Synopsis:

Scarlet's true identity has been revealed, but her future is uncertain. Her forced marriage to Lord Gisbourne threatens Robin and Scarlet's love, and as the royal court descends upon Nottingham for the appointment of a new Sheriff, the people of Nottingham hope that Prince John will appoint their beloved Robin Hood. But Prince John has different plans for Nottingham that revolve around a fateful secret from Scarlet's past even she isn't yet aware of. Forced to participate at court alongside her ruthless husband, Scarlet must bide her time and act the part of a noblewoman-a worthy sacrifice if it means helping Robin's cause and a chance at a future with the man she loves. With a fresh line of intrigue and as much passion as ever, the next chapter in Scarlet's tale will have readers talking once again.

Review:

I have a confession. *deep breath* Lady Thief has become my favorite retelling of Robin Hood.  Ever.  I’m so sorry movies I’ve watched countless times, but this book was absolutely perfect.  But the funny thing is, I started out oh so cautious.  I was beyond nervous that the love triangle would make a reappearance, but thankfully it’s long gone.  In its place are far more sinister things to try to keep Rob and Scar apart, like torturous nightmares and a deranged husband.  Those only added to the list of reasons why I fell so hard for this book.  And here are the rest –

A brave, almost fearless heroine!

“Hurt me if you want, but I’ve felt pain. I know what pain is. And it’s less than love, than loyalty, than hope. You can make me cry, or scream, or whatever else. All that will mean is that I feel the pain, that I’m still alive. And as long as I’m living I can promise I’m not afraid of you, Gisbourne. I’m afraid of sitting quiet while the people that are meant to protect others do their best to hurt them. I’m afraid of people like you and Prince John going by unchecked. That’s what I’m afraid of. I’m stronger than your damn pain, and I do not give up.”

As I said in the first book’s review, it’s a breath of fresh air that Rob, aka Robin Hood, is with a woman that’s his equal!  Scarlet was resourceful, clever, and put herself out there not only to give the townspeople a better life but also to try and give her and Rob a happily ever after.  Her heart and mind always led her on the path to protect others.  Even knowing that she could be the one who had to suffer the consequences.

A book boyfriend that is a true hero.

“These schemes may benefit the people, Scarlet, but I fight for you.” His hands squeezed my waist a little bit, and it made my blood run fast. “I will always fight for you.”

No matter the horrors that Rob had to face, he always fell back into that hero position.  Whether he was the shadow that appeared to help Scar in a situation to protect a child or by trying to win a title against men in power, he was a true hero.  But the way he tried to protect and love Scar shined the brightest to me.  It quickened my heartbeat and made me want to curl into a happy little ball.  I desperately wanted more of those moments.

Side characters who warm your heart with their friendship and loyalty.  John, Mulch and a few new characters that were introduced added the support and commodore that Rob and Scar deserved.  It helped knowing that they had others, besides one another, to help them along the way.  And at times they offered lightheartedness and smiles that were much needed.

Villains who earned their name and then some.

I twisted the gold band on my finger, hating it anew. My time had run out, and my husband were returning to Nottinghamshire.

I thought I only had to be concerned about Gisbourne, but I was dead wrong.  We met an even more sinister man than him.  And between the two of them, I was constantly fearful for Scar and everyone else’s safety!  They didn’t hold back when their wrath was palpable.  Just look to the next point to learn more……

Peril that will gut you like Scarlet’s knife.

“Don’t die, Scar. He doesn’t come back from this if you die.” – Much to Scar

I wasn’t prepared.  Not at all.  Even after learning about the board that was used on Rob, I still didn’t believe things could escalate to the level that they did.  After the scenes had passed, I stared at my kindle in horror.  Yes, nauseating horror rolled around inside of me.  I’m still in shock that some things happened!  But I’m also in awe that Lady Thief was that intense.

Mystery that appears as tiny little drops of clues that I wanted to crush together to discover the truth.

