“I would have done whatever it took to save you.” His voice and his expression were grave. “Even if that meant I had to spend an eternity in Hell.”

After an amazing first installment, I don’t think anything could have truly exceeded my expectations. I started this second book with high hopes and an excitement for the blossoming relationship between Dante and Beatrice Gabriel and Julia and was left feeling a little underwhelmed by the relationship content in the middle of the story.

I love angst-I do. But when unnecessary and over-the-top things happen, I begin to feel a little more than just frustrated. I love G & J, and I love the way they interact. The love they share is beyond beautiful and beyond words. More than once I have found myself fantasizing
‘What if Gabriel was real???’
and wondering what kind of life I would have if that were possible. So when I felt the repercussions of their previous actions in GR, I was more than sad and a little depressed.

“Your love makes me beautiful.”
“Then let me love you forever.”

“We can’t change our pasts. All we can change is the future.”

I think there is a lot to be said about a series that is so beautifully written. Very rarely do I just stop and evaluate a story for it’s writing. It’s so unheard of for me to hear endearments such
^^^^^(I don’t know why this is separating my text?)as ‘Darling’, ‘Sweetie’, ‘Sweetheart’ and not cringe because of the implied corniness. This couple has something special, and the way they express their love for one another just works. It isn’t forced and it isn’t out of character, it’s just admirable and it’s who they are. They never once try to be anything different than they are, and I think that’s what draws me in the most.

“Every night when I fall asleep with her in my arms, I thank God she’s mine. Every morning when I wake up, my first thought is that I’m grateful she married me. I will never be worthy of her. But I spend every day trying my damnedest. You were her friend when she needed one. But listen to me when I tell you, Paul, you do not want to push me.”

Gabriel and Julia finally have everything they ever wanted-each other. There are no more barriers and no more fronts, it’s just them in marital bliss…but with every new marriage, problems arise and threaten to put a gap between newlyweds and their firm beliefs, and G & J are no exception.

What I love most about the GI series is the witty humor laced into the story and the way they interact with one another as a couple. In this installment, they are completely open, trusting, and forthcoming with each other. There’s an assuredness that was absent in the previous two books-in this one, there was no hesitation when asked to open up or express their doubts. At worst, the phrase ‘Trust me’ would be thrust into the conversation, and the other just did. They trust one another wholeheartedly, and it felt real. The whole story felt extremely natural and like a [intelligent] married couple’s life would progress. It flowed with amazing grace and was easy to fall into-I never felt the unbelievability I often feel with fiction.

…He released her from his arms, smiling shyly. “I like your socks.”
She looked down at her feet and flexed them.
“Argyle is sexy.”
“Indeed. A friend once told me that argyle is the fabric of seduction.”

I know I’ve mentioned it multiple times with my prior two reviews, but Gabriel always steals the show. The vigor with which he protects Julia is breathtaking and so sweet. No one can so much as lift a finger in her direction without him jumping to defend her. He would protect her from anything, from the world if he had to, even if it meant he had to go to Hell to do so, and I fell even more in love with him in this final installment. The depth of his emotions and aspirations for their marriage had me tearing up and wishing he’d get everything he hoped for, even at the expense of their earlier hopes and dreams.

The fact that Gabriel wished for the things he did in this one shows how he truly has come full circle and his loyalty shows no bounds. The support of their family and those around them had my heart swelling and wishing them all the best-even Professor Picton joined ranks among my favorite characters. And ultimately, I was hoping for the highest redemption for the lowest of the low in this final book, which is almost unheard of for me. So for those who haven’t read this series, I will plead with you one last time-pick it up. If nothing else, you’ll meet a mercurial professor who is as sweet as he is tough, who will have you laughing to yourself at his overindulgent, hoity-toity, holier-than-thou tendancies.

