Synopsis:

A thrilling, seductive new series from New York Timesbestselling author Sarah J. Maas, blending Beauty and the Beastwith faerie lore.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore and George R. R. Martin, this first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down!

This was such a lovely dream. I’d never slept so wonderfully before. So warm, nestled beside him. Calm. Faintly, echoing into my world of slumber, he spoke again, his breath caressing my ear. “You’re exactly as I dreamed you’d be, too.”

When I first saw the description for this book, I was immediately enamored. Truth be told, I am a HUGE fairy-tale person, so when a popular author plays at releasing a re-telling, I get extremely excited. What better way to relive the best parts of my childhood than to read fun twists on all the classics-especially with heaping piles of peril mixed into them to satiate my adult hunger for not all things to go correctly…but maybe that’s just me. So when I saw this was a play on Beauty and the Beast, I knew I was going to love it. Sometimes you just know…and I definitely knew.

I knew I was headed down a path that would likely end in my mortal heart being left in pieces, and yet…and yet I couldn’t stop myself.

I think that the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale has the most room for multiple adaptions, but it also leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Opinions tend to overflow because some people think it should be this way, some believe it should be that way, but the fact remains that, in the end, it’s only what the author wants it to be. And that’s where it’s tough. I’ve seen multiple plays on this classic fairy-tale, but I have to give Maas credit where credit is due: This might be my favorite interpretation yet.

“I love you,” he whispered, and kissed my brow. “Thorns and all.”
He was gone when I awoke, and I was certain I had dreamed it.

 photo swirls15_zpshujj8m0j.gif

One of the reasons I say that is because of the authentic feel to it-I really and truly felt like I was re-imagining Belle and Beast’s journey as I read. It had just enough similarities that I was drooling all over the [screen] pages, and not once did I balk at the way Maas played out this newly imagined look at a young girl being held captive with someone she’d never think of in a million years as her prince.

Tamlin gave me a lazy grin. “And miss a chance to show off to a beautiful woman? Never.” I smiled down at my plate.
“You do look beautiful,” he said quietly. “I mean it,” he added when my mouth twisted to the side. “Didn’t you look in the mirror?”

Another thing?? I got all the peril I could ever want. It didn’t seem like much was going to happen, for a while, but bit by bit I began to see little things happening here and there that would totally excite me. And then, near the end, I got more than I could have ever hoped for. I am a sadistic monster, I know this, but I was absolutely ravenous while I read all the final trials. I couldn’t believe how quickly everything went perfectly downhill, making for a wonderful conclusion to a beautifully built up crescendo of emotions and desperation to save a newly discovered love. I was so tired it was almost painful to read, but from a certain point on, I didn’t care. My eyes were glued to the screen and I was done-I was stuck in this world whether I wanted to be or not. And, if anyone close to me cares to remember what I mean, here’s a huge hint as to why I’m ecstatic: The one scene I crave most in fantasy, paranormal, and dystopian was fully present, and it was oh-so-amazingly done. If nothing else, that whole scene/part/segment was made for me. My stone heart was obliterated and the 5 came pouring out of me…I was a smiling madwoman.

Against my volition, my body straightened, every muscle going taut, my bones straining. Magic, but deeper than that. Power seized everything inside me and took control: even my blood flowed where he willed it.
I couldn’t move. An invisible, talon-tipped hand scraped against my mind. And I knew-one push, one swipe of those mental claws, and who I was would cease to exist.

I won’t lie. I hate Maas’s other series that is so widely loved that surrounds Caelana (or however you spell it) and her brothel of men. I mean, come on, seriously?? How many guys can fall for her. SO…to say I was scared about this one would be an understatement. I mean, what if Maas is going to do it again? Rhysand seems to be pretty into our main character, from what I can tell….and I won’t lie and say it doesn’t worry me. I’m in love with Tamlin and it seems like it’s in the bag but…why should I invest my heart in someone that might likely just become another pawn in Maas’s quadruple love interest game? I don’t know. I’m STILL nervous. And then there’s the simple fact that I read an absolutely earth-shattering perfect book before this one, so I was having a hard time making this one a priority. It’s hard to follow something you loved so deeply. And I think that’s why I’m even mentioning that fact-for a book to still get a 5 while I’m wholeheartedly still invested in a prior story as I read (I still can’t stop thinking about it) then it has to be pretty good…I’m so so stubborn.

