feet. Trust has to start somewhere, I guess.

Jax and Lir were unforgettable characters. And when they were together, their relationship was sweet, slow and natural. Nothing was rushed. Nothing was forced. It was so much fun to watch them evolve. Sigh, I am still on a book high. This book was so much fun and I’m dying until I can read the second book. But until then, I can’t recommend this book highly enough. You must discover this world, characters and story! I look forward to reading the rest of Theresa Kay’s books, because her storytelling has enraptured me!
