Synopsis:

My name is Katniss Everdeen.
Why am I not dead?
I should be dead.

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding.

It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans--except Katniss.

The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebels' Mockingjay--no matter what the personal cost.

“It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.”

You know that moment when you’ve been staring at your iPad and bawling without even realizing how long you’ve been doing so?? You just zone out, disappear, fall from the face of the earth and cease to exist in that moment? Yeah. That is me for this book. The end. You know…And me. Crying fat, hot crocodile tears.
All those months of taking it for granted that Peeta thought I was wonderful are over. Finally, he can see me for who I really am. Violent. Distrustful. Manipulative. Deadly. And I hate him for it.

Amazing how quickly time passes without you even realizing it. Tick, tock.
“Stay with me?”
“Always.”

Maybe it’s my deep emotional connection to the characters now that I’ve read the book so many times and have watched the movies on repeat. Maybe I’m just fucking biased because this is my favorite series IN LIFE. But I refuse to believe that.
“Ally.” Peeta says the words slowly, tasting it. “Friend. Lover. Victor. Enemy. Fiancee. Target. Mutt. Neighbor. Hunter. Tribute. Ally. I’ll add it to the list of words I use to try to figure you out. The problem is, I can’t tell what’s real anymore, and what’s made up.”

It’s the writing. It’s the characters. It’s the movies. It’s the
connection
. I will never feel this way again…now I’m sure of it. I’ve read and loved many books since 2012. And probably prior to it, as well. I’m a reader. And I’ve even had my bouts of, ‘Is this really still my favorite series? Am I just holding it on a pedestal?’ Because I’ll tell you-I’ve found a lot of new favorites. But passing this one isn’t so. I can rest assured. No one will ever beat the boy with the bread and the girl on fire. NO. ONE.

 photo tumblr_n5tdgj8xsv1s3u5lno3_500_zpsmoc2mlir.gif

I’ll miss it so much. Until next time, books. Hopefully it will be just as all-consuming as this time. Yeah-I’m as shocked as you are.
“You love me. Real or not real?”
I tell him, “Real.”

Synopsis:

Sparks are igniting.
Flames are spreading.
And the Capitol wants revenge.

Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol - a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.

Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.

In Catching Fire, the second novel in the Hunger Games trilogy, Suzanne Collins continues the story of Katniss Everdeen, testing her more than ever before...and surprising readers at every turn.

Again I will push my wonderful love of this series onto you…but I think I will do it with a few GIFs I have found (because….movie) and some of my favorite quotes. But like with my first review, I am letting the book itself do the talking-the simplistic and alluring nature of these stories shouldn’t be tarnished….but my obsession love for the series won’t let me do nothing. So, again, simple quotes so as to not ruin the story, but a little ‘telling’ of what you will find in this one. (And I added to the theme my lovely Anna setup…)

“I don’t want you forgetting how different our circumstaces are. If you die, and I live, there’s no life for me at all back in District Twelve. You’re my whole life.” Peeta says. “I would never be happy again. It’s different for you. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be hard. But there are other people who’d make your life worth living.”

“No one really needs me,” he says, and there’s no selfpity in his voice. It’s true his family doesn’t need him. They will mourn him, as will a handful of friends. But they will get on…. I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.

“I do,” I say. “I need you.”

“I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,” Peeta replies.”

Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

If you’ve seen the movie-GREAT. You’ll get it. If you’ve read the book….EVEN BETTER. You actually get it. So. You know. Make of this what you will. I’m going to finish my all time favorite series again…for the fourth time lol.

Synopsis:

VENGEANCE WILL BE HERS

Allison Sekemoto once struggled with the question: human or monster?

With the death of her love, Zeke, she has her answer.

MONSTER

Allie will embrace her cold vampire side to hunt down and end Sarren, the psychopathic vampire who murdered Zeke. But the trail is bloody and long, and Sarren has left many surprises for Allie and her companions—her creator, Kanin, and her blood brother, Jackal. The trail is leading straight to the one place they must protect at any cost—the last vampire-free zone on Earth, Eden. And Sarren has one final, brutal shock in store for Allie.