He smiled at me still, broadly and without restraint or hesitation. Isaac had never smiled at me like that. Isaac had never made my breath catch, just a little bit.

Let’s get to it, shall we? Tamlin. Come on, now. How fucking perfect was he? From the moment we met him I was….okay, I wasn’t completely into the story at first. Like I liked it, but I was just holding out to see how I’d feel about it before I got too attached. But then when I let my walls down, the feels came flooding in-along with the peril and protective alpha male tendencies. Can you say hot? Because oh boy, that’s the way to Chelsea’s heart, right there. Give me a damsel in distress any day and you’ve got my love and devotion to the story.

Insufferable. Lucien sighed as he looked me over. “Do you ever stop being so serious and dull?”
“Do you ever stop being such a prick?” I snapped back.
Dead-really, truly, I should have been dead for that.
But Lucien grinned at me. “Much better.”

And then our main girl, Feyre, she actually adds to the best part. She’s human, she gets herself in trouble, but she’s so strong and able to defend herself. She isn’t weak or meek or mild-she has a smart mouth and a somewhat bad attitude, but she doesn’t let anyone tell her off. And when she gets a chance at love? She takes it. She doesn’t play any games or doubt what she’s feeling, she just goes for it. And I think that’s another reason I loved this so much-we got LOVE SCENES!! Actual. Love. Scenes. Yaaaassss.

 photo dyra-byra-Love-blumen-roses-gifs-an_zpsh8jpcagp.gif

So, I really enjoyed this one. I didn’t really know what to say when I started this, and I still don’t know if I like everything I said or if it’s what I imagined when I thought of writing this review, but I think I portrayed my feelings correctly, if nothing else. This story wasn’t necessarily given a totally fair shake, and it still came out on top. I think that speaks louder than anything I could say on my own, even with that excessive fangirling I’m known to do from time to time. Feyre was a great lead to follow and Tamlin stole my heart-even Lucien and Rhysand were epic characters. If you’re feeling skeptical, I’d say give it a try. I think people are just so hard on certain books. Maybe all of them, if I’m being honest. But, yeah, some people were super harsh with this one and that’s fine…but I always wonder why. What else did they expect? It’s just a re-telling…and Maas told it how she wanted to. End of story. The end. Oh well. What do I know?

Synopsis:

Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he’s on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian – leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies.

Nobleman Captain Jezal dan Luthar, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendship. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government, if he can stay alive long enough to follow it.

Enter the wizard, Bayaz. A bald old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Logen, Jezal, and Glotka a whole lot more difficult.

Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood.

Back when I was in college and had to read a tons of French classics, I considered my dearly fantasy books as my escape, and I used to devour them all, good or bad, whenever I had the opportunity. Sadly, what had to happen finally happened : I grew tired of them, and spent years avoiding them, until a little bastard named Jorg came along in February, and then I thought : FUCK YEAH. There are still fantasy books I can enjoy. The Blade Itself is one of them.

If I can’t deny that this book contains a few great action scenes which were grandly appreciated (really), yet it’s by no means a full action-packed book, far from it, and I’m okay with it. Why? Because there’s more to it, and that’s why it could hold my interest. Indeed there’s just something in political and murder subplots in fantasy that appeals to me and never fails to captivate me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that long, boring ass wanderings we sometimes find *cough* The Well of Ascension *cough*. Not at all. In the contrary, in my opinion Abercrombie does a great job at both introducing a detailed world-building and an interesting cast of characters without never falling on the boring side. This may have something to do with his compelling writing, you know? Moreover there’s nothing better than gritty, witty and hilarious dialogues in my book, and The Blade Itself is filled with them.

Once again, my growing interest in the story can be linked to the blurred lines between good and evil or you know, right and wrong. That’s fucking fantastic, because although I used to read a lot of fantasy books when I was younger, I grew tired of the great knights in shining armors many series promote. Because that’s boring as fuck. Because that’s predictable. Therefore you can guess how ecstatic I am when I come across a book where these stereotypes are torn to pieces. I don’t need fairytales endings and super bright heroes. Because you know, I don’t really like them most of the time.

