Just Finished and Loved

After the Kiss (Sex, Love & Stiletto #1) by Lauren Layne – 5 Stars!  A beautiful love story that I fell deeply in love with.  Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more.  Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.  Jen’s Review

This is not a test (This is not a test #1) by Courtney Summers 5 Stars!  This is the book that had me reading at every opportunity, even at the expense of not eating.  It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what do you hold on to? Chelsea’s Review

Prince of Thorns (The Broken Empire #1) by Mark Lawrence 5 Stars!  Saying that I was captivated wouldn’t do justice to the book – no. Because from the first line to the last, I stayed wide-eyed and eager to learn more.  When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. At thirteen, he led a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king… It’s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what’s rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar’s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him—and he has nothing left to lose. But treachery awaits him in his father’s castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining? Anna’s Review

Now Emma’s latest article forces her to face her demons—namely, the devilishly sexy guy who ditched her at the altar.  After giving up everything for a pro-soccer career, Alex Cassidy watches his dreams crumble as a knee injury sidelines him for good. Now he’s hanging up his cleats and giving journalism a shot. It’s just a coincidence that he happens to pick a job in the same field, and the same city, as his former fiancée . . . right? But when Emma moves in next door, it’s no accident. It’s research. And Alex can’t help wondering what might have been. Unlike the innocent girl he remembers, this Emma is chic, sophisticated, and assertive—and she wants absolutely nothing to do with him. The trouble is, Alex has never wanted her more.

Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers – Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard–falling from it is even harder.  Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High… until vicious rumors about her and her best friend’s boyfriend start going around.  Now Regina’s been “frozen out” and her ex-best friends are out for revenge.  If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day.  She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully.  Friendship doesn’t come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend… if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don’t break them both first.  Tensions grow and the abuse worsens as the final days of senior year march toward an explosive conclusion in this dark new tale from the author of Cracked Up To Be.

The Well of Ascension: Book Two of Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson – The story continues….in Mistborn – In a world where ash falls from the sky, and mist dominates the night, an evil cloaks the land and stifles all life. The future of the empire rests on the shoulders of a troublemaker and his young apprentice. Together, can they fill the world with colour once more?  In Brandon Sanderson’s intriguing tale of love, loss, despair and hope, a new kind of magic enters the stage – Allomancy, a magic of the metals.

Synopsis:

While Merit didn’t choose to become a vampire or Sentinel of Cadogan House, she vowed to fight for her House and its Master, and she’s managed to forge strong alliances with powerful supernaturals across Chicago. But even though Merit has had wild adventures, this may be her deadliest yet...

A killer is stalking Chicago, preying on humans and leaving his victims with magical souvenirs. The CPD hasn’t been able to track the assailant, and as the body count rises, the city is running out of options. Vampires and humans aren’t on great terms, but murder makes for strange bedfellows. Can Merit find the killer before she becomes a target?

UGH. One of my fav series of all time-thanks for the Xmas present, Jenny!

*4.5 stars*

And so I’m finally caught up…..I can’t say I wasn’t wanting a little more. Like, you know, a certain something that would have been abso-freaking-lutely adorable…but sadly I am still left waiting. And that’s okay, I suppose…but I NEEDS IT. And soon. My fragile little heart can’t take the teaseing anymore lol. Or maybe it can….it’s pretty cute, really, how much Ethan loves and adores Merit. I know I gush a lot about this series, but it takes a special kind of author to write this many books and still have a steady story-line.

At times does it seem repetitive? Maybe a little. There’s always a mystery they need to solve. They are always fighting to stay in good light with both the Vampire politic world and the citizens of Chicago. And, a lot of the time Ethan and Merit fight-like most couples do. It’s different now, though. It’s more about not wanting the old you to interfere with the new and improved you, not wanting to lose the love of your life because of your past wrongs…and I get that. It’s adorable to see the fear of losing Merit in Ethan’s eyes. And it’s clear she is his world. I love it and cherish these moments, especially when he plays that possessive, jealous card….yum.

I refuse to write a lot more, because I want to write a good ARC review for book 11-but just know, things are changing, more enemies emerge in each new installment, and Ethan just becomes sweeter and sweeter…a certain Mallory scene comes to mind from the end of the book-Ethan, I love you, you sweet, adorable, loyal hunk of a man.

So, again, more quotes……Ethan has some of the best ones ever. Seriously. But Merit’s are pretty great, too…

Ethan’s shining moments:

This is exactly what I feared would happen. That you’d end up hurt because of me, because of Darius. I have known fear,” he quietly said. “I’ve soldiered, seen men die, walked toward death’s door and gone through it. But I have never known fear like the sight of you unconscious.”

