Synopsis:

Geri McKenna has a not-so-secret crush on Sean Eastman, her older brother’s best friend. And it’s ripping her heart out that Sean has graduated high school and is about to move away from their little town forever.

Sean Eastman was given a gift: three years of high school living a normal life in the small town of Pembroke. Problem is he doesn’t want to leave, especially since he finally noticed that his best friend’s little sister, Geri, is really hot.

Shag Lake Prequel: The Kiss, is a short story about the coming of age of two teenagers who finally discover each other, only to be torn apart by the different paths their future takes them. Will they ever meet again?

Review:

The Kiss was a quick, fun read.  And I was so happy to learn that it was free.  You see, I wanted to read this prequel to find out if I wanted to pick up the next book, Shag Lake.  And when I finished that last page, I knew I needed to continue the story!  I really liked Geri, even though she comes across as young and inexperienced.  I also liked Sean, who is Geri’s older brother’s best friend.  But I needed to know not only what he was, but what would happen to them next.  I definitely recommend picking up this novella, although you should keep in mind that Shag Lake is not only a full length book, but it’s set eight years in the future.  So of course it has a different feel with action, suspense, steamy moments and creatures mixed into the pages.  FYI – It’s a NA Science Fiction book.   And by then, Geri has matured and I absolutely loved her.  And Sean was even more irresistible and someone I swooned over.  Hard.  And I just have to tell you…….I LOVED Shag Lake….spoiler alert….I gave it 4.5 Stars!

My review of Shag Lake will be posted tomorrow on release day. 🙂

Synopsis:

Worst. Road Trip. Ever.

Escaping with Reid Wentworth should have been fun, but how can I enjoy it when I just (accidentally) killed someone, my mom and brother are in danger, and the Consortium is trying to enslave humanity? (Yeah, they aren't fooling around.) So feeling something for Reid Wentworth was not part of the plan. Trying to help unite the Resistance against the Consortium means I can’t be distracted by hot boys.

The Resistance secret hideout isn’t exactly Hoth's Echo Base. A traitor there wants me dead, but we have no idea who it is. And with both the Resistance and the Consortium trying to control me, the only one I can trust is Reid. If we’re going to have any chance of protecting my family, controlling my unstable powers, and surviving the clash between the Oculi factions, I’m going to have to catch this traitor. By using myself as bait.

Review:

*Spoilers for Anomaly*

Enigma was an entertaining conclusion to the Schrodinger’s Consortium duology.  It was fast paced, had an adorable romance, fun superpowers, and I couldn’t help but like some of the new characters.  I’m so glad I gave this duology a try, and I will definitely be picking up Tonya Kuper’s future releases!  Here are some of my thoughts on Enigma –

A strong yet realistic heroine –

Anger seethed in my stomach as I watched thunderhead clouds billow from behind the mountain peaks. Energy buzzed in my fingers. This mole, this accomplice to my attempted murder, this orchestrator of the deaths of innocent people, didn’t know what was coming for him. – Josie

It’s been three days since Anomaly ended, and my heart was saddened to see how much Josie was suffering.  She was struggling emotionally from the fight she was in, along with the fact that she took someone’s life.  Someone who she thought she trusted, and was even a friend.  But I had faith that Josie would pull herself together.  And till then, I loved watching how she trained.  She was was beyond fierce and brave.  Yet her fears were always there too.  See, that’s one of the many reasons I liked her.  She was someone who was not only realistic, but easy to like!

Book boyfriend material –

The thought of Josie putting her life on the line split me into pieces. Part of me, the part that respected her decision to do this and knew she was capable of making her own decisions, ballooned with pride. But the other part of me, the part that wanted a future with her, the selfish part of me, ached from the terror of possibly losing her. – Reid

Probably my favorite thing about this whole book was Reid.  I know.  I’m hopeless.  I loved that his top priority was keeping Josie safe.  I loved that he was her biggest champion.  And I absolutely loved when he was authoritative to others.  He was amazing when he took charge!  You’ll see what I mean when they arrive in the Hub.  Reid was still sexy as ever, such a good guy, and someone I could easily obsess about.

