Synopsis:

Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more.

Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.

Review:

I was extremely giddy while reading this book.  It is going on my favorite’s list, and not just because it made me squeal out loud multiple times.  I loved the characters she created, the passion you felt from them, the angst between them, I loved every single page of this book!  I was completely lost in those pages.  At some point, I felt as though my heart was on the line, right along with Julies.  Tears became unavoidable, and keeping my fingers crossed while hoping for the best was my only choice.  After the Kiss was a beautiful love story that I fell deeply in love with.

“Do you have plans tonight?” he asked.
Tell him you’re busy. It’s too soon to be seeing each other every night of the week. Tell him—
“Nope, no plans.” Idiot.

Julie is on a mission to finding out what happens after that first kiss and first few dates.  She’s never cared before, but now she’s left with no choice.  If she doesn’t write an article, at the high profile magazine she works at, about how to advance a relationship to the next step, then her arch nemesis’ article will be printed instead.  But Julie has only written what she knows.  So she needs help finding a man who will take her to that next step, who she won’t get attached to and can dump at the end of it all.  Her friend finds her mark.  A boring suit who works in Wall Street.  But that suit, Mitchel, has other plans.  He’s just made a bet with his friend that he can date, woo, and not fall in love or have a long term relationship with the next woman he goes on a few dates with.  See, he just got out of another long term relationship.  If he wins, then he gets amazing seats to Yankee games, but if he loses then he switches offices with his buddy.  Mitchell’s friend sets the mark on Julie.  What unfolds is constant entertainment.

It was happening.
After six years with a flawless record, the queen of dating had just done the unthinkable.
She’d failed to land the second date.

Julie is used to being at the top of her game and having control of her dating life.  But when Mitchell enters her life, she keeps get shaken around and left a little confused.  Mitchell clearly isn’t what she expected, and it was fun to watch Julie slip into the unknown.  But there’s so much more to Julie then what meets the eye.  She has so many layers buried underneath her.  She is pain, she is closed off, yet she is successful and exceedingly skilled in the dating world.  Ha, until Mitchell that is.  I loved Julie and felt a connection to her, as though she was a close friend.  A close friend that I desperately wanted a happily ever after for.

Julie took a deep breath and looked at him again. Maybe she was underestimating him. Julie braced herself and waited for it. The zing, the sizzle. And she felt … absolutely nothing. He was like dry toast.

Mitchell, how deceiving you were.  While at first glance he screamed boring and practical, his personality was shockingly wild.  Mitchell was control, sexy and a heart of gold…….for the most part.  We all have our flaws, so of course Mitchell is going to also.  But regardless of his mistakes, it’s impossible not to swoon!  I love that he called out Julie when she tried to play games with him.  I love when he pushed Julie out of her comfort zone.  Oh, and I love that he was downright seductive when he told Julie what to do.  Be prepared for Mitchell to win your heart and leave you hot, flustered and fanning your face!

Her hands slid up behind his neck, her nails scraping lightly at his skin as though wanting to mark him.  She wanted to leave a mark on him.  Mark him the way he seemed to be marking her very soul.  Mitchell growled before his mouth slammed down on hers.

After the Kiss was lovely, funny and gut wrenching.  Probably one of my favorite things about Lauren Layne books, besides the characters, emotions and storyline, is that she has this amazing ability to make her books hot yet classy.  It makes me love her books that much more!  This is a fantastic book that I can’t recommend highly enough!

P.S. One of my favorite quotes which is spoilerish…. View Spoiler »

The Return: A Titan Novel by Jennifer L. Armentrout – The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…   It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.  Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.  But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.  Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

Synopsis:

Mesdames et Messieurs, I’m pleased to announce that… this awesomeness of a book is my first 5-stars rating for a graphic novel! Prepare yourself for the love!

Remember how I was amazed by the storyline of the first Volume? Scratch that : this one is even better. That’s simple, we never seem to be able to breathe the whole time and the alternative POV bring more tension to the story, until we just can’t put it down. Moreover, Hazel’s narration, slightly ironic, allows us to see things differently – to produce a more complete picture of the consequences of those actions. I’m not going to lie, her comments cracked me up. Oh! And we get to learn how Marco and Alana met! How awesome is that?

