Synopsis:

At 21, Calla hasn't done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should. She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends.

But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought shed left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming.

Sexy and intense, Jax is in Calla’s business from they moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn't give them her mom.

Review:

I always know that whatever book I pick up from J. Lynn, I am going to have a fun time devouring every page. I can always count on the males being drool-worthy sexy, heroines that I like, dialogue that makes me smile and scenes that will make my heart skip a beat in happiness and in shock. Stay With Me hit all of these marks. It was such an enjoyable, easy read.

But standing where I was now, I didn’t feel so lucky. Actually, I was pretty sure Lady Luck was a coldhearted bitch who needed to die.

This time around we get to be in Calla’s head, and in the very first chapter we get to see the mess that has become this girl’s life. Calla just met the girlfriend of the guy she was secretly crushing on, and that’s just the sprinkles on her my life is going downhill sundae. She doesn’t know if she will be able to continue her education because her mom has cleaned her out. Her mom has taken all of her money and run up an obscene amount of debt in her name. In the slim hope of being able to get her life back on track, Calla makes the difficult decision to travel back to where she was raised. It never felt like home and she swore to herself that she would never return, but she is left with no choice. Upon her arrival, she meets Jackson James who is working at the bar she spent the majority of her childhood at. From here, the story becomes a twisted path of dangerous lies and truths and Calla finds herself stuck right in the middle of it all.

Oh my golly gee, I hoped his shirt just ripped up the sides and fell right off.

Jax was by far one of my favorite things about this story. He was dangerously sexy. He was bold, demanding, blunt and then sensitive in a blink of an eye. He was an alpha male that Calla desperately needed. And I was hoping that underneath it all, he had a heart of gold. I loved Jax. He physically made the air rush out of me and he made it impossible not to smile when he was being his overpowering self. I couldn’t not love that protective, overbearing side of him.

Jack – “I like you, Calla. Yeah, I’ve only known you a couple of days. But you’ve made me laugh,” he said, his gaze never leaving mine. “I can also tell you’re nice and sweet when you wanna be. I think you’re cute as hell and you make me hard.”
Whoa. Did he seriously just say that?

Calla was so different than how I perceived her in the previous book. She was so broken inside. And she was so broken on the outside too. My heart hurt for her and I kept hoping that she would eventually find the correct path to getting her life back on track. But the obstacles that kept appearing in front of her seemed insurmountable. But though it all, thank goodness she had logic on her side (well, for the most part!), a sweet disposition and inner thoughts that kept cracking me up.

Jack – “When I want something, I go for it. Life is way too damn short to live any other way. And I want to get to know you better.” Those lashes lowered one time, his gaze tracking to my lips like they were some kind of mecca. “Yeah, I definitely want to get to know you better.”
Holy cowbells.

The first line of this book had me, hook, line and sinker.  It made me squeal with delight and I just knew it was going to be a fun book to read.  I loved Jax.  Jax was utterly irresistible and paring him up with a sweetheart like Calla meant that we were in for a delightful read, and that it was!  And I’m so glad we got to catch up and see what Cam, Avery, Jase and Teresa were up to.  They made a few appearances in Stay With Me, and each time was enjoyable and fulfilling.  The reasons I didn’t fully love this book are twofold.  One is that the story seemed to go on a little longer than I liked and the other is that I was bothered by how something was resolved.  But despite those two issues, I still found myself enjoying another book from the With You saga.  I can’t wait to read Roxy’s story in the next installment!

Lifting my gaze, I met his. “I don’t want to think.”
Jax didn’t question or comment on this. There was a flare of something hot and heady in his eyes, and then he dipped his mouth to mine, and he kissed me sweetly-the kind of kiss that went beyond the heavy and sensual ones. It meant something, and I seemed to open up to it, really feeling it, believing in it.
And that was pretty damn spectacular.

