The Asteri have kept their word so far, leaving Bryce and Hunt alone. But with the rebels chipping away at the Asteri’s power, the threat the rulers pose is growing. As Bryce, Hunt, and their friends get pulled into the rebels’ plans, the choice becomes clear: stay silent while others are oppressed, or fight for what’s right. And they’ve never been very good at staying silent.

In this sexy, action-packed sequel to the #1 bestseller House of Earth and Blood, Sarah J. Maas weaves a captivating story of a world about to explode―and the people who will do anything to save it.

Review

*Spoiler Alert* While I will be putting any straight up spoilers in spoiler bars, please be warned that I may still infer things in my normal review that could still spoil things for you. Proceed with caution!

Hunt’s voice was a thunderclap as he said behind her, “Light it up, Bryce.”

I was just telling Chelsea that I had opened up a document to review this beauty and that it was such a daunting task because for as much as I am A COMPLETE STAN for SJM, I hardly ever, properly review her books. I love them so much but SO much goes on that all that is in my head afterwards are these threads of jumbled flailing that I can hardly untangle so far as to get a coherent thought that isn’t just straight up screaming out.

But I’m here. I have written down very specific points I want to talk about. Wish me luck.

This book….may have topped ACOMAF for me. *Gasps in a huge breath* There I said it. ACOMAF has held my top favorite book spot since it came out and not even ACOSF (Cassian and Nesta are still my OTP) had superseded that. HOEAB is the only book that I have EVER read that consistently makes me cry and gives me physical reactions (goosebumps, aching chest LOL, etc.) in the exact same spots during every re-read, even when I already know exactly what’s coming. While I still didn’t hold it up on as high as a pedestal as I did ACOTAR and ToG, that might honestly just be because I had YEARS to fall in love with those characters over multiple books, whereas until now we had only had one Crescent City book. Besides that, the fact that this is FIRMLY in the adult fantasy/ adult urban fantasy genre has really set it apart. It’s in an entirely different league and Sarah has found. Her. Fucking. Element.

“Boyfriend sounds weird for you. It’s so … young. But what else is there?”
If he had a star on his chest, Hunt knew it’d be glowing as he asked, “Partner?”
“Not sexy enough.”
“Lover?”
“Does that come with a ruff and lute?”

He swept a wing over her bare thigh.“Anyone ever tell you that you’re a pain in the ass?”
“Just ye olde lover.”

Let’s start with the OG stars of the show. Hunt and Bryce. Sarah had been hinting that she was going to be holding these two back from one another since hey, they only have known each other for about five months before going through some super traumatic experiences together to top off all of the other trauma shit that each had previously individually experienced. Fun times. I do love that they wanted to try to explore a “normal” relationship with one another first, even if I myself felt blue balled and let’s be real, these two were NEVER going to have a normal relationship/life.

To keep things simple though, I love their relationship. I love their banter. I love how horny they are for each other’s power. I love how they both stand up for one another only to turn around and roast the hell out of the other person in the next minute. So many one liners in this book that I highlighted and that had me straight CACKLING. Even their sexy time banter=UNPARALLED. Gods so fucking hot I can’t even stand it. These two are so perfect for one another.

And let’s talk about the –FOLLOW ME TO THE SPOILER BAR MY FRIENDS – View Spoiler »

In short. I love them and am obsessed with them and as I told Chelsea, I will eat a fucking cactus if they don’t wind up together for all eternity.

Hunt growled, low and deep.
“I’m going to fuck you senseless.” Her nipples were hard as pebbles, and she squirmed against him. Nothing but those little lace panties separated her sweetness from his bare thighs.
But then Holstrom shouted, “That sounds medically dangerous!”

On to the rest of the cast. GUYS. Guys. GuYs. I love this ragtag group of loveable idiots. I know some people might not like that they added more POVs but I LIVE for that. Loved and both cried getting to know Tharion and what he was dealing with in the Blue Court (spoiler alert a bunch of BS). Ithan– SARAH WERE YOU TRYING TO DESTROY US MORE THAN USUAL?? HUH WERE YOU???? Loved Dec and Flynn AS ALWAYS and even the Cormac bits were interesting/enlightening in certain ways *wink*. The one person I found myself missing the most at first was Hypaxia but she does come into play eventually and I was so glad, especially when she and Bryce had some girl time. Queens need to stick together (and no I am not calling Bryce a queen in the literal aspect….yet anyway). Who is going to come up with a new squad name for me because I really think we need one.