Why don’t I give 5 stars to the plot then? Because in my opinion it stays quite unoriginal for a fantasy book, and sometimes the fact that it’s a setup for the second book is obvious. Anyway, I find myself wildly eager to learn what will happen in the sequel, now that the die has been cast.

The characters, though. Guys! The characters! These little bastards made my day.

As you might have understood, none of them is likeable. Of course I love them all, what do you think? As Logen would say, let’s be a little realistic here : I wouldn’t want to meet them in a millions years – but the truth is, it’s almost never the case with my favorite characters, because I have the bad habit of falling in love with characters who share a questionable sense of morality.

Lately I realized that the only multi-POV I can handle are fantasy ones, and I really think that’s because the characterization is amazing in these cases : from Robin Hobb to Abercrombie, every character is fleshed-out and above that, has a different voice.

Logen. Meet this disillusioned warrior. Hey, you have to be realistic about these things. Give him a knife and watch. Isn’t he amazing?

“Blood gets you nothing but more blood. It follows me now, always, like my shadow, and like my shadow I can never be free of it. I should never be free of it. I’ve earned it. I’ve deserved it.”

Well, now, I said he was disillusioned, didn’t I?

Jezal. Talk about a selfish witty brat. Okay, he’s quite the little whining shit. Slap him hard because he deserves it, but loves him anyway, because… Erm…. he’s kind of brave and made me smile so bigErm … I think? Oh, come on, look at this beautiful declaration :

“Look, (…), I know you think I’m an ass and, well, I daresay I am, but I don’t plan always to be one.”

Are you impressed yet? No? Okay. Sigh. You’ve got work to do, little Jezal.

Bayaz, The powerful wizard. God, how I enjoyed his sarcasm!

“My help?” interrupted Bayaz. “You presume too much.”
“But you – ”
“Oh, that.” The Magus shrugged. “I am a liar.”

Glokta. Last but not least, tremble before him, here comes… Body found floating by the docks… the great torturer! I’m not gonna lie, I feel like I’m supposed to hate him somehow… I mean, the guy cuts fingers for a living for crying out loud! But I adored his cynicism, and in the end, he’s probably my favorite so far, because he’s maybe the most complex of all, and I love me some multi-layered characters.

“What poet was it who wrote there’s no pain worse than the pain of a broken heart? Sentimental shit. He should have spent more time in the Emperor’s prisons.”

Yes, he’s my favorite for sure. Or is it Jezal? Or Logen? Damn. I wouldn’t be able to make a choice between them to save my life.

Finally, in addition to their own awesomeness, the character dynamic is impressive : Astounding dialogues! Complex relationship! Trust issues!

Me. Watch this huge smile spreading on my lips. That’s happiness for you.

PS : I need to say something about the kiss scene. Her tongue lapped at his teeth? Eww, just eww. Please, don’t do this. It’s disgusting.

BOOK REVIEW – The Child Thief by Brom

BOOK REVIEW – The Child Thief by BromThe Child Thief by Brom

Synopsis:

Peter is quick, daring, and full of mischief—and like all boys, he loves to play, though his games often end in blood. His eyes are sparkling gold, and when he graces you with his smile you are his friend for life, but his promised land is not Neverland.

Fourteen-year-old Nick would have been murdered by the drug dealers preying on his family had Peter not saved him. Now the irresistibly charismatic wild boy wants Nick to follow him to a secret place of great adventure, where magic is alive and you never grow old. Even though he is wary of Peter's crazy talk of faeries and monsters, Nick agrees. After all, New York City is no longer safe for him, and what more could he possibly lose?

There is always more to lose.

Accompanying Peter to a gray and ravished island that was once a lush, enchanted paradise, Nick finds himself unwittingly recruited for a war that has raged for centuries—one where he must learn to fight or die among the "Devils," Peter's savage tribe of lost and stolen children.

There, Peter's dark past is revealed: left to wolves as an infant, despised and hunted, Peter moves restlessly between the worlds of faerie and man. The Child Thief is a leader of bloodthirsty children, a brave friend, and a creature driven to do whatever he must to stop the "Flesh-eaters" and save the last, wild magic in this dying land.

This retelling brilliantly succeeds in going to the very core of what gives this heartbreaking feeling to Peter Pan : The raw loneliness of the Lost Boys, and the ambiguity of Peter Pan : a hero, you think? Really?