Unique abilities and powers –

Reid slid his hands off my waist and one corner of his mouth curved upward. “Time to kick ass.”

I know I said this in my first review, but I have to mention it again.  The powers and abilities in this book, I’ve never read about them before.  It was fascinating to learn about, and I loved that they were entirely different from everything else out there.  It made reading about their training, fighting or even every day moments SO much fun!  And I loved seeing how Josie’s powers manifested *she was fierce!!*!

My only two wishes –

This moment mattered. This moment was all those other kisses, and touches, and years of watching each other rolled into one. He felt it, too. – Josie

I wish that some moments between Josie and Reid were expanded, because I’m greedy like that.  Especially in the beginning when they were traveling around and staying in motel rooms.  And had to share a bed.  I wanted those good night moments.  Whether they were sweet,  awkward or even if it showed Josie waking up from her nightmares in the middle of the night.  I couldn’t have had enough of Josie and Reid time (I was a little obsessed about them).  And I also wish there was more expansion on the Consortium.  I wanted to know why they were the way they were and learn more about them.

His hand wrapped around mine as I watched the sky and my chest suddenly seemed full. Reid was like quicksand— all consuming, sifting into parts of me I didn’t even know needed filling. – Josie

So while I guessed how a few things would turn out, there were some twists and turns that were wonderful and surprising.  I love when that happens!  But but but, there was mention of a thing in the future *yes I’m being vague here haha*.  So while it wrapped up beautifully, it also left room for a future book or even a spin-off?  Maybe it’s wishful thinking on my part, but I’d love to read more about these characters.  I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to them just yet, so fingers crossed!

Synopsis:

Reality is only an illusion.
Except for those who can control it…

Worst. Birthday. Ever.

My first boyfriend dumped me―happy birthday, Josie!―my dad is who knows where, I have some weird virus that makes me want to hurl, and now my ex is licking another girl's tonsils. Oh, and I'm officially the same age as my brother was when he died. Yeah, today is about as fun-filled as the swamps of Dagobah. But then weird things start happening…

Like I make something materialize just by thinking about it.

When hottily-hot badass Reid Wentworth shows up on a motorcycle, everything changes. Like, everything. Who I am. My family. What really happened to my brother. Existence. I am Oculi, and I have the ability to change reality with my thoughts. Now Reid, in all his hotness, is charged with guiding and protecting me as I begin learning how to bend reality. And he's the only thing standing between me and the secret organization that wants me dead…

Review:

Anomaly was fast paced, had me completely addicted and was so much fun!  I flew through the pages, I became attached and connected to the characters, I swooned over the romance, and the abilities/powers we learned about was beyond unique!  This book was such a huge win, and I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up in this duology!

Her safe little world had to be disrupted, and I was the one chosen to drag her into hell. It was my responsibility to keep her alive and in check. Her life depends on me. My throat felt dry. She didn’t deserve this, but she also didn’t have a choice. – Reid

Josie Harper made me laugh.  And totally not on purpose.  You see, she’s this science loving girl.  And the facts and explanations she gave throughout the book was spot on, but so not right for the moment lol.  I mean, we start out the book with her bestie bringing her a birthday cupcake to school…….with the image of Sheldon Cooper (Big Bang Theory TV Show) on it ha.  I quickly found myself liking her.  Josie was smart, sarcastic, strong, brave, honest and everything I love in a heroine.  So when Reid burst into her life, I felt a little clueless, just like Josie.  You see, she’s not aware of who she really is, and what’s she’s capable of doing.  She’s been sheltered and lied to her whole life, and Reid is about to blow her whole world up.

“I understand you’re scared and you don’t know what’s going on, but you can trust me . I won’t let anything happen to you.”  We stood there, staring at each other, and after a few seconds, something changed in her eyes and she closed the gap between us.

