Synopsis:

For one charming playboy, getting cast on a Bachelor-esque reality TV show is the shock of a lifetime—until he finds love where he least expects it. And now the chase is on!

Gage Barrett’s reputation as a ladies’ man has been greatly exaggerated, but none of that matters after a drunken bet lands him on Jilted, a reality TV show that matches runaway grooms with wannabe brides. Now he’s stuck at a Hawaiian resort with nineteen women competing to drag him back to the altar—and one contestant who’s even more miserable than he is. Gage has no idea how feisty, independent Ellie Wright wound up in the cast, but it’s obvious she hates his guts. And if there’s one thing Gage likes, it’s a challenge. . . .

Ellie can’t believe she let her best friend talk her into exchanging her dignity for a glorified bikini contest. Still, she could use the exposure—her business is struggling—and she’ll probably be one of the first to get eliminated anyway. But Gage isn’t the shallow jerk Ellie anticipated—and he’s in no rush to send her home. As stolen kisses turn into secret trysts, she finds herself losing track of what’s real and what’s for the camera. With the wedding finale looming, this runaway groom is tempting Ellie to start believing in storybook endings.

Review:

Runaway Groom was hilarious, sigh worthy, crazy at times and so much fun!  If you’re a fan of the Bachelor, Bachlorette or Lauren Layne, then I have a feeling you’re going to absolutely love this book!  Back before I had kiddos, I’d get together with friends, make dinner and we’d eat, talk and laugh while watching those shows.  So when I heard that this book was going to be about a Bachelor-esque reality tv show I was sold.  I forgot how much I missed this type of drama in my life and I found myself laughing so hard I could barely breathe.

But once, just once, I want someone I care about to look at the crapshoot that is my life, to take in the Jilted contract and the Killboy movie shoots and the never-ending tabloid rumors and say, “Yeah, that stuff sucks, but Gage is worth it.”
I want to be worth it.
Just once.

Famous movie star and player extraordinaire, Gage Barrett, lost a drunken bet which landed him on the tv show Jilted.  It’s a lot like The Bachelor, except it’s about a past runaway groom (him) being matched up with potential brides.  And in the final episode, there’s to be a wedding.  While Gage stuck to his agreement to be on the show, he definitely wasn’t happy to be there.  And while he was grumpy about it, a tiny part of him couldn’t help but wonder if maybe this was for the best.  His heart was broken in the worst of ways and this could be the perfect distraction he needed.  Ohhh I absolutely loved Gage and his wounded, playful, seductive, charming ways.

“Send me home, Gage. Please. It’ll be better for both of us.”
He studies me. “You really want that?”
“I’m a businesswoman, not a groupie.”
He’s silent for a moment. “True. You did compare my eyes to avocados.”
“Exactly. You usually get, what . . . moss?”
His lips twitch, although the smile doesn’t reach his mossy eyes. “Emeralds, mostly.”
I turn away with a snort, opening the door slowly, listening for voices. When I’m met with only silence, I stick my head out.

To start the show off, Gage met all of the possible brides.  The shenanigans and drama started right from the get go, well until he met contestant Ellie Wright.  You see, Ellie is kinda like Gage, because she was not happy to be there either.  She never thought she’d make it as far as she did, and the only reason she was sticking it out was so her business could hopefully get some free publicity.  From the first time Ellie and Gage met, they got off on the wrong foot.  And it wasn’t the only time that happened lol.  The tension and emotions coming off of the both of them created a whole lot of banter that had me smiling, laughing and begging for more.

I want her lips against mine, her body under mine. I want her to sigh my name. I want to make her gasp. I want her to want me back, to fight for me.
But she won’t. I see it in the stubborn set of her chin, the confusion in her eyes, as though she can’t figure out why the hell I’ve singled her out.

But the story isn’t just about the two of them.  They’re in the middle of a reality show, and there’s also the producer, crew and all of the other woman.  And it was a crazy mesh with lots of drama behind the scenes.  The other women ranged from the sweet girl next door, to gorgeous supermodels to bat shit crazy.  Although there was wayyyyyyyy more contestants in that last category ha.  So we watched, along with Ellie, as these women would go to great lengths to get Gage’s attention or even spend a second of alone time with him.  The stuff that they would do was so insanely over the top, yet so perfect for reality tv, that I found myself laughing so hard that I just couldn’t stop the tears pouring down my face.  And it kept happening again and again.  If you adore hilarious drama, you’re definitely going to get your fill in this book.  I absolutely loved it!

For the second time today, my eyes sting with the threat of tears—for myself, yes, but also because I’ve been so damn worried about not letting him hurt me that I haven’t really realized . . . what if I hurt him?
And why does that bother me so much?

Shockingly in the middle of it all, Ellie and Gage found moments where they were alone with each other.  Where they were away from Jilted, the cameras and the other contestants.  And they started to see a different side to one anther.  Yet it’s all so complicated because Gage has a part to play in front of the camera and Ellie is stuck in her horrible assumption of who Gage is as a person.  And of course her thoughts are verified when he’s in front of the camera.  It was inevitable that feelings got hurt and I found my heart aching for the both of them.  But underneath it all, it created a whole lot of emotions and I loved when they were arguing.  They were intense and the tension between the two of them was electrifying.  It was so addicting and I couldn’t wait to see how it all played out!  So yes, I definitely recommend this book. Runaway Groom was sexy, hilarious and oh so addicting.  I absolutely loved it and I hope that if you give it a try, you’ll love it just as much as I did!

