red rising pierce brownSynopsis: Pierce Brown’s relentlessly entertaining debut channels the excitement of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power.  He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

We are so grateful to Del Rey – Penguin Random House for offering this wonderful surprise and allowing us to help giveaway one of our favorite books! We are so beyond excited to spread the love of one of our (or at least MY) favorite series ever!If you want to know more about Red Rising or the Red Rising Trilogy, then click on the book covers to go to Amazon or you can read my 5 Star review for each book!

Review:

“We may fight again, Sentinel. We may rail at each other until the sun breaches the sky. But the truth is this. I love you. And I found you once, that April night. I will always look for you, and I will always find you.”

If you were to ask any one of my friends, they’d tell you just how much this series holds my heart. It’s not merely the genre or the author, but a deep-rooted connection to these characters. From book one on I’ve been an avid and invested fan-From the first eyebrow raise and swivel of a chair, Ethan stole my heart. It was insta-love at it’s finest…and oh boy do I hate insta-love. What a hypocrite I am.

Throughout the series there have been many ups and downs, in-betweens, and tremendous character growth. Ethan and Merit have been through it all-with and without each other. Stubborn and not to be trifled with, they make an intimidating team. But with each new book, there are many challenges to face, and though they are close to the end, it seems trouble still has a way of finding them.

“Do you remember, Sentinel, the first words you ever said to me?”
I grimaced. “No. But I bet they were rude.

I’d be lying if I said this was my favorite installment….It would also be a gross overstatement to say I didn’t like it. Literally so much has happened to these two people, this house, and all their friends that it’s about that time where things start to get complicated and begin to circle to a close. I think I know where this author is leading….and I’m more than okay with it. And speaking of such things..

OH-EM-GEE. I just…I can’t….I mean…FINALLY. I am beyond words excited for a certain development that might have finally happened! For 12 books I have waited and waited and waited on a baited breath…to no avail. Ms. Neill is the tease of all teases, messing with my heart at each and every turn. Once again I found myself losing breath with every smoldering look, touch, and caress my boy gave Merit, and I became an unintelligible fangirl every time his name was mentioned. As one of my top guys, I will never forget this man…he just exceeds any and every expectation in each installment, putting himself in danger just to keep the girl he loves safe. I will NEVER get tired of my man putting his life on the line for his girl….he will always own me in ways I don’t even understand. Just…sighs all around.

He formed a box with his fingers. “I believe it has cars.”
I just shook my head. “How have you lived here so long without a ride on the Ferris Wheel?”
“I’m a vampire,” he said, as if that was the obvious explanation.
I just sighed.

So, you know, while I wish more things would have transpired (patient I am not), I was more than happy with the direction this story was going. I’m a greedy greedy Ethan whore, him being my only vampire book boyfriend, so is it really that bad that I wanted just a little MORE?? I mean, that’s hardly a crime. It says so much that I have stuck with this series through thick and thin, following this wonderful author on her journey to make Ethan and Merit’s lives as complicated as possible. I don’t read long series-AT ALL-so it really is a big deal I’ve come this far. Chloe Neill’s writing and hilarious banter between characters remains some of my favorite-ever-and now I cannot wait to see how the story concludes. I will miss my dear Ethan so so much….but if his starry eyed look for Merit in this installment is any indication, I know I’m in for a spectacular treat next year. I just hope I can wait. Ugh.

**************************

Interview:

Chloe Neill has come up with a completely fun twist on the interviewing process, allowing access into the mind of the Head of Cadogan House himself-Ethan!!! Take a look at this ……

1. When you saw Merit for the first time, what was the first thing that crossed your mind?

That she was lovely. And that she was destined for more than even she knew.

2. So, you’ve only ever had consorts…what made Merit different? What makes her so special?

She is entirely unlike any vampire I’d ever met before. So strong, so stubborn, and so very human. She has been a delightful challenge. An ally and an opponent in very unexpected ways.

3. You have been through Hell and back-of that we are all certain-But this makes me wonder…What is your greatest
fear?

I’ve no fondness for aspen stakes or sunlight. But the only thing I fear is the possibility of losing Merit. She has become the better half of me.

4. Throughout your very long life, you’ve lost a lot of people. I’m sure you miss them every day. If you could bring one
person back…who would it be?

My sisters. Even so many years in the past, I still miss them.

