TOP TEN TUESDAY – Books Every YA Fantasy Lover Should Read

Top Ten Tuesday.13

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
Today we’re sharing what Books Every YA Fantasy Lover Should Read.  And they are….

(Jen’s Choice)

(Jen’s Review)

1. The Iron King (The Iron Fey #1) by Julie Kagawa
Amazon * Goodreads

I laughed, I cried and I even clapped out loud and I’m not a clapper while reading, or so I thought. I loved this book! I couldn’t believe how much this series just kept getting better and better as you progress through the books!

2. Bring Me Their Hearts (Bring Me Their Hearts #1) by Sara Wolf
Amazon * Goodreads

If you enjoy YA Fantasies that are filled with banter, mystery, romance, political intrigue and darkness, then you definitely have to give this book a try!  Zara was sarcastic, witty, spoke her mind and wasn’t afraid to challenge others.  And Prince Lucien was such a complex man who easily stole my heart.  I loved them both so much!

(Jen’s Review)

(Chelsea’s Review)

3. The Great Hunt (Eurona Duology #1) by Wendy Higgins
Amazon * Goodreads

The Great Hunt was absolutely enchanting! I became addicted to the story-line, infatuated with the characters, and I was reminded yet again why I love Wendy Higgins’ books.  Deceit, lies, betrayal, hope, sacrifice, love, and friendship were splashed across the pages and I fell madly in love with this duology.

4. Six of Crows (Six of Crows #1) by Leigh Bardugo
Amazon * Goodreads

Do I REALLY need to say why this book belongs in the heart of every YA fantasy lover? DO I? I’ll sum it up: Kaz. Heist. Journey. Loss love discovery and adventure. Need I say more?

(Chelsea’s Review)

(Chelsea’s Review)

5. The Demon King (Seven Realms #1) by Cinda Williams Chima
Amazon * Goodreads

I just really think this book has the most wonderful adventure, the most adorable, slow-burn romance, and a story so beautifully and intricately woven you can’t help but fall in love as you soar through four books at break-neck speed. And Han. Always Han.

6. Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms #1) by Morgan Rhodes
Amazon * Goodreads

This one is by far one of my favorite series EVER…but it takes a minute for you to truly grasp how epic this series is-each book grips you more and more and you fall harder and deeper (that’s what she said! Lol) in love with each of the characters (okay Magnus and Cleo for life) until you don’t know how to breathe without them. Again-Magnus is the reason to read this series. Get past that first love ‘interest’ and you will just DIE. That is all.

(Cassie’s Choice)

(Cassie’s Choice & Chelsea’s Review)

7. Red Queen (Red Queen #1) by Victoria Aveyard
Amazon * Goodreads

One of my favorite series ever and a fantastic YA fantasy series. Adventure, romance, uprisings, strong female characters, swoon-worthy male lead, friendship and twists all over the four-book series. But the one at the end of book one is one of the best.

8. A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab
Amazon * Goodreads

Also fantastic side characters, amazing world building and plenty of action and romance to go around.

(Cassie’s Choice & Chelsea’s Review)

(Arielle’s Choice)

9. An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes #1) by Sabaa Tahir
Amazon * Goodreads

I was recently forced to read this thanks to Chelsea and I’m so glad she did, because I feel hook, line and sinker for this series. As with my other favorites, it’s got an amazing world, strong male and female characters, romance and action.

10. Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness #1) by Tamora Pierce
Amazon * Goodreads

This woman is my FAVORITE author of all time and is the reason why I am so obsessed with YA Fantasy in the first place.  If you haven’t read any of her books, I suggest starting in the very beginning with this series as her characters are reoccurring throughout each new series based in Tortall.

(Arielle’s Choice)

(Arielle’s Choice)

11. The Winner’s Curse (The Winner’s Trilogy #1) by Marie Rutkoski
Amazon * Goodreads

Marie Rutkoski’s writing is some of the best that I have ever seen.  This series is full of great world building, crazy intrigue, and of course a romance that will have you screaming for more. HIGHLY recommend.

12. Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #1) by Laini Taylor
Amazon * Goodreads

Once again, I’m going with another series with writing that transcends so many other books in the YA genre.  I quickly fell in love with Karou’s quirky personality and the mysterious Akiva.  Once you start digging into their past you won’t be able to stop until the very last page.

So these are the Books Every YA Fantasy Lover Should Read. Have you read any of these or do you have them on your tbr?  If not, then what’s a book you think every YA Fantasy lover should read?