There were quite a few mysteries in Lady Thief, and I loved every moment of trying to figure them out.  Whether it was the motives of the new characters we met or even the old ones we knew so well, there was always something to analyze.  And I have to say I knew it in regards to Scar!!  And that is all, muahaha.

His arms began to loosen, but I fast whispered, “Kiss me, Rob.”

For Scar and Rob, it seems as though no amount of good can ever come into their lives without the bad.  And after that ending, I’m desperate to see what will happen next.  But till then, just know that Lady Thief was cry worthy, sigh inducing, thrilling, horrifying and epic.  Now I’m off to the final book, and I’m beyond nervous!

Synopsis:

Posing as one of Robin Hood's thieves to avoid the evil Lord Gisbourne, Scarlet has kept her identity secret from all of Nottinghamshire. Only Big John and Robin Hood know the truth-that the agile thief posing as a whip of a boy is actually a fearless young woman with a secret past. It's getting harder to hide as Gisbourne's camp seeks to find Scarlet and drive Robin Hood out of Nottinghamshire.

But Scarlet's instinct for self-preservation is at war with a strong sense of responsibility to the people who took her in when she was on the run, and she finds it's not so easy to turn her back on her band and townspeople. As Gisbourne draws closer to Scarlet and puts innocent lives at risk, she must decide how much the people of Nottinghamshire mean to her, especially John Little, a flirtatious fellow outlaw, and Robin, whose quick smiles and temper have the rare power to unsettle Scarlet. Full of exciting action, secrets, and romance, this imaginative retelling of the classic tale will have readers following every move of Robin Hood and band of thieves.

Review:

Scarlet was an adventurous story that was filled to the brim with excitement and hardships at many turns.  I was a little nervous stepping into a book that contained characters that I hold near and dear to my heart, but I loved how Scarlet felt familiar yet was uniquely different at the same time!  While I did have some issues with a love triangle, I can’t wait to see what happens with the rest of this trilogy.  Especially after that fabulous life and death ending!

I swallowed. “We watch each others’ backs.”
He nodded. “Precisely.”

One of my favorite changes to this story is the addition of a female in Robin Hood’s group.  She goes by Will Scarlet, or Scar as their little band call her.  The majority of the townspeople believe that she is a boy, but a select few know her secret.  And it was so much fun seeing the female being painted as the thief within their group!  As someone who loves females with a backbone and can stand on their own, I was ecstatic with Robin Hood’s possible love interest.  In the previous stories, Robin Hood was always paired with a woman who needs to be rescued or taken care of, which always bothered me.  Robin Hood deserves a fighter, a woman who can be his equal and stand by his side!  And while Scarlet is that woman, there’s one small problem.  She really isn’t his.

“…..if you stay, I’ll keep you safe as best I can.” – Rob to Scar

And here lies my struggle with this book and Scarlet.  She tested my patience time and time again by showing interest in both John (aka John Little) and Rob (aka Robin Hood).  I felt as though she toyed with them throughout the story.  BUT toy isn’t the correct word because she is only 18 and doesn’t have any experience with love or relationships.  Yet I was left feeling as though I wanted to shake her while yelling at her to make up her mind.  But I still liked Scarlet because her heart was in the right place so many times.  Not only by protecting the townspeople, but her little group too.  She put her life on the line for so many of them again and again, which made for some amazing perilous situations.

He caught my wrist before I were full out the door. “Scar,” he said, rough, like rocks were running over his tongue. “I have done so many unforgivable things in my life. Don’t let failing to save you be another.”

And while I’m talking about struggles, some may have a few issues with the writing.  But please know that I absolutely adored the way this story was written!  I easily adapted into how the words came across, and it seemed like a unique mix of past, present, and dialect that would easily be found from that time period.

He pressed my cheek with the cloth again, and then his hand touched my cheek, hot after the cold water. “I hate seeing you hurt.”
The air whooshed from my chest but I rolled my eyes ’stead of letting on. “No one gets all bent up over John being bruised.”
He stepped back, looking into my eyes. I felt like my eyes were unprotected without my hat.
“Scar, you walked in here covered in blood. You don’t see how that would upset us?”
“No.”
He caught my chin in his fingers. “Like it or not, Scar, we’re your friends. We care about you. I care about you.”

