I slide the zipper of my duffel bag closed just as a knock comes on the front door. Eddie answers it, and I see my friends on the porch over his shoulder. Eddie greets them with a nod and pulls the door open to let them in. He met Lisa and Colin years ago in the Eastern Province when he was attempting to connect with his long lost daughter. Recognition replaces the indifference on Eddie’s face, and he smiles, shaking their hands.

“Eddie, you remember Bryce. This is Jack. Jack, this is my…my Eddie. Eddie McIntyre.”

Jack shakes Eddie’s hand with genuine enthusiasm. “It’s nice to meet you, sir. I’m a big fan.”

Eddie’s smile grows wide. This is his world, the one he knows how to live in — the one with adoring fans. “Good to meet you, Jack.”

Great, he can turn it on for a complete stranger, a fan, but his own daughter? I get stony silence.

Bryce reaches out and takes my bag, slinging it over his shoulder. I stand next to Eddie, not sure if I should hug him goodbye. He makes the decision for me, reaching an arm around and giving me an awkward pat on the back.

“Have fun,” he says, closing the door behind us.

We make our way to the express elevators in silence, no one finding it necessary to clue me in. Gliding down one hundred levels without a word spoken only increases the already building tension spiraling inside me, but asking questions when everyone else is quietly clenching their jaw, won’t get me anywhere.

Once on the ground, we take a commuter train the twenty-five miles out to the coast, emerging from the dark station into bright late morning sun. It’s a perfect Western Province day, all blue cloudless skies and yellow sunshine. We walk out to the boardwalk, a cool ocean breeze skating across my skin, fluttering strands of hair. The crashing surf is interspersed with screeching seagulls and children’s laughter. This is the most I’ve felt at home since getting back to the Union. Cleanliness aside, this is as close to being in the Ruins as I’ll get here.

A four-wheel-drive sand cruiser shuttles us to the check-in tent. We step out onto a path of groomed sand lined with solar luminaries that will light up at dusk, creating a glowing walkway. A campground employee leads us to a grouping of three white canvas tents adorned with strands of solar lights. Each tent has two cots, a small table with a vase of fresh honeysuckle and gardenias, and two folding chairs. Lisa and Jack dump their bags in one tent, and I follow Colin into another, setting my bag down. I suppose I could have let Colin and Bryce bunk together, but I don’t want to be alone.

The flap from the tent falls into place, and I spin around. “Colin, what the hell—”

He cuts me off, putting a finger to his lips. I’m trying hard not to freak out, but he’s making it difficult. His eyes roam over my face, his mouth pressed in a tight line. “I’ve got my ticket for the Northwest. I leave in a week.”

“Oh.” I drop into one of the chairs. Over the past couple of days, I haven’t thought much about him leaving. We both lapse back into silence. After a few minutes, I get up and go peek outside, looking for the others. Jack, Bryce, and Lisa head toward us with grave expressions. Turning back to Colin, I realize it’s the same expression he’s had the whole time we’ve been in here. Something really bad is going on.

They file into our tent, and Jack pulls a palm-sized electronic device from his pocket, moving it over the seams of the tent, the cots, the table. After glancing at a display on the front of the device, he motions for me to approach and sweeps it over me from head to toe. His shoulders relax and his jaw loosens for the first time since he arrived at my door this morning.

I raise both eyebrows, waiting for someone to clue me in, not sure if I’m allowed to speak yet.

Jack glances at Bryce before turning to me. “Someone bugged Lisa’s apartment.”

“What do you mean ‘bugged’?”

“I was helping her put up some speakers when I found a tiny Union-issue listening device. I swept her place with this and discovered twelve in total.”

“That’s insane.”

“We checked our place, too, and found another dozen there,” Jack says. “We need to check your dad’s place.”

“Why would anyone do that?

“You were gone a long time and so were we,” Bryce says, hands stuffed in the front pockets of his jeans. “Apparently someone noticed. We checked everyone’s clothing because we don’t know who planted the bugs, what all they had access to, or how long ago. We figured we’d be safest out here.”

A sliver of fear pierces me. “What did we say in Lisa’s apartment?”

Bryce shifts, pulling his hands from his pockets. “I don’t think it was anything specific. What about you at your dad’s?”