AND NOW, FOR THE BEST BOY OF ALL. RUHN DAAANAAAANNNNNNNNNNN. *the crowd roars* Yallllll. My love for Ruhn in book one pales in comparison for what I feel for him now. We learn more about his past AND just see more of him as a friend and Bryce’s brother and boy was my heart working in overtime. He deserves SO SO much and I am so fucking glad that his TRASH father didn’t suck all of the joy and kindness out of him. Autumn King is #1 on my shit list let me tell you. And after that Pollux and Rigelus tied. ANYWAY we DO get a new ship in this book involving Ruhn that….well, I’ll go ahead and say it. I am fucking obsessed you guys. There are quite a few bad-guys-or-are-they in this book and I was MOST DELIGHTED when both were uncovered as GOOD. I seriously have been internally screaming since I found out about one of them in particular. Anyway not going into detail but just know, this new ship is my everything and I can’t wait for more.

Ithan said slowly, “Hel is our enemy.”
“Is it?”
Aidas laughed, ears twitching. “Who wrote the history?”
“The Asteri,”
 Tharion said darkly.

I feel myself winding down so I had better go out with a bang here. This wouldn’t be a Sarah book or even series if it didn’t have a BILLION twists and turns that you never saw coming. We learned so many more things about Danika (which I honestly hadn’t expected her to STILL be playing such a big role) and I’m not going to lie, I was very pissed off FOR Bryce. I can only hope she had at least PLANNED on telling her best friend someday. Sighhh

One thing that I had expected out of this book was the talk of rebellion and the looming war on the horizon. What I didn’t expect was to learn exactly what we learned. That even though we hate the Asteri and know they are wrong, there are also plenty in the human rebellion that are almost just as awful. The question of WHO might be the best people to rule if the Asteri are dethroned comes into play a lot and it was actually very interesting to think about. I think a LOT of realllly big changes and power plays are going to be made in the final book.

And finally. Yes. I think you all know what’s coming. Dive into that spoiler for some really fun flailing.

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to re-read all my favorite parts over again.

Bryce faced her father. The Autumn King said in a voice so low no one else could hear, “You little bitch.”
Bryce smiled broadly. “It’s ‘You little bitch, Your Highness.’”

Synopsis:

Twenty-eight year-old Cassie Strega can’t escape fate.

All she wants is to live a normal, quiet life delivering the babies in her small town. But when she discovers she comes from a lineage of witches, her life becomes extraordinary—in the gravely dangerous type of way.

Then, she’s reunited with her first love.

Orion, the sultry Fae warrior who broke her heart years before, is searching for a baby. Not just any baby, but the queen of the Fae who will one day lead them in their final battle against the demons determined to rule the world. The same baby who has been calling to Cassie for help in her dreams.

Fighting the intense attraction of their former blood bond, Cassie and Orion work together to find the child. But when the heartbreak that nearly destroyed Cassie nine years before looms once more, she’ll have to decide whether getting involved in the supernatural war is worth losing everything, including her life.

Review:

A Wicked and Beautiful Garden was an enchanting tale that will sweep you away!  With magic, questions and the unknown swirling around, it made this book impossible to put down.  If you’re a fan of fantasy or urban fantasy, then you’ll definitely want this one on your tbr!

Once upon a time, I had fallen in love with him, and to him, I was nothing more than a momentary distraction.

Cassie Strega was kind, caring and felt so much around her.  She loved her job of delivering babies and living in her quiet, little town.  So when her ex walked back into her life, everything changed.  The loss of Orion had devastated Cassie years ago.  Little did she know that she would need his help soon.  The world was about to wake up knowing that witches exist, and Cassie was one of them.  But he needed her help too.  Orion, who was Fae, was searching for a baby.  She was their queen who was to lead them into battle against the demons.  And that same baby had been calling to Cassie.  With so much at stake and up in the air, their fates were irrevocably tied together…for now.

“Take what you need from me, Cass.” His hot breath tickled my ear. “Take everything and all you need. I’m yours.”

I wasn’t sure what to think of Orion MacAleese at first.  He was a warrior Fae that was tasked with finding their queen.  And while he didn’t always play by the rules, it was obvious that he still cared for Cassie.  Fiercely.  He would do anything to protect her and he showed her time and again exactly that with his actions and words.  While Orion could be thoughtful and caring, he also had kept many secrets from Cassie.  And Cassie struggled with his deception and secrets, while trying to ignore the passion that was running between them.

Making the strands a rugged mess, Orion shoved a frustrated hand through his hair. “What do you want me to say?”
I slapped my palm against the table. “I want the truth!” I whisper-shouted . “I want this black hole in my brain to be gone. I want to know what happened to us!”

