Synopsis:

A thief. An officer. A guardian.

Three strangers, one shared destiny . . .

When the Last Days came, the planet of Laterre promised hope. A new life for a wealthy French family and their descendants. But five hundred years later, it’s now a place where an extravagant elite class reigns supreme; where the clouds hide the stars and the poor starve in the streets; where a rebel group, long thought dead, is resurfacing.

Whispers of revolution have begun—a revolution that hinges on three unlikely heroes…

Chatine is a street-savvy thief who will do anything to escape the brutal Regime, including spy on Marcellus, the grandson of the most powerful man on the planet.

Marcellus is an officer—and the son of a renowned traitor. In training to take command of the military, Marcellus begins to doubt the government he’s vowed to serve when his father dies and leaves behind a cryptic message that only one person can read: a girl named Alouette.

Alouette is living in an underground refuge, where she guards and protects the last surviving library on the planet. But a shocking murder will bring Alouette to the surface for the first time in twelve years…and plunge Laterre into chaos.

All three have a role to play in a dangerous game of revolution—and together they will shape the future of a planet.

Power, romance, and destiny collide in this sweeping reimagining of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, Les Misérables.

Review

The rich traded good and extravagances.
While the poor traded dreams and ideas.

From The Chronicles of the Sisterhood
Volume 12, Chapter 1

When I first came across this book, I wasn’t so much drawn in by the fact that it was a Les Mis retelling. It really was as simple as me seeing “where she guards and protects the last surviving library on the planet” in the synopsis. Little did I know, that was going to be one of the last things on my mind after finishing this book.

I don’t know how many people are going to pick this up because they love Les Mis. I personally have only seen the movie from 2012 once so before getting into this I read a synopsis of the original book by Victor Hugo to refresh my memory. That probably isn’t necessary—in fact, I almost don’t think you should. If anything, it caused me more stress because I was too wrapped up in worrying about if Chatine was going to die like her counterpart does in the book. Also, it almost took some of the suspense out of several parts because you can guess what might happen based on what happened in Les Mis. But let’s just forget about the retelling aspect of this for a moment.

Let’s just focus on what this book is. In short, it’s a book about the separation between the rich and the poor on a planet that has formed after the destruction of the First World (Earth). It’s a story about rebellion. It’s a story about spending your whole life thinking one thing is true because of what you’ve learned from your family, only to have that life flipped on its head after discovering there’s more to the story than you ever could have imagined.

Even though I knew this story was going to be about rebellion, I wasn’t prepared for how dark it was going to be. How visceral some of the emotions that this book elicits might be. Ever since I’ve become a mom I have felt things a lot more intensely. So reading about an infant death, poor, starving people that have to accept their lot in life, parental abuse, etc. really got to me. It made the book more real to me. Made the rebellion more gut-wrenching.

If I haven’t already made it apparent, these ladies can write. I truly was sucked in while reading. The characters were great. It was easy to love them, to hate them, to desperately root for them. There is *kind of* a love triangle that I feel like we might see play out more in the next book(s). (Personally I’m rooting for Chatine, lol she deserves a happy ending, damn.) And that’s actually where I pray things deviate from Les Mis. I don’t want to know who dies and who ends up together based on the original book. I want to be surprised in this next book PLEASE.

The only reason I’m not giving this a full five stars is because there were parts where I felt it drag a bit. I mean I’m not quite complaining about the length? There was a lot of world building and plot to build up so it’s not like it could have been much shorter…I honestly can’t even quite put my finger on it. I just wasn’t feeling a half star’s worth of the book. Regardless, I am dying to see how EVERYTHING plays out in the next book. Definitely give this one a shot!

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Simon Pulse for allowing me to read an eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Her growing attraction for Luc will lead her deeper and deeper into a world she'd only heard about, a world where everything she thought she knew will be turned on its head...

Review:

The Darkest Star was breathtakingly emotional!  It was swoon worthy and filled with action, banter, love, friendships, lies and deceit.  This book pulled me right in from the start and held me in its clutches till that last page.  I was beyond lost to the world around me and I couldn’t be happier because this was my most anticipated book of the year.  It more than lived up to my expectations.  Seriously. My mind was blown and I loved every single tiny detail.  I’m happy to say that The Darkest Star is my favorite book of the year!

How in the world did I end up here? What series of really bad life choices had I made that led me to this very moment?