TOP TEN TUESDAY – Books We Decided to DNF

Top Ten Tuesday.13

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
Today we’re sharing what Books We Decided to DNF.  Some of them we only made it a chapter or two (I personally like to call those Read Sample Wasn’t For Me ha!) and others we lasted longer.  But ultimately these books just weren’t for us at all.  And they are….

(Arielle’s Choice)

(Arielle’s Choice)

1. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Amazon * Goodreads

Could not force myself to finish.  The ONLY good thing about this book is her time eating food in Italy.

2. Fifty Shades Freed (Fifty Shades #3) by E.L. James
Amazon * Goodreads

The only reason I tried reading these books is because I needed to see for myself what all the hype was. Unfortunately though, between the bad writing and plot points that I didn’t like and couldn’t look past, I had to stop. In the end it just wasn’t worth it to me!

(Jen’s Choice)

(Jen’s Choice)

3. Written in Red (The Others #1) by Anne Bishop
Amazon * Goodreads

While I liked where the story was going, I struggled with some of the descriptive texts.  There was this scene, near the beginning, where the creature waited for the human to wake up before killing them….and then the way those moments were described ehhhhh.  Yup.  I couldn’t handle it at all.

4. Never Tear Us Apart (Never #1) by Monica Murphy
Amazon * Goodreads

I made it to 50 pages and had to stop.   The flashback moments with her child molester and also the moments between that man and his son, I just couldn’t stomach any of it.  I felt sick to my stomach and it hurt my heart too much to continue.

(Jen’s Choice)

(Jen’s Choice)

5. Irresistible You (Chicago Rebels #1) by Kate Meader
Amazon * Goodreads

I felt kinda lost with all of the hockey info and then when we switched back and forth using the characters first and last name, well I couldn’t connect to any of them or the story.  I’ve heard amazing things about this author so I’m going to try another one of her series and hopefully that’ll be a better fit.

6. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before #1) by Jenny Han
Amazon * Goodreads

I didn’t end up liking Lara Jean and the story dragged for me.  I made it partway through chapter 3 and then I had to put the book down and move onto something that made me want to turn the pages.

(Chelsea’s Choice)

(Chelsea’s Choice)

7. Stalk Me (The Keatyn Chronicles #1) by Jillian Dodd
Amazon * Goodreads

Yikes….I don’t even know what to say…Overly cheesy, unrealistic, corny dialogue, switching from boy to boy, and insta-love on every street. I just can’t do it. Everything that’s a trigger for me was in this book. Not not not good.

8. Ten Tiny Breaths (Ten Tiny Breaths #1) by K.A. Tucker
Amazon * Goodreads

I just can’t. I can’t I can’t I can’t anymore.
-Dumb shit heroine.
-horrid writing (which I suspected but wanted a tortured male lead)
-stupid story line.

(Chelsea’s Choice)

(Chelsea’s Choice)

9. Paper Princess (The Royals #1) by Erin Watt
Amazon * Goodreads

One of the most ridiculous, asinine, overhyped books I’ve ever read.  Period.

10. Splintered (Splintered #1) by A.G. Howard
Amazon * Goodreads

It’s a shame I’m such a wuss, because this was so creative and fun and could have been something great and different for me. The romance was very sweet and I actually found myself enjoying all parts Jeb and Alyssa. Then the fantasy elements with tests for Alyssa would resurface and I would sit looking at the Ipad with mild disinterest, because I’d have to skim if I didn’t want to be disgusted. I wanted to love it. I begged and I bargained with myself, but I just couldn’t do it. Too many books to try, and way too much fantasy in this one. If only, if only….

So these are the Books We Decided to DNF.  Have you DNFed any of these books too?  If not, which one have you DNF?

TOP TEN TUESDAY – Books We Loved but Will Never Re-Read

Top Ten Tuesday.13

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
This week is Books We Loved but Will Never Re-Read
Seems like an easy enough TTT right?!  Wellllllllll this created the most hilarious, drama inducing texts.  You see, we’re really possessive and sensitive when it comes to our book boyfriends.  Arielle put The Selection which has Chelsea’s Maxon.  Chelsea put Anew which has my Tristan and she also put Safe Haven which has Josh Duhamel on the cover (I’ve loved him for-ev-er), and I put The Fever Series which has Chelsea’s Jericho.  Words were said, people tried to explain themselves and well it ended up being an emotional mess!  At the end of it all we were laughing so hysterically that both Chelsea’s husband and mine asked us why we were laughing so hard.  What was so funny?  HA!  It was so ridiculous and hilarious and we definitely proved how loyal we are to our book boys!!  So here the books we won’t ever read again……

Jen’s Choice

Jen’s Choice

1. Darkfever (Fever #1) by Karen Marie Moning
Amazon * Goodreads
If a series has more books than thee books then I find myself needing the romance to play a more dominant role.  And while this series is still one of my favorites, and I loved Mac and Barrons, the element of romance was definitely lacking for me.  So I can’t ever see myself reading these books again.