Words cannot express how much I love my Ethan and Merit (see any and all of my fangirly reviews for this series). They have stolen a large chunk of my heart and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to get it back-or if I even want to. I am so excited to be hosting this wonderful blog tour centering on a wonderful set of characters that have a personality as big as, well, 12 books. If you haven’t gotten to try this series out, I suggest you pick up the first story, Some Girls Bite, where Ethan and Merit meet for the first time. Much love and thanks to Chloe Neill for letting our blog join this wonderful event. 🙂

Synopsis:

Perfect for fans of Alice Clayton and Emma Chase, Lauren Layne’s Oxford series heats up in this story of forbidden desire as a brooding jock hoping for a comeback falls for a woman who’s strictly off-limits.

A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.

Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

Review:

I Wish You Were Mine was fun, sexy, and sweet with its to die for males and females that I would love to have as my friends.  This is part of The Oxford Series, a spin-off from The Stiletto Series, and all of these stories have made me feel something I haven’t felt in years.  You see, my favorite show ever is Friends…of course I have the DVDs, the game, and can quote for hours, but these two series are the first time since Friends has ended that I’ve felt back in a world somewhat similar to theirs.  Because I adore this group!  Their friendships are heartwarming, their love lives are emotional and sigh worthy, and each time I find myself being pulled in by their joy, heartache, and laughter!

This time we got to meet Jackson Burke, Oxford’s newest team member at the country’s leading men’s magazine.  His world was flipped upside down after a horrific car accident.  He went from a married quarterback in Texas, to a single fitness editor in New York.  But before you jump into his life as it is now, the first chapter gives you a glance back at 8 years ago.  Where he had stepped away from his own wedding to talk to Molly, his wife’s younger sister.  Going into this book I was a little squeamish.  Not only because of the synopsis, but also because in that first chapter Molly admitted to herself that she had fallen for her sister’s husband.  Eeks!  I didn’t think I’d be ok with watching them forge into the unknown…..or so I thought, because I became their biggest cheerleader.

Lauren Layne has perfected the tortured male with Jackson.  And I love tortured males!  Jackson was charming and seductive, but also utterly lonely and completely unsure of himself in his new life.  His inner turmoil about what happened to him created little tears in my heart.  He was so hard on himself for something he had no control over.  But then, he also became his own worst enemy at times with Molly.  Molly who was always his friend and confident.  And even though there was a spark between them, he refused to allow himself happiness with her since Molly is his ex’s sister.

Oh, I adored Molly!  And while I felt her inner struggle over not wanting to betray her older sister, since she wanted her ex, I also wanted to shake some sense into her.  I don’t want to say why, because of spoilers.  But just know that while at first I was against Jackson and Molly being together, those feelings went flying out the window.  Like sailing so far away, that they were long forgotten and irrelevant.

I Wish You Were Mine was a forbidden love story that made me so giddy and happy.  Not only because it had the perfect balance of banter and sexual tension, but also since it had so many of the people from Stiletto that I love!  And I have to say that while I can’t wait for Lincoln’s story, I’m so glad his book wasn’t in this books place.  I loved watching the slow reveal of learning who Lincoln truly is, since there are moments in this story where you can see beyond his facade.  It left me even more excited for his book, which is next in line.  So yes, this was another Lauren Layne win in my eyes, and I can’t wait to read her next release!

Excerpt:

[scroll-box]“I thought I might find you out here,” he said quietly as he took a sip of his own champagne.

Mollie snuck a look out of the corner of her eye. He’d come looking for her? She hadn’t thought anyone had noticed she’d slipped away.

“I messed up the toast,” she said quietly.

“Nah,” he said, stretching his long legs out in front of him and slouching down a bit to get comfortable. “Just think how many people you educated on the mating ritual of parasitic worms.  They should be thanking you.”

Mollie groaned. “It was supposed to be romantic. I did a paper about them for my systematics and biotics diversity final. They’re unusual because they’re bonded for life. Most organisms sleep around or, you know, the male dies after mating—”

Jackson winced, and Mollie wished she could wither and die just like a male bee.

Mollie knew she had lots of useless trivia in her head, but she didn’t normally go spouting it out like this. Not that she was a smooth talker or anything, but she was usually pretty quiet and normal, if a bit nerdy.

