Synopsis:

In The Great Pursuit, the dramatic sequel to the New York Times bestselling The Great Hunt, Wendy Higgins delivers another thrilling fantasy filled with dangerous enemies, political intrigue, searing romance, and a princess who is willing to do everything to protect her kingdom.

One hunt has ended, but the pursuit for love and justice continues.

The kingdom of Lochlanach has traded the great beast that once terrorized the realm of Eurona for something far more dangerous: the ire of powerful Lashed woman Rosaria Rocato. Rosaria demands that Eurona overturn the laws prohibiting magic, or an innocent will be killed each day.

Despite the king’s resistance, Princess Aerity believes they must make peace with the Lashed, and though she’s accepted a betrothal to the man who took down the beast, she cannot help thinking about Paxton, the Lashed man who stole her heart and disappeared.

Aerity soon discovers that Paxton has joined Rosaria’s army in the war against her family. Though her feelings for him are still strong, her duty to her kingdom and her family is stronger—especially when her parents are kidnapped and she has to step up to the throne and once again put aside what’s best for her in order to do what’s best for her people. Paxton and Princess Aerity must fight to see what is more powerful: their love or the impending war between the magical Lashed and the non-magic humans.

Review:

***Spoilers for The Great Pursuit.  You can read my review of the 1st book here.***

The Great Pursuit was a fabulous conclusion filled with action, adventure, love and political intrigue. Deceit, lies, betrayal, hope, sacrifice, love, and friendship were splashed across the pages and I fell madly in love with this duology. My favorite things by far were –

✮ Everlasting Love –

“What will happen to us, Pax?” she whispered.
A deep sense of desperation to grasp their time together rose within her. This could be it. This could be their last moment alone together.
He held her tighter and pressed his forehead into her abdomen. “I just want to keep you safe.” – Aerity and Paxton

I was so nervous and constantly trying to figure out how Aeity and Paxton could be together. She’s betrothed to Lord Alvi, so how could she get out of that? How could she be with Paxton? My mind kept pondering those questions, because I’m neurotic like that lol. But as I watched Aeirty and Paxton, the risks they took for one another had me on the edge of my seat. I was breathless with how much they were each willing to sacrifice for the other. Their love was so beautiful. And their moments together made my heart race. They were definitely a couple I was rooting for, and I hoped against hope that they could beat the odds that were stacked up against them.

✮ A True Leader –

Determination rang out inside her, clearing away all doubts and fears before they had a chance to surface. She had no time for any of that. – Aerity

Aerity proved herself time and again what a competent, fair ruler she was. But thank goodness she made a few selfish decisions, because she deserved them! The challenges and hardships she faced seemed all consuming at times. And I easily found my heart breaking and struggling right along with hers. Yet she was a smart, strong woman, so I always had faith in the choices she made.

✮ It’s Not Just About Princess Aerity and Paxton Seabolt –

Vixie propped a hand on her hip. “If you wished to ward him off, you could have simply kissed me. I’ve heard that strategy works well.”
Tiern’s eyes rounded, and Vixie pressed her fingers to her lips to hold back a laugh at her boldness.
“Perhaps next time I will, little sea star,” he said threateningly.

Just as I became attached to so many others in The Great Hunt, it felt as though those characters played an even bigger part in this book. I became obsessed with not only them staying alive and their happiness, but also their love lives too. See there’s two other couples I was rooting for. This first was Tiern and Princess Dixie. Ohhh Tiern, sigh. He was just as fabulous at making me swoon as his big brother, Paxton. He was charismatic, charming, sexy and their banter and fights lit up heart! The other couple involves Lady Wyneth, but you’ll figure out the man I was rooting for when you read this book. *winks*

✮ A New Favorite Character –

“By the seas, you are rather cute in an ugly sort of way, aren’t you?” Harrison sighed and passed him up to a giggling Aerity. – About Furball!

I LOVED Furball! Oh my goodness, I adored him so much. And I’m sorry I can’t tell you anything about him, but I have a feeling you’ll love him too.