There’s no such thing as a hero in this book, and it was fantastic. What is it with anti-hero that captivates me so much?

“The thief saw the fear, the confusion, and he smiled.
What had led this child here : abuse, neglect, molestation? All of the above perhaps? It really didn’t matter to the thief.”

Indeed in my opinion – and I’m weighing my words here – Brom’s Peter is the most interesting and above that, realistic Peter Pan whom I had the pleasure of meeting. Selfish. Delusional. Reckless. Driven. Deadly. So, so lonely. In a word, it seems impossible to describe him since his layers are so hard to unravel. Oh, man, how he is fleshed-out! So, what did I think? I thought he was fascinating, and despite his flaws, I couldn’t bring myself to hate him, even if damn, how he’s begging for it sometimes! I resented him, yes, but hated him? I couldn’t. How to hate him when we know what he went through? How not to be moved by the heart-wrenching flashbacks in his childhood, full of betrayals and loneliness? When he’s rejected on all sides? Actually I’m pretty sure that we’re not meant to love Peter, who is lost in all his contradictions, who loves his island and his Devils fiercely but who doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice them. Frankly, Peter shares many traits with sociopaths, as his aims justify any means in his head – I cared about him anyway.

And then, there’re the Lost Boys, some crazy, some brave, some cowards, all loyal to death to Peter. Everyone but Nick. Oh, Nick. How full of heartbreak your story is! He is the second main character besides Peter, and as it is, we get to follow his first weeks – months? – after Peter brought him in the Island. Nick isn’t like the other Lost Boys. Nick doubts. Nick complains. Nick questions. Now, how could we not understand it? The guy’s just been deceived into coming there under false pretends for crying out loud!

“Ask them their story. Peter finds the lost, the left-behind, the abused. Is that not why you are here? Did Peter not save you?”
“Peter tricked me.”

As usual, a book which manages to make me care deeply about the characters is a win. These characters? They made my heartbeat increase, I was frightened, mad for them. I even cried, for Pete’s sake! In a word, they never, ever left me indifferent.

“Men who fear demons see demons everywhere.”

Danger is everywhere in Avalon. From the horrible creatures to the Witch and her cringe-worthy (but somehow hilarious) daughters, not to mention the sluaghs who took hold of the Mists, Peter and his Devils must always stay on the defensive, because every path can lead to death.

“It didn’t make it okay. It didn’t make the hurt any less painful later, but it got him through. And right now he just needed to get through. “

God it was frightening at times – like, cringe-worthy frightening. Brom succeeded in bringing to life so many magical beings from Scottish fairy stories and other folklores that I couldn’t help but feel both horrified and enchanted.

Avalon is dying, suffering from the curse that the Flesh-eaters brought with them. Remember The Captain? Well, don’t expect pirates here, but bloodthirsty creatures whose goal is to chase all of the life out of the Island they call their home. Or are they, really? Nothing is never as simple as it seems. Avalon is dying, and Peter must save it. Will he be able to find allies in the Elves and other trolls who inhabit the island? How far will he go to fulfill what he considers as his mission? As I said, there’s no hero here. No right choice. But war. War and its sacrifices.

But don’t forget : there’s two sides to every story, and nothing is Manichean in The Child Thief. NOTHING. I found this wonderful.

Let me tell you something : this book was dark, so dark. That’s why it seems important to point that it is not a children book, far from it. Indeed we come across many disturbing scenes. There is religious fanaticism. There is child abuse. There is violence. There is torture. I couldn’t breathe.

Once again, as painful as it was at times, the darkness oozing from the book offers us a more realistic tale in my opinion. Avalon isn’t a place where we go to live adventures, no. Avalon is a place where we go when we’re so hurting from our life that we can’t make any other decision. Life is unfair, you know. And I hurt for them.

To sum up, here’s an outstanding dark retelling whose writing, beautiful and awe-inspiring, serves the story admirably. Obviously I loved it – hence my 5 stars rating – but if I had to point something that could bother some readers, it would be the pacing. Indeed although I was never bored, I can’t deny that I felt the need to stop several times. Remember the feeling we get when we’re forced to pause a book and that it loosens the tension? Well, here, the opposite happens. I needed to stop to keep the tension, and wasn’t able to read it in one sitting, or two, for that matter. Now, if you’re used to fantasy, or want to try it, I’d say go for it, because in the end, following these characters is an incredible experience you won’t soon forget.

