Review:

*Spoilers for Sins and Needles* *If you’re on Team Javier, then you’ll probably want to skip this review*

I loved Sins & Needles (My 5 Star Review can be found – here)!  I tumbled happily into Ellie and Camden’s world, and fell madly in love with their twisted story.  But I was a little nervous to start the second book, Shooting Stars.  Because I was terrified of what could happen since Javier had captured Ellie.  Would she kiss him, touch him, do more?  Would her old feelings slowly reappear?  Would she betray Camden?  The Camden I am obsessed with and love!  So I realized that I needed to have a better understanding of Ellie and her past.  I wanted to know why she fell in love with Javier.  I wanted to see exactly what their love was like.  And I was hoping that I would slowly fall in love with their past.  That way I wouldn’t be resentful or hold a grudge if Ellie did something stupid.  I know, I know, I’m making a HUGE guess on what could happen in book #2!  But it could happen, and I like to be emotionally prepared lol.  BUT, I should have stuck with my gut reaction while I contemplated reading this book, because it screamed at me to avoid this story at all costs!  I had a feeling that I would loathe watching Ellie with Javier be together and I was so right.  I hated Ellie and Javier together.  Hell I hated every single thing about Javier!

I could probably write a few pages on all of the reasons why I hate Javier, but I won’t.  I’ll just list my top three reasons instead. 🙂

Strike #1 – Instead of Javier coming off as sexy and suave, he just kept reminding me of a snake.  It felt as though he could wiggle himself out of any situation.  Time and time again he would slither out from underneath yet another sin that he would commit. I could rant about him asking for redemption (which I don’t think he deserves). but instead I’ll share a quote that made me shudder and laugh because SEE he is a snake! (Ellie went by Eden in the past)

“Eden,” he whispered, squeezing my hand.
I looked up at him. He looked so serious, his dark brows knitted together.
“You’ve gotten under my skin,” he said.
I wasn’t expecting that.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to shed you.”

Strike #2 – I hated the way he talked about sex.  His words felt dirty and not in the good way.  When Camden would talk about sex or talk while they were having sex…..ohhh sigh……it felt as though the words were pouring out of his heart.  You could feel the passion.  It was sexy and beautiful.  But with Javier, it never felt as though he was talking from his heart or his soul.  Maybe it’s because he doesn’t have either? (sorry, I have to throw a dig in here and there lol)  Here’s his idea of sexy, which definitely isn’t the same as mine.

“I want to come on every inch of your body,” he whispered, and somehow it didn’t sound dirty at all. It sounded clean, pure, like rainwater. “I want to rub it in you, like this, until it’s a part of your skin. I want to stain you, Eden. I want myself embedded in your skin, in your heart, in your soul.”

Strike #3 – I become annoyed when Javier would talk about owning Ellie or having her surrender to him.  No.  Just no.  Again, not sexy in my eyes.

“I won’t hurt you,” he said, reading my thoughts. “But you can’t just hand over your virginity to me, Eden. I have to take it from you. I have to make you surrender to me , to everything, in every way possible. I want your heart, your soul, and your body. I want the you that you’re hiding deep inside. I must have her.”

So yeah, I despise Javier.  I tried my hardest to find anything redeemable or attractive in him, but I found nothing.  Nothing at all.  So now I am counting the seconds until Camden comes roaring back into the series and knocks Javier out for good!  Or kills him.  Tomatoes tomato, cause you know that either way will be fine by me as long as it happens.  Keeping my fingers crossed!  Come on Camden!!!

Review:

I fell madly in love with this story!  Frisk Me was a dynamic blend of laughter, sarcasm, sexiness and characters that found their way into my heart.  But in all honestly, I was nervous to start this book.  I struggled with the idea that a police story could be fun and sexy.  BUT the first page alone proved me SO wrong because I was already smiling.  Never again will I second guess or question the storyline or type of characters in a Lauren Layne book!  Because the stories and characters she creates are always amazing!  They make me laugh, smile, cry and fall hopelessly in love with them.  Her stories are the kind that stick with you for a long time to come and that you want all of your friends to read!  You must meet Luc and Ava!

Luc Moretti, sigh.  He is from an Italian family whose blood runs in the force.  His three brothers are also cops and his father just retired as a police commissioner in the NYPD.  He is courageous but not a big fan of being pegged as a hero in the public eye.  A little girl fell off of a bridge and without a second thought, Luc jumped in, swam her to shore and did mouth to mouth to bring her back to life.  The problem was it was captured on someone’s phone and everyone knows about his heroic act.  While he wants his life back to normal since he was just doing his job (love his modesty), enter Ava Sims.  She’s a correspondent from CBC and wants to run a three-hour national special on him and the NYPD.  And Luc has no option but to oblige.