I shake my head. “Nothing. What about you guys at Lisa’s place before I got there?”

“Nothing much I can remember,” Jack says, dropping the device into his shirt pocket.

“What’s going on?” I ask, sinking onto my cot, my voice barely above a whisper.

“I don’t know,” Jack says. “But we’ve stumbled onto something even bigger than we realized.”

BOOK REVIEW: The Girl in the Tower (Winternight #2) by Katherine Arden

BOOK REVIEW: The Girl in the Tower (Winternight #2) by Katherine ArdenThe Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

Synopsis:

The magical adventure begun in The Bear and the Nightingale continues as brave Vasya, now a young woman, is forced to choose between marriage or life in a convent and instead flees her home—but soon finds herself called upon to help defend the city of Moscow when it comes under siege.

Orphaned and cast out as a witch by her village, Vasya’s options are few: resign herself to life in a convent, or allow her older sister to make her a match with a Moscovite prince. Both doom her to life in a tower, cut off from the vast world she longs to explore. So instead she chooses adventure, disguising herself as a boy and riding her horse into the woods. When a battle with some bandits who have been terrorizing the countryside earns her the admiration of the Grand Prince of Moscow, she must carefully guard the secret of her gender to remain in his good graces—even as she realizes his kingdom is under threat from mysterious forces only she will be able to stop.

You cannot love and be immortal.

First, let me say that I found MUCH enjoyment out of this series. There were some definite highs and lows-more on that later-but this book, mostly, brought me immense joy. After the first, I truly didn’t think this series was redeemable-and, in a way, it isn’t. It’s perhaps my fault that I can’t stomach babies dying (I mean, WTF?) and horses being burned alive (whether on a broader scope of attack and war, or not), but I’m sorry: These things will never be okay with me. But, besides those two transgressions, ie extreme triggers for me, this book was by far the strongest of the three (I’ve finished the third in ARC form).

Morozko remains the high point of this series, followed shortly by my baby horse, Solovey. They added heat when the book was growing cold, and humor when things got too dark. And, as anyone who has read this series knows, apparently horses can communicate with certain people? And, can I just say, they are snarky little turds and I was totally here for it.

But, back to Morozko. This book just…it catapulted a character I was already fond of into obsession mode. He was witty. Sharp. Dark. Protective. Seductive. And, I dare say, a bit tortured? I was absolutely head over heels for this very anti-hero, and he is Vasya’s perfect match.

The mare stood quietly, chewing at her hay. Morozko was staring into the fire and did not turn his head when she rose. Vasya thought of the long featureless years of his life, wondered how many nights he sat alone by a fire, or if he wandered the wild instead and made his dwelling seem to have a roof and walls and a fire only to please her.

THAT BEING SAID. Vasya irritated me many times-especially the end. This one part totally made me rage, and I find it wholly unforgivable. It was sick. It was weird. And I want NO FING PART OF IT. If not for this one part, this book would be an absolutely unforgettable favorite-and now, it’s honestly memorable (in some good ways, yes, OBVIOUSLY-it was by far my favorite of the series!) for all the wrong reasons, if I’m being honest.

But as though her words were a summoning, a door among the firs—a door she hadn’t seen—opened with the crack of breaking ice. A swath of firelight bloodied the virgin snow. Now, quite plainly, a house stood in this fir-grove. Long, curling eaves capped its wooden walls, and in the snow-torn firelight, the house seemed to lie breathing, crouched in the thicket.

This story is full of so much passion. Heart. Explosive action-it was honestly an amazing book that had me swooning so hard I scarcely found it easy to breathe-but that does NOT mean I forgive it’s transgressions-no matter how beautiful the covers are.

Synopsis:

I had a sister, once…

In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart.

I promised her the throne would not come between us.

Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks.

But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.

Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.

Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken.

TOP TEN TUESDAY: Favorite Couples In Books

Top Ten Tuesday.13

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
Today we’re sharing some of our Favorite Couples In Books.  There’s no way we could each narrow it down three choices!  So to help us out, we are each listing three of our favorite couples from the books we read in 2018.  So they are…..

