Synopsis:

THE RIVETING SEQUEL TO THE HIT BOOK YOU, NOW A NETFLIX SERIES

“Kepnes hits the mark, cuts deep, and twists the knife.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Delicious and insane...The plot may be twisty and scintillating, but its Kepnes’s wit and style that keep you coming back.” —Lena Dunham

“Hypnotic and scary.” —Stephen King

“Obsessed.” —Jessica Knoll, New York Times bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive

In the compulsively readable sequel to her widely acclaimed debut novel, You, Caroline Kepnes weaves a tale that Booklist calls “the love child of Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman.”

Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.

In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn’t want to hurt his new girlfriend—he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he’s done, he may not have a choice…

Honestly? I’m a bit shocked and disappointed. No, I DID NOT FINISH…but, hear me out, I just think-with a book/subject matter like this-less is more. The first book floored me. So many requotable quotes. Hilarious inner monologue. I LOVED Joe (as much as you can love a psycho who kills women who don’t adhere to what he believes a girlfriend should be ). I loved his take on life. On America-‘Fucking America, Beck.’. On pop culture and the idiots radiating through the streets of New York. The way he addressed Beck as ‘You’. Brilliant. And he slayed me with his humor.

But here…it hurts to say it…it just. It does not work. Not again, anyway. It was jarring, to say the least-to read about the untimely demise of Guinevere Beck. I was shocked that it happened, that he went through with it, that he killed someone he thought he loved. It was painful and cringy to read, honestly. But…it fit. It worked. It wasn’t shocking as much as it was heartbreaking.

Here? It’s tired. Overused. And I tire of him judging every woman he loves. I get wanting an epic, amazing love. Don’t many of us crave that? But disposing of all the women? My God it’s such an exaggerated overreaction and an overused formula. Okay. He’s a total freaking lunatic now. I think he really, truly didn’t intend to become a legit serial killer in the first (just a raving crazy stalker, of course :P), and he always *seemed* to find remorse for ‘having to do what needed to be done’. In Hidden Bodies, he kills like…without blinking. His rage blinds him. His lust for revenge drives him. And it’s just….annoying. Repetitive. And I don’t have that horribly wrong and misguided urge to sympathize with him. I found myself thinking [when something went wrong] ‘Well, bet he’ll kill [her/him] now.’ Shocker.

Where’s the fun of the mystery? The wondering if he really will go through with murdering the girl he wanted so much that he rearranged his whole life for her. I really and truly enjoyed the tone of the first book. It was almost like a fucked up version of a romance and I just loved it so much. I loved almost secretly rooting for them to make it, for Joe to get the girl he *thought* he loved. The sweet moments to flourish and become more. Sick as that is. This? This was a bloody witch hunt and I couldn’t emotionally connect with nor find the parallel of the Joe who made me feel as though he had a heart.

Robotic. Monotonous. Heart-breaking. I loved the effed up first book-but perhaps that’s what it should have stayed. A one book series that left a punch, readers enthralled, and the story wide open for our interpretation. This is definitely a case of knowing too much and there not being enough new (or interesting) material to justify the continuance of his story.

Review

THIS BOOK IS FREAKIN’ GENIUS. Genius I tell you. A group of macho guys getting together READING ROMANCE NOVELS, helping each other fix their relationships?!?!?!ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!? I loved every. single. aspect. Of this damn thing. Like I want this to be a really, really great review but I think it’s going to end up being one of those where I flail around like a cray person because I am so in love. Like everything about this entire book was PERFECT. EVERYTHING!!

Like at one point, when the main character, Gavin, is being initiated into the group, one of his friends is telling him why they read romances and that women LOVE reading them and secretly want that kind of stuff in their life. Gavin denies that his wife, Thea likes them because she doesn’t have any around the house. His friend saying something along the lines of “does she have an e-reader? I guarantee you that thing is full of romance novels.” HAHAH I FELT PERSONALLY ATTACKED. I have so much smut on my Kindle that it’s not even funny.