Okay, so, I’ve gotten super picky lately…I mean super picky. A year ago, this would have been hands down 5 stars and no other book could touch it. But I have kind of fallen out of J. Armentrout’s spell, and that makes me sad…but it also helps to not be in a haze and to be able to see what works for me with my formerly favorite author and what doesn’t. A lot of people will disagree with me, but, and this is a large but…I think Armentrout shines in the paranormal romance genre. I think she produces her best work there. And that’s not to say that her NA books aren’t good, they are. But, when reading her NA vs. her Paranormal YA, I just connect way more and feel more passion from her Lux and Dark Elements and Covenants series. The things that bother me with her writing tend to prickle me less when it’s in a paranormal setting as opposed to her NA worlds.

“What does it taste like?” I resisted.
“Grits.”
I lowered my fork, looking at him blandly. “Details.”
He laughed as he cut through what looked like ten pancakes stacked. “One cannot simply describe grits. One must simply enjoy them.”
My eyes rolled, but I scooped up a small taste, made sure I had cheese in it, and gingerly tasted them. The whole time Jax watched and waited. I swallowed, unsure of what to think. I tried a little more.
“So?” he asked.
“I don’t know.” I shoved a mouthful in. “I haven’t decided yet. I think they taste good, but they’re called grits; therefore I’m not sure I can freely admit to liking something called grits. I have to really think about this.”
Jax laughed. “Cute.”

I think it has to do with the subject matter. Her Wait for You books tend to lean on the heavier side with humor laced throughout, but I think the inner dialogue doesn’t quite…go, whereas for her paranormal books they aren’t normally quite so gravid. So when she wants to throw in a funny saying during an epic battle, you aren’t quite so focused on it-you’re waiting for the next blow as opposed to the next emotional twist or turn. Those happen too, in her para, but not near as heavily as these NAs.

“You’re not going to be a message. You aren’t going to be shit to any of them. You feel me? No one is touching you,” he said, and he said it right in front of Nick. He touched me right in front of Nick, touched my scar. “We’re going to take care of this and none of this shit is going to rub off on you. Okay?”

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy this book, because I did. No, it wasn’t my favorite work of hers, but it still had an amazing male lead and a fun cast surrounding her. Can we just take a minute to acknowledge that J. Armentrout creates literally the best male leads?? If there is one thing I can always count on, it’s her ability to create guys that make my knees weak. I do have to admit he was my favorite part of this whole story. Jax was sexy, protective, swoony, sweet, determined, and passionate about his goals. <<< Hey, I think we forget about those goal oriented fellas these days….it’s still an admirable trait!!! I loved how he respected her and protected her even when she was trying to be stubborn and refused his help. I’m in love with guys that are overly protective without being annoying, so of course he was a total win for me.

I sucked in a sharp breath that hurt. He’d done this before, too, and it created the same maelstrom of emotion in me, but he did more this time. His lips followed that scar all the way down my cheek, right to the corner of my left lip, and then he kissed me. It was soft and sweet and it lingered. My hands went to his chest and I leaned into him.
When he lifted his mouth from mine and pressed his forehead against mine, tears had built in the back of my throat. “I don’t care about it, Calla. I don’t even think about it,” he said. “I don’t even see it.”

Ack, okay, my biggest complaint-I don’t like when authors build up to something epic….and then it just…isn’t. Like, why build it up at all??? Maybe I am a tad masochistic and do tend to like the dramatic, crazy endings of dystopian or sci-fi or paranormal better, but they are fifty times more satisfying than a boring and almost unrealistic talk-it-out ending…okay….hmmm….Maybe I’m getting my reality mixed up lol. I think I’ve been spending too much time in my fantasy world, but, eh, I still would like something crazy to happen at the end if it’s built up that way.

Jax’s chuckle brushed the back of my neck as he pulled me back tighter against him so that there was no space between us at all. “You still with me?”
“I’m still with you.”

So, that’s my spiel. I liked it, didn’t love. There was a certain point where I fell in love with it, but five minutes later I was lukewarm again. I was very up and down with my likes and loves for this’n. I feel so very fickle, but all in all I think that rating above accurately portrays my feelings throughout the entirety of the novel. A strong male lead and a fun atmosphere (the other favorite part of the story for me I didn’t mention), this story had a lot going for it. For those of you who are familiar with J. Armentrout and adore her writing, you’ll fall for this one as well. As for me, I do wish she could change up her sayings a bit….but, overall a really fun story that most will enjoy.