I loved learning about Cassie’s powers right along with her.  She had always been able to read human’s emotions, but as she learned about controlling the elements I was fascinated.   I also loved watching what Orion was capable of, I was jealous of his transporting skills!  But with life and death situations surrounding them, and fate constantly pushing them together, it was hard to ignore all of the emotions there.  Cassie tried her best to keep Orion at an arm’s length away, but as we got peaks into their past it was so obvious how wonderful they were together.  As they continued to work on their common goal, to find the baby, it became harder to ignore that they belonged together.  And the chemistry, lust and love that swirled around them.

“Heaven, hell and earth, Cassie. I will move each and every single one for you.”

A Wicked and Beautiful Garden will keep readers hooked from beginning to end!  I’m so happy that the ending was the perfect stopping spot!  We got to breathe for a moment and even got a few answers, but there are still so many unanswered questions.  From how their world worked, to those around Cassie, to even her past, I can’t wait to learn it all!  If you’re a fan of JLA, I think there may be a good chance you’ll enjoy this book!  There were quite a few elements in this series that reminded me of a few of JLA’s series, so if you like her stories then I think you’ll like this one too!  I can’t wait for that next book!

Synopsis:

When everyone wants you dead, good help is really hard to find.

Piper Griffiths wants one thing in life: to become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons. There are three obstacles in her way.

The first is Lyre. Incubus. Hotter than hell and with a wicked streak to match. His greatest mission in life is to annoy the crap out of her, but he isn't as harmless as he seems. The second is Ash. Draconian. Powerful. Dangerous. He knows too much and reveals nothing. Also, disturbingly attractive--and scary. Did she mention scary?

The third is the Sahar Stone. Top secret magical weapon of mass destruction. Previously hidden in her Consulate until thieves broke in, went on a murder spree, and disappeared with the weapon.

And they left Piper to take the fall for their crimes.

Now she's on the run, her dreams of becoming a Consul shattered and every daemon in the city gunning to kill her. She's dead on her own, but there's no one she can trust--no one except two entirely untrustworthy daemons ... See problems one and two.

Review:

Buddy Read with Sophie at Beware of the Reader and Raven at Dreamy Addictions

Chase The Dark was an action packed ride that had me completely obsessed.  With magic, secrets, friendship, betrayal, lust and the beginnings of something more in the pages, I fell madly in love with this book.  The characters became my friends and not only did I deeply feel everything they did, but I was terrified with what was to come next.  There was a richness to the world they lived in, and I felt like I was with them every step of the way.  If you love urban fantasy, friendships, action or slow burn romance then definitely add this one to your tbr!

The only two people in the world she could trust right now were sitting on either side of her and she couldn’t trust them at all. They were daemons.

By that second page, I already loved Piper Griffiths’ thoughts.  She was an Apprentice Consul and worked and lived at the Consulate, which was like an embassy to the daemons.  Our world had been opened to the Underworld and Overworld years ago and the Consuls helped keep the peace and protected humans from daemons.  Right from the beginning we got to see Piper’s fighting skills.  She was fierce, deadly and totally kicked ass. Piper was a haemon, part human and daemon, but she possessed no magic like the other haemons and daemons around her.  And that was a huge issue, since all Consul’s had magic to help keep the peace.

Some nights she wondered if she was looking for goodness in him that wasn’t there. Other nights, she imagined a thousand ways to tell him thank you and none seemed good enough.

While daemons stayed at the Consulate, there were two she’d seen around before.  Lyre and Ash.  Lyre was an incubus, who was sexy, playful, intoxicating and fun.  He had a heart of gold underneath it all and I loved watching how much he cared for his friends.  And then there was Ash.  He was a draconian who was extremely powerful and had a dangerous reputation.  Others feared and respected him, so I was leery of him, just like Piper.  But when Piper got framed for taking the Sahar Stone, a magical weapon of mass destruction, she found herself running for her life.  With Lyre and Ash right by her side.

The world was spinning but Ash’s arms were steady and strong. Always strong. He was her only rock in the ocean of adversity that had flooded her life since the night of the attack on the Consulate. He was the only one who showed up again and again, his strength offered, nothing asked in return.

While I loved Lyre, I found myself becoming obsessed with Ash.  Ash was a huge mystery who was sarcastic, smart, and quick on his feet.  He was so subtle and mysterious that he pulled me right into his dark web.  Especially since he helped defend and protect Piper’s life every step of the way, even if they struggled or butted heads with each other.  And the moments where he would show his emotions, oh, Ash stole my breath away.

She clamped her fingers over the back of his head and pulled him closer still, demanding even more. His hand tightened in her hair and she tilted her head farther back as their kiss deepened into something even wilder.