But tonight she felt . . . off. Starting with the fact that the dress Madison had picked for her was the exact color of Mollie’s complexion, so she looked like a mole rat. And then there was the fact that she’d tripped a bit as she’d been going down the aisle, courtesy of the five-inch stilettos her sister had insisted on.

Add in an awkward maid-of-honor speech where she’d gone on for a good five minutes about Schistosoma mansoni worms and how they mated for life, just like the bride and groom, and . . . oh God. Why had nobody stopped her?

Mollie scrunched down on the bench with a moan as she took a sip of champagne.

“Madison’s going to kill me.”

Madison was in a mood anyway. She’d been a bridezilla from the moment Jackson had put a ring on it, but Mollie had figured when the actual day came around, her sister would relax.

Nope.

She’d been pissed about the flowers being ivory instead of true white to match her dress.  Had bitched about the fact that Lily, one of her bridesmaids, had styled her hair in a way that was too close to the bride’s style.

Then Madison had vented about how the bracelet Jackson’s mother had shyly presented as Maddie’s “something old” was dumpy.

That one had gotten under Mollie’s skin. Mrs. Burke was the closest thing to a mother that either of them had. Their own mother had died of an overdose years ago, and Mollie would have given a kidney to have a surrogate as lovely and kind as Jackson’s mom.

“Maddie won’t kill you,” Jackson said, putting an arm around the back of the park bench and smiling down at her. “She loves you, even if she doesn’t get your whole triple-major, science-camp vibe.”

Mollie withheld a snort. That was an understatement. She loved her sister, but the closest Madison ever got to science was her monthly chemical peel.

Still, Mollie felt a fierce need to make sure that Jackson Burke knew she was an adult. “I’m twenty. I do not go to science camp.”

He lifted an eyebrow, and Mollie pointed her champagne flute at him. “Okay, I used to go to science camp. But I’m not the one who used the word ‘lactation’ in relation to a mermaid.”

“Hey, you’re not the only one who took bio in college.”

“But you were a communications major. Journalism,” she said.

He gave her a surprised look, and Mollie looked away, mentally kicking herself. That was exactly what Jackson Burke didn’t need—another groupie stalker.

She snuck another glance and saw that he’d slumped even farther, matching her own crappy posture, and Mollie was surprised to see that he looked . . . exhausted.

“Are you okay?” she asked. Because she couldn’t not ask. Not after she’d seen the weariness around his eyes, the slight tension in his shoulders.

Jackson turned his head so their eyes locked and he frowned before returning his attention to the mermaid. “Nobody ever asks me that.”

Her heart squeezed at the lost note in his voice. It was strange to think of someone as big and important as Jackson Burke being lonely, but somehow . . . somehow she knew he was.

Even here, among all these people, he was somehow alone. Apart.

Like her.[/scroll-box]

Exclusive Excerpt:

[scroll-box]Hot showers, beds that conform to my body, soft clothes, public transportation — there’s a shitload of stuff to love about the Union, but by far my favorite is the beach. I never tire of watching the ocean, struggling to understand it, the way it seems to go on forever. Standing here, feeling the coarse sand beneath my feet and the cool mist on exposed skin, helps me think.

Like an idiot, I figured nothing else mattered as long as Evan and I were together, but every damn thing matters. It’s not safe to stay here, and it’s not safe to return to the Ruins. Not that she’d even agree to that. Hell, I don’t know what she wants. We barely talk and I know that’s mostly on me. I can’t pretend her sleeping with that douche doesn’t piss me off. I want to punch something every time I see him, which is pretty much every fucking day.

“Figured I’d find you here,” Rainey’s raspy voice comes from behind me.

I grit my teeth and turn to face her. “Hey.”

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

“Yeah. Never thought I’d see the ocean, now I can’t seem to leave.”

She’s quiet for a few moments, staring out at the crashing waves. I’ve stared at them for plenty of hours myself, now I stare at her. She’s pretty, in a rough sort of way. The scar running from her ear to her jaw only enhances her looks. But she’s not someone you’d ever want to mess with.

“Quit staring at me.”

I turn back to the water. “Sorry.”

“Colin went with her. You know, in case you were wondering.”

“Not really.” I wasn’t, only because I chose not to think about it. But if it’d been Bryce, I’d have needed to pound something.

“Are you going to punish her forever?”