✮ Friendship –

She whispered to him, “What have I done, Lief? That was awful!”
And to her utter surprise, Lief palmed her cheek and gently said. “No, Princess. That was incredible.” And then he began to laugh.

Not only did this book display strong, female friendships, which I loved! But it also displayed strong non-sexual friendships between males and females, which I loved too. My favorite was Aerity and Harrison, who have been friends forever. We got to see many sides of their friendship, and just how far they would go to help each other out. And my second favorite friendship was Aerity with Lief. While he could be frustrating at times, with his beliefs and actions, I loved how they pulled together. I loved, loved, loved how their friendship evolved over time. It was perfect!

When I closed this book, I was so ecstatic with how everything panned out. Especially that epilogue! Oh, Wendy Higgins’ epilogues are always so perfectly beautiful. But I’m going to hold out hope that someday, if we’re lucky, we’ll hear more about Princess Dixie and Lady Wyneth’s HEA with their sexy men. Fingers crossed…….

Synopsis:

Wendy Higgins, the author of the New York Times bestselling Sweet Evil series, reimagines a classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale with The Great Hunt, a dramatic, romance-filled fantasy with rugged hunters, romantic tension, and a princess willing to risk all to save her kingdom.

When a monstrous beast attacks in Eurona, desperate measures must be taken. The king sends a proclamation to the best and bravest hunters: whoever kills the creature will win the hand of his daughter Princess Aerity as a reward. The princess recognizes her duty but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger—she was meant to marry for love—until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. And while there’s no denying the fiery chemistry between them, Princess Aerity feels that Paxton’s mysteriousness is foreboding, maybe even dangerous.

Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He is determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast—but the princess continues to surprise him, and the secrets he’s buried begin to surface against his wishes.

Review:

The Great Hunt was absolutely enchanting! I became addicted to the story-line, infatuated with the characters, and I was reminded yet again why I love Wendy Higgins’ books. And while I thought I had it figured out, oh how wrong I was. Tears fell down long after I finished that last page. So I definitely can’t wait to see how it all ends in the final book!

She knew she should say something, but words . . . there were no words. Her life, as she knew it, was over. Her future, and the freedom she’d imagined, was dead. – Aerity

I have to throw this out there, since so many reviews have talked about this – but yes the beginning was slow. BUT it made perfect sense to me. You see, the first fifth of the book set the characters, theme, and land into place. Learning all about the characters and the world they were in had a twofold affect. One – I became easily attached to all of the characters since I felt like I knew them inside out. Second – I completely understood the world and visualized everything so perfectly and beautifully. And no, there’s no info dumps or overly detailed descriptions.

They were herding the beast straight for them.
“It’s coming!” Tiern shouted from behind him. – Paxton

So in a world of castles, royalty, and forbidden magic (except in a few instances), a great beast terrorized commoners and royalty alike. The beast was enormous and could tear men’s bodies to shreds in second. To restore peace to the land, the King declared a proclamation, kill the beast, and marry his daughter, Princess Aerity. Oh, how I loved the princess! Princess Aerity was brave, strong, honorable, and underneath it all she was compassionate and humbling. She was everything that would make a fair Queen one day! But at the same time, she pushed boundaries. Especially when those boundaries related to one of the hunters that was at the Castle to kill the great beast. And that hunters name was Paxton.

“What if I said I do want you to kill the beast, Paxton Seabolt? What if I want it to be you?” -Aerity

Paxton Seabolt is my favorite type of guy. Ever. He could be a jerk at times, he easily appeared closed off, yet he gave us these moments that showed he was so much more. Moments when he was selfless, rational, thoughtful and loved his family fiercely. Yet to Princess Aerity, he came across as a closed off jerk, the majority of time. I always have faith in those types of hero’s, and all I can say is that I am completely head over heels in love with Paxton. You definitely want to meet him!