Ash, Lyre and Piper were running for their lives, while trying to prove their innocence.  Being thrown into life and death situations made them quickly form a bond and I loved how much they trusted each other.  Moments between them made me smile and laugh, which was needed with all of the action that surrounded them.  It felt like I always had sweaty palms lol.  On top of that, I had no clue what was going to happen next.  Just like that moment with the hottest kiss ever *fans face*.  Yup I was obsessed.

Black irises met hers. Terror sucked out the breath she’d just taken. She clenched her teeth and fought to remember his careful touch on her cheek. He wouldn’t hurt her. He wouldn’t. He’d promised.

Chase the Dark was impossible to put down!  And while I figured out one thing, there were quite a few twists I didn’t see coming.  So with betrayal, secrets, friendship, lies, and trust, you can count on this book pulling your emotions every which way.  Plus I have so much hope for a certain two characters.  If they move forward, their love for each other is going to be beyond powerful *fingers crossed*!

“Is he alive, Zwi?” she whispered. She gathered the little creature against her chest and hugged her gently. “Please let him be alive.”

PS I don’t want to say how she’s connected to the story, but I loved Zwi with my whole heart.  She was a little dragonet, and I wanted to steal her out of this book!

Synopsis:

Rule one: Don't look at the demon.

When I arrived at my uncle's house, I expected my relatives to be like me—outcast sorcerers who don't practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.

Rule two: Don't listen to the demon.

My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I'm supposed to act like I don't know how illegal and dangerous it is.

Rule three: Don't talk to the demon.

All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn't find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn't notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn't break the rules.

But I did, and now it's too late

Review:

Taming Demons for Beginners was a ton of fun, action packed and impossible to put down.  Just from that first chapter I was hooked and I screamed out loud best chapter ever!  Oh my gosh you guys, Annette Marie knows how to pull you in and continually have you begging for more.  The storyline was addictive, the characters lept from the pages and she created a world I never wanted to leave.  This book is for everyone out there that loves to say just one more chapter, and then before you know it you’ve finished the whole book.  In one day.

Adrenaline flooded my body. Panic screeched in my head, but I couldn’t move. Frozen like a rabbit in the wolf’s teeth, I stared at him in horror.
He held my fingers in a tight grip, then pulled.

I loved Robin.  She always seemed to be baking or have her nose in a book, and those are my two favorite things!  Robin was such a sweet girl with a huge heart.  But she could be shy and timid, and my heart hurt for for her.  Robin had moved in with her Uncle, after her parents passed away.  She was told to avoid magic, but her Uncle was swirling in it.  He summoned demons and created contacts with them.  That was extremely illegal.  All Robin had to do was mind her own business and stay away from the demon that was trapped in his library.  But who knew just how impossible that would become.

Payilas.” His whisper demanded my answer.
“Protect me.”

The demon, ohhhhh I was obsessed with him right away.  I probably shouldn’t like someone who was supposed to be a killer, but Zylas had me deep in his clutches.  I was fascinated learning everything I could about him.  His words and mannerisms cracked me up, even though he wasn’t trying to be funny.  He didn’t understand so many things like what a tv was to blushing.  So it felt like he was from a different world, but at the same time, there was so much Robin didn’t understand either.

“What do you want?” My arm was on fire, blazing with agony, and I didn’t understand his question. My crumbling composure gave way.
“I don’t want to die,” I sobbed, shaking and gasping.

I loved watching Robin and Zylas learn about each other.  They were worlds apart and their misunderstandings had me laughing out loud.  Even when it was a serious moment, you couldn’t knock the smile off of my face at times.  But Robin grew so much in this story, and it felt like it was because of Zylas.  And Zylas, well I can’t talk much about him, but I loved watching them both evolve as the story unfolded.

I’d known full well that Zylas was a risk to everyone around me.
I’d known, and I’d ignored the danger.

Hold on because this book had heart pounding action that had me on the edge of my seat.  There were intense moments that were life or death.  Some of them I never even saw coming, so I gasped or screamed out loud. And when the pieces to the puzzle finally started to fall into place, it was terrifying.  Deadly.  This book truly had it all.

Kill them all, I thought as clearly as I could. The first chance you get.
His tail twitched, his stare boring into mine. The connection between us burned hot, an invisible thread that bound our fates together. Crimson light glowed across his fingers and the semi-transparent talons that tipped them. His tail slid slowly across the pavement. The twenty yards between us yawned even wider.