You know what else I loved?  Rob!  He was quiet yet powerful, and he had a heart of gold.  He tried so hard to take care of others who weren’t able to care for themselves.  And he wore their pain and suffering heavily on his shoulders, while keeping it all to himself.  It even felt as though he purposely contradicted himself so others wouldn’t know how he felt.  He did this multiple times with Scarlet, and I was dying to know the truth and his inner thoughts!  I can’t wait to learn more about Rob as the trilogy unfolds!

He grabbed my arms, bringing me close to his face, and his eyes looked like the ocean, deep and dark and full of things I knew nothing ’bout. “We don’t lie to each other, Scar. Especially not about things that mean I might lose you.”
My breath froze in my chest. Did he just say that?
He let me go. “Because losing one member would put the whole band at risk. Do you understand?”

John and Much rounded out their little group, and the story proceeds with them trying to protect the townspeople from the evil Sheriff of Nottingham.  Their group of four steal and loot all in the name of the greater good, yet twists unfold that take a typical Robin Hood story-line into another area.  Because Scarlet is being hunted by an evil Lord, Gisbourne.  And with him close on their tails, everything is about to spiral out of control.  This is definitely a world you should step into.  And I can’t wait to see what is going to happen after that fabulous, perilous ending!!

P.S. Random fact – I absolutely adore the Disney and Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves movies, so with those story-lines floating around in my head, I dove right into Scarlet.  This story was just as unique as those two movies are from each other.  I’m so very happy about that!

Jen’s Book Boyfriends:
obsidian a lux novel jennifer l. armentrout Review Anew The Archers of Avalon by Chelsea Fine Review The Union by T.H. Hernandez Review the iron king julie kagawa Review Broken Skies theresa kay Review

1. Daemon BlackObsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Daemon will lull you into his web and even though you’ll want to kick him or punch him, you know you’ll never be able to do it. Because Daemon is the embodiment of infuriating sexiness. And heaven help me, but I fell for him hard.

2. Tristan ArcherAnew (The Archers of Avalon #1) by Chelsea Fine – Tristan’s dark, sarcastic humor was intoxicating. His selflessness and bravery was endearing. And his love and interactions with Scarlett were incredibly butterfly inducing.

3. CyrusThe Union (The Union #1) by T.H. Hernandez – Cyrus was one of those characters that captured your attention in a quiet yet bold and confident way.  Whether it was baring his soul to Evan, or taking control of a military like tactic.  There was no way I couldn’t love him.

4. Prince AshThe Iron King (The Iron Fey #1) by Julie Kagawa – Prince Ash came across as such a cold-hearted jerk, yet it was so much fun getting to watch his ice facade melt away!  Because underneath that frozen exterior was loyalty, protectiveness, trust worthiness, and sarcasm that warmed my heart!

5. LirBroken Skies (Broken Skies #1) by Theresa Kay – Lir was someone I could honestly not get enough of!  He was thoughtful and smart.  He was gentle and sweet.  And he was sexy and sarcastic.  Looking above I guess I have a soft spot for sarcastic guys lol!  But my favorite thing about him was how he eventually treated Jax.  It melted my heart.

the return titan jennifer armentrout Review The Immortal Rules Julie Kagawa Review scarlet a.c. gaughen Review True of Blood Witch Fairy Bonnie Lamer

6. SethThe Return (Titan #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout – I always ached for Seth, because even though he could be a pompous ass or a manipulative little shit at times, there was always that part of him that constantly suffered (he first appeared in the Covenant Series).  He was cocky, playful and we got to see even more of why Seth was someone who was a true friend and deserved our trust and whole heart.

7. ZekeThe Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa – Zeke made me want to sneak into this horrific world, just to see him for myself.  He was a beautiful person inside and out, but his heart was by far my favorite part of him.  His bravery and love for Allie, the vampire, made me fall for him even harder.