“No,” Aerity whispered. A deep longing for Paxton expanded within her. “Seas, no. Please.” Her stomach knotted so hard that it sent another shooting pain through her ribs.

But there was SO much more going on in the book than just Aerity and Paxton. There was the magical group of the Lashed, whose history and current situation was terrifying. Then there was the hundred of hunters, many from afar, that had come to slay the beast. And then there was all of the royalty in the castle. I found myself attached to so many of them, and that made me nervous since deaths happened left and right. So what started out a little slow, easily led to a tale that gripped me. The tension, plight, sexual tension, and my emotional attachment to so many of the characters made me fall for The Great Hunt. Now I’m off to read the final book in this duology!

PS My faves, besides Princess Aerity & Paxton, were Tiern (Paxton’s brother), Lord Alvi, Harrison, Zandora, Lady Wyneth and Princess Dixie.

Synopsis:

Sophos, under the guidance of yet another tutor, practices his swordplay and strategizes escape scenarios should his father's villa come under attack. How would he save his mother? His sisters? Himself? Could he reach the horses in time? Where would he go? But nothing prepares him for the day armed men, silent as thieves, swarm the villa courtyard ready to kill, to capture, to kidnap. Sophos, the heir to the throne of Sounis, disappears without a trace.

Across the small peninsula battles are fought, bribes are offered, and conspiracies are set in motion. Darkening the horizon, the Mede Empire threatens, always, from across the sea. And Sophos, anonymous and alone, bides his time. Sophos, drawing on his memories of Gen, Pol, the Magus and Eddis, sets out on an adventure that will change all of their lives forever

Look, I’m not going to beat about the bush : yes, I know that the relative absence of Eugenides as an explanation for my rating is ridiculous. I objectively, honestly know that. Now, does that change in any way the fact that my heart is ridiculous by essence, because that’s what hearts do, right, falling in love, breaking, and so on, as the unruly little shits they are? Well, no.

I can stress
a) how captivating A Conspiracy of Kings is ;
b) how brilliantly Megan Whalen Turner handles the POVs ;
c) how endearing and interesting Sophos is (and his growth! Awesome stuff here, I’m telling you!)

(we could go all day, but I’ll choose not to, if that’s okay with you)

… having said all that, I can’t ignore that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did books 2 and 3, and I very much believe that it’s because Eugenides’ interactions and tricks are necessary for me to give it a full 5. Sophos is a very good character, but he lacks Gen’s spark.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HOWEVER, let’s not make it seem as if A Conspiracy of Kings wasn’t an amazing YA Fantasy novel, alright? Because just thinking about what that genre offers us 99% of the time, there’s no forgetting that Megan Whalen Turner has by far the upper hand over Morgan Rhodes, Sarah J. Maas or even – and I do love them – Cinda Williams Chima or Julie Kagawa. By the way, I saw readers shelving these novels as middle-grade, and I wonder… Is that because there’s no sex scenes, even fade-to-black? No, I have to ask, because I genuinely do not understand what’s so childish about intricate conspiracies, complex characters, a writing very engaging, blurred lines between good and evil – there’s no such thing as a moustache-twisting villain in these books, but rather, complicated human beings who make the choices they think are best… Perhaps I am deluded about what is Middle-Grade and what it is not, but please enlighten me? Or maybe not, as I’m quite convinced that I wouldn’t agree with you. So there’s that.

“Then I walked to my bed and sat, making a show of careless bravado by crossing my legs and slumping as if I had not a worry in the world. In other words, I gave my best imitation of Eugenides.”

Anyway, as usual with series, I won’t rehash the plot because
1) You may not have read the other books, and would probably burn me at a stake if I spoiled you, and we wouldn’t want that, would we?
2) I tend to repeat myself in these cases and I assure you that you don’t want to be on the receiving end of my disheveled rambling when this series is concerned. Trust me. Or no, better : ask my friends.

On a final note : Yes, every one of Eugenides’ apparitions gave me life, and I’m almost certain that would I reread A Conspiracy of Kings later, I’d probably give out a 5 stars rating.