There were side characters I desperately want to talk about, but it’s best not knowing anything about them.  All I can say is I somehow got attached to one of them and I’m happily shocked I did.  And while I didn’t read the other series this one is linked to, you don’t need to, it stood on it’s own.  But I’ll definitely be picking it up!  So yes, I recommend this book!  With magic swirling through the pages and characters that I absolutely loved, I can’t wait to see what happens next.

“In my world,” he said unexpectedly, “there is a type of … tree.”
I faced him again, my brow furrowed in puzzlement.
“On the tree, it grows small …” He cupped his hands as though holding something. “… small fruits. The outside is poisonous, deadly, but inside is juicy and sweet. We fight over these trees. I have killed to take the fruit when it is ripe.”
He picked up another s’more cookie. “These are better.”

PS I’d love to know the recipes Robin made, they sound delicious!  Especially the marshmallow-stuffed s’more cookies!  YUM!

Synopsis:

Clio might be a nymph living in exile among humans. And she might possess the rare ability to mimic any magic she sees. And she might have just seriously ticked off the most powerful family of spell weavers in the Underworld.

But she is not in love with an incubus.

Lyre is the rebellious black sheep of said weaver family, and he's the only reason she survived her recent Underworld "vacation." He's also the sexiest thing she's ever seen. Together, they have to track down a catastrophically dangerous magic--a magic he created, she sort of stole, and they both lost--before his family gets their hands on it. And that means fighting alongside him in a desperate attempt to avert complete disaster.

But she is definitely not in love with him. At least, she's pretty sure she's not.

Mostly sure. Maybe sure?...Crap.

Review:

*Spoilers for The Night Realm, you can read my review for the previous book here.*

The Shadow Weave was a thrill of a ride and peril filled the pages.  It made this book impossible to put down and I kept hoping that Lyre and Clio would catch a break.  While that rarely seemed to happen, I still found lightness in so many different moments.  Friendship, loyalty, love and laughter could be found within the pages and I absolutely loved that.  So if you adore Urban Fantasy stories that keep you on the edge of your seat and has a romance laced throughout the pages, then this is definitely a series you have to check out!

Leaving the weapon embedded in his body, she stepped into his field of vision.
“How does it feel?” she hissed.
His eyes bulged. Blood bubbled from his mouth and he toppled over with the sword impaled in his back.

Clio and Lyre escaped from the Underworld.  And they both had a common goal in place. To travel to the Overworld and get back the KLOC before it caused chaos and ruin in their worlds.  And while they faced countless obstacles that at times seemed insurmountable, they were being hunted. I literally screamed out loud when I discovered who was hunting them.  Ugh. And even then, I still kept hoping that there would be light at the end of their tunnel. But their lives were now brutal, so hold on because this story definitely gets intense.

He’d intended to release her immediately, but his arms tightened instead. Wrapped around her small frame, his cheek pressed against her hair and his eyes squeezed shut, he held her to him. For one brief moment, he allowed himself to acknowledge his pathetic relief that he wasn’t alone in this.
And how petrified he was of the moment when he’d have to face this new future on his own.

While horrific events kept unfolding, they discovered how much they relied on one another.  Not only did they fight adversaries together, but they put their lives in each other’s hands time and again.  It was emotional and beautiful to watch.  And through it all, a true friendship started to blossom.  Even with that sexual tension between them. And it didn’t matter that they were from different worlds or that they knew they shouldn’t be together.  They fit perfectly and the chemistry was impossible to ignore!

“So you’d rather pretend you don’t want me?” His hands slid around her waist then down over her backside. He pulled her hips hard into his and his mouth dropped closer again, lips brushing against hers as he spoke. “Because I don’t want to pretend anymore.”

So just like Clio, I found myself falling even harder for Lyre.  But at the same time, my heart ached for him since he left his whole life behind.  Thankfully he had Clio who he could count on, but even she was keeping secrets from him.  Although with his quirky sense of humor and his ability to be extremely bold to Clio, he added so much light to their dire situation.  And Lyre was such a charmer who was also perfect at the art of seduction……I love him so much! So I was extremely happy to see that Clio felt like his equal.  She progressed so much since the beginning.  Clio’s fighting skills were admirable and she was officially kick ass.  Together they were a sight to behold.

She should have been afraid. She should have been quaking with terror, but rage and anguish pumped through her veins.

The Shadow Weave was such a fabulous addition to the Spell Weaver Trilogy and I can’t wait to see how the final book plays out!  While I could have done with some shorter fight scenes, I still found myself enthralled with the story and I couldn’t help but love these characters!  And that ending?! Ohhhhhhhhh it was epic! It has me ecstatic to see what will happen next!