I loved Luc!  He has such a sweet heart.  The thoughtful gestures he would do for Ava melted me into a smiling puddle of goo.  And on top of that he was also humble, charismatic, wounded, funny, sexy and such a good guy!  But you know what the icing on the cake was?  He had a way of twisting his words or a situation into something sexier than it should have been.  It lit up my face every single time he did it!  So yeah, Luc is definitely getting added to my list of book boyfriends.  I never once thought I’d have a cop on there!  But now I do lol!

Like many of her other books, we also get to see Ava’s side of the story.  Ava is definitely a multi-faceted person, and while I loved her personal side, sometimes I didn’t always see eye to eye with her business side.  You see, there is the calculated, driven women that she portrays to the majority of the world, but when she kicks off her high heels and changes into her flip-flops then the real Ava is in full effect.  She is unsure, funny, a smart ass and very perceptive.  She was extremely easy to like and connect with.  But of course my favorites parts of her was when she was interacting with Luc.  Because the sarcasm between the two of them created the perfect amount of sexual tension and made me laugh so hard at their antics.  They were characters that I understood inside out and I couldn’t get enough of them!

Another thing I couldn’t get enough of was Luc’s family!  They interfered in the best of ways and oh my gosh they were hilarious, loving and looked out for one another.  Their weekly get togethers always made me laugh and feel all warm and cozy in my heart.  It was wonderful to see such a strong family unit that felt real in a book!  But you want to know who my favorite family member was…well besides Luc?  Nona, his Grandma.  She is a hoot, and then some!  Just try reading her scenes without laughing hysterically, I dare you!

So yeah, I loved this book!  I laughed and cried hysterically, and I am so excited that I get to read more about these characters!  Because the next book in this series is about Luc’s brother, Anthony.  He’s grumpy hmmm or maybe more guarded then Luc, but he is intriguing and has the Moretti charm so I can’t wait to see what’s in store for him!  Until then, I have to go read another book written by this author.  Lauren Layne’s writing and characters are that addicting!

Interview:
  1. What is something we would be surprised to learn about Luc and Ava?

That they’re not each other’s type!! Luc is laidback and charming, and prefers women who are equally low-key and friendly. Ava is all sharp-edges and cynicism, and is accustomed to dating guys who are equally edgy. The fact that they want the other person in spite of themselves is what makes the story so fun 🙂 . He can’t figure out why he wants this prickly ambitious nightmare, and she can’t figure out why she’s so drawn to a blue-collar, quick-with-a-smile cop.

  1. If you had to cast Luc and Ava, would you prefer them to be known or unknown actors?  Anyone in mind?

I’ve had the HARDEST time finding a celebrity look alike for Luc. I know that he has the likable steadiness of Nick from the TV show Grimm, and he has the searing good looks of Josh Duhamel, and the sheer yumminess of Ryan Gosling’s upper body … but no one guy was quite right for him!

As for Ava, from the very beginning she has ALWAYS been Minka Kelly.

(I have to say that I sighed when I read the Josh Duhamel comment.  I’ve had a serious crush on him since he first appeared on tv back in 1999!-Jen)

  1. What was your favorite scene to write in Frisk Me?

Definitely any scene that involves Nonna, especially when she has her yoga mat out!  🙂

  1. What inspired you to write about cops?

You know, in full disclosure, a series about NYC cops was on my publisher’s wish list. My agent mentioned it to me, thinking I might be a good fit since I’d lived in New York, and I was pretty much on my tippy-toes, hand raised in the air like, “Ooh, me me me me!”

  1. What is your favorite quality to write in a character?

I’m a sucker for a witty character; I have so much respect for people who are always ready with a one-liner, and I just love when a character is born into my head with this sort of wittiness all ready to go.

  1. The next book in the series is Steal Me which is going to be about Luc’s brother, Anthony.  Can you tell us a little bit more about what his story will be about?

Excuse me for a moment while I happy sigh. Anthony’s story was a little different for me … there’s a sweetness to Anthony and Maggie’s love story that really caught me off guard. Basically, Anthony is a workaholic who has zero time for relationships. Maggie is the sweetheart waitress at the diner his family frequents. They set off sparks from the very beginning, but it’s not until Maggie becomes the key witness in a case he’s working on that they realize there’s so much more physical chemistry between them. There’s so much sexual tension in this story, I swear you will FEEL the want.

