Our fingers are in each other’s hair, and his breath is in the hollow of my neck, and I wish the world would swallow us here, whole, in this moment. And that’s when it hits me that this-this-is falling in love.

Phew!!!! What a wonderful, magical week of first love, forbidden crushes, and dreams come true. Seriously. I could like…shit rainbows right now and wouldn’t be the least bit surprised. But, in a less graphic and more polite manner, I must say-Stephanie Perkins knows how to butter you up and make you melt all the way down to your core. No, none of the books compared to AATFK (book 1), but they still all had that beautiful feeling of innocence and young love that pulls you deep into their story, waiting for that moment when they are finally together.

Josh has stopped working.
He’s staring at me. Spellbound.
“What is it?” I’m afraid to move. “What’s wrong?”
“I’ve never seen the sun shine directly through your hair before.”
“Oh.” I glance down at the glowing curtain. “It never looks the same, does it? Inside, it’s auburn. Outside, it’s more of a red.”
“No.” Josh reaches out. He softly touches one of the waves. “Red isn’t the right word. It’s not auburn or orange or copper or bronze. It’s fire. It’s like being mesmerized by the flames of a burning building. I can’t look away.”

Aaaaahhhh, my artistic heart loves that ♥

I enjoyed this last week so much because these books didn’t allow me to feel otherwise. In this story, Josh (remember Josh? From book one? St. Clair’s best friend?) and Isla get their story, and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to see that I really connected with Josh. No, not just because he was ‘attractive’ or quiet and sweet-it was also because of his artistic talent. I love to draw. It’s such a beautiful way to express yourself-I’ve been drawing since I was a little kid. You name it, I did it-painting, coloring book and crayons, drawing, tracing, whatever. Sure, I excelled at drawing more because, you know, it was always dubbed ‘too messy’ to paint in my house, lol, but I would love to have had more time to paint as a child. So, when we got to delve into Josh’s artistic side in this story, I really connected with it. It fascinated and intrigued me to hear about the brush strokes and intricate lines that Josh would spread onto the page, and that further helped me to understand him in a way I didn’t think I could from book one. He was always so quiet and in the background in book one-but now I know, with absolute certainty, that when I read book one again of this series (which is also, undoubtedly, an absolute certainty) I will have a much clearer image of him and it will really enhance the experience for me.

I can’t imagine Josh falling for someone vanilla.
Not that Josh would ever fall for me.
But I wouldn’t want to ruin any chance.
Even though I don’t have a chance.
But just in case I do.
Even though I don’t.

^^ lol. This quote is so like me it’s not even funny. ^^

In a lot of ways, I could relate to Isla. Her fade into the background quality, her insecurity….but in more ways I couldn’t relate to her. I may have entered high school just like Isla-quiet, reserved, shy…But I became the Anna. Or something like that, you know what I mean. I met some people, grew out of my shell, kept some shyness, but, ultimately, grew into myself and really started to experience life. I know this was part of Isla’s journey, but in some ways she acted like a coward. And in those moments of cowardice I grew to resent her…just a little bit! I did love her, but in those moments, I wanted to slap her. Her earlier endearments of being a cute little shy girl became her biggest downfall-it was no longer cute to me at a certain point. I do understand mistakes, though, and I do get that that was part of her journey…but I still didn’t like how she treated Josh. It wasn’t right and it made me angry.

“Your hand,” he repeats. “Give it to me.”
I extend my shaking right hand. And-in a moment that is a hundred dreams come true-Joshua Wasserstein laces his fingers through mine. A staggering shock of energy shoots straight into my veins. Straight into my heart.
“There,” he says. “I’ve been waiting a long time to do that.”
Not nearly as long as I’ve been waiting.

Now that the ugly is out of the way, I’ll say how much I adored them as a couple. Josh really came out of his shell and I enjoyed seeing him grow into the guy I never knew he could be. He was fun, spontaneous, a tad foolhardy (Okay, a lot foolhardy) and absolutely and undeniably in love with Isla. I loved that he could cry….I adored that. I am such a mean person for saying so, but, some of my favorite parts were when he either was tearing up, crying, or breaking down from the pain of something so deep and hurtful that it made him cry in guttural and truthful sobs…wow I sound SO sick right now…psychoooooo….

Movin’ on. But, in all seriousness, I love those candid moments where nothing is shaded and everything is perfectly clear…nothing is clearer than a man’s tears. Another thing I forgot to mention was the playing out of the scenes-I loved the winter ones. She made me feel those deep winter kisses and that cold, crisp air as they huddled together in intimate and romantic moments-I could practically see the clouds forming from the warmth of their mouths into the crisp, winterized air….I LOVED those parts of the story and perhaps they stuck out to me just as much as any other scene or moment did…call me a sucker, but I adore fall/winter (to an extent).