What can I say? I’m in love with these characters. First, Alana. Oh, this wingy could be my BBF : she’s funny, brave, fierce, yet she loses her confidence sometimes (what? Create a belly button can be scary!) but never let someone belittle herself and the choices she made. As for Marko, well, is it bad if I’m a step away from adding him in my book boyfriend list? I know, I know, horns and all that stuff, but I can’t help, he’s all kind of adorable, naturally charming, and I found myself swooning more often than not. Yep. Swooning. If I had a couple of hours to write this review (which I don’t), I’d add words and words to describe how much I enjoyed following Isabelle (best babysitter ever), The Will, his tentacles partner… But the only thing you need to know is the fact that there isn’t any useless character, as they all bring something fascinating to the story.

Let’s talk about my favorite moments, shall we? → Don’t get fooled, the numbers here do not correspond to a rank or something like that : I’m fully unable to do something as accurate as a ranking, duh.

1) Let’s spread the love with the meet-cute

2) Feel the urge to kill this Lying cat.

3) The reading scenes : yes, I’m a romantic like that.

4) Of course, the belly-button.

5) Sexy Alana rocks. You know what I’m talking about.

6) The crazy mouse doctor. I can’t even explain clearly why I couldn’t stop laughing, but well, I couldn’t.

Well. I have to stop here otherwise I’ll tell you the entire story. I guess you just have to read it to find out.

Synopsis:

Cassel comes from a shady, magical family of con artists and grifters. He doesn't fit in at home or at school, so he's used to feeling like an outsider. He's also used to feeling guilty; he killed his best friend, Lila, years ago.

But when Cassel begins to have strange dreams about a white cat, and people around him are losing their memories, he starts to wonder what really happened to Lila. In his search for answers, he discovers a wicked plot for power that seems certain to succeed. But Cassel has other ideas and a plan to con the conmen.

Lie until even you believe it-that’s the real secret of lying. The only way to have absolutely no tells.
Too bad I’m not quite there yet.

When I try to think of a word that reminds me of this book, the most forthcoming is just this: Weird. This book was all kinds of weird. But, when I take the time to really delve deeper and actually peel back the layers of this intricate story-line, I begin to ‘see’ so many more words pop into my mind: Haunting, clever, mesmerizing, addicting…sweet. There are so many ways to look at a story and if you filter all the mystery out of the words, then it does, in fact, come off as a super weird book. But when you totally immerse yourself and ask ‘Why is this happening?’, ‘What triggered this?’, ‘Where the hell is this going?’, I swear that you’ll find yourself racing through the pages and before you know it, you’ll be closing the book. It’s that kind of story.

I don’t want to be a monster, but maybe it’s too late to be anything else.

Cassel is one of those characters that really gets under your skin. You don’t quite know why you like him, but you find yourself laughing at his sarcasm, feeling pain for this kid who grew up feeling like the most insignificant member of his family. You find yourself smiling at his charm and your heart breaking when he thinks of Lila, his childhood best friend (and only friend), and the girl he killed years ago. This sounds shady as fuck, I’ll give you that, but in this world, everyone wears gloves to hide their ‘curse’ and to prevent their touch from doing irreparable damage by making contact with someone’s skin. This is a world where children grow up around con workers as mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers. Even if you aren’t involved with the con work, there’s still a chance you’ve been ‘cursed’ and are considered a worker. This simply means you might have a touch that causes selective memory loss, luck, death, etc. But with each of these ‘gifts’ there is ample cost-No gift in their world comes without a price.

I hate that I love this. I hate that the adrenaline pumping through the roots of my body is filling me with giddy glee. I’m not a good person.

You’re probably still wondering about how he murdered his best friend and the girl he’s always been in love with, right? I didn’t know how I’d feel about it, personally. But, for whatever reason, I found myself identifying with him, sympathizing for him, hoping it was all a misunderstanding and that he had been worked. See, Cassel is the only one in his family without a gift-he is the only non-curse worker. I think this made him a really sweet and relatable character, and all the more identifiable as someone who had significantly screwed up in his past. And, more than that, it was devastating to see how much he just wanted his brothers to love him and accept him, but instead they grew up stomping him under their foot as if he was an insignificant piece of trash, just because they could. Now, I can’t say nothin’ about anythin’ but I will say this-If you grew up with a deplorable family that did deplorable things…what keeps them from conning you?

