Synopsis:

After a decade apart, childhood sweethearts reconnect by chance in New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren’s touching, romantic novel Love and Other Words…how many words will it take for them to figure out where it all went wrong?

The story of the heart can never be unwritten.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

Review:

It never occurred to me that love could be anything other than all- consuming.

There are some stories that capture your heart so easily, that they’re impossible not to devour.  Stories that feel like they own a piece of your soul.  Love and Other Words is that book for me.  I don’t know if it’s because the flashbacks were set where I grew up and spent decades there.  Or because the characters became so real to me that I felt as though they were my best friends.  Or maybe because a lot of it resonated to different moments when I was a younger. I don’t know. But I do know that Love and Other Words will be one of my favorite books ever.

“You loved me, too, you know,” he says quietly. “It was everything.”

Macy Sorensen was a pediatrics resident in the bay area and she seemed to have her life together.  She lived with an older man who had a daughter, whom she was engaged to, and she loved her job.  She had her best friend Sabrina, and she was always there when she needed a friend.  Yet her whole life blew up the moment she ran into Elliot Petropoulos again.  He was her childhood best friend, first love and her everything.  Elliot’s reappearance poked holes in Macy’s carefully curated life.  What she thought she was happy with, was completely turned on it’s head.  This story was told in alternating timelines between the past and the present, and it was done seamlessly.  I was never ready to leave either of those times.

“You make me feel so many things,” I admit in a hush.

I loved jumping 15 years into the past!  The flashbacks were set in the small town I grew up in, Healdsburg, California.  Readers will fall in love with the setting and it all made me homesick. The vineyards, the Russian River, our little library, Westside Road, Goat Rock, SRJC, the new skate park, Armstrong Woods, Madrona Manor, and even Rosewood Dr (I have a hilarious story that happened on that street!), there were so many beautiful and memorable settings.

“Is there anything I can do?” he asked quietly.
A weight settled heavily in my chest. “Not unless you can bring my mom back.”
Silence pulsed around us and I heard him inhaling in preparation a few times before speaking. Finally, he settled on a simple “I wish I could.”

The way Macy and Elliot met was beyond adorable.  And once they got past the weariness, they were instant friends!  It was enchanting how their friendship evolved around books, and how they shared their love of reading and words.  Those shared interests led them to form a beautiful bond. It allowed them to pour their whole heart and souls to each other. Like when Elliot got Macy to talk about losing her mom, it tore my heart right open. Their friendship was pure and sweet and everything good in the world.  And even though they both lived such separate lives, when they came together on the weekends or over the summer it was effortless.  As we watched the years go by, and they started to fall in love, it was breathtaking to watch.

“Do you think about me?” I asked. Now that he’d raised it, the question gnawed at me.
“Sometimes it feels like I think about you every minute,” he whispered.
A bubble of emotion wedged tightly beneath my ribs, hitting a tender spot. I watched our clasped hands for a long time before he spoke again.

In the present, Macy was not prepared to face her past.  So I was shocked that when she saw Elliot again for the first time, she ran away from him.  She showed us time and again that she was the queen of deflection and denial. So I was so happy when she agreed to meet up with him.  Elliot was still honest as ever and it was jarring to see how much Macy had changed as we further dived into their story. But again, I loved their moments together. I loved how easy it was for them to reconnect and become friends. I loved feeling the chemistry building all over again. Their moments together were like sunshine breaking through a cloudy day. So when Elliot started to put cracks in Macy’s current relationship, or make her question her life, it was impossible not to shout for joy. I wanted Macy to acknowledge that Elliot was her forever. That they were always destined to be. Yet that wasn’t as easy as it would seem.

“Give me a chance,” he’d said.
I’d promised I would. The question was whether he’d still want one, once he heard what I had to say.

I have to say that Elliot was everything!  I loved how open and honest he was.  I loved that he told her in the present that he was hoping to see her someday.  And that he even called her the love of his life.  Elliot put it all out there.  So I didn’t understand the hesitancy from Macy. I knew there was a world of hurt, but even as the story unfolded I still didn’t grasp it all. So when we got to see the whole picture, I got it. Why she was so reserved. Why she was in the type of adult relationship she was in. Why she wanted to just feel nothing. And my heart shattered for her. And for me, this was a personal trigger. Because of my past and that same setting, I cried for days after I finished this book since it brought up two old memories. Yet I can’t wait to read this story all over again. I loved watching Macy and Elliot become friends in the past and the present. I loved watching how they slowly fell in love both times. And that ending, it was perfect.