Synopsis:

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life-form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can't deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren't a complication she wants, she can't stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she's drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can't stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Review:

To be honest? The first time I read Obsidian, I only liked it. I struggled with understanding Daemon’s douche-baggery ways and his hot and cold feelings towards Katy only frustrated the ever loving daylights out of me. I put the series aside (shocker, I know!), and then one day I ended up seeing this book on sale. I thought I’d give the series another shot and boy am I SO thankful I did! THIS is the book that sucked me back into this amazing series! THIS is the book that allowed me to gain so much insight and understanding into Daemon’s plight. After finishing Shadows, I desperately had to read the whole series! Lux ultimately became my favorite series ever, Daemon is THE BBF that I compare all others too, and JLA is now my favorite author!

This…this was intense. More so than the first time she kissed a boy. The kicker was they weren’t even touching. She didn’t even know him.

This book is so much more than a novella introducing you to the characters and setting the scene for Obsidian. You become swept away in the love story of Dawson and Bethany. Bethany is a girl who has been forced to leave behind her friends and start anew, all in the of family. Dawson is an alien who is trapped in every sense that is possible. Being monitored by the DOD, being told who to mate by their Elder’s, having to hide who they are from the public and always knowing that if they become too attached to a human that the DOD will make the human disappear. Dawson is frustrated at the unfairness that is his and his siblings life. So what is Dawson to do when he can’t help but become infatuated with this human girl? Their love story had me constantly grinning and of course I fell head over heels in love with Dawson. You also come to learn about Dawson’s sibling, Dee and Daemon, who are both in their own right addicting!

She. Spoke. To. Him. First. It was like winning the lottery, getting laid, and climbing the highest cliff all rolled into one. But he needed to play it cool, because he was trending into lame-o land at a quick pace.

Of course I loved this book. I became so intimately attached to the characters and their world in West Virginia. I spent a good portion of Shadows smiling and then that ending? That ending ruined me. I bawled my eyes out, and then the moment they were dry I started Obsidian. This is a brilliantly executed novella, and I will definitely be recommending it to all of my friends who haven’t read the Lux series yet!

To believe in redemption, or assume it is lost? Becoming adults amid the turmoil, Todd and Viola question all they have known, racing through horror and outrage toward a shocking finale. Includes “Snowscape,” a short story by Patrick Ness.

Review:

Read with Chelsea (shut up, shut up, shut up!) 😉

Yet again, Patrick Ness has my emotions all over the map. I loved the characters and the way the story moved at such a fast pace. I loved the alternating voices telling the story and how your view of what is truly evil can change in the blink of an eye. But again, I struggled with parts of this book. All of the doom and gloom, endless war and suffering made my heart hurt. I ached for those struggling and in pain, and it seemed as though we never got a break from that. And then that ending? I was definitely left wanting more, A LOT more. I’m all for imagining what happens after you close the book but with that ending, there were too many what ifs. I wanted something more concrete and solid. But all in all, I enjoyed this series. It was a little outside of my comfort zone, but I will definitely be thinking about this series for a long, long time.

Yes, I think. Here it comes. The end of everything. The end of it all. – Todd

War is coming! The battle cries and bombs can be heard. It is only a matter of moments before it will arrive on their doorsteps and change their lives forever. Therefore Todd makes the split decision to untie Mayor Prentiss (sorry, but he’ll always be the mayor to me). Whether that was a smart decision or the worst idea on the face of the planet, only time will tell. They are now off to protect their town. With the mayor and Todd fighting side by side against the new threat, Viola racing off to be the first one to get to the pilot ship and Lee trying to reach The Resistance, everyone’s fate is in the air. No one is safe in war, especially when you are smack dab in the middle of it.

He’s never going to be the same again, never ever, which makes my throat choke and my chest hurt. This is what war does. Right here, in my hands. This is war. – Viola

Shockingly, I loved Todd throughout this whole book. I agreed with the majority of his decisions except View Spoiler » . Plus he tries his hardest to redeem himself and not let past events happen again. While I don’t believe anything can be done to make up for his past actions, I did admire his current actions and it made me love him that much more. I was so happy because I saw a Todd I thoroughly respected. And he finally became the person I always knew he could be!