While you don’t have to read The Lux Series first, because Jennifer does an amazing job of catching you up, I highly recommend you do.  This book took place a few years after The Lux Series ended and I have to confess that I literally screamed out loud every single time we saw or heard about a character from the past.  I loved the familiarity of it all, but at the same time, so many things were different. It was now known that aliens lived among humans, a percentage of the population was lost in the war and there were new laws and regulations put in place for the aliens that lived among us.  I was fascinated seeing what the world now looked like.

“You’re still so incredibly stubborn.”
“You . . . don’t know me,” I gritted out.

I had no clue how I would feel towards Evie, aka Evelyn Dasher.  Her father played a horrific role in The Lux Series and I hated him with a passion.  But right from that first page, I loved Evie.  She was just so relatable, logical, sweet, kind and had the hugest heart ever.  I was so happy that I also liked her friends and her mom. And just a few pages into the story, Evie found herself going with a friend to a club.  Yet it turned into so much more than she could have imagined. Not only did she meet Luc, but he claimed to know her. Even though she had no clue who he was.  And so began the journey of unraveling the truths and the lies and I loved every minute of it!

“You tried to kidnap me, Luc.”
“Hmm,” he murmured. “That means I like you.”
I arched a brow. “Okay. That’s messed up on about a thousand different levels.”
“Probably. I don’t people well.”
“Gee, really,” I replied dryly.

Luc was EVERYTHING!  I can’t wait for you to meet him all grown up.  Yes his people skills could still be super awkward, but he was hilarious, sigh worthy and charming without even trying.  My heart was already broken for him, because of his past and the way he was raised.  But he had so much light in him. He made me laugh, sigh and when I started to see how much he protected those he cared for, it was astounding.  You guys, Luc was the ultimate book boyfriend.  While I never ever thought I would say this, because Daemon has been my #1 bbf for the last four years, Luc not only challenged him but he has grabbed first place.  I feel so disloyal saying that, but Luc was beyond amazing. And I can see countless others falling for his charm too.

Our stares connected , and the effect was instantaneous. Everything around us faded, and there was just us, and this . . . this sensation of falling. I couldn’t look away as this feeling surfaced, rushing to the top.
I’ve been here before.
My breath caught as a wave of tight shivers rippled over my skin. That thought didn’t make sense. I hadn’t been here with him before.

When Evie and Luc were together, they were completely entertaining.  I loved that Evie didn’t just fall for Luc. The boy definitely drove her crazy at times lol.  But there was this amazing chemistry and pull between them.  Between that and their banter, I always felt like Evie and Luc’s interactions were smile inducing.  And I was left wanting to know what was going to happen between them next.

Every part of my body was aware of his. The strength in his hand, the hardness of his thigh, and the steady dancing of his breath, and we were lying together like we’d done this a thousand times.

There is so much I’m not even touching on, like the side characters I adored and the mysteries that were fun to figure out.  But I don’t want to give anything away. Just know that The Darkest Star was action packed while also having so many heart-felt moments, it was such an easy book to love.  And rest assured, the book stopped at the perfect spot. While we learned some answers, there was still so much of the story we need to hear. And I for one can’t wait to read the next book!  Especially since I spent those last few pages with tears in my eyes and with the hugest smile ever. So yes, I definitely recommend The Darkest Star and if you’re a fan of The Lux Series, this is a must read!

I wanted more than kissing. I wanted—
“What do you want?” he asked, his gaze holding mine.
“You,” I whispered, cheeks burning.
“You have me.” His thumb dragged along my lower lip. “You’ve always had me. Always.”

PS I would LOVE to read Luc’s POV of this book!  If that was ever an option I’d pre-order that book faster than I could blink!

His shirt read NO DRAMA LLAMA. That shirt was a lie. This boy was all about the drama llama.

PPS Luc’s shirts were all kinds of awesome!  I looked forward to seeing what he was going to wear next!

Other favorite quotes I had to include……..

That was what I wanted at some point in my life, for someone to look at me like I looked at tacos.

“Sit,” Luc said, and that one word was spoken in the kind of voice that probably left a trail of really bad decisions in its wake.
I sat.
 ✮✩✮
Groaning, I jabbed my fist into his lower back and was rewarded with another grunt. “I’m going to hurt you!”
Luc chuckled.
He actually
chuckled as he walked into a room. I swore to God and the Holy Ghost, I was going to ninja kick him in the face.
 ✮✩✮
“Then why didn’t you give it to me afterward?” I demanded.
A smirk formed. “Well, I was just messing with you then.”
“Oh my God.” I shook my head, glancing over at Daemon. “Are you hearing this?”
He held up his hand. “I’m just an innocent, enraptured viewer of this.”
A lot of help he was.
 ✮✩✮
“I kinda like the arm-grabbing thing,” he replied, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “Very dominant of you. Maybe I’m the submissive type in, you know, the—”
“Shut up,” I hissed. “Why are you here?”
“How can I shut up and answer your question at the same time?”
I shot him a death glare. “Luc.”