“I’ve loved you my whole life,” Elliot continues, his lips moving against my collarbone. Slowly, I open my eyes, and he looks up at me. “At least from the minute I ever thought about love, and sex, and women.”

There were also so many other things to love in this book besides Elliot and Macy together. I loved Macy’s relationship with her dad. I loved the notes that her mom had left behind so she could give advice as she grew. I adored Elliot’s family. His mom made me cry, when she helped out Macy and her dad. And his brothers made me laugh when they could be punks. This story felt so unique with young adult and adult romance weaved together. So if you’re looking for young adult first love and a beautiful second chance adult romance, make sure you have this one on your tbr!

“Favorite word?” he whispers.
I don’t even hesitate: “You.”

Synopsis:

Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion...she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas.

Olive braces herself for wedding hell, determined to put on a brave face, but when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. Suddenly there’s a free honeymoon up for grabs, and Olive will be damned if Ethan gets to enjoy paradise solo.

Agreeing to a temporary truce, the pair head for Maui. After all, ten days of bliss is worth having to assume the role of loving newlyweds, right? But the weird thing is...Olive doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, the more she pretends to be the luckiest woman alive, the more it feels like she might be.

Review:

The Unhoneymooners was a fun enemy to lovers that was so easy to binge.  It was laugh worthy, smile worthy and the majority of the story took place in a beautiful tropical destination.  This book would make the perfect beach read!

Ethan slides his gaze to me, clearly unconvinced. “I’m not going to kiss you again, just in case that’s what you were thinking this would lead to.”
Whowhatnow? The jackass. Gaping at him, I whisper-hiss, “I would honestly rather lick the bottom of my shoe than have your mouth on mine again.”

Olive constantly believed she had bad luck.  Yet all of that changed on her twin’s wedding day.  Olive and her nemesis, who was her future brother-in-law’s brother, were the only ones who weren’t violently ill from the wedding buffet.  With an all-expense paid vacation to Maui, Ethan and Olive found themselves jetting off on their sibling’s honeymoon.  Together.

“Look.” I nod to the horizon. “We aren’t lost at sea.”
He lets out a quiet “Wow.” And there, for a single breath, we give in to a really lovely moment of enjoying something together. Until Ethan decides to ruin it: “I hope you don’t drown out there.”
I smile down at him. “If I do, the husband is always a suspect.”

I have to talk about Ethan, because I was obsessed with him! Yes even Olive could acknowledge he was gorgeous.  But there had always been this hate vibe going on between the two of them.  It started from the first moment they met.  Yet from the moment he pretended they were married on their vacation and kissed her forehead…. swoon.  So when extenuating circumstances led them to continue the charade, I loved every minute of it.  Pretending that they didn’t hate each other?!  Yes please!  Olive herself couldn’t even stop from swooning when Ethan turned on the charm.   And in those moments, my heart was so happy when they would click at times. Especially since we would get to see how well he paid attention to her.  But behind closed doors….ohhhh their bickering was addictive!  They could be so hilarious without even trying!

“I can hear you thinking about that one word and reading more into it than I intended. You look great.” Once inside, he presses the button for the lobby and adds, “You always do.”
These three final words bound around my cranium before they absorb. I always look great? To who?  Ethan?

I loved watching Olive go from hating Ethan to second guessing him, when they got along. Their relationship progressed in a way that left the reader more than invested and having to know what happened next. We got this story in just Olive’s voice and I loved watching her change from the beginning of the story to the end. She always seemed to think the worst of everything and I loved how distance from her life, the vacation and even Ethan allowed her to grow and made me so proud of her! Olive had a lot of obstacles on her way to happiness, but I loved how she became her biggest champion and her large family always had her back every step of the way.

Squinting, he says, “You’re a real seductress.”
“I hear that a lot.”
He coughs, and I swear I see Ethan Thomas battling a genuine smile.
And I  get it. As much as I hate him… I think I’m starting to like us.

With paintball fights, sexy massages, boat trips, and the beautiful scenery, The Unhoneymooners was a blast and absolutely hilarious!  Between their charade, banter and deals made, I constantly found myself laughing every few pages.  It was a book that will put a smile on your face, while also having deeper, emotional moments too.  But the emotional side of it, ugh it wrecked me.  So while this was easily five stars for the majority of the book, I struggled deeply with the conflict. It’s a personal preference and I have an extremely hard time when it happens within books. So hence the four star rating.  But I loved the ending! With a grand gesture and an epilogue that gave us a look into the future, this book ended wonderfully.

