Synopsis:

The second book in the Infinity time travel series is full of action, romance, and an intricately designed roller coaster plot.

One mistake can change everything. Ashlyn Calvert finds that out the hard way when a bad decision leads to the death of her best friend, Noah Anderson.

Only Noah isn’t really gone. Thanks to his parents’ company, the Infinity Division, there is a version of him skipping from one dimension to another, set on revenge for the death of his sister, Kori. When a chance encounter brings him face-to-face with Ash, he’s determined to resist the magnetic pull he’s felt for her time and time again. Because falling for Ash puts his mission in danger.

But there’s more going on in Ash’s alternate universe than either of them knows: a mysterious project called Omega. A conspiracy spanning multiple Earths and revolving around none other than Ash. Its creators would do anything to keep Omega secret…

Anything.

Review:

Omega was action packed, fast paced and so much fun!  And I loved being with these characters again!  They felt like a group of friends that I’d known forever.  But before I even read the first page, I was a little nervous since this story would be told by different characters.  You see, in Infinity we followed Cade and Kori.  And in this story we followed Noah, who was Kori’s brother from another realm, and Cade’s best friend.  Plus we followed and finally met Ash.  Ash was a constant that always seemed to be in Noah’s lives on all of the realms, well except the one he was from.  They had this intense sexual chemistry.  And he thought that that was all they had.  Until he met this realms Ash.  Once I started to watch them interact, I realized that I loved having Omega’s journey told from Noah and Ash!  I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!

His hand grazed my backside and I whirled on him, an even mix of horrified and angry. “Watch it.”
A spark of mischief glinted in his eyes, there and gone in a single beat of my heart before being replaced with steely resignation. “Oh yeah. I got kidnapped and tossed in a mad scientist’s basement just so I could have a shot at touching your ass. Get over yourself and move.”

Since I could talk on and on about this book, here are some of my favorite things about Omega –

✮  A strong chemistry that slowly unfolded into more –

He caught the swing inches from his face, smirking like I’d just whispered all the dirty, dark secrets I had in his ear. “Hit a nerve, did I? Maybe you like rude. Maybe jackass is your kink.”He let go of my fist and leaned a little closer. “Go ahead. Tell me I’m not even the tiniest bit right. Tell me—”
I let out a howl and launched myself at him, but instead of stopping me, this time he allowed me to collide with him, full force. When I pulled away to smack him, he held tight and let out a sound that stirred something white-hot in the pit of my stomach. Secured tight, pressed up against his annoyingly perfect body, I felt him laugh. “See, I’m getting the impression that you like the chainsaw version of me.”
And then he kissed me.

On every other realm that Noah met Ash, they just had a strong chemistry.  He would always hook up with her and move on.  But in this realm, their relationship was different.  Yeah they had chemistry that made them want to touch, kiss and be near one another, but there was more.  And watching them see what that more was all about warmed my heart.  The friendship they built slowly over time felt real.  And the things they ended up doing for one another felt plausible and a natural course of action.  But they both fought what was there every step of the way.  So their moments together made for some explosive scenes!

✮  Uncovering the truth and seeing the bigger picture –

Helping this Noah and his friends might actually be the key to my freedom. – Ash

This time around, while there was some focus on Dylan, there was SO much more going on.  In case you need a refresher, Dylan was Cade’s brother who murdered the Kori from Cade and Noah’s realm.  The focus shifted from hunting Dylan to what was happening with their interdimensional travel.  I can’t say more, but wow!  Talk about insanity, morally wrong, yet so intriguing at the same time.  It left me excited to see how it will affect the third book!

✮  Fascinating world building –

Body-numbing fear bubbled up in my gut and turned my vision watery. But, despite the near paralyzing terror, I picked myself up and ran. – Ash

I loved how each realm they landed on was different.  Whether it was barely noticeable or a stark contrast, I was always intrigued.  And the realm we spent the majority of time on, in Omega, crime controlled the land.  Al Capone was the President and their tier system was horrific.  People’s morals were nonexistent in certain situations and it was truly a nightmare world.  I was fascinated yet horrified as we saw scientists and high profile people harm others without a second thought.  I loved how each realm was so easy to visualize in every aspect!