But in all seriousness, other than me loving the funny of a bromance book club in general, this book had a lot of important things you don’t see in every day romance. #1 it had a couple working to fix their relationship on the brink of a divorce. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book like that before. #2 Gavin had a stutter and it came out during every day conversation and was just a normal thing. There were several things brought up about it (him tell Thea he had been teased about it in high school, Thea bitching a woman out for being incredibly rude about it, him saying that one of the reasons he fell in love with Thea was because she never acted weird around him for it, never interrupted him, etc.) and again, I’ve read books where character have had stutters in the past but have worked past them so that it only comes out when they’re nervous or something. This was just a part of Gavin and I just loved it. Just one more book that people can relate to in a world where so many characters are too perfect.

There was the tiny, temporary fall out in the end but I think it was really necessary to their overall story and to Thea’s healing and self-discovery. The ending was perfect in every way and I seriously hope this series is a million books long because I will CHERISH EVERY ONE. Seriously, if you guys don’t go out and read this when it comes out, you’re all nuts!!! Lol, but really.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Berkley books for allowing me to read an eARC in exchange for an honest review!♥

Kulti from Kulti by Mariana Zapata
* Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

Mariana Zapata knows how to write a leading man and Kulti is no exception. He is surly and brooding and has absolutely no problem barking orders at his team, especially Sal. There’s a reason why he is so tortured, tortured enough to pass out drunk in a bar, alone, requiring Sal to come to his rescue. However, underneath all that attitude and snark, is a kind man who wants to help others. His belief in Sal’s abilities and potential never waivers and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do to help her succeed.

“What would I gain from telling you the first moment I realized you were meant to be mine? Nothing. You’re supposed to protect what you love, Sal. You taught me that. I didn’t wake up one day and know I didn’t want to live without your horrible temper. I saw so much of me in you at first, but you aren’t like me at all. You’re you, and I will go to my grave before I let anyone change any part of you. I know that without a doubt in my mind. This,” he pointed between us. “This is what matters.”

Nathaniel from Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Nathaniel took one more step and halted, his spine straight. He didn’t turn around, as if he couldn’t bear to face her.

“I like it here,” she said, the truth surprising her as she spoke. “It almost feels like—like a home to me. I feel safe. I’m not afraid of you or your nightmares.”

He laughed once, a bitter, humorless sound. “You barely know me. You haven’t seen what I can do, not truly. When that happens, I expect you’ll change your mind.”

Rhen from A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
* Review * Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

A sound chokes out of my throat. I want to weep for an entirely new reason. The burning pain has reached my head, and my eyes begin to cloud with stars.

“You are responsible,” she says, her terrible voice fading away. “You, Rhen. You alone will destroy them all.”

Rob from Call It What You Want by Brigid Kemmerer
* Review * Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

Once upon a time, I would stride across the park- ing lot and those bodies would part like the Red Sea. Everyone knew me. Everyone wanted to be me.

Now? No one wants to be Rob Lachlan Jr.

Not even me.

Luc from The Darkest Star (Origin #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
*Review * Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

While I never ever thought I would say this, because Daemon has been my #1 bbf for the last five years, Luc not only challenged him but he grabbed first place.  I feel so disloyal saying that, but Luc was EVERYTHING!  He was hilarious, sigh worthy and charming without even trying.  He made me laugh, sigh and when I started to see how much he protected those he cared for, it was astounding.

I wanted more than kissing. I wanted—
“What do you want?” he asked, his gaze holding mine.
“You,” I whispered, cheeks burning.
“You have me.” His thumb dragged along my lower lip. “You’ve always had me. Always.”

Ash from Bad Habit (Bad Love #1) by Charleigh Rose
*Review * Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

Asher Kelley, aka Ash, quickly owned my heart and his tortured soul spoke to me.  His history broke my heart, so even though he could be the biggest douche bag ever, he was also addicting and charismatic without even trying.  No matter what he did, Briar and I kept getting pulled in further and Ash will always be one of my top book boyfriends!

This thing between Briar and me is like a runaway train. It can’t be stopped, and it’ll take us both straight to hell.

“Tell me, Briar,” I whisper, getting closer to her ear. “Did he make you come from a kiss like I did? Does he know what you sound like as you do? Because I can still hear you. I can still see you.”