In a ruined world where no life is sacred and former allies can turn on you in one heartbeat, Allie will face her darkest days. And if she succeeds, triumph is short-lived in the face of surviving forever alone.

Review:

*Spoilers for The Immortal Rules & The Eternity Cure*

The Forever Song was an epic conclusion to the Blood of Eden trilogy!  It was filled to the brim with devastation, peril, hope, and I cherished every single page.   Even if I had tears in my eyes through parts of those last few chapters.  But I didn’t want it to end since it contained so much of what I loved in the first two books.  Luckily, I know that this series will continue to infiltrate my thoughts for a long time to come.

Humans meant nothing to me, not anymore. They were food, and I was a vampire. I was done pretending that I was anything less than a monster.
But I would kill Sarren.

Allie is a broken, dark, devastated mess, and the ties to her humanity have been shredded.  With the death of Zeke, she can no longer be the same girl she was in the past.  While refusing to mourn, she gets on the road with her brother, Jackal, and her sire, Kanin.  Because while they listened to crazy vamp, aka Sarren, torture Zeke, they heard Zeke give away details to Eden’s location.  And with Sarren already on the road headed towards the humans safe haven, they have to hurry.  If he gets there before them, all hell will break loose and no one will be safe.  But the road to Eden is filled with horrors only Sarren could create.  And none of them contemplated how much more sick and twisted he could get, because they haven’t seen anything yet!

“Hey, vampire girl,” Zeke whispered, his voice slightly choked. “I knew…you’d come for me.”
* * *
This…can’t be real.

The thing I was the most excited about, because it gave me hope and I need hope,  was that Allie and Zeke had to meet again.  Well, I at least hoped that much was true.  Their love stuck with me because it was pure, dangerous and oh so sweet.  I fell madly in love with Zeke and I flew through the pages trying to get to him.  But I was scared for their future.   Because do you remember the last line in The Eternity Cure?  I sure couldn’t forget it, and it haunted me.  I tried my hardest to figure out what Sarren was up to, and while I got part of it right, I wasn’t even close to the other part.  Sarren was the perfect villain and while I appreciate the crazy twists he took this story, I kept hoping he would die a miserable death.

“You are so bloody frustrating!” he roared, back fisting another rabid with the axhead. “Do you really think the cure is worth this? You think I’d be here now if that’s all I wanted?” He turned and sliced his weapon through the air, beheading one rabid and sinking it into another. “Get your damn head out of your ass, sister!” he seethed. “And give me a little fucking credit. That’s not why I’m here.” – Jackal

But ironically, one of my favorite things about this book was the family aspect between Allie, Jackal and Kanin.  I started out the series only liking Kanin and loathing Jackal, but while in the midst of this book I found myself caring for both of them.  Deeply.  You see, while Jackal and Allie spent time together in The Eternity Cure, he would make me laugh and smile.  I didn’t want to admit it, but I slowly warmed up to him and his charismatic self.  And I loved how him and Kanin treated Allie like family throughout the story.  Jackal would bicker and pester Allie, as an older brother should, and Kanin was the parent who would threaten or reprimand them to get along.  I can’t believe how much their little family made me so happy and warmed my heart.  But then I wanted to kick myself because now I cared deeply for Jackal and Kanin and I was terrified what their fate could be!

“It is…a very heavy weight to carry, Allison, the damnation of a world. I want you to be very certain, before we go any further. Is it worth it? Is he worth it?”
His words chilled me, but I already knew my answer. It was selfish, it was unreasonable, and I knew it was the wrong choice. But I looked up at Kanin, into his impassive face, and whispered, “Yes.”