✮  Interdimension travel and multiple of the same characters that was easy to follow –

“There’s never going to be a time for this,” she said. “Right now? This time ? It’s all we have. It’s all we might ever have…”

While it may sound confusing to talk about, it was all very easy to follow.  We meet or hear about multiple of the same characters, yet they all stood out whole, original and easily discernible from one another!  The same stands for each dimension!  I was never once confused.

✮  I adored the relationships that took place –

We walked a few more feet and I stopped. I didn’t want to venture too far from the motel. “The whole thing is asinine. Why the hell does it even bother me? Why do I care where she ends up?”
Kori smiled , then rose onto her toes and kissed my cheek. “You don’t need me to tell you why. You already know.” – Noah and Kori

While I loved the friendship that Noah and Cade had, and even their interaction with Rabbit (I couldn’t help but like that guy!), I was intrigued to see what would happen between Noah and Kori.  Noah didn’t want to get attached to her, since he saw his realms Kori murdered before his eyes.  He loved his sister and felt that getting close to this other Kori could tarnish what he had.  But he started to notice how different the two Kori’s were.  And how much he had in common with this one.  So it was fun watching Noah struggle with his inner turmoil towards Kori, especially since he had some tender moments with her.

“…..Wait until morning to do anything stupid. Agreed?” I held out my hand to her.
She hesitated, but after a moment, took it and offered a small smile. “Agreed.” – Noah and Ash

I loved the path this story took and I loved that there were some surprise characters that I didn’t see coming. Especially the group of characters at the end of the book!  The next book is going to be so much fun!  I’m happy to say that the ending left me in a perfect holding pattern, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the final book!

PS There’s a scene that involves Noah saying lines…..oh my gosh, I laughed so hard.  It was hilariously awful lol!  And it also melted my heart too.  I loved seeing Noah’s fun, flirty side!

PPS   If you read Infinity a while back, there’s wonderful reminders about what happened sprinkled throughout the beginning of Omega.  It flowed nicely with the story, and as someone who just reread the first book, I didn’t feel bogged down or bored.  This book was just too much fun for that!

Interview:

✮Did you always know that each book would feature a different couple?

It wasn’t until i was halfway through Infinity that I made the decision. I was so taken with Noah and wanted the opportunity to explore his mind. The best way to do it was to make each book focus on one of the original group. I also wanted a chance to dig around in Dylan’s mind. His motivations for why he’s done what he’s done, his love for Ava… I really loved how they all turned out!

✮If you had to cast Noah and Ash, would you prefer them to be known or unknown actors?  Anyone in mind?

Noah has always been Miles McMillan in my mind. And Ash…I think Marie Avgeropoulos would be perfect!

✮What was your favorite scene to write in Omega?

It’s kind of a tie between a scene  involving a conversation between Noah and Kori–and a kangaroo–and a scene with Noah and Ash where they’re trading pick-up lines. Confession: I snarfed coffee writing both of them 😀

✮What is your favorite quality to write in a character?

I’m a sucker for loyalty. I love writing characters that are willing to do anything and everything for those they love.

✮Was there a character in this series you connected with more, or was easier to write than the others?

I can connect with pretty much all of them. When I write, a piece of me, no matter how small, goes into all my characters. But I think if I had to single one out, it would be Kori simply because of what she had to deal with when her mother got sick.

✮The next book, will be the last one in the trilogy.  Can you tell us anything about the final book?