PS. Just look at the art – Isn’t it wonderful?

Synopsis:

Knowing the outcome doesn't always make a choice easier...

Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with—her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.

In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school—but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the Compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through... and who she can’t live without.

He grabs hold of my hips and pulls me forward. “You didn’t fail me tonight. You saved me. I must’ve looked like the biggest idiot.”
I shake my head no, his hands on my hips making my breath come in shallow sips.
“What’s wrong?” He asks.
“You’re confusing me.”
“Really? And here I thought I was making things more clear.”

Phew! Now that all of THAT is out of the way….lol….I feel like I can say what I want to say. Or maybe I’m simply stalling. Hmm. That seems more like me, doesn’t it? It’s not often that I am so confused and conflicted about a story that I go to sleep not knowing what to rate and then wake up and feel the same way. It’s more….was this a 3 star or 4 star quality book? And that is SUCH a hard question for me-Normally it’s easy as breathing.

“When I read, I feel emotion all on my own. Emotion no living person is making me feel…”

On one hand-it’s Kasie West. I mean, come on, there’s not one boy she has created that hasn’t made my heart erupt in the warm fuzzies. And it’s truly a wonderful feeling to finally meet the absolutely adorable Trevor I’ve been hearing about. So, it goes without saying that I loved the writing-as always.

My dad shakes Rowan’s hand. “You guys having a good night?”
Really? My dad is going to analyze Rowan’s answer to a question about enjoyment? I give him the are-you-serious? look and he gives the I-know-I’m-overprotective-but-you-are-my-only-daughter look back. How can I argue with that look?

But then there are all these negatives. These negatives that screamed at me from the moment she split her future in half to decide what was best for her. Fuck knows why I Am. Such. A. Freak. About time travel/fake futures yada yada. I have absolutely zero clue as to why I get so overwhelmingly depressed when it comes to false scenarios and interchangeable events-but I do. And not since All Our Yesterdays have I felt so worried and flighty as I read. You see, I like certainties. I like knowing the sky is blue (most days) and that the grass is green. I love knowing that I love steak, so guess what, I’ll always choose steak, or that chicken fingers, no matter my age, will always be my jam. I like knowing that I have Keaton every day, no matter what, by my side. And I sure as hell like knowing that if I invest time into a certain book scenario…that it well and truly exists. Is that weird? Well…whatever.

So when I realized that this book was split by her two possible futures, it immediately punched me in the gut. Not because it wasn’t well-written-it was. No, it got to me because I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that she was falling in love with a guy (or two guys, if you wana get all technical about it), but really wasn’t. She just knew she would-If she chose that path. In fact, she was actually laying on her bed hanging out with her friend Laila.

 photo tumblr_mtn7r9ct2x1sg93oko1_500_zpsggrp3tsn.gif

And how can I fault a book for being exactly what it said it was? What right do I have to say I didn’t like it. It was executed beautifully (in my opinion-Kat may have other ideas- ‘s okay, Kat, you know more than me, anyway lol) and it made me smile when the two worlds would parallel the same event but in different ways. It was just sort of….cool. I liked it. So, see, it wasn’t the book’s fault that it was what it said it was. It’s my fault that I picked it up in the first place, because I just really think I need to add this to my (LONG) list of rules: No time travel or fake reality.

So, now that I got why I felt so negative from the beginning, it’s easier to break it down and say what really worked for me. I clearly wouldn’t let myself connect with anyone because I kept waiting for the inevitable ‘end of the vision’ moment, but when I finally let go, I started to finally devour it. But maybe a lot of that has to do with one certain boy…

“She loves to read, Mom. Like these really old, boring books. The ones Dad likes.” He points to the graphic novel on his desk. “Plus lame ones, like I do. And she’s not a huge football fan. I think she only tolerates it for our sake. She’s supersmart, my main competition in Government. And since coming into my room, she has probably had to stop herself several times from cleaning up the shoes spilling out of my closet.”