Josh pushes me against the wall. We kiss with everything we have, tasting each other, aching for each other. His lips are cracked with winter. He’s brushed his teeth recently, and his mouth is sharp and clean. His hands slide across my back and down my hips. Our kissing grows more intense, frenzied from longing. A tremor runs through my body into his, and he bursts apart from me, gasping for breath.

So anyway…I will end it all with what I seem to always circle back to-My favorite part of this book, aside from the masochistic recollections of the story from above, was when all the old characters came into the story. My heart stopped, plummeted into my stomach, and my throat clogged with butterflies. St. Clair and Anna, obviously, stole the show, and then it was adorable seeing Cricket and Lola together as well. I had a fondness for them that I didn’t realize until I saw them actually together in another setting other than the one they were given in the last story. And, to circle it all back into one big swoop-I loved these characters, I loved them all as a whole, and it was absolutely wonderful to see them all together as one, as it should be.

**Spoilers if you haven’t read Man of My Dreams (Dreams #1)**

Sometimes it only takes one decision to forever change the events in your life. Hearts are broken, trust is lost, and love can be hard to find again. Mia and Declan nearly destroyed their relationship. But in Man of My Dreams, the epilogue showed us that they finally got their happily ever after in the future. But how did they get there? This book is the bridge that leads them to that happy future. Because after the mess they both created, they have a lot of work to do. Nothing can be swept under the rug, and they are still bound to hurt one another when all of the truths come out. But step by step, we get to watch Mia and Declan become the power couple they used to be.

Grace – The makeup hides the subtle imperfections on my face, but I’m not sure there’s anything fit to mask the flaws that mar me deep within. I hush the nagging voices in my head and tell them to take a hike. I want to enjoy this day.

Back To You starts right off where Man of My Dreams ended. Declan finally won Mia back by serenading her, she said goodbye to Noah, and they are on their way to the hospital. They have been thrown back into their lives full force and they haven’t even had any time to heal. After Declan has to take another trip to Hong Kong, he decides they desperately need to have some alone time. He books them a house on the beach for a week of healing and strengthening their love.

Declan – “You don’t think it fucking killed me to watch you pretty yourself up for another man? Or to play babysitter for you while you did God knows what with him? It was torture. It was infuriating. It broke me, Mia.”

Grace used to be so strong and determined. Now her past actions continually haunt her, and she is unsure and afraid of her future. The pain is so deep that she honestly doesn’t know if they can get past it or if they will have a repeat in their future. Maybe I’m wrong for thinking this, but I am actually thankful we got to see this side of Grace. She made my heart hurt for all of the pain she inflected upon Declan. Declan threw more than his far share at her, but for some reason I was able to forgive him easier. That could have something to do with the fact that I loved him in this book! My anger at the hurt that he caused her over the years subsided and I got to see all of the wonderful sides of him. We get to see the swooning, sexy Declan in full force! His actions and words were adorable, and I thank Grace’s lucky stars that he woke up his wife and won her back.

Grace – If I’ve learned anything this year it’s that you can’t live in regret or wonder ‘what if’ without it eating a hole into the marrow of your existence. It took a lot of heartache and too many mistakes to learn that lesson. But I have to believe that the heartache portion of our story is over. This story needs to continue with a pretty song and a love stronger than steel.

This was an adorable tale about finding love again. It was sweet watching Grace and Declan rekindle their love and work through the steps to fix their marriage. Now I’m just left wondering, we will ever get to hear about Noah’s happily ever after?

Review:

***3.75 stars***

Man of My Dreams was a charming book about putting the pieces of your shattered life back together while on the path to self-discovery. This book made my heart happy, hurt and ultimately completely conflicted. It toyed with my emotions and my feelings for the characters. I kept vacillating on what a happy ending would be for Mia, and I never do that! But being bombarded with questions, doubts and memories left me swimming in a gray area where the answer to a happily ever after are not as easy to figure out as one might think. What happens when you still fantasize about the one that got away? How can you not second guess everything when the monotony of day to day life drags you down? And who doesn’t feel lost when you find out that your sexy, sultry husband has cheated on you? Welcome to Mia’s world.

And there it is…hello reality. Little girls, ass wiping and breakfast at… six forty five! “Girls, are you joking? We need to go back to bed for a little while, Mommy’s tired.” And she was just about to get off to her high school crush.

Mia’s life is extremely predictable. She is a stay at home mom and married to Declan, the man she fell in love with while at college. She is still enamored with her sweet, sexy husband but things feel off. Mia wasn’t imagining things because she learns that her husband has cheated on her. While stumbling through the after-shock of the betrayal, Mia receives an invitation to her 10 year high school reunion. All of her thoughts float back to Noah, her high school crush. She still has sexy dreams about him and has never been able to give up on the ghost that could have been her and Noah. Mia has to seize the opportunity to come face to face with Noah. He just has to be there!