His frustration was nearly palpable, his magic irritable. “I do what I do to protect you. That I trained you to fight, to bear a sword, to act with honor, doesn’t negate the fact that I would give my life for you, Merit.”

If he’d been afraid to tell me this-how much worse was it, at least in his own mind?
“That look in your eyes paralyzes me, Merit.”

*************************************

Merit’s moments:

“If you’re going to yell at me, do it in English please. I’d like to understand the insult so I can frame an appropriately pithy response.”

“I expected you’d be starving,” Ethan said. “So I asked Margot to bring this up.”
“Why do people always think I’m hungry?”
“Because you’re always hungry.”
“Well, I did run three miles today.”

“Liege, Merit. Dinner is served.”
I braced myself for fish stuffed with more fish, or a mousse of meat. But the meal that stared back from gleaming white plates was perfectly normal. Bacon cheeseburgers with hand cut fries and tumblers of chocolate milk shakes.
He smiled at me. “I decided for our award dinner we might have a meal that suited us both.”
“I’ve never loved you more.”
“Are you talking to me, Margot, or the burgers?”
“Yes,” I said.

Synopsis:

Welcome to Boomerang.com, the dating site for the millennial gen with its no-fuss, no-commitments matchups, and where work is steamier than any random hook-up.

Mia Galliano is an aspiring filmmaker. Ethan Vance has just played his last game as a collegiate soccer star. They’re sharp, hungry for success, and they share a secret.

Last night, Ethan and Mia met at a bar, and, well . . . one thing led to another, which led to them waking up the next morning—together. Things turned awkward in a hurry when they found themselves sharing a post hookup taxi . . . to the same place: Boomerang headquarters.

What began as a powerful connection between them is treated to a cold shower courtesy of two major complications. First, Boomerang has a strict policy against co-worker dating. And second, they’re now competitors for only one job at the end of summer.

As their internships come to an end, will they manage to keep their eyes on the future and their hands off each other, or will the pull of attraction put them right back where they started?

Just look at the cover. Have you seen the cover? See the colors? Well, now that I look at it, there’re not that much color but you know what? To read this book was like flying through colorful bubbles and yes, absolutely, I’m sure that would be an awesome experience. No?

The only thing that prevented me from giving it 5 stars is the fact that I felt the story drag at some point. Nothing insurmountable, but I must confess that I felt the urge to skim a page or two in the middle. Oh, and maybe you want to know if they’ll finally remember their night together? Oh yes they will. And let me tell you : that was hot.

For once I’m not adding any quote. I guess you’ll have to discover Ethan, Mia, their friends and families by yourself 😉

Synopsis:

Since Merit was turned into a vampire, and the protector of Chicago’s Cadogan House, it’s been a wild ride. She and Master vampire Ethan Sullivan have helped make Cadogan’s vampires the strongest in North America, and forged ties with paranormal folk of all breeds and creeds, living or dead…or both.

But now those alliances are about to be tested. A strange and twisted magic has ripped through the North American Central Pack, and Merit’s closest friends are caught in the crosshairs. Gabriel Keene, the Pack Apex, looks to Merit and Ethan for help. But who—or what—could possibly be powerful enough to out-magic a shifter?

Merit is about to go toe to toe, and cold steel to cold heart, to find out.

First of all, I am BEYOND ecstatic to be back in Ethan and Merit’s world. The mystery, the romance, the I-would-do-anything-for-you moments….they are divine. There is nothing like picking up one of these books-It’s like you’re coming home. They make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside no matter the content within-whether there’s devastation or break-ups or war, these books are just fabulous. I’ve yet to rate below a four. And, speaking of which, the only reason this isn’t a 4.5 is because I am about 20% into the 10th book and it is CLEARLY a full 5…so I didn’t think it would do the next book justice if I bumped this one up when it wasn’t as good as the next one. So, you know…..there’s that.
Me, after 8 books-

My excitement only grows *side smirk emoji*

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Some series are just too long. Some may say that’s the case with this particular series…but, in my opinion, after the huge altercation in book 4/5, they only got better and better as the series progressed. Book after book, issue after issue, we are FINALLY where we were meant to be. Some of you will understand that, some won’t. For those of you who know? Oh, yeah. It’s gettin’ spicy. 😉

So, to show my devotion and love to this series, I’ll give you some quotes, because everyone deserves a little Ethan in their life:

He glanced at my muddy pants and jacket. “And I presume my Sentinel would appreciate a change of clothes.”
“Cadogan’s Sentinel, if that’s what you meant to say, would appreciate a change of clothes. And a shower.”
Gabriel grinned. “She has your number, Sullivan.”
“And my heart, for better or worse.” He looked at me and smiled, ignoring the mixed company, and sent blood rushing to my cheeks.