For now, I’ll have to accept that I am not an objective reviewer.

*snorts*

As if it existed.

Synopsis:

The second book in the Infinity time travel series is full of action, romance, and an intricately designed roller coaster plot.

One mistake can change everything. Ashlyn Calvert finds that out the hard way when a bad decision leads to the death of her best friend, Noah Anderson.

Only Noah isn’t really gone. Thanks to his parents’ company, the Infinity Division, there is a version of him skipping from one dimension to another, set on revenge for the death of his sister, Kori. When a chance encounter brings him face-to-face with Ash, he’s determined to resist the magnetic pull he’s felt for her time and time again. Because falling for Ash puts his mission in danger.

But there’s more going on in Ash’s alternate universe than either of them knows: a mysterious project called Omega. A conspiracy spanning multiple Earths and revolving around none other than Ash. Its creators would do anything to keep Omega secret…

Anything.

Review:

Omega was action packed, fast paced and so much fun!  And I loved being with these characters again!  They felt like a group of friends that I’d known forever.  But before I even read the first page, I was a little nervous since this story would be told by different characters.  You see, in Infinity we followed Cade and Kori.  And in this story we followed Noah, who was Kori’s brother from another realm, and Cade’s best friend.  Plus we followed and finally met Ash.  Ash was a constant that always seemed to be in Noah’s lives on all of the realms, well except the one he was from.  They had this intense sexual chemistry.  And he thought that that was all they had.  Until he met this realms Ash.  Once I started to watch them interact, I realized that I loved having Omega’s journey told from Noah and Ash!  I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!

His hand grazed my backside and I whirled on him, an even mix of horrified and angry. “Watch it.”
A spark of mischief glinted in his eyes, there and gone in a single beat of my heart before being replaced with steely resignation. “Oh yeah. I got kidnapped and tossed in a mad scientist’s basement just so I could have a shot at touching your ass. Get over yourself and move.”

Since I could talk on and on about this book, here are some of my favorite things about Omega –

✮  A strong chemistry that slowly unfolded into more –

He caught the swing inches from his face, smirking like I’d just whispered all the dirty, dark secrets I had in his ear. “Hit a nerve, did I? Maybe you like rude. Maybe jackass is your kink.”He let go of my fist and leaned a little closer. “Go ahead. Tell me I’m not even the tiniest bit right. Tell me—”
I let out a howl and launched myself at him, but instead of stopping me, this time he allowed me to collide with him, full force. When I pulled away to smack him, he held tight and let out a sound that stirred something white-hot in the pit of my stomach. Secured tight, pressed up against his annoyingly perfect body, I felt him laugh. “See, I’m getting the impression that you like the chainsaw version of me.”
And then he kissed me.

On every other realm that Noah met Ash, they just had a strong chemistry.  He would always hook up with her and move on.  But in this realm, their relationship was different.  Yeah they had chemistry that made them want to touch, kiss and be near one another, but there was more.  And watching them see what that more was all about warmed my heart.  The friendship they built slowly over time felt real.  And the things they ended up doing for one another felt plausible and a natural course of action.  But they both fought what was there every step of the way.  So their moments together made for some explosive scenes!

✮  Uncovering the truth and seeing the bigger picture –

Helping this Noah and his friends might actually be the key to my freedom. – Ash

This time around, while there was some focus on Dylan, there was SO much more going on.  In case you need a refresher, Dylan was Cade’s brother who murdered the Kori from Cade and Noah’s realm.  The focus shifted from hunting Dylan to what was happening with their interdimensional travel.  I can’t say more, but wow!  Talk about insanity, morally wrong, yet so intriguing at the same time.  It left me excited to see how it will affect the third book!