Ahhhh Trevor. So flippin’ cute. P.S. That’s another reason I wasn’t happy-I really really really reeeeeeaaaallllyyy wanted more Trevor time, but instead I had to share it with her other path. Bah. Screw her other path (barely refrained from an unnecessary expletive there…)!! I just wanted Trevor time. Sweet, funny, kind, and a total nerd, he was a perfect Kasie West book boy. And while we got very little of him (I think, but that’s a subjective opinion) I still felt the rightness of him down to my core. Oh wait, but maybe those were the barely sustained butterflies that wouldn’t explode until after 60%…

“In the six years I’ve had this ability, nobody has ever asked me that question. Nobody has ever thought they were negotiable.”
He takes a deep breath. “I want you to choose me, Addie,” he whispers. “I want this to be real.”

 photo tumblr_ma2x67xD391qcwrtdo3_500_zpszbgtzdgz.gif

Now how is that last quote not supposed to rip me to shreds?! Come on. Ugh. So, no, this isn’t my favorite West novel. There was a lot of good and probably more bad, on my radar, but it doesn’t change the amount of feels I received in the end. I’m a sucker for badass endings, and this one was pretty flippin’ awesome. My heart was warm from the beginning, concerning Trevor. But after 60%, I finally got those explosive feelings (both good and bad) I am accustomed to getting when I pick up one of her stories, instead of the lukewarm base I started at. Anyway, I still don’t know if this is the right rating, but for now it will suffice. Please note use of the ‘Blur rating’ shelf. It comes in handy on all these super confusing matters of the heart.

“I’ll never leave you,”
he told me, and I felt his arms on me. “As long as you love me, I’ll be here, hidden somewhere in your heart.”

I speak repeatedly of my all time favorite series. They have remained the same three since 2012/2013 and not much has touched them. It probably even gets to the point where people are like, yeah, dude, we get it, stop! But I think it speaks volumes when we can say that no other story touches us after 3 years even after reading, what, 100-120 books a year. Think about that. We meet couple after couple, star-crossed lover after star-crossed lover, see perilous scenarios and heart-breaking stories time and again, and yet those those three stories can’t be touched with a ten foot pole. My point in all this? Nothing has touched my top three favorite series of all time…..except this one. And that, to me, speaks louder than any words could.

What I’m trying to say is that this is now my fourth favorite series of all time. And. That. Is. Huge. You have no idea HOW huge. I don’t give away those spots easily. Something has to really claw into me for those spots to be given away, but my darling Rob and Scar have earned it. From their first tortured story to the final heart-wrenching finale, these two have not had it easy.

“Have you…” I drew a breath, trying to find the words. “When did you last-when did you see him?”
He swallowed. “A few weeks ago.”
I just looked at him.
“He…he would greatly benefit from hearing you’re alive,” he told me.
His careful words stabbed me. “He’s not doing well,” I said.

Book one was the one that got me, if I’m being honest. Actually, the most candid thing I could tell you is that once I finished book one, I was biased beyond compare. I don’t think there could be much that would have knocked this series down a peg. Book two, while so strong, didn’t touch book one-Gisbourne was a bastard who meddled heavily in their relationship, and we didn’t get as much one on one Rob and Scar time. So, naturally, I’d be pissy about that. But it’s more than that. From the moment we met them in book one, they only had eyes for one another…but they sure as hell wouldn’t admit it. Risking their lives to save one another, sacrificing all they had, doing all they could to keep the other alive-Come on, that’s a prime fucking story, guys. Action, conflicted and convoluted feelings, self-loathing, despair, a tortured (And I mean the best kind of tortured) hero, and a non-stop plot, I couldn’t breathe. So, yes, I was hooked from the beginning.

That’s not to say these last two didn’t have strong points, they did, but the first will always hold a very special place deep in my heart-after all, it got me addicted to this series, right?

In this story, Rob and Scar are separated by the hands of Prince John after View Spoiler » I think I had imagined the beginning of this book being different, but by them being apart for a little bit, the love they had for one another grew with each passing page, even as each day became harder than the last. My desperation to see Rob became this obsession, the rumors going around about Scar’s death causing me to panic for dear Rob’s sanity, seeing as he has been through so much and all he wants is her-No matter what. At all costs. He knows, in his heart, that there is no way she’s dead-So, her knowing this, she pulls a Scarlet and tries to make an escape so Little John isn’t lead to Nottingham, where Rob resides as View Spoiler » She knows he would risk life and limb and burn down every town to save her, because his love for her is that strong. But what happens when running only makes things worse?