Synopsis:

Ellie Watt is used to starting over. The daughter of a grifting team, Ellie spent her childhood being used as a pawn in her parents' latest scam. Now she’s much older, wiser and ready to give her con artist life a rest. But returning to the dry desert town of Palm Valley, California means one more temptation than she bargained for – Camden McQueen. Once known as the high school weirdo, Camden is bigger and badder than the boy he used to be and a talented tattoo artist with his own thriving business. Ellie’s counting on Camden still being in love with her but what she’s not counting on is how easily unrequited love can turn into obsession over time. When Camden discovers Ellie’s plan to con him, he makes her a deal she doesn’t dare refuse, but her freedom comes with a price and it’s one that takes both Ellie and Camden down a dangerous road.

Review:

Sins & Needles slowly dragged me in, and once it had me in it’s clutches, it had a death grip on my heart!  I am still left stuttering, trying to wrap my head around what I just read.  I am completely astonished and blown away by what unfolded in front of me.  It’s unlike anything that I have ever read before.  By the last page I had no clue whether I wanted to smile, laugh, cry, or scream.  My emotions were that twisted, just like the story was.  If you are looking for an insanely addicting yet utterly messed up book, then this is for you!

When I was a child, I was never in a town long enough to get enrolled in the softball team, which was a shame— because as the cue cracked against the side of his bald head, I realized it could have been a second career. – Ellie

Ellie Watt is a grifter, just like her parents taught her to be.  But after getting caught in a con, she is in need of a break.  In pursuit of a fresh start, she heads to the only place that has ever felt like home.  Her Uncle’s ranch.  But for Ellie, she can’t stop what is ingrained in her.  And she has her next mark in sight.  Camden McQueen.  Her one and only true friend from High School.  But Camden has plans of his own, and makes a deal with Ellie that is about to change both of their lives forever.

“You’re a con artist. A liar. A thief. An unredeemable soul. You can’t be reformed. You can’t be saved. You’ll die trying to make the world pay for what it did to you. And you’ll die alone.” – Camden to Ellie

Ellie was insanely difficult to connect with.  She was tough, her heart was buried deep within her, and for the most part it seemed as though she had no conscious or moral compass.  At times I contemplated whether I really liked her.  But throughout the story she earned my sympathy and eventually even my respect.  Who knows if she’ll keep it, because her track record is beyond horrible.  But everything, and I do mean everything that she did intrigued me.  She was dark, twisted and I loved listening to her screwed up mind as she forged along her disturbing path!

My eyes squinted from the light. From the way he was positioned by the window, he almost looked angelic. But angels don’t have tattoos and they certainly don’t have guns in their hands. – Ellie

You will want to meet Camden!  He was such an enigma to me.  He is a talented tattoo artist that is sexy as sin, yet he always seemed to have something simmering below the surface.  He would give these looks or say these phrases that made me pause.  I would question what I just read, because I had to have read that wrong.  But after going back, nope I wasn’t wrong and it made him appear dark and twisted.  Kind of like Ellie.  And there was no way that could be right.  Right?

Holy shit, did Camden just spank me? – Ellie

When Camden and Ellie were together, they were intense, raw and gritty.  I loved that we got to learn their whole sordid history.  At the beginning of the chapters, we would have a flashback to Ellie’s earlier years.  We got to see Camden in High School as a goth who wore a trench coat, black fingernail polish and lipstick.  They banded together and were the outcasts of the school.  Of course no one wanted to be friends with the girl with the constant limp besides Camden.  The history between them created a picture that was whole and made this story amazingly powerful.  By the time I was almost halfway through the book, it refused to be put down.  Sins and Needles became action packed, sizzling sexy, dark, and I can’t recommend this book highly enough!

Synopsis:

The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of
those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control.

But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?

So, this is the 2015 mind-blowing release?

① I’m just so fucking bored. UNDERWHELMED is the word.

② Mare is a selfish brat who can’t shut up one second to look at something else than herself. She keeps acting without thinking and gets numerous people harmed/killed.

③ She’s a special snowflake through and through, because she’s special you know and nothing can be done without her.

④ She’s in a constant need of saving and doesn’t even acknowledge that fact.

⑤ There is a love-triangle (square?) but it’s not what annoys me. The fact that I can’t bring myself to FEEL SOMETHING for any of these (3) male-leads does annoy me, though. Now, as bland and hollow as they are, I still don’t understand what they see exactly in Mare but who am I to judge?

“Why I care, I can’t say”. ME NEITHER, Mare, me neither.

⑥ She’s not sarcastic but just plain rude and oh so WHINY.

⑦ She can’t seem to find any redeeming quality in any other woman. Guess what? I’m not finding any redeeming quality in you either. GIRL HATE EVERYWHERE. Why, oh why do women always hate other women ON SIGHT in these books? Just TELL ME.