The day Reid entered her life, strange things started to take place.  She thought things, and they happened.  Plus she had this blinding pain in her brain.  Thankfully Reid explained to her that that was normal, since she was Oculi.  Oculi have the ability to make what they observe a reality.  That was SO original for me.  I was fascinated learning about their powers, and all that they could and couldn’t do!  Yet life wasn’t all roses.  Because of her powers, people wanted her dead.  And Reid was there to train and protect her from those people.

I wanted to grab her and run. To hell with the war, the Resistance. I wanted to take Josie away and keep her safe. – Reid

From the moment Josie and Reid met, I was a goner.  They have this attraction between them that was undeniable.  And their beautiful chemistry had me sighing out loud and left me wanting to curl into this happy little ball.  Plus I loved that we got to alternate between Josie and Reid!  Because then we got little clues about the past and what the bigger picture was from Reid.

“You’ve sacrificed so much,” I said, watching the water lap around my shins.
“Well,” he whispered, drawing me toward his side, “some things, some
people, are worth making sacrifices for.”

Oh, Reid Wentworth.  I loved everything about him.  That he worked so hard to earn Josie’s trust and friendship.  That he was fiercely loyal.  That he was her ultimate protector, while also training her to take care of herself.  The things he sacrificed to keep Josie safe and to train her, ugh, it pulled at my heart and made me fall harder for him.  He was such a good guy and I completely fell for him.  And as the story progressed, I loved hearing his thoughts and how he felt about Josie.  Melt me into a puddle why don’t you!  He was charming, strong and I was completely enchanted by him!

“I’m tired of not living,” I whispered. I hadn’t planned the words—they just broke out of me.
His eyes searched my face, then he dipped his head, lips barely grazing mine. – Josie

So I can’t say more, other than there were some manifestations of Josie’s powers that floored me and there was a twist I didn’t see coming from a mile away.  Anomaly was such a fun book, and it’s for people who love their sci-fi and paranormal stories to have a romance that plays a strong part.  Now I’m off to see how it all ends up in the final book, Enigma!

BOOK REVIEW – All the Stars Left Behind by Ashley Graham

BOOK REVIEW – All the Stars Left Behind by Ashley GrahamAll the Stars Left Behind by Ashley Graham

Add to: Goodreads

Synopsis:

Relocating to Arctic Norway would put a freeze on anyone’s social life. For Leda Lindgren, with her crutches and a chip on her shoulder the size of her former Manhattan home, the frozen tundra is just as boring as it sounds. Until she meets her uncle’s gorgeous employee.

Unfortunately, no matter how smoking hot the guy is, Roar comes with secrets as unnerving as his moving tattoos. And Leda doesn’t trust him.

Roar shouldn’t be drawn to the moody human girl with eyes that leave him weak in the knees. But when Leda gets shot by one of his enemies and survives, Roar finally understands why he’s drawn to her: Leda is exactly what he was sent to Earth to find. A weapon of immense power capable of saving his planet.

She just doesn’t know it yet.

Review:

All the Stars Left Behind had so much promise!  The premise was uniquely fascinating, the characters stood out and were original, and the parts about space travel and science blew my mind.  There was so much about this book that I loved.  Yet there’s a huge but.  It felt as though I was reading a beta copy.  Which means, I kept finding scenes that contradicted itself, moments where the ball was dropped, and things weren’t always fleshed out or made sense.  I don’t think I’ve ever re-read so many scenes just to figure out what was going on.  It was frustrating, because I wanted to enjoy the story.  Yet I found myself making a huge list of notes in regards to all of the issues.  And I’ve never done that before, unless I’m beta reading.  So if you’re not as picky as me, in regards to follow through and details, then you could have a lot of fun reading this book!  But if you want to take a peek at the list of issues I had with this book, then you can continue on below.  But be warned, there are spoilers since I talk about the problems in that corresponding chapter.

✩✮✩✮✩ Spoilers Below✩✮✩✮✩

Chapter 1

Uncle Arne tells Leda and Nils that he could use their help in his shop.  Yet when she gets out there, he never asks for her help.