I’m so sad to see these characters go, but thankfully each of them got the ending they deserved.  No matter how heartbreaking or happy it made me, I was thrilled with the way the story ended!  This is the second series I have fallen in love with by Julie Kagawa!  So it’s safe to say that yes, she has become one of my favorite authors.  And an author that is now on my auto buy list because her stories are emotional, devastating, heartwarming and I can’t wait to see what all of her future books hold!

Synopsis:

Winning will make you famous.
Losing means certain death.

The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, is a country that consists of a wealthy Capitol region surrounded by 12 poorer districts. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a 13th district against the Capitol resulted in its destruction and the creation of an annual televised event known as the Hunger Games. In punishment, and as a reminder of the power and grace of the Capitol, each district must yield one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. The 'tributes' are chosen during the annual Reaping and are forced to fight to the death, leaving only one survivor to claim victory.

When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. , she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

ALL TIME FAVORITE SERIES ALERT. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.

“You have a…remarkable memory.”
“I remember everything about you. You’re the one who wasn’t paying attention.”

Soooo…I said I wasn’t going to write a long-winded review that tarnished the simplistic, yet epic, nature of my all time favorite series. And I don’t plan to-REALLY. But right before I started to get deep into GR, I found this wonderful piece of literature that stole my heart and I never really got to express how it changed my life. And I think it deserves at least a few words for that.
I don’t want to lose the boy with the bread.

 photo peeta_zpsdu56ezjs.gif

I have always been a reader-even as a little girl I could hole up in my room with the best of them if I needed to finish an (even then I knew) epic book. But I was always active in sports, encouraged to balance my time, to not be a total recluse-And I will always thank my parents for that. But now that I am older and can read before bed as I please with my own bank account to manage, I find that I read more than I even watch tv or even shop-which I also love doing

Then he smiles as if he’d be happy to lie there and gaze at me forever.

But for a while, life was more important-Sports, schoolwork, getting into college, finding my now husband…..and while I read, it was more like the common population was. I got to read, but didn’t get to flourish. And then my best friend (ex Best Friend now) in college MADE me read THG. My argument was, ‘Why in the hell would I want to read about a bunch of kids killing each other?’ The barbarics of it astounded me and the inhumanity it must have taken to write it (or so I thought) appalled me. But then I picked it up-begrudgingly-and my world was flipped on it’s axis. Nothing has ever been the same. I read this series in a week-two or three days, to be exact-and I couldn’t be bothered with life, my husband, or ANYONE. And then, because it literally consumed my soul, I read it two weeks later-in full-again. I. Could. Not. Think. About. Anything else. Because how could a book about the MURDER of children be this good??

“Stay Alive.”

 photo tumblr_m8vt7xeTHR1r3ahwlo5_500_zps6izpx9t6.gif

But that’s where I was one hundred percent wrong. This book is so much deeper than death-it’s about life, it’s about doing everything you can to survive, to save your family and those you care about. It’s about love and compassion and the question of humanity and what you are willing to do to survive and keep those you care about out of harm’s way. It’s about a spark. A revolution. A girl on fire that no one saw coming….Katniss fucking Everdeen.

 photo original 2_zpsguffkxcp.gif

“No. Now, shut up and eat your pears.”

This book, even after having read it three times, was just as good as in 2012. I still laughed. I still cried. I still couldn’t breathe. The feels haven’t went anywhere and there are still scenes that the movie couldn’t capture or touch with a ten foot pole (Even though I do love the movies). The cave scene. The creek scene. The ‘hunting as a pair’ scene. Even the end couldn’t hold as much weight as the book. And for those of you who have only seen the movies, yeah, it’s amazing. Best book to movie adaption ever, in my opinion (all of them thus far, especially 2). But…I can’t help feeling sorry for you. You will never know the deep attachments that were formed and just how much depth there is to such a simple story. And…sorry. I feel sorry for you. So, no, I couldn’t not write something, because this series is everything to me and why I read like a lunatic now, always looking for my next fix that will make me feel like this again. I don’t know if it’s possible…but I’m up for the challenge.