I can’t say much–even though it’s killing me! I will tell you this one was the most fun to write. I love them all, but there’s a ton of new worlds in #3…and…well, you’ll see 😉

BOOK REVIEW: Warcross by Marie Lu (Warcross #1)

BOOK REVIEW: Warcross by Marie Lu (Warcross #1)by Marie Lu
Purchase on: AmazoniBooks
Add to: Goodreads

Synopsis:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu—when a game called Warcross takes the world by storm, one girl hacks her way into its dangerous depths.

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

In this sci-fi thriller, #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu conjures an immersive, exhilarating world where choosing who to trust may be the biggest gamble of all.

Oh man. Marie Lu KILLED it. This was phenomenal, and easily one of my favorite books of 2017.

I don’t even want to say much about the plot (hah if you know me, I normally like to go into books blind anyway). I’ll just say this – Emika is a kick ass heroine struggling to survive in a world where digital reigns. But she does something unexpected, which leads to a domino of events that land her in a crazy cool situation with the maker of Warcross.

Thats it. That’s all you get.

Hah okay but seriously… I am not a huge sci fi/futuristic/dystopian (not sure if this is actually dystopian though) fan. I’m a fantasy reader, point blank period. However, I LOVED Ready Player One, mostly because I played World of Warcraft for years when I was in college (heyo to my gamer friends.) And if you’ve read Ready Player One, you know its the perfect balance between fun references to crazy intense plot line, and it appeals to an audience beyond the themes it references. It was a freaking great story.

The same can be said about this.

Right now, my husband is actually reading my ARC of this and loving it. Like when we read Ready Player One together, he’s constantly nudging me and freaking out because Marie Lu knows her stuff. (Oh my gosh there’s a certain reference to WoW that had me actually screaming.)

But even if you have no gamer knowledge or you’re intimidated by books like this – trust me, don’t pre judge it. The story is damn fun and full of feels. Marie Lu has a way of sucking you into her characters, and her writing is so easy to follow. Not to mention, this is one of the coolest worlds I’ve read about, and Emika is so thoroughly developed in the beginning of the book that you’re instantly drawn to her and rooting for her hardcore.

You guys, I enjoyed EVERY. SINGLE. PAGE. The whole book is so well written and holy crap, I think I jumped out of my bed a few times. Oh man. I wish I could say more, but there are some FUN plot twists. I guessed a few, but oh Marie Lu got me in the end. But try not to go in with expectations. Just get pulled along with the plot and have fun.

AND HOLY CRAP SLDFKJ:SLKFDJ BOOK TWO AHHHH I NEED IT NOWWWW. That set up… ermergershalkdjfal;skdfj.

***

Initial pre-review:

If you like Ready Player one, read this book.
If you didn’t like Ready Player one, read this book.
If you read only fantasy(like me), trust me, take a break from it and read this book.
If you liked this book, read Ready Player one (once the trauma wears down.) And then come off the high of RP1 and read this book.

Basically read this book.

Review:

Infinity haunted my dreams and interrupted my thoughts throughout the day.  I couldn’t stop thinking about this book.  I loved getting swept away by the action, adventure and the unknown.  And when I reached that last page,  I wasn’t ready to stop being in their world.  Even though it ended absolutely perfect and left me so excited for where the next book is headed!  But till then, I went and added every series and standalone this author has written to my to-read list.  This is the first book I’ve read from her, and I can’t wait to read the rest.

Real love, she always said, knew no bounds. It wasn’t hindered by space or time. It couldn’t be weakened by death. Real love started in your heart and went straight through to infinity.

Starting out, I didn’t know much about this book other than the few words in the synopsis.  And after the first two chapters, I wasn’t sure if I was going to connect to Kori Anderson.  Oh, I was so wrong.  Yes she did graffiti, yes she came across as abrasive, but she was so much more than that.  Kori had a beautiful heart, she was selfless, she was a fighter, she could be so confident and strong and then so unsure.  She was completely relatable and I loved being in her head!  We learn early on that her mother passed away, and her father has to travel for work since he’s a General in the Army.  When he’s away, he has people in the military watch over Kori.  This time he sent Cade Granger and Noah Emeal.  And because of these two, her whole world was about to change.