But holy heart failure Batman, it’s Noah Matheson! I never got closure. Hell, I never got an opening! This is absurd. I’m not a lovesick girl anymore. I’m a twenty year old woman in love. There’s a difference. And what I have with Declan is the real thing. The crush I had for Noah, whatever I thought I felt for him is – Holy crap, he looks good!

Usually I love and hate my characters so vividly that it’s nearly impossible to change my feelings towards them. That was definitely not the case in Man of My Dreams. The words easily toyed with my emotions and manipulated my feelings towards Mia, Declan, Noah and even her best friend Grace. I was distraught and lost for the chapters that I disliked Grace. And I was shocked and dismayed that I could be switched from Team Noah to Team Declan and then back again in a blink of a chapter. The chapters continually flowed from present to the past and while that may seem dizzying, it didn’t feel that way in the least bit. I enjoyed all of the different glimpses into their lives. Just when you think you are on Team Noah we travel back to Declan being so sweet and amazing that I can’t help but sigh out loud. Honestly, it was perfectly orchestrated and it had my full attention.

Is it crazy that thinking of sex with another man makes me want to jump my husband’s bones? Something’s wrong with me.

While I enjoyed the characters, storyline and tone of the book, I struggled with the some of the spoken dialogue. Mia was feisty, determined and her internal thoughts were so much fun to listen to. There were countless times that I couldn’t hold back a smirk or a smile from her internal ranting. But it seemed as though Mia would go off in her head, collect her thoughts and what came out of her mouth was just too perfect. I wanted that fire that lived inside of her to come spewing out. A few times it did, but it wasn’t near enough. And it felt the same way for the few chapters that we were in Declan’s head.

I watch the two kids dangle off of him like monkeys as if I’m a stranger. Is that what I’ve become – an outsider to their relationship with their dad? The thought is so damn unsettling I have to grip the steering wheel, close my eyes and count to ten.

This book also contained little hidden treasures of 90’s music references. I HAD to play the songs that were brought up while I was reading that section of the book, and I normally hate listening to music while reading. I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic since Mia and I are similar in age. And I loved Mia even more when she stated that she hated Chumbawamba lol. I hated that song back in the day and I still hate it now too! Overall, Man of My Dreams was an entertaining read that touched me and had me smiling in the end.

While I adored Cricket and everything to do with Cricket, his presence wasn’t enough to salvage my love for the story. Not bad at all, but not utterly overwhelming either. This book and, admittedly, this relationship, was eclipsed in the shadow of Anna and St. Clair. The feels, the butterflies, the emotions, that perfect amount of angst….that was preserved alongside Anna and the French Kiss on my absolute favorites shelf. That’s not an easy slot to fill, and maybe I rushed in too quickly thinking all the same emotions would surface, which is wholly my fault. So, I think it’s safe to say that while I did enjoy the story, I didn’t love it. I don’t want to write a mixed review, because I just don’t feel it. I liked it enough I don’t want to tarnish it with petty words and comparisons, but I didn’t like it enough to take two hours to compile my thoughts and overabundance of quotes for a review.

My heart belongs to Anna and St. Clair, and I don’t think that will change anytime soon….or ever, for that matter.

*If the name of the book isn’t clue enough that there will be spoilers for book one, I’ll say it now: There will be spoilers from book one…*

She left for Juilliard the day after Labor Day. I drove her to the airport. She kissed me good-bye. She told me she loved me more than life itself. Then she stepped through security.
She never came back.

Don’t you just LOVE when your master plan comes together?? Like, you aren’t sure if it’s even going to work, but you sure as hell try anyway? I always take these totally random gambles where I think a second book in a series looks amazing…but I had never ever planned to read book one because it looked like everything I hate in a story, but I just have to read book one because that damn second book looks so good, I can’t resist being a part of it’s awesomeness. It almost never works in my favor, because, well, if it looks bad, and it is bad, then the second will be just as bad, most likely. Yeah. Well. This time my gamble worked out. This. Book. Was. Amazing. It was everything I hoped it would be and more.

My first impulse is not to grab her or kiss her or yell at her. I simply want to touch her cheek, still flushed from the night’s performance. I want to cut through the space that separates us, measured in feet-not miles, not continents, not years-and to take a callused finger to her face. I want to touch her to make sure it’s really her, not one of those dreams I had so often after she left when I’d see her as clear as day, be ready to kiss her or take her to me only to wake up with Mia just beyond reach.