(Cassie’s Choice – Review)

(Cassie’s Choice – Review)

1. In Harmony by Emma Scott
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Willow & Isaac  – I absolutely adored the story of Willow & Isaac. From their first encounter to the very last page (and everything in between), I was swept away by their love story. Willow and Isaac, while both strong and independent, were even better together. Life threw a lot at them (well, 380 pages worth of life), but it only made them a better couple in the end.

2. 9 Days and 9 Nights (99 Days #2) by Katie Cotugno
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Molly & Gabe – After the events of 99 Days, it was so incredibly wonderful to dive back into the complicated relationship of Molly and Gabe. As they travel across Europe with their current significant others, it was fascinating to see how much they grew up after everything that had happened in the past. Both Molly and Gabe were funny, sarcastic and the tension between them could be cut with a knife. I smiled so much reading this book and love this duology so much.

3. To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Elian & Lira  – We’ve talked about this book (and Elian!) a lot on this blog, and there’s a good reason for it. This book is SO good. But what makes it amazing is the dynamic and relationship between Lira and Elian. If you are looking for humor, action, peril and smoldering tension, mixed with pirates and non-Disney mermaids, then this is the perfect book. I honestly couldn’t love the relationship between Lira and Elian more, and am sad this was only a standalone and not a series.

4. The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) by Holly Black
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Cardan and Jude DUH – I know these two might not count as a couple-but no other COUPLE makes my heart beat as fast, slow, and all inbetween causing a frenzy of nerves, butterflies, and epic feels and romantic pining than these two do.  I want them to kiss until they are sick of it *smirk*.

(Chelsea’s Choice – Review)

(Chelsea’s Choice – Review)

5. Outlander (Outlander #1) by Diana Gabaldon
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Jamie and Claire Frasier – I cant even believe it took me so long to find these two darling babies because Claire is hilarious and Jamie is…Jamie is…Jamie is beyond words loyal, passionate, and loving and so devoted to Claire I can’t even breathe when I think of him.

6. The Diviners (The Diviners #1) by Libba Bray
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Sam and Evie – Again, do these two count??? I DON’T CARE ALRIGHT THEY ARE MY DAHHHLLIINNGGGGSSSSS AND I MUST PUT THEM BECAUSE SAM IS EVERYTHING and so in love with Evie I can’t even DEAL and Evie is pos-i-tute-ly the berries and I am obsessed with them BOTH. I need them to both me happy and SAFE, OKAY?!

(Jen’s Choice – Review)

(Jen’s Choice – Review)

7. The Prophecy (Titan #4) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Seth and Josie – There is something so powerful about love conquering all.  And what Josie and Seth had was definitely true love. It not only conquered all, but it gave them strength.  Strength with each other and it also helped them find strength within themselves. But they definitely didn’t have an easy path.  They had so many obstacles in their way. Yet they persevered. And their love grew stronger because of everything they faced. I loved that by the end, Seth and Josie truly felt like a power couple.

8. The Darkest Star (Origin #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Luc and Evie – Yes I chose another book by JLA, she writes couples that capture my heart!  I can’t talk much about Luc and Evie because of huge spoilers but just know that sacrifice, love and devotion were everything in this book.

(Jen’s Choice – Review)

(Arielle’s Choice – Review)

9. Glitter and Sparkle (Glitter and Sparkle #1) by Shari L. Tapscott
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Lauren and Harrison – Not only is Harrison her older brother’s best friend, but there was a huge hate to love vibe between them.  So as I watched them grow, they found a forever place in my heart.  I think about them often and this is one of my favorite books ever.

10. Tangled Like Us (Like Us #4) by Krista Ritchie & Becca Ritchie
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Jane and Thatcher~ Tangled Like Us:  I honestly don’t know what to say about these two without just a lot of crazy gesticulating hand movements and muttering.  They are one of my top favorite couples of ALL TIME.  Their relationship was so sweet and straightforward and there was never any miscommunications or big conflicts.  Their chemistry was off the freakin charts and so sexy I can barely handle it

(Arielle’s Choice – Review)

(Arielle’s Choice – Review)

11. Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns #1) by Kendare Blake
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Billy and Arsinoe – I was a little late to this series, but better late than never!  I loved that these two started out with a tentative, almost wary friendship that slowly blossomed into more.  Even after it was clear to me that they caught feelings, I enjoyed seeing them both deny it and continue to basically just heckle each other.  Billy is a 100% a cinnamon roll, too pure for this earth.

12. Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads
Josh and Hazel – Omg these two were too much for my heart to handle.  From TA and student, to friends, to friends who shared a drunken sexy time, to TWO PEOPLE MADLY IN LOVE, I loved every second of their togetherness.  The best part may have been Josh never wanting Hazel to change her crazy ways (and I say that with love), always wanting her to be the person she was, no matter what!

So these are our Favorite Couples In Books from 2018. Have you read any of these books yet? Or are they on your tbr? If not, then which books had your favorite couples in them last year?

BOOK REVIEW: Fireblood (Frostblood Saga #2) by Elly Blake

BOOK REVIEW: Fireblood (Frostblood Saga #2) by Elly BlakeFireblood (Frostblood Saga #2)
by Elly Blake

Synopsis:

All hail the Fire Queen.

Against all odds, Ruby has defeated the villainous Frost King and melted his throne of ice. But the bloodthirsty Minax that was trapped inside is now haunting her kingdom and everyone she loves. The answers to its demise may lie to the south in Sudesia, the land of the Firebloods, and a country that holds the secrets to Ruby’s powers and past…

Despite warnings from her beloved Arcus, Ruby accompanies a roguish Fireblood named Kai to Sudesia, where she must master her control of fire in a series of trials to gain the trust of the suspicious Fire Queen. Only then can she hope to access the knowledge that could defeat the rampaging Minax—which grows closer every moment. But as sparks fly in her moments alone with Kai, Ruby no longer knows whom to trust. The fates of two kingdoms are now in her hands.

He nodded, lips twisting in a slight grimace. “It frustrates Lord Ustathius to no end to find me here instead of in the council chambers. I told him this helps me think.”
“And does it?”
“Yes. It helps me think of you.”

It’s never my intention to belittle a book series on the second book (which I genuinely generally hate), or any of the books, really, if I love it with my whole heart. But, no, this was not a satisfying novel, no matter how much I wish it was so. I can’t love a book solely for the male lead, much as I want to, sometimes.

His lips twitched, the scar pulling taut in that way I found endlessly endearing. “And then there’s the matter of me having to duel with anyone who dared to stare at you. Which would be every man here.”
“They’d only stare because they’re afraid of me. They’re all waiting for me to melt something.”
“Ah, but, Lady Ruby, you already have,” he said, letting go of my waist to spin me in a quick circle. As I came back around, his hand returned to steady me. “You’ve melted my icy heart.”

I loved Arcus. I STILL love Arcus-even after Ruby’s typical heroine bullshit (yes, I cursed, which I have been trying not to do in my reviews anymore) where she feels the need to go against all reason, trust a complete stranger-a BOY stranger-and betray Arcus, in a manner. And yet, he still was an upstanding hero. He supports her-to an extent-because he loves her. And they still have their issues-their differences in powers and class-their worlds are different…yet he trusts her and would do anything for her, even when his whole court objects. To this, I say bravo, and I love him as a hero for it. Because, in the end, he let her do her thing, and that’s a beautiful sentiment.

“Home.” I sat trembling in the chair, his words and tone affecting me more than I wanted, making me want to curl up and weep in his arms. “I don’t even know where that is.“
“You’re my home,” Arcus said softly.

He was jealous, but not in a manner that held Ruby back from her dream. He was possessive, but only when he knew she wanted him-and only him-and he wanted the other male(s) to know it. And, finally, he would follow her anywhere. I just adore him….and I hope the final book does him justice, even as I found myself skimming this whole book because, alas, he was hardly in it (HOORAY FOR THAT SECOND BOOK PREDICTABILITY). Now, onto the copy of Nightblood I won in an Instagram giveaway-I am so excited! 😀

***************

Eh. I knew this one wasn’t going to be a win because of the second book tropes: Distance from Hero, extra random hero, boring self-discovery blah blah. But she hurt Arcus-which is unforgivable. So, there it is.

Plus, my goodness. I am reading faster than I can review-I’m only, oh, SIX reviews behind?!