I pulled away from her.
He will die.
Rob’s face, frozen like View Spoiler », with shock and sudden knowing, like he could see Death creeping toward him over my shoulder.
He will die.
Blood running out of Rob like a swollen spring river gone red.
He will die.
Rob’s blood staining the snow, staining the stones in the courtyard, staining my eyes.

This was a love story through and through. There was a lot of strategizing and tons of destruction, but through it all it was Rob and Scar still fighting and finding a way to ultimately be together. Rob was loyal, self-sacrificing, and perfect in this final installment. He took my breath away with his looks and love for Scar more than once. I was telling a friend yesterday that, yes, no one will ever take my number one BBF spot away, that spot is closed and vacuum sealed, but if these guys were real, and I had to choose one to marry, I really think Rob is that guy. I KNOW. That’s a bold statement coming from ME, but think about it: Heroic, tortured, self-sacrificing, loyal, kind, jealous, protective, and not a supernatural being…though, there’s an argument for those guys, too. And after I said it of course I was like, ‘Wellllll, but what about…’, so I am flighty about that. But, the point is, I said it. I thought it. Rob is a hero first and foremost, but Scarlet is his one and only, and his fierce and undying love and devotion to Scarlet makes it hard to breathe. If the writing isn’t for you in this series, that’s fine, but don’t go through life not meeting my dear, loyal Rob.

I pushed him back with a grin. “Posturing braggart, show-off peacock!” I accused.
“If by that you mean I’m the best damn archer you’ve ever seen and you’d like to reward me with a kiss,” he said, drawing me back to him. “Then I accept. And yes, I will continue to give you generous lessons to achieve my epic-nay, legendary-skill.”

The writing were was the same as always with it’s fun (though, in book one it took some getting used to, I thought it was a typo!) substitutions of ‘were’ instead of ‘was’ with a quick pace and vivid imagery. After I became accustomed to the style of speak in book one, I really came to adore Gaughen’s writing. It is addicting and flows seamlessly from page to page, making this an uputdownable page turner. So, while this style is a shock at first, it immediately becomes addicting in a way you would never imagine. I wouldn’t pass this one up because of that, but who am I to say? I already told you I’m horribly biased.

Even as the words left my mouth, they didn’t feel true. Rob’s and my love had always been made in the cracks, the jagged little edges that came from the ruin of something else. It were a place that weren’t supposed to be filled with love, but that’s how it had always been. Our love filled the broken bits and made us whole again. There weren’t no perfect time to love him, not ever, and it had always been with the threat of death and hurt hovering around us. And we’d love each other anyway. Sure, and true.

So, while this was my least favorite of the series, it still brought tears to my eyes and I gasped more than once. I still got butterflies every other page and the book was like a night-light from all the highlights (Cough, I highlighted most full pages in a rainbow of colors, cough) I used on my IPad. Just because I preferred the first two in no way lessens my affections for this book as a whole, it just had a lot to live up to. Scarlet was still Scarlet, doubting herself and putting the good of the people ahead of herself, and Rob was still Rob, self-sacrificing and all for Scarlet and starting their life together. I adored Much, just as I have from the beginning, and I was obsessed with his role in this final story. And I missed a certain character so much it hurt, and I didn’t realize I would until he/she was gone, forever snuffed from existence. So, I could keep going on and on and on even as I’ve lost many of you one paragraph three (Most likely earlier, but shut up, it’s my send-off to Rob), but that would be redundant. I love this series with my whole heart, and I am about to cry even as I think about posting this review, because I will never read a new story about Rob and Scar again….And I don’t want to say goodbye to all of these wonderful characters. But there’s one thing I’ll never stop doing: Re-reading this wonderful series from beginning to end, forever looping and repeating the moments where Rob and Scar realized they loved one another and risked it all to be together. That sounds like heaven to me.

Nuzzling against his head, I whispered to him, “This is freedom, Rob.”
Using our twined hands to tuck our arms close around my body, he murmured into my hair, “
You were always my freedom, Scar.”