Synopsis:

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can't stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won't just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen...

Review:

Oblivion was gripping, emotional and I loved every minute of it!  So when I started reading that very first page I found myself crying.  I was so happy to be back in a world with characters that I absolutely loved with my whole heart.  Four years later and the Lux Series is still my favorite series and Daemon Black still holds the number one spot as my favorite book boyfriend ever.  So the fact that we got to hear the first three Lux books in Daemon Black’s voice?!  It was priceless.  Oblivion was completely perfect and this book is for everyone out there that loved The Lux Series!

“Why…?” Her voice cracked. “Why do you hate me so much?”
My control slipped for a moment, and I flinched. I didn’t hate her. God, I wished I did, but I didn’t, and seeing the tears building in her eyes killed me.

From the moment Daemon saw Katy, I had the hugest grin on my face.  No matter how hard he tried to not like or be around her, it was all so futile.  He constantly found himself drawn to her.  And I loved listening to his internal struggle, because Dawson was a constant reminder of why he shouldn’t be around Katy.  But right from the start of the book we saw what a huge heart Daemon had.  He was such a good guy.  There was no guessing his motives or what he was thinking, like when I first read Obsidian.  This time around it was effortless to fall in love with him within those first few pages.

From the very first time I’d seen her standing on my porch—the first argument, the first time she called me a douche, and from the very first time I realized how strong and brave she truly was, I’d been attracted to her. I’d wanted her.

I loved that Oblivion was smile inducing.  From getting to hear the little lies Daemon made up, just so he could hang around Katy.  To seeing how much he enjoyed causing their fights or goading her on, I couldn’t help myself, I kept laughing out loud.  Daemon was hilarious without even trying.  Especially since he was so inappropriate at times.  Yeahhhhhh I know Daemon could be the biggest douche on the planet, but this time we got to hear his thoughts and see how he felt during each of those moments.  That made a world of a difference for understanding why he did and said the things he did.

“Kitten,” I repeated. “You don’t get to do that and then stop. That’s not how it works. Not when you’re mine.” I backed up until I hit the wall. Sliding down, I pulled her onto my lap, her knees on either side of my hips. “And you’re mine.”

One of my favorite thing about this book is that there were so many moments and conversations that were not in the first three Lux books.  We got to see what Daemon was up to, when he wasn’t around Katy.  We also got to be privy to a lot of conversations just between Daemon and Dee or Daemon and the other Luxen.  I treasured every single one of them because they filled in so much of the story.  Between the new scenes, and being able to hear Daemon’s brutally honest thoughts, it made this book feel fresh and new.  But at the same time it still had so much of what made me fall in love with The Lux Series to begin with.

Air punched out of my lungs. I held her tight, and I knew right then I would burn down the whole universe for her if I had to. I would do anything to keep her safe. Kill. Heal. Die. Anything. Because she was my everything.

In case you can’t tell, Oblivion was everything!  Daemon was sigh worthy, lust worthy and dream worthy.  Watching Katy slowly sneak into his head and heart, oh, each moment was beautiful.  So by the time I got to the end of these three books, I found myself loving Daemon and Katy even more.  I didn’t even know that was possible.  I still found myself fiercely hated Blake, I eventually liked Ash and Adam again, I wanted to steal Dee as my new bff and surprisingly I even forgot some of the backstabbing and perilous moments that happened in the Obsidian, Onyx and Opal *gasp*.  There were so many scenes that had me smiling, laughing, crying and I absolutely loved every single thing about this book!  I hope everyone out there that loved The Lux Series picks this book up too.  It was beyond worth it!

Other Favorite Quotes:
And there it was. The spark in her eyes was a blazing fire now, and I was fighting a full-on grin. Damn, she wasn’t just cute anymore. She was much, much more, and my stomach sank.

********************

Huh. Perhaps I was a bit too much of a dick the first two times I talked to her. Good thing she didn’t know I briefly considered burning her house down.

********************

Kat wasn’t cute. She wasn’t even sexy. She was beautiful—absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Not that I hadn’t noticed that before, but now? Now was something entirely different.

********************

This girl could slay me if I let her.