Evangeline : “From the way her fingers tighten, I can tell she wants nothing more than to wrap her hands around my throat.” Because reasons

Random Silver girls : “Before I have a chance to take a breath, a pair of girls steps in front of me. Their smiles are fake and cold, just like their eyes.” Because reasons

Her tutor : “I observed,” she clips, already hating me.” Because reasons

I’m not the kindest person of the world by any means, but I never hated someone ON SIGHT. For fuck sake. We will never see men doing that in books and that’s what sickens and maddens me. It spreads the message that we women are sly and hateful. Oh but wait! This is by far the most widespread stereotype about women. Women authors, I’m not thanking you.

⑧ The similarities with Red Rising are just obnoxious. Say the girl who didn’t like Red Rising, though. “And we will rise up. Red as the dawn.” Yeah, right. Never seen this before.

⑨ I’m just so fucking bored, but I already said that, didn’t I? B-bu-but nothing happens!

⑩ Perhaps it __________ be better if there aren’t all these plot ____________. You know, when ____________ want us to believe in a rebellion without even ____________. People are starving but WHO CARES? There is a rebellion but WHO CARES? The Queen can read minds but OMG she can’t guess anything? HOW FUCKING CONVENIENT. View Spoiler »

⑪ The lack of world-building or of any descriptions, really, gave me the impression that the characters walked in a BLANK bubble.

That ending though.

Too bad I don’t care about any of the characters. Waste of my time.

Oh and you people! Please stop SMIRKING! (my Kindle found 38, and my favorite is : “she manages to smirk without moving her lips” I would so love to see that!)

Ps. I’m Team #TheOneWhoWillKillHer *smirks*

“I love being a cop, but I love you more. I’d give up being everybody else’s hero, if you’ll just let me be yours.”

 photo giphy 1_zpsjzyhb8jm.gif

It doesn’t take much for a book to make me happy these days-I’m much pickier and have fifty times the rules I used to. But, in doing so, I’ve found what works. It’s not enough to have a cute boy and a lonely girl and some raunchy love scenes-I need essence. I need a beating heart between each and every page and I want that pulse to continue all the way through the end….Okay, maybe it does take a lot for me to be happy.

But the point in all of this is simple: I am much pickier-therefore, I find more books I enjoy because I sift past the bullshit that used to please me. My tastes have evolved and I have learned what makes a true author. Again, it’s not about making lovable characters, though that is tantamount to the essence of a great plot, but making them come alive-making you live and breathe with them, become them, feel each heart break and quarrel as if you are right there living it with them. Just as I mentioned above-the author has to be able to give the characters a pulse-and Lauren Layne is the QUEEN of all these things.

Luc’s eyebrows lifted. “Old? You’re what, twenty-five?”
“Twenty-eight. And don’t start in on me about how I’m a spring chicken with my whole life ahead of me, because time and age work differently in TV.”
“If I look like the type of guy that would use the phrase ‘spring chicken,’ I need to do some serious reevaluating of my manliness.”

I had mentioned earlier that I skip over tons of books these days, but not once have I thought to evade a Layne novel. It’s not often you find a favorite author who, despite the odds, never disappoints you. Many times you wait and wait and wait for that third book in a trilogy, only to be disappointed when your high expectations are crushed after such a long journey. I’m not going to lie-I have a ‘phobia’ (I say this loosely) of third books in my fantasy/dystopian/sci-fi series-I am so picky and they almost never hold up to my standards and I walk away with a heavy heart. But my favorite author here, she never lets me down. I don’t sit and stew about whether it will work, won’t work, will disappoint me…I just wait.

 photo Charlie-Sheen-I-Dont-Sleep-I-Wait_zpski1flbhj.gif

I sit and wait for netgalley, or whomever, to release the request for a LL novel and I immediately click that beautiful green ‘request’ button. Haven’t read the blurb yet? Who cares. I know, without a doubt, she could write about towelie and the return of Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo, and I wouldn’t bat an eyelash before I requested/read it (though, that would certainly create a lot of trademark problems, I would imagine).

“Not really,” Sawyer said, giving her an apologetic pat on the hand. “So. Who wants to tell me? Are we talking accidental boob brush?”
Ava gave him a glare.
Sawyer’s eyebrow lifted. “Full on cop-a-feel? Duuude.” He reached over to fist-bump Luc, who batted his hand out of the way.
Luc’s partner grinned and drained his beer. “This is nice. Me, Superman, Lois Lane, and unfilled lust.”