The small bit of distance that existed between us was banished as Cade grabbed my arms and pulled me forward. A second later, his mouth covered mine. His arms wrapped tight, holding on as though I was the only real thing in the world. Like I was the last safe place amidst a raging storm. I’d never felt anything so intense. Purely cosmic and right with the world, while at the same time, wrong.
Very, very wrong.

Cade Granger slowly captured my heart.  I liked him from the moment he showed up on Kori’s doorstep.  But as I watched his patience, hope and determination play out, I found myself being pulled further into him.  Then when light was shone on his past, I was a goner.  Cade was perfectly imperfect, and so were his interactions with Corey.  It always felt as though there was so much emotion packed between them.  Like I was standing there waiting for them to explode from the sexual tension, the unanswered questions, and the two of them constantly being pulled together.  Cade and Kori were emotionally addicting!

I wasn’t some starry-eyed girl. We weren’t in love. This wasn’t going to be a fairy tale ending. But maybe it could have been. Under different circumstances, maybe we could have fallen in love.

There’s a ridiculous amount of things I want to talk about, but I can’t.   So many of my favorite things and even moments are shrouded around some mysteries, and I can’t spoil them for you.  BUT know that my heart was put through the wringer.  I had so much hope for some things, and it felt like I was kicked in the gut time and again.  But it couldn’t be any other way.  And the more I learned, the more I ached thinking about being put in those situations.  In those people’s places.  It was extremely thought provoking, annndddd I want to say more yet again but I can’t.

No. This is not happening…
I clawed at his hand, desperate for air. My nails dug deep, drawing blood —I felt it, warm and slick— but it didn’t make him loosen his hold.
He grinned, as if pleased I was fighting back and, as I kicked out blindly with both legs, he laughed out loud.

I can say a few things about the ‘someone who wants her dead’.  And I may be one of the few who do, because this person was a psychopath.  Yet I was intrigued by what he was going to do next.  My interest in this villain definitely disturbed me, yet he’s such a fascinating character whose death I constantly wished for.

There was only one small hangup I had while I was flipping through the pages, and that was I desperately wanted Case and Noah to have a gun.  It could have been helpful, but *shrugs*.  Besides that little little hiccup, I loved everything!  Especially that ending!  I wanted to laugh, scream and cry all at the same time.  So yes, I definitely recommend this book!  And I hope you fall for these characters and the story-line just as much as I did!

P.S. Can I please beg for a Novella in Cade’s voice?  I would love to hear some of his thoughts as the story progressed and what he thought of certain interactions with others.  That bonus POV got to me and I need more!  My heart aches to hear his thoughts!  Please, please please?

BOOK REVIEW – Midnight at the Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson

BOOK REVIEW – Midnight at the Electric by Jodi Lynn AndersonMidnight at the Electric by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Synopsis:

Divided by time. Ignited by a spark.

Kansas, 2065. Adri has secured a slot as a Colonist—one of the lucky few handpicked to live on Mars. But weeks before launch, she discovers the journal of a girl who lived in her house over a hundred years ago, and is immediately drawn into the mystery surrounding her fate. While Adri knows she must focus on the mission ahead, she becomes captivated by a life that’s been lost in time…and how it might be inextricably tied to her own.

Oklahoma, 1934. Amidst the fear and uncertainty of the Dust Bowl, Catherine fantasizes about her family’s farmhand, and longs for the immortality promised by a professor at a traveling show called the Electric. But as her family’s situation becomes more dire—and the suffocating dust threatens her sister’s life—Catherine must find the courage to sacrifice everything she loves in order to save the one person she loves most.

England, 1919. In the recovery following the First World War, Lenore struggles with her grief for her brother, a fallen British soldier, and plans to sail to America in pursuit of a childhood friend. But even if she makes it that far, will her friend be the person she remembers, and the one who can bring her back to herself?