BOOK REVIEW – Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway

BOOK REVIEW – Emmy & Oliver by Robin BenwayEmmy & Oliver by Robin Benway
Purchase on: AmazoniBooks
Add to: Goodreads

Synopsis:

Emmy’s best friend, Oliver, reappears after being kidnapped by his father ten years ago. Emmy hopes to pick up their relationship right where it left off. Are they destined to be together? Or has fate irreparably driven them apart?

Emmy just wants to be in charge of her own life.

She wants to stay out late, surf her favorite beach—go anywhere without her parents’ relentless worrying. But Emmy’s parents can’t seem to let her grow up—not since the day Oliver disappeared.

Oliver needs a moment to figure out his heart.

He’d thought, all these years, that his dad was the good guy. He never knew that it was his father who kidnapped him and kept him on the run. Discovering it, and finding himself returned to his old hometown, all at once, has his heart racing and his thoughts swirling.

Emmy and Oliver were going to be best friends forever, or maybe even more, before their futures were ripped apart. In Emmy’s soul, despite the space and time between them, their connection has never been severed. But is their story still written in the stars? Or are their hearts like the pieces of two different puzzles—impossible to fit together?

All in all, here’s an heartfelt story about family, friendship and what it means to belong somewhere, to grow up, without never hiding the hard truths and sore trials real life holds.

What is it that creates a family? A friendship? Are labels enough? Does calling someone a friend makes one?

“I looked up at my dad. “Tonight, when Oliver and I were talking, I said I’d still love you, even if you kidnapped me. I really would. I get how he feels.”
My dad smiled. “That’s the nicest and most sociopathic thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

Emmy & Oliver isn’t my first book by Robin Benway, therefore it doesn’t come as a surprise that her writing flows smoothly and hides several funny and thoughtful gems, making it really quotable, to put it simply. If the snarky monologues I adored in Also Known As are more discreet here, it remains that the characters’ interactions shared the smile-inducing quality that made me fall for her writing in the first place.

One might say that nothing really happens, but for me it can’t be seen as a flaw here : indeed it’s in the quietness that lie the most powerful scenes, don’t you think? Whose lives revolve around blowing things off and apocalyptic worlds, huh? To capture the essence of real life, sometimes we need to slow down, and in my opinion Robin Benway did it perfectly, even if I admit, it took quite a while for the story to completely hook me. Who cares, when in the end I’m smiling big and treasuring every moment I spent reading?

As for the characters, I can’t genuinely find a single one I didn’t like or understood, one way or another. They all show weaknesses without never crossing the line between what I can understand and what I find annoying.

Shaken to the core after Oliver’s kidnapping when he was 7 years old, they all had to find ways to cope, whether in being overprotective like Emmy’s parents or in creating a whole hidden life as Emmy did. All of them, while flawed, stay so supportive, realistic and heartwarming that I want to hug the hell out of them. Really. With a special mention for Emmy’s dad (thanks for the hooking up line, buddy) and her best-friend Drew (your driving skills didn’t go unnoticed, and I’m totally stealing your ‘The signs says STOP! Not GIVE UP!’ cry).

We recognize a great book when none of the characters is useless : family stands out in their lives (as it should be the case way more often in Young Adult), friends are well-developed characters (and don’t act as if they want to shred each others in pieces for once, thank you very much), boyfriends are supportive, kind, without any of the abusive and invasive traits that make me so, so angry. Not to mention that if romance there is, it stays light, slow, devoid of all this instalove crap authors love to feed us these days (or, to be fair, for ever – Romeo & Juliet, anyone?)

Life is messed-up and complicated, and I love nothing more than leaving a book without knowing how I would have reacted. This is what being a complex human is about, I guess, and I’m never denying that part of me, whatever that means.

If you’re looking for a realistic, heartwarming coming of age story, don’t be fooled by that misleading cover and try it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Ps. THAT FUCKING ACOUSTIC GUITAR. GUYS. I know right??!

*high-fives Drew & Caro*