********************

By the time we hit Interstate 81, I wanted to kick Blake out of the damn car, tie him to the middle of the road, and run him over several times. At least fifty times. Maybe fifty-one.

Synopsis:

Sera has no memory of her life before. Before captivity, before experiments, before the only lifeline she had was the voice of a boy in the cell next to hers. Before G.

G wishes he could forget everything before Sera brought him back to life. Forget his memories as a ruthless mercenary on an alternate version of Earth. Forget that he was part of an experiment simply known as Alpha.

Now on the run from their captors and in need of an antidote to save his life, G and Sera’s clock is ticking. And they’ll have to gamble everything on the bond they forged in captivity if they want to survive.

Review:

Alpha was the final book in The Infinity Division Trilogy and it ended with a bang!  I loved watching all the loose ends get tied up and those I’ve come to care for get their happily ever afters. But it was a rough road get there.  Heartache, redemption, sacrifice, lies and love filled the pages and at times everything seemed so unsure in this parallel dimension story.  So if you’re interested in giving this series a try you definitely have to go back to book one, Infinity. Yes each book is about a different couple, but the stories and threads are all linked together. It was so much fun seeing it all come full circle and there’s a moment that takes us back to the beginning of this series, awww loved it!!  So to finish up this trilogy, here are some of my favorite aspects:

“Dylan, everyone on every earth is breaking at some point or another.” I looked him dead in the eye. “Bad things happen to all of us. Horrible, life-altering things. It’s how we choose to deal with them that defines us.” – Sera

✮ Everlasting Love:

“I’m not going to kiss you again.” The statement was crystal clear; it was the delivery that lacked conviction. “I’m poison. Inside and out.”
“Then poison me,” I said. I brushed my lips to his again, this time slightly harder. He stayed absolutely still. I pulled away. “Do it so that I can show you I won’t break. I’m not fragile, G. I’m made of steel. You told me that, remember? I’m a fighter, so let me fight for you.”

I loved the idea that no matter what dimension you were in, there were always the constants in your life.  And within those constants was that one true love. I loved KCade and Kori, then Noah and Ash and finally I got to swoon for G and Sera.  We’ve known different versions of them on other dimensions and their true names are Dylan and Ava. But G and Sera faced the biggest hurdles and struggles yet.  And as if that wasnt enough, they had Dylan after them, in different ways. But regardless of everything they were put through, their love stood strong and not only fought the test of time but dimensions too.

✮ Friendships That Span The Dimensions:

“G, take a deep breath. We’re here to help you.” Kori… She came around to stand in front of me . Her gaze flickered to something on my right, then back to me. “We’re your friends.”
Someone beyond my field of vision snorted. Had to be Noah. “Friends? Not sure I’d go
that far,” he said. “But we won’t set you on fire or anything.”
There was an echoing
thwap—probably from Ash smacking the shit out of him— and a hiss.

I loved how this group of six, could be found in almost every dimension.  Their dynamic was a ton of fun and added so much to this series.  So it made my heart happy that we seemed to gather the best of all of their selves into this rag tag kinda group.  When they were together it definitely wasn’t easy, and not everyone was going to end up bffs, but still, it was so entertaining to watch them together. In this book I adored watching what happened between G and Cade.  G was another Dylan, so the two of them were brothers in a sense, and I loved some of the moments they had together.

✮ Action!:

I screamed at night over the things Cora had done to me, but Dylan was right. The devil was standing at my back.
And he had Dylan’s face. – Sera

There was a ton of action and this book had that go, go, go feeling.  But there was also moments where we got to breathe.  Thank goodness because we had Cora after Sera and Ash, Dylan was after so much I can’t even talk about, G and Cade were trying to save Sera and then there’s also the projects we learned about in book 2.  Oh my gosh, there was a lot going on. I’m happy I quickly skimmed some of my highlights from book 2, Omega, so that way I knew exactly where I stood before stepping into this book. BUT I never once felt lost or confused. The story and characters were extremely easy to follow and it made Alpha fly by super fast!

✮ That Ending:

She was the sun in my world, and I was simply a planet caught in her gravitational pull, helpless. Without her light, I would wither and die. – G

If you adore happily ever afters, then you’re going love the ending to this series.  We got to see what happened and where their lives would lead with so many of our favorites.  Did everyone get a HEA? Ummmm no lol. But that was bound to be expected and all I can say is that I’m ecstatic with how many epilogues we got at the back of the book.