While their stories spans thousands of miles and multiple generations, Lenore, Catherine, and Adri’s fates are entwined.

4.5 stars rounded up, because genuine tears and laughs are the most precious things, aren’t they? Midnight at the Electric relates several stories entwined, stories about loss and courage and hope and choices. You jump straight into new characters’ lives and you just care instantly and isn’t it baffling? When I see that I can read an entire book without giving a damn whatsoever and that Jodi Lynn Anderson manages to create a connection between her characters and I in the span of 2 pages, I feel awed.

“The longer I live, ” she looked up at the ceiling, “the more I think our big mistakes are not about having bad intentions, but just not paying attention. Just bumbling along, a little self-absorbed.”

I want to label this book as slow and then I don’t, because I’ve noticed that people associate slow and quiet to long and boring and that just won’t do. At no moment did I feel anything but enthralled, yet that’s true that’s Midnight at the Electric isn’t an action-packed novel.

Action-packed, again an adjective that annoys me, because there’s nothing that frustrates me more than trying to explain how futile actions are when it comes to pacing. A novel can be filled with events and a chore to get through all the same. Another – and yes yes yes I’m talking about this beauty – can be one million times more compelling even if it mostly deals with relationships and all that we humans ever feel and dream or fear.

“Lily shrugged. “I think that’s what you say when you can’t have something you want, isn’t it? You say you don’t want it in the first place.”

Above everything, Midnight at the Electric explores the strings that hold ourselves back. Does leaving is breaking them or is that another thing entirely? This question has been at the heart of my early years as an adult, and at 32 now, the only thing I can say is that I’ve found my answer, but that I genuinely believe that there’s no such thing as an universal one. Go and find yours.

Jodi Lynn Anderson‘s writing is stunning in all the ways that count for me, emotional without forcing and filled with these thoughtful moments that ring so true, as Leonore’s definition of grief :

“Sadness is only something that’s part of you. Grief becomes you; it wraps you up and changes you and makes everything – every little thing – different than it was before.”

The quote above is why I’ll always come back to her books, even if the subjects don’t appeal to me at first glance : because I know that in the end, her stories are so full of life that they’ll always contain little parts of me, they’ll always perfectly capture that feeling of possibility, and isn’t that the most magical side of life? I guess they just inspire me, and I can’t say that’s true for many books. I can’t recommend them enough.

BOOK REVIEW – Shag Lake by Susan McEachern

Synopsis:

Free short story, “Shag Lake Prequel: The Kiss” now available at all ebook retailers!

Geri McKenna hasn’t seen her brother’s best friend, Sean Eastman, since he graduated high school. Sean left their little town of Pembroke just hours after she nailed him with a kiss behind the shed, never to be seen or heard from again. No calls, no texts, no social media to stalk online.

Eight years after the awkward incident behind the shed, Geri and Sean meet again. She’s now an ambitious journalist working in a dead end job, and he’s a successful structural engineer working on a classified government project. For different reasons, they’re both interested in a woman who has gone missing amidst allegations of a Sasquatch encounter in the vicinity of Shag Lake. Geri is determined to get the scoop on the hottest story to hit the Internet, while Sean is determined to stop her.

Dodging other-worldly creatures and a corrupt shadow government, Geri and Sean struggle to find neutral ground in this debut new adult adventure by author Susan McEachern (who also writes young adult as award-winning author S.M. McEachern).

Review:

Shag Lake was absolutely riveting and spellbinding!  This book was so much more than I expected.  I mean, I had a feeling that I would like it, since I enjoyed the prequel.  And while it started out a little slow, I found myself connecting to the characters and enjoying where the story-line was going.  But before I knew it, I was around 35/40% into the story, and I was beyond obsessed.    I didn’t want to put the book down because Shag Lake built into an intricate story that was gripping, swoon worthy and so much fun!  This book was such a huge win!