Mia stayed in the last book. Adam’s final plea and exploration of her favorite music brought her back to our plane of existence….whether she wanted to come back or not. But what they don’t tell you at the end of story one is that she doesn’t actually stay. No, this bitch up and leaves Adam after he literally brought her back to life. She packed her shit, left for Juilliard, and never was to be seen or heard from again (okay, okay, they stayed in contact for a bit). All this leads to is Adam asking why? Why, after all they’ve been through, does she up and leave him, fracturing his heart into minuscule little pieces? He was devastated as she lay dying on the table. He was a mess. But he also made her a promise-a promise that if she just stays, he’ll let her go. He can lose her like that if he doesn’t lose her like this. If she stays. But what he didn’t know when he made that promise was how much more devastating this would be, how she would crush his soul to the point where he couldn’t breathe when she moved on. Couldn’t function. Could barely live. And here we are, in his POV, living in his head as he trudges day by day through his unhappy and overwhelming life….without the one person he will always want by his side.

People are swarming around and their gazes are lingering a little too long on me. I can’t deal with being recognized right now. I can’t deal with anything. I don’t want this. I don’t want any of this.

I absolutely adored this novel. It was beautiful. It was breathtaking. It was raw. It stole my heart and didn’t give it back until the final page, and even then I was a giddy mess. I guess I didn’t realize what all we would see Adam go through. We are three years from when this all started (Another thing I hate-large time lapses between books), but not once in the flashbacks did they feel forced or misplaced. And I suppose I wasn’t expecting to hear about other *cough* women, but that wouldn’t be realistic, would it? He does have a platinum album, eh? But I actually didn’t hate Adam at any point. His heart was is shattered, and he is coping the only way he knew and knows how-not well, even three years later.

My entire body is shaking. I’m losing it. A day might be just twenty-four hours but sometimes getting through just one seems as impossible as scaling Everest.

This book touched me on so many levels that I never expected it to. The angst, the build up, the absolute anger and hatred-it was so powerful and heart-wrenching. He still to this day can’t understand how, after two years together, she could just leave him behind. It fuels every lyric he writes and every ballad he sings. It has taken him over, even if he thinks he is past it. It broke my heart to see how broken he is, but it also connected me to him in the most emotional and powerful way. I felt his pain to the depths of my soul and in the pit of my heart, and that’s not an easy thing to do-To make his pain mine.

Whoever said that the past isn’t dead had it backward. It’s the future that’s already dead, already played out. This whole night has been a mistake. It’s not going to let me rewind. Or unmake the mistakes I’ve made. Or the promises I’ve made. Or have her back. Or have me back.

So many issues were explored in this story. Like, would it have been easier to actually stay or go? What’s holding you to earth when your whole family is no longer a part of it? Morals. Success. Life. Love. Jealousy. And my favorite of all-second chances. When they have a ‘chance’ encounter, and decide to hang out for the rest of the night before they leave for their respective tours, it is a chance to heal. To mend, to have closure. But as the night dwindles away and it’s time for goodbye, will what needs to be said actually be spoken aloud? Or will they part ways again never really knowing how the other feels? What happened? And will they actually be able to say a final goodbye this time?

Letting go. Everyone talks about it like it’s the easiest thing. Unfurl your fingers one by one until your hand is open. But my hand has been clenched into a fist for three years now; it’s frozen shut. All of me is frozen shut. And about to shut down completely.

Mia was not a favorite of mine in book one-Anyone who read my review knew that. She was whiney, petulant, difficult, and altogether a little drab. I didn’t understand why Adam loved her, so. But, and I never thought I’d say this, I loved her in this one. She was so vibrant, full of life, funny, sweet, charismatic, down-to-earth, funny….loveable. I understood why Adam loved loves her. I really connected with her in ways I never thought possible, but I still didn’t like what happened to them. I think it was cruel. It was tragic. I know she was going through things, but there was no reason for her to handle it as she did….and I think she knows that. So I forgive her lol.

My favorite part-(view spoiler) Just. A-dor-a-ble.

Wow. Just…wow. I don’t know really what else to touch on other than how much this story out-shined the first. Maybe it was being in his head, maybe it was just the amount of hurt, betrayal, lost love, angst-but whatever it was, I loved it. I hate that there was a book in front of this, because it totally tarnished recommending this one. Not everyone is a psycho who will read a book they don’t want to just to get to the second, but, hey, it worked out so well, ya know?? His flashbacks had so much more impact than Mia’s and they touched me so deeply. I really got to see the good side of Mia and why he fell in love with her. And, for me, that’s more than enough, and, in fact, all I ever wanted in the first place.

But I’d do it again. I know that now. I’d make that promise a thousand times over and lose her a thousand times over to have heard her play last night or to see her in the morning sunlight. Or even without that. Just to know that she’s somewhere out there. Alive.