8. Rob aka Robin HoodScarlet (Scarlet #1) by A.C. Gaughen – He was a true hero with a heart of gold.   He tried so hard to take care of others who weren’t able to care for themselves.  And he wore their pain and suffering heavily on his shoulders, while keeping it all to himself.  He constantly quickened my heartbeat and made me want to curl into a happy little ball.

9. Kallen True of Blood (Witch Fairy #1) by Bonnie Lamer – 3 years ago I decided to step back into the reading world and picked up this book.  I had no clue I could fall for a character until I met Kallen.  He became my first book boyfriend and got me back into reading!  He was extremely pragmatic and came across as haughty, but I knew there was more going on.  He was intoxicating and addicting and I fell madly in love the more I got to know him.  Thank you Kallen for allowing me to meet all of the other men I love above!

1. Raffe- Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days #1) by Susan Ee – Raffe is, and probably always will be, my number one book boyfriend. From the moment his snarky ass started taking care of Penryn, I knew I was a goner. He tried his hardest not to fall for the daughter of man…but she was always his to love and protect.

2. Rob (Robin Hood)- Scarlet (Scarlet #1) by A.C. Gaughen – I just…I mean…I can’t even. From the moment I met this jealous and closed off boy, I knew his love for Scar would be my undoing. Hiding his true feelings, but protecting her at the cost of his own life time and again…He could never NOT be on my top BBF list.

3. Jazz (Jasper Dent)- I Hunt Killers (Jasper Dent #1) by Barry Lyga – Tortured, misguided, and determined to not become like his old man, Jazz was an IMMEDIATE BBF. He is literally everything. His loyalty, protectiveness, and beautifully fucked up mind will always, always be with me. Not a week goes by I don’t think of him.

4. Nox- Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die #1) by Danielle Paige – Attitude and a nasty demeanor towards Amy from the very beginning make it seem as if he’d rather her thrown off a cliff than a part of his team…but wait….did they just make googly eyes at one another??? AGHH it’s hate at first sight. Who said the best relationships don’t start off with a little animosity (ultimately leading to that protectiveness I so adore). 5. Elias- An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes #1) by Sabaa Tahir – TORTURED. LOYAL. SOLDIER. BEST OF HIS CLASS. BADASS. BETRAYER?? This boy stole my heart from his first POV. Nothing compares to a weapon-wielding soldier whose heart is as good as gold. Broken down and tested to the brink of his abilities…his honor will win you over-UNDOUBTEDLY.

6. Cal-  Red Queen (Red Queen #1) by Victoria Aveyard – Ahhh that lovely weakness for princes is showing again…but not just any prince-a soldier prince. Kind-hearted, loyal, would do anything for Mare and his brother, Maven…and yet another soldier whose heart is easily torn to shreds because of his trusting nature and indisputable kindness.

7. Connor- Unwind (Unwind Dystology #1) by Neal Shusterman – Bad boy. Trouble maker. And at the end of his life because his parents have finally had enough. I can’t even begin to explain how he captured my heart from chapter one. He may have made lots of mistakes…but Risa is not a mistake he’s willing to make-He’d do absolutely anything for her. Aww…these kind-hearted bad boys just stole the show, didn’t they??

8. Peeta Mellark- The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins – Always and will forever be an absolute favorite. This series stole my heart in 2012, and it never gave it back. But after re-reading THG series this past year (4th time), I realized just how quick I was to forget the boy with the bread. Tsk tsk on me.

9. Aiden- Half-Blood (Covenant #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Ahhh there’s apparently a theme here, for me. Yet another soldier that would risk it all for his girl. And hey, perhaps my first soldier BBF. I will NEVER forget my dear Aiden. His intense love for Alex is almost as unforgettable as his amazing gray eyes…whoops. I LOVE HIM (ALL OF THE BOYS, ACTUALLY).