I always fangirl over Ms. Layne, but until she gives me a reason not to, I won’t stop. I was skeptical, I’ll admit, about this story. It might be the cover (sorry sorrryyyy!!!! (hides face)), seeing as I am a cover whore, but I dunno, I just always wonder how she will tackle a new story line. In this new series we have Luc Moretti, officer in NYC, and Ava Sims, reporter (AKA his worst nightmare).

But hey, bright side…at least now she knew what an ID was in cop-speak: Indecent exposure.
It also explained why Luc Moretti had changed his mind about letting her tag along. He thought she’d be scared off.
Please. It would take a hell of a lot more than a flaccid penis on a disorderly drunk to scare her off the story.

As the blurb touts, Luc isn’t a cop for the fame, the viral videos, the glory…he just wants to help others-to save and protect them at any cost. But one day his need to be anonymous is obliterated when a video of him risking his life to save a little girl goes viral and CBC sends a reporter to do an ‘American Hero’ story on him.

“Nope.” He moved closer, shifting so that his upper body leaned into hers. “We start with interrogations.”
“And then?” Her voice was flirty and light, but her eyes were pure heat.
His gaze dropped to his hand, which had found its way to her knee somehow.
“Depends. If the cop’s skilled at interrogation, things generally progress to handcuffs…and other things. If the cop’s unsuccessful…”
Luc broke off and shrugged.
Ava looked at him over the top of her wineglass. “Which one are you? The skilled interrogator or the other?”
“Depends.”
“On.”
He leaned in and pressed his lips to her ear. “Whether or not you like handcuffs.”

 photo tumblr_myyyo9mBan1s5zciuo1_500_zps0uhwkgkz.gif

The animosity that ensues when sexy reporter Ava Sims steps on the scene is palpable, even as officer Luc Moretti pleads to his boss not to let this happen. But, more than that, not only does Luc and Ava’s hateful banter ring somewhat false, there are sparks, there is heat, there is chemistry, there is….recognition?

He would do his duty. He always did his duty. With pride.

Luc was absolute perfection (see my profile, section 3, BBF list, seventh down), but aren’t her male leads ALWAYS? His inner turmoil and broken torment are hid beneath a thin veil of sarcastic remarks and well-placed smirks that keep people content and distracted from what’s really there. His mind and soul aren’t at peace and his heart is heavy-there are darker sides to being a cop, but he is still the sweetest and kindest of his brothers-always the peace maker, always the one people want to talk to….Enter Ava.

“Sims, we’ve spent every day of the past week together. You’re practically my second partner on the job, even if you’re in the way more often than not.”
“Hey!”
He held up a hand to stop the protest. “No. You are, and you know it.”
She huffed. “I just wanted to turn on the siren once. Just to try it.”
“Uh huh. You’re telling me it had nothing to do with the fact that it was rush hour and you had to pee?”

Ava Sims gets on every last one of Luc’s nerves-history has them bickering constantly and snarky towards one another every chance they get. But then we get to see little bits and pieces of Ava that the world doesn’t get to see-her slightly skewed, too large glasses, her yoga pants, her damp ponytail and general lack of productiveness on the weekends-and that’s when I started to warm up to her. There was never anything wrong with her per se, but I also didn’t connect with her much at first. Then we began to see this sloppy Ava who, for all of the above reasons, reminds me of my little sister-slop extraordinaire. I swear to god, that is my sister down to a tee, and I LOVED THAT about Ava. I felt this tiny little connection that made me smile as I imagined my sister like this every Friday night after a long work week of dressing up and playing a part.

“Did I mention Miss Sims and I have a history?” he said, knowing it would be exactly the kind of topic change that she would latch on to.
Nonna’s gray eyebrows lifted. “Did you fornicate?”
Luc choked on his beer. “Jesus, no. And there should be a ban against that word.”
“Don’t be prudish, Luca.”

So, yeah, this isn’t my favorite LL novel (I think Blurred Lines might be (maybe?) There are too many-maybe After the Kiss or Broken or The Trouble with Love), but that doesn’t mean I didn’t reach my happy place-because I did. And with a Grandma like Nonna-Oh my GAHD did I laugh out loud with this woman when she and Luc had their hilarious conversations-how could you not laugh and smile constantly? I swear, even if you aren’t prone to laughing out loud like myself, you will-It’s an inevitability because….yoga. Anyway, I can only hope that everyone finds as much happiness out of this book as I did. The tears were falling and my heart was soaring-I was in heaven.

“I love being a cop, but I love you more. I’d give up being everybody else’s hero, if you’ll just let me be yours.”

I mean…how could I not give it 5 stars? Come on.