Chapter 2

Roar states – “He’d rather lie and work with the humans than become like the Woede.”  So how is his situation on Earth different than the Woede’s situation on Earth?  We aren’t told anywhere in the book how the Woede’s situation is worse.  Our does he just not want to be similar to the Woede in any way?  It wasn’t clear.

Chapter 4

Roar made Leda and himself move from the shop to her house.  One, we’re never explained how Roar made that happened.  Two, she just drops it.  Down the road, she questions about him appearing in front of a different house, but she never questions what happened between the two of them.  Also, the next time they hang out she doesn’t even mention it.

Chapter 5

Oline complains about Stein pulling a disappearing act in public.  That he’s taking risks.  Later on in the chapter Roar says “none of us are getting drunk and blowing cover.”  YET Roar and Petrus just did the exact same thing, blowing cover, at the end of Chapter 4!

I don’t understand why they had to drug Petrus and Roar’s guardian.  This isn’t explained to us.  Why couldn’t they just tell him they’re missing a friend and will be out looking for him?  Or is there an instance in the past where their guardian didn’t grant them much freedom?  Why did they have to take the drug route?

Oline was so hot in the spaceship that she stripped down to her bra and underwear.  Then pages later it mentions her pulling a blanket up to her chin.  If she’s cold then why wouldn’t she put back on her clothes?  I don’t understand her actions, especially since it never mentions her grabbing a blanket.

While I love that we got to be in both of their heads, and it doesn’t bother me that sometimes we’re a few chapters with Leda before we go back to Roar, the transition felt choppy since I never know who we’re going to be with.  There’s no notice to who we are with.  Plus you never know if the next chapter is a continuation of the previous scene or if time has passed.

Chapter 8

Why was Charlie hiding in the closet with Leda?  Why wouldn’t they be out in the open?  He knows Roar or Petrus will be coming home, so why hide in the closet?

Chapter 10

Roar calls her defective when talking to Leda’s mom.  It would have been better to say something like ‘you think your daughter is defective’.  That way the word isn’t associated with making Roar look horrible, but instead would just make her mom look horrible.

Her Grandma hints that she shouldn’t get close to Roar.  But then down the road, everyone is shocked about what happens with both of their bloods when combined.  And that seems like the reason they can’t be together.  So is that the reason her Grandma says she shouldn’t get close to Roar?  Beause if so, she never confirms she knew it.  And if not, she never once tells Leda the reason behind her statement.

Her blood changed color because she came into close contact with Roar.  Why?  Is it because of their genetics and what they are to each other?  Or is it because he’s the same type of alien as her?  If so, her Grandma and Uncle are new aliens to her, so why wouldn’t they activate it?  There’s no explanation for this phenomenon.

They talk about Nils being a bargaining chip, yet they never use him when they’re desperate down the road.  No one mentions it once when they’re trying to figure out what to do.  And Nils is barely even mentioned on the ship in the future too, which felt a little strange since him and Leda became good friends.

Chapter 11

Contradictory statements – Roar couldn’t be alone with Leda without her Grandma or Uncle right behind him, then the next page it states that he’s there with her all night alone, with no mention of her Grandma or Uncle checking in or being right behind him.

Chapter 12

How is the spaceship not captured or controlled by the government?  Because in Chapter 14 Leda’s mom and the interrogation person have no problem finding them up in the sky.

Also, I know they came to Earth on an escape pod, so is that how they all got up to the spaceship?  Neither of those were explained. (Just found answer, explained in Chapter 23….. that’s quite a long time to wait to find out)

Chapter 14

Petrus asks to talk to Roar in private, so Roar has Stein take over the ship so he’s free, but then he walks away to find Leda.  Petrus’ request was forgotten.  Also, what did he want to warn Roar about Leda?  He doesn’t bring it up again.

Chapter 15

She never asked how her being a weapon worked, that sat a little weird with me.

Chapter 21

How did another ship get out of their planet if there was a web all around it not allowing anyone to get out.

We were never explained why Tulva tortures Leda.  Yes, Tulva says she wants answers, but she never asked Leda questions.  What was the point of torturing then?