Ethan and I are starting to build more of these good moments than bad;  it sends the balance swinging into an unfamiliar direction.
And I think I really like it.
Which makes me incredibly uneasy.
“I still hate you,” I  tell him, pushing a dark curl of hair off his forehead.
He nods. “I  know you do.”

Synopsis:

Single mom Jess Davis is a data and statistics wizard, but no amount of number crunching can convince her to step back into the dating world. After all, her father was never around, her hard-partying mother disappeared when she was six, and her ex decided he wasn’t “father material” before her daughter was even born. Jess holds her loved ones close but working constantly to stay afloat is hard...and lonely.

But then Jess hears about GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company that’s predicted to change dating forever. Finding a soulmate through DNA? The reliability of numbers: This Jess understands.

At least she thought she did, until her test shows an unheard-of 98 percent compatibility with another subject in the database: GeneticAlly’s founder, Dr. River Peña. This is one number she can’t wrap her head around, because she already knows Dr. Peña. The stuck-up, stubborn man is without a doubt not her soulmate. But GeneticAlly has a proposition: Get ‘to know him and we’ll pay you. Jess—who is barely making ends meet—is in no position to turn it down, despite her skepticism about the project and her dislike for River. As the pair are dragged from one event to the next as the “Diamond” pairing that could launch GeneticAlly’s valuation sky-high, Jess begins to realize that there might be more to the scientist—and the science behind a soulmate—than she thought.

Review:

The Soulmate Equation is a book that romance readers should not miss!  If you love moments that give you butterflies, characters that feel like your friends and a story that plays out like a movie, then definitely add this one to your tbr!  This story swept me away and easily landed on my favorites list!

He reached up, running a hand through his hair. “Biological compatibility is independent of whether or not we like each other.”
A horrified laugh ripped out of her. “Is that the company slogan or your best pickup line?”

I loved Jess Davis right away.  She was a single mom who was barely struggling to stay afloat.  Thankfully her life was filled with caring grandparents, an inquisitive and sweet daughter and a romance writing bestie that was like a sister to her.  After submitting her test on a whim, to a dating company called GeneticAlly that matched people through their DNA, Jess found herself in uncharted waters.

Do you actually believe our result could be real? That we could be soulmates? she wanted to ask, but the words felt too enormous to push past her lips.

Jess’s results came back with an unheard 98% match with the founder Dr. River Peña.  River was a guy she saw in passing at the local coffee shop.  He was handsome but he definitely gave off cold vibes.  There was no way they could be that compatible!  But when GeneticAlly made Jess a monetary proposition she couldn’t afford to pass, she pushed her pride aside and started spending more time with River.

Fizzy’s voice glimmered with wonder: “What did you do to him?”
“We did not—”
“He’s smil—”
“I know,” Jess snapped. “It’s weird. Shut up.”
She did not shut up: “When you two actually—”
Leaning in, Jess hissed: “Shhh!”

While Jess had a huge heart, was responsible, focused and logical, River was such an unknown.  He came across as such a cold asshole, albeit a smart one since he was the founder and top scientist at GeneticAlly.  So those that love guys who have a gruff, brooding exterior, you’re going to fall hard for River!  He was dark, mysterious and when he showed that he could have a conversation lol and that there was a heart in there, I was obsessed!

“I’d suspect most people comment on your eyes,” he said quietly, running a fingertip across her collarbone. “That startling, bright blue.”
Surely he could feel her heart scaling her windpipe. He didn’t seem to remember there was anyone else in the room.
“But I prefer your mouth.”
“You do?” Jess managed.
“I do,” he said, and bent, kissing her forehead. “You don’t give those smiles away for free.”

Jess and River had a connection and chemistry that came so easily.  Sparks flared when they were just talking to even when they were at public events for his company *fans face*.  Their build up was deliciously seductive and their interactions were smile and laugh inducing.  The steamy scenes weren’t overly descriptive, but still a lot of fun.  But in the back of Jess’ mind she knew that River had a lot of money to make if their relationship bloomed and that she had a daughter to think about and protect.

Unraveled and bare, Jess knew in her bones that he was her ninety-eight.
“I wanted to see you.”

Jess is easily one of my favorite heroines and River is definitely being added to my book boyfriend list!  And I have to say, I’m not one for books with kids, which is funny since I have two of my own that I love lol.  But Juno, Jess’s daughter, was one of my favorite side characters ever.  Watching her and River interact, OH MY HEART!  I fell for him even harder.

“I want to be here to bring you coffee. I want to take you out to dinner and order the same food and hear you recite the odds that we would have met. I want to hate-attend fancy social events together.” Jess laughed, a surprised burst of sound, and his tone softened. “I want you to call me for help—without an apology already on the tip of your tongue. I want to feel like I can kiss you again by your car at the end of the night.” He swallowed. “I want you in my bed.”