If it would save Todd, it wouldn’t have mattered, I was going to do it – I would have killed hundreds, thousands to save him. I would have started an even bigger war for Todd. – Viola

Again, I loved Viola. Her strength, morals and decisions are all admirable. Her actions, which are sometimes with fault, are understandable and so real. When you are doing things in the name of love during war, are they really right or wrong? Black and white lines can become a blur and your moral compass can definitely change, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. And the third voice thrown in the mix? I LOVED it! The understanding and insight was remarkable, and I’m so glad it was there.

Feeling the thrill of it – Cuz that’s it– That’s the nasty, nasty secret of war- When yer winning- When yer winning, it’s ruddy thrilling – Todd

This was a great series. The action was intense, the characters were interesting, I loved how the story flowed and the fact that I could never guess what was going to happen next was wonderful. But I was deeply disturbed by some events that happened and I struggled to stay afloat in the doom and gloom of war. And even after reading Snowscape I was still left wanting more of a solid ending. I had so many unanswered questions and that will always bug me. So if you aren’t as sensitive as me and don’t need an iron clad ending like I do then you’ll love this series! Just be prepared for a whole lot of crazi-ness. 😉

Review:

Read with Chelsea 🙂 Thank you for dealing with my billions of “what the what?!” hysterical texts. ♥ (shut up)

It was an astounding page turner, but my thoughts are all over the map after reading this book. I loved it, I hated it, I was overjoyed, and then I was cast downwards into a deep depression. The storyline was so intense and sometimes it went so dark that I found myself struggling to stay afloat. And just when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, something astronomical happens. It’s as if I’m freefalling into oblivion and there’s no stopping my panicking and pain and then the next thing I know I’m being whipped upwards towards safety and it’s like I am sailing ecstatically through the clouds. Never before have my emotions towards a book or its characters been so chaotic. Even though I did emotionally struggle with parts of this book I HAVE to continue this series. When any book can toy with your emotions and feelings towards a storyline and characters so much, there is something HUGE there. And you have to continue on, even if you know your heart may get broken again and again.

I know this is the end, the end of all things, I can never escape from here and he’ll kill me and kill her and there’s no chance, no life, no hope, nothing.

After that insane cliff hanger in TKONLG, we are still struggling to figure out what’s going to happen to Todd and Voila. How can a moment that was supposed to be so happy and monumental turn into a life sentence of doom and possible death? My mind was reeling from that. Todd and Viola are forcefully separated and neither knows if the other is really alive. The others well-being and life is being dangled in each of their faces. They are each told that as long as they comply with what they are told to do, then the other will stay alive. They are trapped, and they are left with no choice. Because each will do anything, and I do mean anything, to make sure the other one will stay alive. And so the path of deceit, tarnishing your soul, strength and bravery begins.

I’m still the same ol’ stupid effing Todd Hewitt, powerless to do anything, powerless to save myself much less her.

I struggled with Todd in TKONLG and I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t struggle with him in this book. He is SUCH a redeemable person but it pained me to watch his soul turn so black in this book. His actions and lack of actions broke my heart again and again. His choices or lack of choices, depending upon how you see it, was devastating. He is on such a hard journey and I kept hoping against hope that he would be given the chance to redeem himself. Because when Viola is in the picture, he is an amazing man. An absolutely amazing man that takes your breath away. His love towards her is so intense and so innocent that you can’t help but instantly fall in love with him. And I honestly didn’t know if I would ever see that Todd again.

We all fall but that’s not what matters. What matters is picking yourself up again.

I love Viola. She is strong, resilient, smart and her love for Todd is remarkable. I agreed with her choices and values and she is definitely a force to be reckoned with! I loved getting to read part of the book from her point of view. It was fascinating being in her head and following her on her journey and meeting all the new characters she was introduced to. All in all? I really liked this book! The action was intense, the characters were truly unique, my love towards some characters turned sour and others whom I never once saw as redeemable I truly started to like and care for. But some parts seriously disturbed me and even reminded me of past historical events that are truly horrifying. I didn’t realize how dark this book could go. But even with all of my problems with the book, I’m still continuing onward. And I’ll still be recommending this to my friends that I know can handle the storyline and the issues that bothered me. Now onto the final leg of the journey, and here’s hoping my Kindle doesn’t get thrown across the room again like in TKONLG. 🙂