Chapter 22

Their whole mission was to find Leda and bring her back.  So these words seem off –

“Oline wanted to head back to Aurelis. Abandon Leda and Stein to whatever fate they faced. Deep down, Roar knew it was the right thing to do, but returning home without the weapon meant they’d lost.”

How can it sit right with him when she’s his mission?  I can’t see how their planet needing them is above bringing back the weapon – aka completing their mission.

Chapter 27

Toorn stated –

“Activating the weapon doesn’t simply destroy the Woede, you know. Or perhaps no one mentioned that? Aurelites and Woede, we are connected in ways you might never imagine. Are you prepared to make that kind of sacrifice?”

But what doesn’t make sense is that that he’s taken over their planet and is killing people there.  So how does that work……he can murder many, but not all and his race will still be okay?

Chapter 28

It wasn’t very clear, but if she’s out in space without a suit and she’s with Roar (he has a suit on), then how did she not die?  Wouldn’t she run out of oxygen?

BOOK REVIEW: Carve the Mark (Untitled Duology #1) by Veronica Roth

BOOK REVIEW: Carve the Mark (Untitled Duology #1) by Veronica RothCarve the Mark by Veronica Roth
Purchase on: AmazoniBooks
Add to: Goodreads

Synopsis:

Fans of Star Wars and Divergent will revel in internationally bestselling author Veronica Roth’s stunning new science-fiction fantasy series.

On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, in a galaxy where some are favored by fate, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not—their gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reclaim their gifts, their fates, and their lives, and reset the balance of power in this world?

Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power—something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.

Akos is from the peace-loving nation of Thuvhe, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Though protected by his unusual currentgift, once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive—no matter what the cost. When Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. They must decide to help each other to survive—or to destroy one another.

Wow. I just…there are times when the words flow out of me in torrents and I can’t stop no matter how hard I try, but then there are times when I have literally one million things to say…and no idea how to say them. This book touched me in a way I’m not often used to-at least, not anymore. A long time ago, when I finally found my favorite genres and what made me the happiest, I was finding a seamless stream of five star books because I had finally found what worked for me. But lately, those streams of winners are harder to come by.

 photo tumblr_mbgaoe39KT1r6lo8oo1_250_zpslhr0bjt5.jpg

For one, I’m extremely picky now-I know what I like, down to the very last word, and anything less is unacceptable. It’s no secret to any of my friends that I love all things mayhem, death, destruction, forbidden love mixed with peril peril peril. But not many authors truly, truly give you all those things at once. It’s so rare, anyway. And, because it’s so rare, those authors who do deliver on all things nasty and despicable in the name of love make it impossible to forget who they are.

“You’re a Noavek,” he said stubbornly, folding his arms. “Brutality is in your blood.”

I have this little niche of what I like to call ‘peril authors’. They are my go-to when I want something that isn’t always rainbows and unicorns. Now, I’m not saying the stories don’t eventually end happily…but they leave you with some very nasty cliffhangers. Did I happen to mention that nasty, white-knuckle cliffhangers are literally my favorite thing EVER?? So, these authors, they never shy away from doing what they need to pack a devastating punch. I never go all in when my head isn’t in the right place-after all, even the most dastardly and peril obsessed reviewers need a break from all the heart-break. We aren’t robots, ya know?? And, after a while, if you read hardcore books one after the other, you are bound to become a little bit jaded.

 photo giphy 5_zpseagjcqv0.gif

So, when I was offered this beauty from the publishers of Veronica Roth’s newest MASTERPIECE, I, of course, accepted. For one, what an honor-little ol’ me, getting a book from a best-selling MEGA FAMOUS author before most of the world. It’s crazy, and I did not look a gift horse in mouth-I didn’t hesitate in responding. Secondly, I adored-ABSOLUTELY ADORED-the Divergent trilogy. And not just the first two-all three. Veronica Roth, while a very cunning and devious woman, is someone I wholly admire. Her writing is poetic and flows effortlessly from paragraph to paragraph, page to page. I have ALWAYS lumped her in with my favorite poetic authors.