10. Ethan- Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires #1) by Chloe Neill – I’ve always hated insta-love, but from the first moment we met Ethan in book one, his snarky attitude and immediate one eyebrow raise ensnared me and caused me to eat crow. I will love him forever – unconditionally. My only vampire BBF and perhaps it will always be this way.

1. Fitz – Assassin’s Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy #1) by Robin Hobb – Because this lonely and rejected boy who’s trying to find his place as an assassin? He is filled with flaws but he is trying so hard and his evolution is both realistic and heart-wrenching, I can’t even express how much I adore him. Damn, since I’ve met him more than 10 years ago, none of the characters I read about could take his place in my heart. None of them.

2. Jorg of Ancrath – Prince of Thorns (The Broken Empire #1) by Mark Lawrence – He’s not a BBF per se – let’s be honest, my favorite little cutter is the biggest asshole I’ve ever read about. So, no, thank you. Yet his sarcasm, his complex, tortured and straight-on evil personality made him unforgettable.

3. Froi – Froi of the Exile (The Lumatere Chronicles #2) by Melina Marchetta – What could be more interesting than a man who’s always seeking his place in the world and who tries to refrain himself without never forgetting who he is? What I adored in his personality is the fact that he’s able to see behind the scenes and never hastily judges someone. No, Froi thinks, analyses – and above all that, loves and hates with such passion, craves for some attention – that tortured boy who’s trying so hard to be worthy captured my heart and broke it while he was at it.

4. Laurent Captive Prince : Volume One (Captive Prince #1) by C.S. Pacat – You can’t even imagine how deep I fell for Laurent. Give me a tortured, complex end borderline psycho heart, I’ll be intrigued. Add a twisted and convoluted mind, I’ll lose my breath. Make him genuinely smile and I’ll love him forever. God, how he made me laugh. I adore him and I MISS HIM ALREADY.

5. Todd Hewitt  The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking #1) by Patrick Ness – Oh, you, little boy who can’t kill and can’t think straight with all that noise and feels so lonely, you’ve won me from the first page. Throughout the trilogy, we have the chance to be witnesses while he’s growing up, becoming a man who we can be proud of. All of his feelings seem so real, so understandable, I couldn’t help to feel my heart actually ache for him.

6. Peeta Mellark The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins – I know, I know, not my most original move. But tell me, how can I resist this loyal, endearing and adorable male-lead? *stares* I’ll tell you this, I can’t.

7. Prince Ash – The Iron King (The Iron Fey #1) by Julie Kagawa – Because I needed a Prince somewhere. Okay, I lied. Forget all the broody and wounded male-lead you know : none of them can beat him. Seriously : It took him only one apparition to warm my heart and send a flutter of emotions through me like crazy.

8. Benvolio – Prince of Shadows by Rachel Caine – Benvolio is such a complex and captivating character. I shall marry him someday. He is trust-worthy and loyal where Romeo is charming, but restlessly fights against his own inner demons, either impossible feelings or thirst for blood.

9. Kaz Brekker Six of Crows (Six of Crows #1) by Leigh Bardugo Kaz is relentless in his scheming and planning, and just at the moment you think that you finally get his personality, he takes a decision so ruthless that you stand there, wide-eyed. Of course I love him, what do you think, I never could resist snarky criminals who slowly realize that this thing beating wildy, here? That’s their heart.

10. Reyn Khuprus – Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders #1) by Robin Hobb – Aww, my Rain Wilder. Forever a favorite. We hope you had fun looking through our list of Favorite Book Boyfriends From Paranormal – Science Fiction – Dystopian & Fantasy Worlds!

Synopsis:

"This was Vere, voluptuous and decadent, country of honeyed poison"

Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the truthful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master Prince Laurent epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else...

TRIGGER WARNING : graphic violence, rape, slavery

Oh, the dilemma. Review it? Jump on book 2? Review it? Jump on book 2? Review it? Jump on book 2?