2. Divergent (Divergent #1) by Veronica Roth
Amazon * Goodreads
I loved this trilogy.  And I more than got why it had to end the way it did.  I think I was one of the rare ones, since I thought it ended the way it should.  But I have no desire to revisit the inevitable heartache all over again.

Jen’s Choice

Chelsea’s Choice

3. Stolen Songbird (The Malediction Trilogy #1) by Danielle L. Jensen
Amazon * Goodreads

I absolutely loved this book!  It was beautiful, enchanting and I swore it would become one of my favorite series.  Ever.  But the last book RUINED this series for me.  It was nothing like the first book I fell in love with and I was left extremely bitter and angry about the ending.  Yes I know I’m emotional lol.  So not only will I not ever pick this book back up again but I will never read anything by this author again too.

4. Love Show by Audrey Bell
Amazon * Goodreads
Jack was one of the most EPIC boys ever….and I believe he was truly screwed over in this story. It sold him short and this book broke me into a million pieces. Yes-it has a HEA. No. It did not make me happy [after the shit show in the end]. Sometimes one moment alters a whole novel-this is the case here, unfortunately. #BITTER.

Chelsea’s Choice

Chelsea’s Choice

5. Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi
Amaon * Goodreads
Amazing book. Amazing boy. Amazing story. I fell hard. I fell fast. Author changed my boy’s personality to the point of no recognition. AUTHOR IS ON AUTO DO-NOT-READ list. Chelsea is FURIOUS. #BITTERER  (Jen agrees with this too!)

6. Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks
Amazon * Goodreads
Yeah, random. I literally JUST saw this movie playing on tv yesterday…was so excited Because I loved the book AND movie…until I started watching and realized I now am married AND have a girl AND-when I saw him moving on with another woman and they start talking about his dead wife (he also has children)-I can’t 🙌. Just can’t. Tap out. I started BAWLING. #DidISayBitter ?

Chelsea’s Choice

Arielle’s Choice

7. Anew (The Archers of Avalon #1) by Chelsea Fine
Amazon * Goodreads
This series, frankly, is really only a case of being underwhelmed by the final book and everyone else I read it with LOVING THE END. Nothing kills a reading boner like being  the loser in the group wondering why you’re broken lol. #NotSoBitter

8. Paper Princess (The Royals #1) by Erin Watt
Amazon * Goodreads
This is one of those books and series that people either loved or hated when it came out.  I personally am OBSESSED  with Elle Kennedy’s writing (who is half of the Erin Watt pseudonym) but this series turned a little too wildly unbelievable and dramatic with people mysteriously coming back from the dead and even just the blown up reputation of the Royal boys for me to make any recs.

Arielle’s Choice

Arielle’s Choice

9. The Selection (The Selection #1) by Kiera Cass
Amazon * Goodreads

Don’t get me wrong, I ate these books up when they came out during the time of the dystopian craze.  It was a fresh new premise that no one had really done before but in the end, Cass didn’t pull it off to my liking.  There wasn’t nearly enough world building and I felt like there was way too much skipped over and left unexplained in favor of the romance (which to me isn’t really what dystopians are all about).

10. Evermore (The Immortals #1) by Alyson Noel
Amazon * Goodreads
It’s been so long since I’ve originally read this series that I can’t even really tell you what they were about.  I do know that I read them as soon as they each came out and loved them at the time but when I stumbled across them on one of my shelves on Goodreads, the ONLY thing I could remember was that the two main characters spend the ENITRE series trying to reverse this weird curse in which they hadn’t been able to have skin-to-skin contact so they could pick up where they had been disrupted by some ordeal in the first book and have sex–I wish I was kidding.

So these are the Books We Loved but Will Never Re-Read. Do you have any of these books on your won’t-ever-read-again-list?  Or are you upset to see any of them on here….like we were with each other lol!