“A knife,” I said. “A hot poker. A rusty nail.”
“You are more than any of those things.”

And, while she isn’t someone I think of weekly, or even monthly, I have never forgotten her after her shocking finale to the Divergent series. The ‘what-if’s and ‘what will she do next’s were never far from my mind…it has just taken a while to finally see a new book in the works from this spectacular woman.

“And you’re starting to sound kind of cocky, for someone I routinely beat up.”

I know many people are weary of what comes next from the daring author who shocked the world (and that is the LAST time I will mention her former series, because it is doing a great injustice to this beautiful book), and I know there are going to be a million comparisons-it’s just inevitable. But I truly saw something so amazing here-something I never thought I’d see. It would be such a shame to not give this duology a chance because of an uncertain future and phobia of the past. I know everyone is quick to fall in love with main characters (I fell so hard, so fast for these two new characters that it shocked even me) and people are quick to protect those they love—but the love I feel for these two AMAZING characters is so unparalleled, and permanent, that I must insist on reading this the moment it comes out.

 photo tumblr_nlix172VDH1tqou9go1_500_zpswrbdttgx.gif

When I looked at him again, he was smiling at me hesitantly.
“You love them,” he said. “All these places, all these things.”

I’ll admit that I was scared of the prospect of space travel-and for that matter, space lingo-but not once did I ever slow down or feel lost as I was racing through this fast-paced, addicting story. And that’s my favorite thing-I never wanted to put this book down. Roth’s passion was reflected on each and every page, echoing to us in a new, inventive way with each arising issue. Each character was created in a delicate manner, making for layered, flawed, and believable characters. These were people you wanted to root for, and you never really knew if they were going to win-in both mental and physical scenarios.

“You and I, we’ve become what we were made to become.”

Their minds were tested in unimaginable and barbaric ways, twisting what they believed and hoped for in life to the point of utter despair. Loyalties were bent and broken, repaired and restored-the boundaries of love and family snuffed out in a manner of minutes. You were forced to pick a side and survive…whether you wanted to or not.

The same thing she always did, only now he noticed-noticed that he knew it, that was; knew her routines, knew her.
And liked her.

Akos is from the peace loving Thuvhe, a wintery world where you have to wear goggles to walk around outside. It’s beauty is unparalleled to its inhabitants, crystallized and serene and snowy as can be. Grays are the norm, much like the environment…which can be seen as dull to others. Cyra is Noavek-Brutal and unforgiving Shotet tyrants who wear blue. Their beliefs couldn’t be any different, nor could the difference in style of life: One place bloodthirsty, unrelenting in its quest for power and dominance. Pain is no stranger here. You can immediately see why our two main characters are the way they are, and you instantly feel for both. Sides are hard to choose and lines are blurred…as becomes evident the farther into the story we get.

 photo tumblr_inline_nxn35woTO51rhf55x_500_zpsn2esyffa.gif

And here comes the good stuff, the stuff that makes this beautiful love story possible. Forbidden love…isn’t it the best thing ever, when done correctly? Yeah. I think so, too. Cyra’s currentgift is pain, Akos’s is to diffuse people’s gift. Both very valuable currentgifts…and both susceptible to manipulation and vulnerable to almost everyone. When paired together without a say in the matter, they realize they can be an asset to one another. Neither is willing to put all their trust in the other, but they also don’t fight what seems to be a tentative alliance. After all, it’s nice having someone who understands you (to a degree), someone who is there to take some of the burden away, who wants to help (again, to a degree-they do have differing conclusions to what they believe to be their story).

“Honor,” I said with a snort. “Honor has no place in survival.”

But, as they get closer, what was once clear begins to become a convoluted cloud of emotions and hope-could they possibly want the same thing?? Is she truly a monster, or can she still be someone who helps make the world a better place? Does she want to help Akos…even at the expense of going against her only brother?

 photo 8735574_zps30bjjtsy.gif

Akos’s kindness was something that resonated deeply within me right away-but, even more than that, his gradual fierceness. He’s not perfect, nor is he indestructible, but his silent fury mixed with an unrelenting kindness made him an instant book boyfriend that I was absolutely obsessed with. And then Cyra-one of my favorite female leads of all time. Some might say I even have a girl crush. Yeah-serious stuff, right?