Colton from The Good Girl’s Guide to Being Bad by Cookie O’Gorman
*Review * Amazon * Goodreads *

Colton was my favorite type of guy, sigh.  He’s one of those where you have to dig and look for clues, to see who he truly was.  And while he came across as a conceited, cocky, jerk who got into fights and skipped school, he could also be so sweet to Sadie.  So when he stood up for his brother or did things that would steal my breath, how could I not love Colton with everything I was. Colton was the ultimate pierced, bad boy who quickly captured my heart.

When I finally worked up the courage, I followed my instinct and pulled the ring into my mouth, giving it a short tug.
That was when I realized just how much he’d been holding back.
With something like a growl, Colton slanted his mouth over mine, and the kiss went from a slow burn into a wildfire.

Court from The Raging Ones (The Raging Ones #1) by Krista and Becca Ritchie
*Review * Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

Court, Court, Court.  You have so much baggage to your past that it’s hard to comprehend how you could have ever had any kind of hope and trust in humanity again.  Yet, you did. And you welcomed Mykal, Franny and even your brother back into your life. You are so strong and kind to your core and that’s what really made an impression to me.

Stork from The Raging Ones (The Raging Ones #1) by Krista and Becca Ritchie
*Review * Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

Stork is a Saltarian that was raised by his kind’s mortal enemies, the humans.  He had to bear the burden he did growing up and even more so when he met up with Franny, Court, and Mykal.  It was obvious he wanted to give Franny her answers so bad but wouldn’t for the longest time because of being duty bound to the admirals.  Loooooved his character.

Fiske from Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young
*Review * Amazon * Book Depository * Goodreads *

I don’t belong to you.” I repeated the words I said to him that night he pulled the stitches from my arm. This time, to lift the weight that pressed down onto him and silence whatever words were whispering in his mind.

And because a small part of me still wanted them to be true.

Yes, you do.” He pulled the hair back out of my face so he could look at me. “Like I belong to you.

Synopsis:

Only in my family could a professional hockey player earning seven million dollars a year be considered a slacker.

I’m at the height of my athletic career. Yet my arrogant brother is always trying to recruit me into the family business: a global security company so secretive that I don’t even know its name.

Pass, thanks. I don’t need a summer job.

But the jerk ambushes me with a damsel in distress. That damsel is Alex, the competitive, sassy girl I knew when we were kids. Now she’s a drop-dead gorgeous woman in deep trouble.

So guess who’s on a flight to Hawaii?

It’s going to be a long week in paradise. My job is keeping Alex safe, while her job is torturing me with her tiny bikinis. Or maybe we’re torturing each other. It’s all snark and flirting until the threat against Alex gets serious. And this jock must become her major league protector.

Moonlighter is a stand-alone novel. No cliffhangers, no prior experience necessary. Contains: hackers, hockey players, and a hotel room with only one bed.

I am SO excited to be part of this cover reveal, you guys.  I fell in love with Bowen’s writing this summer and I haven’t looked back since.  My favorite part is that our favorite characters spring up again in other series so we never truly have to part with them.  Moonlighter is the story of Eric Bayer, one of the Brooklyn Bruisers that is mentioned in almost every previous Bruiser books, and Alex, Nate’s friend that we met in Brooklynaire.  I can’t WAIT to get my hands on this gem.

Synopsis:

Princess. Tribute. Sacrifice. Is she the one prophesied to unite two warring Fae courts? Or the one bound to destroy them?

In a realm ruled by magic, the ruthless Queen of Thorns is determined to destroy her nemesis, the cursed Prince of Evernight.

With war brewing between the bitter enemies, the prince forces Queen Adaia to uphold an ancient treaty: she will send one of her daughters to his court as a political hostage for three months.

The queen insists it’s the perfect opportunity for Princess Iskvien to end the war before it begins. But one look into Thiago’s smoldering eyes and Vi knows she’s no assassin.

The more secrets she uncovers about the prince and his court, the more she begins to question her mother’s motives.

Who is the true enemy? The dark prince who threatens her heart? Or the ruthless queen who will stop at nothing to destroy him?

And when the curse threatens to shatter both courts, is her heart strong enough to break it?

Review:

Promise of Darkness was enchanting and quickly stole my heart. From that first page I was addicted and it was impossible to put this book down. Especially since the world building was imaginative and rich. And the characters slowly became embedded into my heart. It was so easy to fall deeply in love with them and the world they lived in. So if you’re a fan of romantic stories that involve fae, Jennifer L. Armentrout or Wendy Higgins, definitely add this one to your tbr.