I stand up and back away from the laptop, dragging both my hands through my hair. “There’s no way,” I whisper. “It’s just too crazy.”
I know Sean. He wouldn’t hurt anybody.
But how well do I know him?

The story started up with everyone back together, since Geri McKenna’s older brother is getting married.  Even Sean Eastman was there, and her brother’s friend had been completely MIA for the last eight years.  I was so nervous for the moment Geri would see Sean again.  Not only has she had a crush on him forever, but their last moment together involved a kiss that didn’t end in the greatest of ways.  I was so thankful that there was dual narrative between Geri and Sean, so we knew exactly what they were thinking and feeling.  And when they did see each other, I was happy that there was a strong chemistry between them.

But when she walked into the backyard this evening, I actually went weak in the knees. I had that moment when the world suddenly stopped turning and everyone at the party faded away into a blurry background, leaving just the two of us. I could barely breathe.
Get her out of your head , Eastman. She’s still off-limits.
I can’t offer her a future, and she deserves nothing less. – Sean

Fast forward to Shag Lake.  A women claimed Bigfoot attacked her, and her hiking partner is still missing.  Geri and Sean head there separately, but for entirely different reasons.  Geri thinks this news story about Bigfoot will catapult her career, and be the big break she’s been waiting for.   Whereas Sean has every reason under the sun to want to stop Geri in her tracks.  And this is where the action starts and their sexual chemistry gets ratcheted up!

A throaty burbling sound brings me to a dead halt. – Geri

As I got closer to the end of the book, I was obsessed with how it all came together.  Completely genius!  And while I’m being vague about what happens when they’re both at Shag Lake, it’s because it’ll be so much more fun to discover on your own.  But I can say that I loved the characters!  Geri was smart, determined, brave, yet she could still be so unsure of herself around Sean.  I loved how relatable she was!  And Sean was *starts wiping tears from eyes because he was so beautifully perfect* someone I fell completely in love with.  He was loyal, seductive, protective, playful and ever so sexy.  I have to mention the word balcony, because when you get to that part and see what he does, how could I not fall for such a caring, protective, fierce man?!  I love, love, love him!

And no matter how fast I push myself, the thing is keeping pace somewhere to my left. Not that I have eyes on the damn thing, but I can see bushes rustle, tree branches twitch, and the occasional tall patch of grass ripple.
Where the hell is it? Why can’t I see it?
– Geri

And here’s two thoughts on the creatures and villains in this book…..although I’m not going to give anything away –

*The “creatures” in this book was the most unique combination I’ve ever read about!  Together they were original, and I was fascinated with how they interacted.  There were some surprises in regards to what they were capable of and how they were all connected.

*The “bad guy” wasn’t that cut and dry.  While one of the creatures comes across as bad, you see that as the story starts to unfold there are so many shades of grey that appear.  Even within our own government.  And the way the creatures, their leadership and our government meshed together came across as shockingly real.  Which makes me laugh when I think about it because those creatures in our world?!  But still!  I could easily picture it.  Ugh, I wanna say SO much more.  But darn those spoilers!

We have to get out of here. This is utter madness. This is Alice in Wonderland kind of shit, and I don’t want to be a part of it anymore. – Geri

So I found myself with tears in my eyes quite a few times towards the end of this book.  And that ending was absolutely perfect.  Oh this book made me ever so happy!  I can’t recommend it enough!  If you adore science fiction that’s more closely related to The Lux Series by JLA or Broken Skies by Theresa Kay, then you may adore this book too.  Or even paranormal lovers, that are open to different creatures in a story, could find themselves loving it just as much as me.  It was such a wonderful surprise.  Enjoy!

P.S. I am definitely going to beg – can there please be more stories set in this world?  Whether it follows the characters into the future or focuses on others like Sean?  Please, please, please?  I absolutely loved this book and would die of happiness if I could read more set in this world! *fingers crossed*