Eenie meenie miney mo

Eenie meenie miney mo

Oh, screw it. I swear that I’ll write a real review of Captive Prince: Volume One because Helloooo, it deserves ones, but for now my excitation and eagerness to freaking KNOW what will happen leads me to shorten my ramble and only give you reduced information (perhaps that’s for the best) (you don’t want to read my entire rambling) (trust me)

☑ Welcome to a harsh and unforgiving world where slavery (including sexual), torture and rape are common practice (including towards youngers, which makes the book so fucking hard to stomach at times). I know, I know, YIKES, but trust me, if I could handle it it’s only thanks to C.S. Pacat‘s talent for dealing with these awful subjects without never showing any form of indulgence towards them. Indeed it’s obvious from the start that Damen, the MC, doesn’t condone nor accept Vere’s barbaric customs. This said, he is the product of this world, therefore what is normal to him can appear quite horrible for our contemporary minds, and with reasons. If he hates people to be abused, he does accept slavery as normal – like a Roman would have. This does not mean that we readers are supposed to agree with him, but actually the opposite. Although I was trembling with rage as soon as I reached page two – and my sentiments never wavered – my fury was focused on this world, as I’m sure the author intended to.

☑ If the world-building leaves several shadow zones and can’t be compared to the level of a full fantasy novel, in my opinion it wasn’t the point : Captive Prince: Volume One is character driven and the political machinations and cunning mostly made up for the relative lack of information about the ‘outside’ world. Early on my mind was reeling, and despite the fact that I guessed several outcomes, it didn’t diminished my enjoyment because –

Well, because –

Laurent. HOLY SHIT I CAN’T HATE HIM. He fascinates me way too much. Perhaps I should feel ashamed, given the fact that he’s a torturer son of a bitch for most of the novel but HEY! You’re talking to the girl who loves Jorg of Ancrath. So there’s that. You know you can’t trust me when it comes to COMPLEX and straight on CAPTIVATING villains. I just can’t. I’m sorry, blablabla, and all that. So, Laurent. He’s harsh, manipulative, intransigent, secret, unwilling to trust, multi-layered, HE MADE ME LAUGH (because dry humor is somehow right up my alley. WOOT!) – He also is growing. I cannot wait to see who he will become in the next books. (to be taken literally) (on to book 2 right now)

The grow of Damen and Laurent’s relationship is perfectly handled – there’s no romance here, guys. THANK YOU FOR SLOW BURN. Also, banter. Banter is EVERYTHING. Especially when it’s so subtle that every giggle comes with a gasp of surprise.

To conclude this review that is already way longer than I had expected (somehow it doesn’t come as a surprise), I’ll say that I was never bored – Not at any moment. Appalled, furious, captivated, curious, yes. Not bored.

This is quite a success. Color me surprised. No, scratch that : color me stunned instead. Beware, this does NOT mean that I would recommend this book to anyone. I WOULDN’T, because I’m not lying when I say that it’s really REALLY harsh and morally questionable. Please go warned.

BOOK REVIEW: The Year We Fell Apart

BOOK REVIEW: The Year We Fell ApartThe Year We Fell Apart by Emily Martin
Purchase on: AmazoniBooks
Add to: Goodreads
Synopsis:

In the tradition of Sarah Dessen, this powerful debut novel is a compelling portrait of a young girl coping with her mother’s cancer as she figures out how to learn from—and fix—her past.

Few things come as naturally to Harper as epic mistakes. In the past year she was kicked off the swim team, earned a reputation as Carson High’s easiest hook-up, and officially became the black sheep of her family. But her worst mistake was destroying her relationship with her best friend, Declan.

Now, after two semesters of silence, Declan is home from boarding school for the summer. Everything about him is different—he’s taller, stronger…more handsome. Harper has changed, too, especially in the wake of her mom’s cancer diagnosis.

While Declan wants nothing to do with Harper, he’s still Declan, her Declan, and the only person she wants to talk to about what’s really going on. But he’s also the one person she’s lost the right to seek comfort from.