“Next time, when something that sounds remarkably like war drums is going to wake me at dawn, could you maybe warn me?”

Cyra deals with pain 24/7. Literally-all day, all night-no matter what. Until she dispenses that pain into an unwilling victim, causing them pain so severe they would reveal their deepest, darkest secrets. She is numb to the power now, her brother’s little torture device. Cunning, witty, and skilled in combat like nobody’s business, she is not to be trifled with-seriously, she’s so badass. But-and probably why my girl crush (on top of my book boyfriend crush (so much win)) is shining so bright-she wasn’t so strong she didn’t have vulnerability or weakness. She lost sometimes. She didn’t always make the right choices. And, if I’m comparing here, I kept thinking of a female book character I really didn’t like…she kind of made up the anatomy of Cyra, here.

It was not hope; it did not soar; it slithered, clawed, and dragged, and it would not let me stop.

I saw a lot Adelina from Marie Lu’s most recent trilogy. Dark, corrupted, and willing to do what she had to for those she loved-and herself. She had to relieve the pain sometimes, you know? It’s not all about choice. But, see, I hated Adelina. She was okay, I guess, but I found her pathetic and whiny-not here. Cyra took the BEST PARTS of Adelina and made her someone I adored. Okay, I didn’t really read the second or third books of that trilogy, nor is there a direct line that connected these characters in any way-I just got the vibe, that feeling, and I dug it.

“I like to move.”
“I’ve noticed.”

She is a tool of destruction, of torture, she is a key to be used in war-she can bring any one person to their knees with her amazing power-but she is vulnerable to the pain, and to herself-she is resigned to be the monster she was fated to be. But not ONCE does she whine about it-it’s her life and she lives with it daily…And I found that so amazing. She just goes about her life in suffering, trying to (at Akos’s influence) be the best she can be. And, again, she doesn’t always succeed. Did I mention I love her? And Akos? And I ship them? Hm. Well. I’ll say it again: they are everything to me.

He offered touch to me so freely, without realizing how rare it was. How rare he was, to a person like me.

So, as you can see, I’m hooked. I was hooked from the first part that was in his POV, and I was sunk-line and sinker-when I met Cyra. These two were made for one another, but born enemies. They don’t want to like each other, and they don’t always understand, but…things happen. And isn’t slow burn romance the best kind of romance (especially paired with forbidden romance-HA thought you caught me there, didn’t you)?? Roth’s writing was, as promised, better than ever and even a bit more mature, if that’s even possible. She writes in a way you don’t once get confused about, no matter the content, and makes you physically ache for more. It’s been a long time since I was so stressed out I couldn’t breathe, but more than once I found myself gasping for breath and clutching my heart-stopping and staring at the page with wide eyes as I tried to calm my breathing (maybe this partially has to do with being pregnant, but I say no, I was just super excitable because…excellence at work, people) and get myself under control. I smiled so big without even realizing it that it bordered on embarrassing. I tried, and failed, repeatedly to find errors with the book and why my best of friends wouldn’t like the story (or anyone, for that matter, if I’m being honest), but never once could think of anything. And, if there was something, it was nit-picky and I completely missed it. I don’t know if this book is for everybody, or even what everyone else will think-All I can do is go with my heart and my gut, and they both say this is a winner. I know, without a doubt, that when this releases it will be my (late) Christmas gift to all friends and family that read. I know it’s a certainty I will be rushing to Barnes and Noble on release day to buy myself a hardback of this new absolute favorite. I have found three favorite books this year, all by amazing authors almost everyone loves…and this book tops them all. So, my hope is, with this long-winded review, that I’ve convinced or intrigued almost everyone to give this book a shot. And, for those who are not so easily swayed (or manipulated), honestly, its their loss.