***

No matter how foreign the world, the landmarks, the customs, I’d never be a stranger beside Ethan. Love bred the best kind of familiarity.

***

His lips so soft, yet so stern, he pressed his mouth to mine.
“I will have both of you,” he said. “My sentinel and my city. And the GP will learn exactly how stubborn we both can be.”

Synopsis:

As a leading columnist for Stiletto, Grace Brighton has built a career warning women about rotten, cheating liars. She just never suspected her fiancé would be one of them. After Grace takes a heart-mending hiatus, her first assignment is to go on a couple of dates with a counterpart from the men’s magazine Oxford and report her impressions. Grace 1.0 may have been instantly smitten with the gorgeous correspondent, but Grace 2.0 has sworn off relationships for six months, and she’s not falling for his outstanding bod and trophy-winning kisses . . . or is she?

Jake Malone wants to get back to the fly-by-night, who-knows-what’s-next guy he used to be, and he knows exactly how to do it. Oxford is adding a travel section, and Jake—with no wife and no kids and a willingness to live anywhere, eat anything, do everything—is perfect for the job . . . except that his playboy reputation makes his new editor nervous. To get the gig, he must agree to a fluffy joint article with Stiletto. But after just one date with snooty, sumptuous, sensational Grace Brighton, Jake starts taking this assignment a whole lot more seriously.

Review:

I am completely addicted to Lauren Layne’s books!  They are fun, sexy and keep me entertained until the last page.  She has this amazing ability to suck me in, become intertwined in the characters lives, and care about what happens to them.  Did I mention how much fun they are to read?!  Jake and Grace’s story is no exception.  They will make you laugh and melt while following their lives.

He hesitated. “I’m not a total dick, Grace.”
“Oooh, now see, we’ll have to differ on that one. You played me. Let me think the date was … something.”
Her hand slapped over her mouth in horror. Had she actually just said that.

Jake wants to to be the writer for the new travel section that they are adding at Oxford, the men’s magazine he works at.  Grace, who works at Stiletto, wants to prove a point that she can still read guys.  Especially since her boyfriend, of ten years, was cheating on her while she was clueless.  Did I mention that she had just written an article on how to spot the signs you are with a cheater, and well, she clearly didn’t. To both get what they want, they agree to the proposal their bosses throw at them.  Write an article after each date to see who can read the opposite sex better.  Sounds easy enough.  But when you mix together pride, reputation and going to whatever extremes to win, well then you’re bound to get laughter, tears, and an enormous mess.

Once upon a time she’d thought that was sweet.
She’d thought that compliments meant something.
She knew better now. Compliments from men were about as reliable as the relationships on The Bachelor.

Grace is refined, sophisticated and from money.  Well, after some of the stunts she pulls, I may have to temporarily revoke the sophisticated part ha.  But she is bitter and wants restitution for what was done to her.  Even if it’s through winning this game at work.  She doesn’t want to feel as though she can’t read the opposite sex anymore.  She needs to prove to herself and others that she still can.  And to get to her goal, she doesn’t always play fair.  But then again, neither does Jake.  They are both in for a ton of surprises!

He hooked a hand behind her neck, his thumb rubbing over her cheek as he stared into her eyes. “I like touching.”
Grace blushed, and he chuckled. “A little late to be embarrassed, sweetheart.”
Sweetheart.

Jake Malone is alluring, magnetic and sexy as hell.  He can play games with me anytime he wants to!  But he has a huge past, since he’s single and one of the town’s top players.  From all of that experience, he knows how to make a woman sigh and lust after him.  You’ll see, even when he’s screwing over Grace, it’s impossible to be mad at him.  I loved him and he could do no wrong in my eyes. There was one thing that I wasn’t the hugest fan of, and that was the reference to Julie 1.0 (her old self) and Julie 2.0 (her new self).  I understood the need to clarify between her old way of thinking and the new way she wanted to be, but the constant reference throughout the book wore on me.  But despite this one aspect, I loved this book.

His gaze dropped to her mouth. “If I kiss you, will you write about it?”
“Do you want me to write about it?”
“Do you want me to kiss you?”

The games they played against each other were funny and thoroughly entertaining!  I loved every minute that they were tricking and manipulating each other, but my favorite parts where when they forgot about the game.  When they were just themselves and got lost in the moment.  It was sweet, and no where near innocent.  You could feel the sexual tension between them and I kept hoping one of them would fully drop the charade.  After being more than happy with the way Love the One You’re With ended, I’m off to read yet another Lauren Layne book!