Dragging my gaze away from the surf, I glare at her. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Her eyebrows go up. “Really? You two were this sappy sweet, gag-inducing couple until her ex showed up. Now you’re always in a foul mood, and you barely talk to the girl you supposedly gave up everything to follow.”

“Fine, I don’t like the guy, never have. Why the hell is he here again?”

“We need everyone if we have any hope of doing what you’re planning. We can’t send him packing because he got naked and horizontal with your girl.”

If Rainey wasn’t a girl, I’d have no problem decking her, but she is, so I walk down to the water to get away from her.

Whatever went on between Evan and the douchebag was before she joined the Uprising, but it’s more than that. It’s everything. She had no idea what she was getting herself into and no plan to get out. She nearly got herself killed.

She’s impulsive and reckless, and I don’t know if I can deal with that.[/scroll-box]

Exclusive Excerpt:

[scroll-box]The unevenly paved Mexico streets are as jacked up as any out in the Ruins. Rainey and I make our way past colorful buildings with chipping paint and rusted railings surrounding precarious balconies. But at least the ground isn’t moving.

“You’re looking a little less ripe, there, Cyrus,” Rainey says with her raspy voice.

I cut my eyes to her, but don’t respond. I’ve never been as sick in my life as I was on that boat. All I want to do is get to a hotel and lie down. Aside from the sea sickness, we had an uneventful trip. No one paid any attention to us when we docked, and we’ve walked for several hours now without being accosted.

Since we’re posing as a couple, when we approach the center of town, I reach down and take Rainey’s hand. It’s even smaller than Evan’s and feels foreign resting in mine.

Rainey lifts her gaze to mine and smirks. Yeah, she’s about as thrilled with this ruse as I am. We enter the lobby of a stained green two-story hotel with crooked, worn shutters. A stone floor lists to one side as we make our way to the registration desk where a guy with a thick mustache and a bright orange button up shirt greets us. He says something in Spanish with enthusiasm, smiling so hard his cheeks nearly touch his ears.

Rainey responds, indicating me and continues on in a rapid fire conversation. She hands him a few bills and he gives her a key.

I follow her back outside, carrying our bags. One duffel is filled with a handful of clothes and toiletries and the others are stuffed with more bags to carry guns and ammo back to the Union. Money is sewn in hidden pockets in our fatigues, a knife is strapped to my ankle, and a gun sits in the waistband of my jeans.

Rainey heads down an alley only wide enough for us to fit through single-file. Behind the hotel is a staircase that wobbles with each step. Great. She stops at a door at the end of a narrow balcony with only a suspect railing to keep us from tumbling down the rocks to the beach a hundred feet below.

We enter a dark room smelling of vomit and dirty socks. A queen-sized bed is against the wall and a beat-up upholstered chair and ottoman sit in the corner.

“Only one bed?”

“We’re supposed to be a couple visiting from the Northern Territories,” she says. “I couldn’t very well ask for two beds.”

Rainey is about half my size, but there’s no way I’m letting her sleep anywhere but the bed.

“Okay, I’ll take the chair.”

She snorts. “You don’t have to do that. Your virtue is safe with me. Plus, you’re not exactly my type.”

My head swings her way. “Wrong plumbing?”

“Ego much? Wow, just because I don’t want to get all sweaty and horizontal with you, I must not be into guys. Is it really that rare for a hetero girl not to fling herself at you?”

I roll my eyes, not in the mood for this, but if we’re going to share a bed, might as well get this conversation over with. “No. It was the way you said it. I don’t know, forget I said anything.”

“You’re not bad to look at or anything, I just prefer my guys to be…less pathetically in love with someone else.”

“Point made. I’m gonna lie down until my stomach stops heaving. Join me or don’t.”

I flop on the bed and close my eyes, still feeling the gentle, and then not-so-gentle, rocking of the waves until I doze off.[/scroll-box]

T.H. Hernandez Bio:

THHernandez
When not visiting the imaginary worlds inside my head, I live in San Diego, California, with one husband, three children, two cats, and one dog. In addition to my day job as a technical writer and editor, I write young adult fiction. I love the intensity of teen emotions and the way they’re still figuring out life. When I’m not writing, you can find me with my nose in a book, hanging out with family and friends, hiking, or knitting. I’m obsessed with Facebook, young adult novels, bad lip reading videos, pumpkin spice lattes, microbrewed beers, and the San Diego Chargers.