The Soulmate Equation captured my heart so easily!  With characters that shined so brightly and a story-line that was a ton of fun, I’ve already read this book twice so far.  Seriously lol.  I wanted to go through the laughter, sighing, heartfelt moments and tears all over again and it was just as fabulous the second time around!

“You have to admit you don’t look at Dr. River Peña and think, ‘Now, there’s a romantic soul.’ ”
“No,” Fizz conceded, “but I do look at him and think, ‘I bet he’s got a fantastic penis.’ Did you see the size of his hands? He could carry me by the head, like a basketball.”
A throat cleared, and they looked up to find River Peña standing not two feet away. “Well, you two sure didn’t waste any time.”
Jess’s stomach fell through the floor, and the words creaked out of her: “Oh shit.”
“Did you hear what I just said?” Fizzy asked.
He let out a slow, controlled exhale. He’d totally heard. “Hear what?” he managed, finally.
Fizzy stood, pulling Jess up with her. “Excellent.” She gave River a dainty curtsy. “Take us away.”

PS I loved Jess’ bestie Fizzy!  She was absolutely hilarious and had such a way with words.  I loved how she was such a good friend and supported and cheered Jess on.  And the fact that she wrote down things, to use in her stories, that played out between Jess and River had me laughing so hard!

Synopsis:

One Christmas wish, two brothers, and a lifetime of hope are on the line for hapless Maelyn Jones in In a Holidaze, the quintessential holiday romantic novel by Christina Lauren, the New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Jam-packed with yuletide cheer, an unforgettable cast of characters, and Christina Lauren’s trademark “downright hilarious” (Helen Hoang, author of The Bride Test) hijinks, this swoon-worthy romantic read will make you believe in the power of wishes and the magic of the holidays.

Review:

In a Holidaze was brimming with Christmas cheer, family, laughter and love!  From that first chapter I felt like I was watching a movie.  It all played out so vividly in my head.  So I couldn’t help but gasp, laugh out loud and fall madly in love with this book.  If you’re looking for a fun Christmas story that has romance in the pages, then definitely add this one to your tbr!

What am I doing with my life? Please. I want…
I’m not even sure how to finish the sentence. I want to be happy, and I’m petrified that the path I’m on now is going to leave me bored and alone.
So I ask the universe, simply: Can you show me what will make me happy?

Every single Christmas, Mae’s family got together with her parent’s college best friends and their families.  They celebrated the holidays together in the mountains and were so close knit.  They loved each other deeply and had so many rituals and activities that they looked forward to each year.  Except this year…..Mae messed up big time. And with it looking like this would be their last time together, Mae’s heart was bleeding.  But then, her whole life got turned upside down and inside out.  With a touch of magic, that reminded me of Groundhogs Day, I had absolutely no clue what was going to happen next!

The display says that today is December 20. But this morning was December 26.
“Wow.” I lean back, looking around. Panic presses in at the edges of my vision, turning the world black and fuzzy.
Breathe, Mae.

I loved Maelyn Jones, aka Mae, right away.  She was resilient, caring, and followed her heart.  It was so easy to feel everything right along with her.  So when life got crazy, I more than understood why she lost it.  Seriously, what in the world was going on?!  How many times would she have to repeat certain moments?  And while I felt her anguish and suffering, I couldn’t help but laugh throughout this whole ordeal.  They were so many hilarious moments!

I want to capture this moment. I want to put it in a snow globe and be able to see it just like this, forever.

The romance in this story was slow and addictive.  And I found myself falling in love right along with them.  Well technically Mae already had loved Andrew forever, but you’ll see what I mean.  Andrew had been friends with Mae practically his whole life.  He always saw her as a friend, but with magic or was it fate intervening, I kept my fingers crossed he’d start to see her in another light.  You guys, Andrew was most definitely book boyfriend material!  He was sexy, patient, thoughtful, sweet and kind.  And I loved how he always paid attention to Mae.

His eyes sparkle, and sensation zips up my spine. I swear he’s never looked at me like this, like he’s seeing me for the first time.

With sledding, picking out a Christmas tree, making snow critters, mistletoe and more, I loved all of the Christmas festivities in the pages!   It added to the fun of how the story played out and I kept finding myself smiling and laughing out loud.  On top of Mae and Andrew, we had their families, another family and then Benny.  I loved, loved, loved Benny!  He was their parent’s best friend who gave me this Cheech and Chong mixed with Mr Rogers persona lol!  Bennie warmed my heart and made me feel like Mae was safe. He was someone she could trust and confide in during these crazy times thank goodness.