As their mutual friends and shared histories draw them together again, Harper and Declan must decide which parts of their past are still salvageable, and which parts they’ll have to let go of once and for all.

In this honest and affecting tale of friendship and first love, Emily Martin brings to vivid life the trials and struggles of high school and the ability to learn from past mistakes over the course of one steamy North Carolina summer.

“I know what you’re probably thinking after tonight. But it’s not…I mean, people say things that aren’t…”

The rest dissolves on my tongue. Declan’s fingers graze my collarbone and grasp the chain of my necklace. He pulls it out from underneath my shirt and slides it down to the infinity pendant at the bottom before letting it go.
“I know who you are.”

Yeah yeah I know……I read this book a week or more ago. Well, I just now feel like reviewing it and I don’t feel like skipping it because I have some truly amazing gifs that fit this book and review perfectly. I don’t plan on saying much and I don’t want to ramble on; However, I have to say something….otherwise I would feel rather incomplete. And I HATE feeling incomplete. I’ve had to pass up way too many reviews due to time restraints and overlaps when reading too many books…and I don’t plan on continuing that trend more than I have to.

I drive home in silence. When I turn onto my street, I pull over and crank the radio up loud. I reach for the spare towel I keep in the backseat, roll it into a ball, and cover my mouth.
Scream until my voice goes hoarse.

This book. Hm. Well, I did really enjoy it-Honestly. But there was just so much that could have been done and handled differently that would have made this a definite five star-EASILY. As it was, too much grated and got under my skin for it to be more positive than negative. But then you flip the coin, and there was just
so much good
that had my heart soaring, my feels going haywire, and my smile exploding. And that is exactly why I’m not rating this book-Good or bad.

First ten years of friendship. The kind of friendship that means knowing everything there is to know about each other. Where every one of our scars is, and how we got them. The pitch of his laugh when he’s had a lot of sugar, or exactly what kind of coffee I need after a bad day. Friends who could spend twelve straight hours doing absolutely nothing and still want it to last twelve more. Who listen, even when the other is wrong; even when they’re not making sense. Friends who could be mad at the whole universe, but never got angry with each other for long. Who love each other unconditionally.

Even now, after having a week to think about what suits this book rating wise, I still can’t pin point my exact thoughts down to a rating and find any inflection one way or another. I guess that just goes to prove my point: I can reach into the recesses of my mind all I want, but it’s an equal amount of both positive and unhappy thoughts that resurface. And when I begin to rate it a 5, a 4, a 3, a 3.5, literally nothing feels right.

Then, six months of everything. A spring of skipped heartbeats every time he called me his girlfriend, then a summer of learning what being part of someone really meant. Six months of discovering the sound his heart makes with my head against his chest, and the taste of his tongue after he eats something salty. Or how his breath catches when I kiss his throat, and the way it tickles when he traces my collarbone. Two seasons of feeling more connected to a person than I ever thought possible.

And, in a weird way, that makes me extremely sad. I picked up this book and expected something spectacular. I wanted extreme gushing and unforgettable moments. I longed for passionate moments and flares of extreme emotion-either in hate or love, it didn’t matter. But what I got was a constant string of ups that were quickly followed by downs (mostly by our main character who had issues understanding the consequences of her actions).

Two polls pull me in opposite directions. There’s this girl I’ve been lately, the things I’ve done. And there’s the person I want to be. The girl Declan used to love. And right now I’m neither. I’m stuck, floating between the broken ends.

Harper was….a realistic girl. I’ll say that there were many, many moments where I could agree that I totally understood where she was coming from and might have even mimicked these actions at one point in my life (not the stupid make outs with a loser-REPEATEDLY-or the need to drink to drown my emotions). I, too, had-and still have-bouts where miscommunication was the only form of communication. It reeked havoc on my relationship with my parents and even with my now husband. So many simple little words, sentences, and even texts could have saved me a lot of heartache and prevented a lot of fights. Hey, I’m still trying to get the hang of it, honestly. But the absolute disregard for the obvious and the easy was just too much for me after a certain point (on Harper’s part)-and that point was about 50%.