The worst part of this entire affair may be the fact that even though he’s my worst nightmare, he looks like he stepped directly from my dreams.

As part of an ancient treaty, Princess Iskvien, was to be sent away as a political hostage. She was to live with Thiago, The Prince of Darkness, for three months. And it would be the perfect opportunity to murder him, since war had been looming between their two courts. Yet as it all unfolded, there was so much more to this story. It was inspired by the Hades and Persephone myth, so if you’re familiar with that, you may have an idea where part of this story was going. But lies, betrayal, deceit, love, and friendship were splashed across the pages and I loved discovering what was truly going on. On top of it all, there was a curse that threatened the courts.

He’s the enemy of my people.
The prince who holds a blade to the throat of everyone I love.
A monster.
Except, he hasn’t hurt me. Not once.

I absolutely loved Princess Iskvien, aka Vi! She was smart, resourceful and thought on her feet. And I loved that she made me smile, laugh and cheer her on. She could be so stubborn, so it was no surprise that she refused to take her current predicament lying down. I had so much respect for her and I loved watching her grow into someone who could be fierce and brave.

Dangerous.
This is far too dangerous.
And yet, I could no more resist him, than I could pluck the moon from the sky with my fingers.

Then there was The Prince of Evernight, aka Thiago, who was addictive, patient and kind. He loved deeply and put his faith and trust into those close to him. Yet he could be so ruthless and dark. You could easily see how he earned his right to be his court’s ruler. But when it came to Vi, we saw so many sides of him. Especially when he would protect her. And for reasons I can’t say why, he was beyond tortured and suffered deeply. Thiago was the ultimate book boyfriend who was so easy to root for and love.

I want to forget he’s my enemy, I want to forget this is a game, forget everything but the sensation of those lips on my skin. Of all the challenges I’ve ever faced, this is the worst.
Because I don’t think one taste will ever be enough.

When Vi moved in with Thiago, she had no problems standing up to him. So each time they went toe to toe, you couldn’t knock the smile off of my face since their antics and banter were smile inducing. And as they slowly started to spend more time with each other, I felt a connection between them. No matter how much Vi fought it, it was there. She also couldn’t fight that so many of their moments together were laced with sexual tension. I found myself desperately wanting them to be so much more.

Dark shadows filled his eyes. “I can hold them off until you get back.”
It’s a lie. I can see it in his eyes. But why would he lie to me? Why risk his life to protect mine? We’re enemies. None of this makes any sense.

Within so many of the pages, secrets and lies filled the air. And those people, including Thiago, seemed to talk in riddles around and to Vi. At times I felt lost, just like her. But I quickly started to put all of the different clues together and I figured out the majority of the twists. It didn’t alter my enjoyment of this book at all. There was still so many moving parts and unknowns to this story. It was impossible for Promise of Darkness not to enrapture my heart.

“My life is yours, my heart, my soul. It always has been, from the second I saw you, curse you . If you want it, all you have to do is take it.”
My heart skips a beat.
“And if I don’t want it?” I whisper, glaring down at him.

Promise of Darkness was magical and easily cast me in its spell. Especially when perilous moments flooded the pages and forced Thiago and Vi to work together. With political unrest and magic weaved into the story, I was fascinated with this world. OH and the side characters added so much to this story, how could I not love this book? So yes, I definitely recommend Promise of Darkness. I’ll be counting down until I can dive into the next book of this series and discover the rest of this author’s books too!

About Bec McMasters:

I’m a writer. Dreamer. Travel Addict. And enthusiastic-if-not-perfect baker. I’ll honestly admit that I don’t always follow the recipe, be it cooking, or writing romances. If I’m not sitting in front of the computer, I’m probably plotting my next world trip. Or eating chocolate. Sometimes I run. Because…chocolate. I grew up on a steady diet of 80’s fantasy movies like Ladyhawke, Labyrinth and The Princess Bride, and love creating epic, fantasy-based worlds with heroes and heroines who must defeat all the odds to have their HEA. I live in a country town in Australia, with my very own beta hero, Byron; Kobe, a dog who will eat anything (even used teabags); and demanding chickens, Siggy and Lagertha.