Marks think they can get something for nothing.
Marks think they can get what they don’t deserve and could never deserve.
Marks are stupid and pathetic and sad.
…..
Marks forget that whenever something’s too good to be true, that’s because it’s a con.

At times I found this to be very dark and even somewhat disturbing, but that was more at the beginning. Once I began to see everything unwind, it all started to make sense and I became fully immersed in figuring out what was wrong with the distorted picture we were being given. Lies upon lies, and betrayals on top of betrayals, we don’t get a clear picture until the end-and even then it’s like looking through fractured glass. It was excellent.

The easiest lies to tell are the ones you want to be true.

Altogether an amazing story that I couldn’t put down even for a minute. More than once I was covering my mouth with my hand to stifle a gasp and begging for a better end than what was coming for Cassel. In a way, this book was almost told through an unreliable source’s eyes and we are left wondering what’s reality and what’s make-believe. I loved this aspect. Each time we learned something, we realized there was so much more to the story and it never really stopped growing as a plot, it never really and truly ended. So, I absolutely cannot wait to start book two. If it’s even half as good as this one I will be ecstatic…but more than that, I can’t wait to see what becomes of Cassel and his new-found ‘friends.’ He’s still trying to figure all that out. And that cliffhanger-agh!!!

BOOK REVIEW – Skin Deep (Legion #2) by Brandon Sanderson

BOOK REVIEW – Skin Deep (Legion #2) by Brandon SandersonSkin Deep (Legion #2)
by Brandon Sanderson

Synopsis:

Stephen Leeds, AKA “Legion,” is a man whose unique mental condition allows him to generate a multitude of personae: hallucinatory entities with a wide variety of personal characteristics and a vast array of highly specialized skills. As the new story begins, Leeds and his “aspects” are hired by I3 (Innovative Information Incorporated) to recover a corpse stolen from the local morgue. But there’s a catch. The corpse is that of a pioneer in the field of experimental biotechnology, a man whose work concerned the use of the human body as a massive storage device. He may have embedded something in the cells of his now dead body. And that something might be dangerous…

Why can I say with with absolute confidence that Skin Deep is an highly satisfying SF thriller?

Let’s start a quick investigation…

Evidence #1 : ♟The plot is brilliant.

Yeah, great, whatever,” J.C. said.
” Emotions and metaphors and stuff. Look, we’ve got a problem.”

Captivating and fast-paced, this thriller kept me enthralled from the beginning to the end. I didn’t guess who the bad guys were, well, to sum-up, I hadn’t any clue of anything before Stephen.

What have we got here?

– Some computers genetic engineers who drove some weird experiments and lose a corpse – and we follow Stephen and his aspects while they investigate about it.

“Freaks,” J.C. said, shifting uncomfortably.
” This is going to be about zombies. I’m calling it now.”

Noooo. That’s more of a data encoding process you know? Completely harmless, I’m telling you.

“Speak dumb person, please,” J.C. said.”

Evidence #2 : ✎ The writing  is compelling, precise without never being heavy, making our reading experience pretty addictive.

“It was an unintended result that is perfectly managable, Laramie said, ” and only dangerous if used maligny. And why would anyone want to do that?”
We all stared at him for a moment.
“Let’s shoot him,” J.C. said.”

Evidence #3 : ✌ The characterization  is So. Damn. Good.

That’s crazy when we think about it, but these hallucinations are more flesh-out than many characters we find in a lot of books. I loved every single of them, and especially J.C who appears to be completely delusional but whose comments and reactions were so enjoyable I couldn’t help but root for him. And pat his head sometimes. Brave J.C.

Icing on the cake, the fact that this book deals with insanity makes the reader properly think about what being crazy really is.

At what point does the society decide that we’re crazy?

When we have hallucinations?
When we provide them rooms to live in?
When the differences between you and them are becoming increasingly blurred?

I’ll let Stephen gives the speech here :

“The longer I’ve lived, the more I’ve realized everyone is neurotic in their own individual way. I have control of my psychoses. How about you?”

Conclusion : That was quite impressive! There’s better be another book someday.

You can find the fun picture here.