“I know enough.” He wipes his hand across his mouth. “So what, you’re going to drive him home and then….”
I don’t know what he wants to hear, or whether I’m actually supposed to fill in the blank. I’m not even sure what he’s mad about anymore. But before I can get an answer out, Declan scowls again.
“Whatever. Do what you want. I just don’t like the way he looks at you.”
“Oh, okay, and how’s that?”
His eyes sink down to my necklace and he steps off the sidewalk. “Like you’re replaceable.”

And then Declan. Ah God, he wasn’t without his flaws, that’s for sure. He, too, had moments where the cluelessness could have been taken down a notch. Though..his was purposeful and with reason…So does that make it right or better? A little, if I’m being honest. For one, he didn’t do the whole running off to another girl shit. He loved Harper, it was clear, and never swayed from that. Even when he first got back, you could tell that he had never lost any love or feelings for her, despite whatever had went down. For two, he tried, repeatedly, to make things right. For three…who gives a fuck?? He was clearly more mature, clear-headed, and sure of what he wanted and chose to take higher roads, even after she INCESSANTLY added DANGEROUS speed bumps. Like, fuck sakes, MUST you run off to your asshole friend and smoke and drink every little time something goes wrong? He’s WATCHING OUT FOR YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR HEALTH, YOU LITTLE TWATWAFFLE! Oh yeah, and he’ll love you FOREVER. GAHD!

I nodded, but didn’t say anything until he gently tucked a curl behind my ear. “What am I to you?”
He recoiled from my question. “What are you? Harper, you’re everything.”

So..clearly the anger is still there. And clearly, even as I often sympathized with Harper, she also grated on my every nerve at a certain point. Neither were perfect, but I think it’s more than obvious Declan is the reason this book is so difficult to rate. His loyalty, his friendship, his kindness. Not to mention their mutual friends, both old and new, who were always there for them. Cory (O), Gwen (N), Mackenzie (N).

Declan takes a long breath, avoiding eye contact with me until he pulls himself together. We’re still sprawled out on the ground, and he props himself up on one elbow. He gestures to me.
“That’s the smile.”
I start giggling again. “What?”
His expression softens. He scratches above his eyebrow and shakes his head, suddenly looking almost bashful. “I’ve been waiting all summer to see that smile.”

A story of love lost and found again, given a second chance through mutual forgiveness, mistakes, hopes, and unrelenting belief in the love that was shared and of what could be. More than once I couldn’t breathe and had uncontrollable giggles that couldn’t be stifled. The butterflies from old flash backs, crushed feelings Declan’s face revealed, and new moments filled with curiosity and fumbling emotions that cease to let old feelings die weren’t in short supply. I can’t say I will rec this to anyone, nor can I put my Chelsea stamp of approval-Not enough impressed me to ask friends to give it a try. However, neither will I dismiss it and forget all about it-There was too much that I liked and multiple quotes I’ll never forget. I’m sorry to say that, even though I wrote a review, I am no help-Everyone is on their own. Sorry.

We can’t go back. The only way to change our past is by adding to it.

Final thoughts I forgot to put in (but still want to mention) but am too lazy to go add in somewhere:

-The problem that caused it all wasn’t what I wanted or expected it to be. It wasn’t bad…it was just kind of anti-climactic.
-The loose ends-there were quite a few… but isn’t that like life??
-The way some things were addressed but then never touched again
Writing was AMAZING

********

I have too many mixed emotions and a convoluted mess of thoughts. Extreme feels, lots of heartache.
Review MAYBE Monday
. Hopefully I’ll be able to decipher my emotions by then. ♥

Declan-5 stars
Harper-3 stars
Supporting friends and cast-5 stars
Her loser friends/Sadie-2 stars
Harper’s decision making skills-1 star

See?? No fucking clue…because…Declan. SO many passionate scenes with him and his deep-rooted love that are hard to forget that make my heart and mind do crazy things. Yikes. In troublleeeee.