“She was that for me,” Dylan said. He grinned, and for the first time since I’d met him, it was a genuine smile. “She was the only one who saw me. If you’re really that for him, don’t let go, because without you… Without you, he’ll just become me.”

I had a lot of fun reading this trilogy.  It was unlike a lot of other books I have read but it had that chemistry and tension that I always crave when I pick up a book. So if you adore books that have complicated friendships and love interests, solid characters that stand out and a fun science fiction element then you should give this series a try.  I will definitely be picking up other books by this author!

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Stella Ainsley wants just one thing: to go somewhere—anywhere—else. Her home is a floundering spaceship that offers few prospects, having been orbiting an ice-encased Earth for two hundred years. When a private ship hires her as a governess, Stella jumps at the chance. The captain of the Rochester, nineteen-year-old Hugo Fairfax, is notorious throughout the fleet for being a moody recluse and a drunk. But with Stella he’s kind.

But the Rochester harbors secrets: Stella is certain someone is trying to kill Hugo, and the more she discovers, the more questions she has about his role in a conspiracy threatening the fleet.

**Many thanks to HMH Books for Young Readers for sending me an ARC. This in no way influenced my review-my opinions are my own**

This is one of those times where I emailed the publisher and didn’t expect any response-and I didn’t get one. Oh well, right? But then, one night when I had been having a bad day, I came home to the most exciting and unexpected package-this beauty of an arc. I knew I had to read it right away-and I’m so glad I did.

I just loved the two main characters so much. Especially, as many will probably agree, the captain. Hugo was absolutely breathtakingly adorable. Uncertain of himself, lonely, determined not to make the wrong decisions…but with a heart of gold and a quirky personality.

When Stella gets the job on his ship, he immediately has a connection to her. They begin to get closer, to hang out at their standing ‘reading appointments’ every night, and begin to form a bond that starts to ease the ache that being the captain of a ship brings.

I’ll admit he broke my heart quite a few times. You could tell when they were hanging out he was desperate for someone he could talk to, relate to, be friends with…she would try to read and he’d continue talking to her and..agh those were just my favorite parts. Adorable.

And I enjoyed the turmoil that extra guests on the ship brought-I LIKE jealousy. It’s just the BEST relationship jump starter [when it comes to books]. Come on now, I’m not THAT crazy-it may work in real life, but I certainly don’t go looking for it nor do I condone it.

But here I am…just searching for more to say past that. This book was pleasant, it was well-written, even (my biggest fear when it comes to asking for ARCs, because I like to know what I’m putting my neck on the line for). And here-I don’t regret asking for this book, I really don’t. But I do feel bad not just adoring it like I’ve seen-because I know that, likely, it’s just a matter of taste.

This book is a fun play on Jane Eyre. And it’s set in space. Now. See. I’m neither a fan of classical books, mostly Jane Austen, nor do I read many space books. Did this work for me? It did. I really devoured it. But did I obsess over it, pine for night time when I could curl up under the covers and read it? Did I think about it all day every day just counting down the minutes until I could be reconnected with it again? The answer, sad as it may be, is no.

I’m beginning to understand that perhaps I’m not a huge fan of books set in space-only a few really stand out to me as unforgettable…and, unfortunately, this isn’t one of them. I really really enjoyed it-that’s not a lie. But, like in EVERY book I read, when I needed a HARD push, a big, dramatic event that gets larger and larger as it chugs along, this book stayed relatively even.

Which really is a good thing, honestly-especially to most people. So it’s through no fault of the author or, if I’m speaking in a creepy way, any of the characters-it’s me. I just wanted a huge eruption and a certain end…and it didn’t go that way. *shrugs* What can I say? I’m picky.

And, perhaps, I wanted a denser writing style. For a story that was somewhat dark (well..it was very dark), the writing seemed light. Like maybe there should have been more of an edge, a sharper tone at times where, instead, there was a soft, pillowy feeling and the lack of an implication that anything TOO bad could happen. I can’t explain what I mean-I can’t. It was expertly written, to be sure. No errors to be found. Yet…I wanted or needed more, and I’m not sure what that means.

The addicting and heart-wrenching moments far outweighed the underwhelming, yet I find myself drawn to remembering the things that didn’t work for me. Maybe I wanted to love this [more] too much. Maybe I had too high of expectations because everyone else is loving it-and, again, maybe I’m just spoiled, because I had a lot of fun reading it and I really liked Hugo. I thought about him, separate from the book, frequently. But, without him, this book wouldn’t have been much to me-and that’s not really a good thing, is it?