BOOK REVIEW – Frigid (Frigid #1) by J. Lynn

I’ve loved you my entire life,” he said, eyes locked on mine. “And I would love you for the rest of my life if you’d let me, Syd.”

Anyone who takes the time to talk to me knows that I have been waiting anxiously for the release of this novel. It’s no secret, I’ve been somewhat obnoxious in waiting for it’s impending introduction to the book world. With me, this happens frequently; I highly anticipate an upcoming book, and then when I get it, it doesn’t live up to my expectations. I don’t think I ever doubted how much I would like Frigid, but I did find myself wondering if it would even come close to her other works and if there was even room in my heart for another favorite. Apparently I have no qualms about pushing other favorites aside to make room, because from chapter 1, this book stole a piece of my heart. I loved it, undoubtedly.

“I was Kyler’s best friend.
And because of that, he would never love me the way I loved him.”

Sydney and Kyler have been best friends since they were little and met on the playground. He pushed her down, and in turn, she made him eat a mudpie the next day. They were best friends from that day on. We get a sweet incite to their childhood lives in little snippets at the beginning, and while they weren’t flashbacks per se, they were little memories put in place when either Kyler or Sydney had inner dialogue. I don’t always love past tense situations in a current story, but in this case it helped build these characters into people we truly care about.

Sydney has always loved Kyler-even through all of the girls and partying. He is her best friend, and she his. They can truly be themselves around each other and would do anything for the other person. But Sydney secretly loves him, which makes it even harder when his parade of girls grows even larger. She continues to bite her tongue, and they continue to be each other’s [though they don’t know it] everything.

Sydney Bell had always been, and would always be, a few pedestals too high for me.”

And then we have Kyler…ooooh, sweet Kyler. He too, has always had a thing for Sydney. Whenever a guy attempts to hit on Sydney, Kyler enters to be her savior and overprotective…friend? Forever parading around with tactless girls for senseless one night stands, he continues to hide his feelings for Syd, because he believes she will always deserve better than him.

“I thought about the time I’d climbed the tree to get into her bedroom. She’d been sick with mono and our parents had been keeping us apart for obvious reasons, but I’d been worried about her. Syd had always been small and I’d felt like I needed to take care of her.
I’d fallen out of the damn tree and nearly broken my leg.”
“Even as sick as she’d been, when she saw me her smile lit up her face and her blue eyes sparkled and shit.
I’d always been a sucker for her eyes.”

Finally, finally, they get snowed in while at a cabin in Snowshoe. They are forced to truly look at each other and see what the other person wants…to an extent. What would a romance novel be without a little misunderstanding, grovelling, and angst? Inevitably, Kyler and Sydney begin to scratch the surface of how much they mean to one another, and when they do, sparks fly. I can’t even begin to explain what makes me tick, but when I read a love scene, this is a prime example of what grips me. A love scene doesn’t have to be done perfectly, but you have to fall in love with the characters. If you truly connect with them, you’re on an emotional roller coaster ride just like they are-you feel so deeply what they feel that you get swept into their personal moment like it’s your own. Do you know how many times I have read a love scene and just been like…oh okay, movin’ on. Not with Kyler and Syd- I felt it to my core. All because of the characters and the snowy, romantic world she built around them. I loved these two people so much, even more so together; I cared deeply what happened to them.

“You think I’m beautiful?” His gaze roamed over my face like he was committing every freckle to memory.
“I’ve always thought you were beautiful, Syd.”

I don’t know that I have ever been more content with a couple…this is a bold statement, because wasn’t it inevitable that they get together? Yes, a little. But what got to me was how strong their roots were. Let me explain. They go back to ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. They know everything about each other. They like [love] each other no matter their flaws. They do everything together. When one has problems, the other considers it their problem as well. There are so many more instances, but the point is, I truly felt complete with these two. AND THAT TATTOO. GAH! It has the sweetest, deepest saying, and it made me love Kyler more than I already did. Overall a fun, light read…and well worth the wait.