✮  Fascinating world building –

Body-numbing fear bubbled up in my gut and turned my vision watery. But, despite the near paralyzing terror, I picked myself up and ran. – Ash

I loved how each realm they landed on was different.  Whether it was barely noticeable or a stark contrast, I was always intrigued.  And the realm we spent the majority of time on, in Omega, crime controlled the land.  Al Capone was the President and their tier system was horrific.  People’s morals were nonexistent in certain situations and it was truly a nightmare world.  I was fascinated yet horrified as we saw scientists and high profile people harm others without a second thought.  I loved how each realm was so easy to visualize in every aspect!

✮  Interdimension travel and multiple of the same characters that was easy to follow –

“There’s never going to be a time for this,” she said. “Right now? This time ? It’s all we have. It’s all we might ever have…”

While it may sound confusing to talk about, it was all very easy to follow.  We meet or hear about multiple of the same characters, yet they all stood out whole, original and easily discernible from one another!  The same stands for each dimension!  I was never once confused.

✮  I adored the relationships that took place –

We walked a few more feet and I stopped. I didn’t want to venture too far from the motel. “The whole thing is asinine. Why the hell does it even bother me? Why do I care where she ends up?”
Kori smiled , then rose onto her toes and kissed my cheek. “You don’t need me to tell you why. You already know.” – Noah and Kori

While I loved the friendship that Noah and Cade had, and even their interaction with Rabbit (I couldn’t help but like that guy!), I was intrigued to see what would happen between Noah and Kori.  Noah didn’t want to get attached to her, since he saw his realms Kori murdered before his eyes.  He loved his sister and felt that getting close to this other Kori could tarnish what he had.  But he started to notice how different the two Kori’s were.  And how much he had in common with this one.  So it was fun watching Noah struggle with his inner turmoil towards Kori, especially since he had some tender moments with her.

“…..Wait until morning to do anything stupid. Agreed?” I held out my hand to her.
She hesitated, but after a moment, took it and offered a small smile. “Agreed.” – Noah and Ash

I loved the path this story took and I loved that there were some surprise characters that I didn’t see coming. Especially the group of characters at the end of the book!  The next book is going to be so much fun!  I’m happy to say that the ending left me in a perfect holding pattern, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the final book!

PS There’s a scene that involves Noah saying lines…..oh my gosh, I laughed so hard.  It was hilariously awful lol!  And it also melted my heart too.  I loved seeing Noah’s fun, flirty side!

PPS   If you read Infinity a while back, there’s wonderful reminders about what happened sprinkled throughout the beginning of Omega.  It flowed nicely with the story, and as someone who just reread the first book, I didn’t feel bogged down or bored.  This book was just too much fun for that!

Interview:

✮Did you always know that each book would feature a different couple?

It wasn’t until i was halfway through Infinity that I made the decision. I was so taken with Noah and wanted the opportunity to explore his mind. The best way to do it was to make each book focus on one of the original group. I also wanted a chance to dig around in Dylan’s mind. His motivations for why he’s done what he’s done, his love for Ava… I really loved how they all turned out!

✮If you had to cast Noah and Ash, would you prefer them to be known or unknown actors?  Anyone in mind?

Noah has always been Miles McMillan in my mind. And Ash…I think Marie Avgeropoulos would be perfect!

✮What was your favorite scene to write in Omega?

It’s kind of a tie between a scene  involving a conversation between Noah and Kori–and a kangaroo–and a scene with Noah and Ash where they’re trading pick-up lines. Confession: I snarfed coffee writing both of them 😀

✮What is your favorite quality to write in a character?

I’m a sucker for loyalty. I love writing characters that are willing to do anything and everything for those they love.

✮Was there a character in this series you connected with more, or was easier to write than the others?

I can connect with pretty much all of them. When I write, a piece of me, no matter how small, goes into all my characters. But I think if I had to single one out, it would be Kori simply because of what she had to deal with when her mother got sick.

✮The next book, will be the last one in the trilogy.  Can you tell us anything about the final book?

I can’t say much–even though it’s killing me! I will tell you this one was the most fun to write. I love them all, but there’s a ton of new worlds in #3…and…well, you’ll see 😉