His breath comes out warm against my neck, voice shaking: “It never occurred to me that you might be mine.”

It was so easy to fall in love with these characters and their story!  And it ended with an epilogue that had all of my hopes and dreams swirled together. Seriously.  It was that fabulous!  So if you’re looking for a Christmas story, or a romance that will make you smile, laugh and fall in love then definitely pick this one up!  I’m so glad I did!

Going still, he breathes in uneven bursts against my neck. “I’ve loved you my whole life, but this new thing…” He sucks in a deep breath. “It’s amazing and scary.”

PS I actually went into this book with NO knowledge at all, besides my co-blogger Arielle saying it was a must read. The hold at my library was 13 weeks out and I was number 17 on the wait list lol. I was emotionally not in a great place at all, so when I got a notice that Chelsea, my other co-blogger, gifted me this book, I cried all the happy tears and started it right away! *All the Christmas hugs Chelsea‘s way, I love you!*

Synopsis:

From the New York Times bestselling author behind the “joyful, warm, touching” (Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author) The Unhoneymooners comes a delightfully charming love story about what happens when two assistants tasked with keeping a rocky relationship from explosion start to feel sparks of their own.

Carey Douglas has worked for home remodeling and design gurus Melissa and Rusty Tripp for nearly a decade. A country girl at heart, Carey started in their first store at sixteen, and—more than anyone would suspect—has helped them build an empire. With a new show and a book about to launch, the Tripps are on the verge of superstardom. There’s only one problem: America’s favorite couple can’t stand each other.

James McCann, MIT graduate and engineering genius, was originally hired as a structural engineer, but the job isn’t all he thought it’d be. The last straw? Both he and Carey must go on book tour with the Tripps and keep the wheels from falling off the proverbial bus.

Unfortunately, neither of them is in any position to quit. Carey needs health insurance, and James has been promised the role of a lifetime if he can just keep the couple on track for a few more weeks. While road-tripping with the Tripps up the West Coast, Carey and James vow to work together to keep their bosses’ secrets hidden, and their own jobs secure. But if they stop playing along—and start playing for keeps—they may have the chance to build something beautiful together…

From the “hilariously zany and heartfelt” (Booklist) Christina Lauren comes a romantic comedy that proves if it’s broke, you might as well fix it.

Review

So.

This was a solid romance with a solid story line and solid characters. That being said, I didn’t LOVE it. I am SO bummed out to be saying that and it’s another reason why I wanted to put this review off until later. The last few Christina Lauren books have not left me obsessed and it breaks my heart. I feel like their actual writing is so solid and still has me laughing and shivering with all the ~feels~ so often but there’s just something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on.

This book is about Carey, who at first is seemingly just an assistant to the HGTV-esque couple, Melissa and Rusty Tripp. Think Chip and Joanna Gaines but with a super fucked up and toxic relationship that is hidden from the general public. Carey is Melissa’s go-to for everything while our main guy/ grump, James, has become the equivalent to Rusty. Carey and James haven’t interacted a whole lot before now but all of those interactions have been a bit stilted. James thinks he’s above it all because he was originally hired under the impression that he’d be in an engineering position so he’s been kind of a know-it-all to Carey.

When certain things come to light RIGHT before the couple is supposed to go on a book tour for their brand new book on their “successful marriage,” Carey and James are forced to come along. As with any group of people who is forced together under shitty situations, the two begin to get to know each other better and commiserate with one another and well….you can really guess where their relationship goes from there.

I think the something that didn’t quite appeal to me was that so much of the book was about how shitty Melissa and Rusty’s relationship was and how abusive their relationship was to Carey. I mean, on one hand, that’s a HUGE part of Carey’s life and why certain parts of her are like they are but…..I guess I would have just like more James and Carey??? I don’t know, I really don’t lol.

One thing I *did* like was seeing Carey’s life with focal dystonia. I had honestly never heard of that before and having books include characters with issues like these just really opens my eyes to how many things different people struggle with on a daily basis that you might not know anything about! With Carey, it impacted something that she loved doing, something that was part of her job. Other than a VERY mild case of anxiety SOMETIMES, I really have no problems to worry about on a daily basis. I definitely take that for granted (as I’m sure a lot of other people do too) so seeing these characters is really important for everyone.

Overall I DID enjoy this and I will always and forever read anything these ladies put out. I know there will be plenty of people that fall madly in love with this book and these characters—especially James’s grumpy ass, lol.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books for allowing me to read an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