*****

Oh…My Gosh. This book was just…SO adorable. JUST what I needed- a fun, light read with a friends-lovers romance. *review to come tomorrow* sigh. I just..can’t. Kyler…welcome to Chelsea’s Book BF club 😛

Jennifer has done it again-hooked me, line and sinker, to another of her compelling novels. I’m so glad she decided to do this “sekrit project”, lol, because I don’t know if I could have survived without her quirky writing style until the release of her 4th Lux novel or her other standalone coming this summer.

Let me start by saying that Cam…wow…there just aren’t enough words to describe how sweet and attentive he is. From the beginning he emits an air of confidence with a mix of playfulness and sexual innuendos that will have you grinning like an idiot in public, or in the office in my case :/, and laughing out loud on numerous occasions.

What I love most, though, is that while Cam is sure of himself and pushes a very close friendship with Avery, he never once forces his hand when he starts getting feelings for her, thus ruining the friendship. That is a very refreshing and redeeming quality and I can’t quite help but to love him even more for just that. He realizes something is off with Avery, but gives her the space she needs. And who wouldn’t love a guy with a turtle named Raphael?? Adorable. A definite nostalgic reference that related to me. Nice.

Avery is another great character. She made me laugh with her quirky inner dialougue and hilarious references. However, she has some demons in her past she hasn’t yet faced and this gets in the way of her possible relationship with Cam. OF COURSE this drove me mad the entire novel, but hey, complete and total intsa-love so isn’t for me, so what would be the fun without some angst along the way?

These character traits and lifestyles are the reasons Jennifer is one of my favorite authors, and I say this because I know I can always pick up her latest story and count on her for a fun, passionate read. I would suggest this story to anyone, really any of her stories, and know that others would enjoy it too. Hopefully she has a few more “sekrit projects” or perhaps just secrets she isn’t telling us, her loyal fans, so we can see some more of her work sooner rather than later.

Synopsis:

It's Wait for You as you've never seen it. Trust in Me lets you in on Cam's side of the #1 New York Times bestselling story.

Cameron Hamilton is used to getting what he wants, especially when it comes to women. But when Avery Morgansten comes crashing into his life—literally—he finally meets the one person who can resist his soulful baby blues. But Cam's not ready to give up. He can't get the feisty and intriguing girl out of his head.

Avery has secrets, secrets that keep her from admitting the feelings Cam knows she has for him. Will persistence (and some delicious homemade cookies) help him break down her barriers and gain her trust? Or will he be shut out of Avery's life, losing his first real shot at the kind of love that lasts forever?

Review:

I honestly thought I loved Wait For You. I was wrong. Trust In Me, which is in Cam’s perspective, is sooo much better!

Shortcake just dismissed my ass. For some reason, that made me smile. Maybe because I couldn’t remember the last time a girl outright sent me away. Interesting. Here I thought I was incredibly charming.

I know it’s hard to imagine, but Cam is even more swoon worthy in this book! I love that Cam created the most endearing nickname for Avery. Also, his patience with Avery, his ability to effortlessly tease her, and his ego, which definitely knows no limits, makes for such a yummy character. Jennifer Atmentrout always has this amazing ability to create male characters that are to die for!

“I’m going to marry that girl one day,” I heard myself say. Jase choked on his beer and bent over, dragging in deep breaths. “Holy shit.” I grinned.

Oh and the friends! I love both Cam and Avery’s friends. They are hilarious, endearing and add so much more to the book.

Brittany – This fine young gentleman, who is not a serial killer, is asking you out. You’re single. You’re young. You should say yes.

And Avery. Seeing her from Cam’s perspective made me smile. She is so innocent, witty, love worthy and you get to see how much she grows through his eyes.

The truth was, if I was perfect, it was only because of her. It would only ever be because of her.

I read Trust In Me right after I finished Wait For You and I did not think it was too repetitive. Between Cam’s internal dialogue and scenes that weren’t in the first book it kept it fresh and new. This book made me laugh and smile even more than Trust In Me so I definitely recommend it wholeheartedly!! Ohh and I almost forgot to mention that I have never in my life found cookies and eggs so appetizing!