PS This book is a stand alone.  It’s characters aren’t found in the first book in this series, Ready to Run.

Synopsis:

"Doesn't matter who did it. Not anymore. I did the time. It's over."

When Drix was convicted of a crime--one he didn't commit--he thought his life was over. But opportunity came with the Second Chance Program, the governor's newest pet project to get delinquents off the streets, rehabilitated and back into society. Drix knows this is his chance to get his life back on track, even if it means being paraded in front of reporters for a while.

Elle knows she lives a life of privilege. As the governor's daughter, she can open doors with her name alone. But the expectations and pressure to be someone she isn't may be too much to handle. She wants to follow her own path, whatever that means.

When Drix and Elle meet, their connection is immediate, but so are their problems. Drix is not the type of boy Elle's parents have in mind for her, and Elle is not the kind of girl who can understand Drix's messy life.

But sometimes love can breach all barriers.

Fighting against a society that can't imagine them together, Drix and Elle must push themselves--Drix to confront the truth of the robbery, and Elle to assert her independence--and each other to finally get what they deserve.

Review:

Say You’ll Remember Me was a beautiful, tragic, heartwarming story that had my emotions all over the place.  I love that it reeled me in and that it felt as though I was right in the middle of their lives.  I loved even more that I got to feel every single smile, hope, hurdle and soul crushing moment with them.  So of course I found my heart beating faster at the tension between Elle and Drix.  I wanted them to have more.  So much more.  Ohhh I absolutely loved Say You’ll Remember Me and I can’t recommend it enough!

It’s like every time we try to dig out of a hole, someone’s shoveling more crap on top of us. There will never be a way out. – Drix

Stepping into the story, I was already a goner for Drix.  I always fall hard for the tortured hero, and he played the part so hauntingly well.  You see, he spent the last year of his life paying for a crime he didn’t commit.  Which was robbing a liquor store.  And he sacrificed himself to save one of those he loved. *clutches heart*  When he was released back to his family, Drix was lost, broken and unsure of himself and how he fit back into his life.  It wasn’t until he met Elle, at the Midway, that he finally felt as though he could be himself.  There was an ease between them that he wasn’t able to find with his friends or family.  But it was all so ironic, because Drix learned that Elle was the Governor’s daughter.  And Elle learned that Drix was the face and voice of the Governor’s “Second Chance” Program.  They shouldn’t be friends, let alone be anything more.  Yet fate had other plans for them.

“Do you always grow horns when you’re mad, or do you save that for me?” Drix stretches back out, too.
I sort of hate myself that my lips turn up. “Evidently just for you.”

So even though they came from opposite worlds, they clicked.  And the more time that Drix and Elle spent around each other on the campaign trail, a friendship easily formed.  I loved that their friendship consisted of them being brutally honest while also throwing jabs at each other.  It was impossible not to smile or laugh when they were near one other.  But as time went by, we got pulled deeper into their lives.  And we watched as hurt and pain bled from the pages.  It all tore at my heart, and I can’t even count how many times I cried or found myself sobbing.  The struggles, heart ache, betrayal and revelations for both Drix and Elle rocked me to the core.

“Elle, it’s okay.”
That’s the thing— it’s not okay. I’m seventeen years old, I don’t know who I am, and I don’t have any idea how to get my parents to take me seriously. I’m trapped, and I can’t breathe. – Elle

Thankfully we got to alternate between Elle and Drix.  So while I fell hard for Drix, I also found myself loving every single thing there was about Elle.  Elle was honest, strong, determined, found the good in people and she definitely didn’t have a problem speaking her mind.  Welllllll except certain moments with her parents.  And those moments hurt to watch, because while she loved so strongly, her parents idea of love didn’t always line up with mine.  Thankfully she now had Drix in her life, because they found solace with one another.  And that only pulled them closer together.  Their slow burn romance was super addicting and when you add in that they were forbidden in a way, it just upped my obsession with them!  Together they were sweet, sexy and such an honest relationship to watch unfold.

“Why can’t you be both?” she asks. “The guy who wants to kiss me and the good guy?”

On top of Elle and Drix, there was side characters that I loved so much.  Drix’s “family” was beyond amazing.  I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed that maybe someday there will be another book about his sister, brother or even best friend?!  Please??  Because I’d love to hear about their HEAs!  So yes.  I highly recommend this book!  And that’s huge for me since it had one of my triggers View Spoiler ».  Say You’ll Remember Me was such a beautiful story of love, friendship, redemption and doing what’s right, no matter the price.  And I absolutely loved it!

Excerpt:

[scroll-box]

~Ellison~

The two of us are different. Complete sliding scale different. The only thing we have in common, as far as I can tell, is that he appears about my age and that we are both wearing shoes. My sandals to his scuffed combat boots. His sagging jeans with rips and white T-shirt to my ironed khaki shorts and fitted blue top. My diamond earrings and gold bracelet with a heart charm to his black belt that has metal studs and silver chain that hangs from his belt loop to his wallet.

By looks, I should have more in common with the loser college boys, but it’s this guy I’m comfortable with. “What’s your name?”

He throws the ball, and he’s right, he sucks at it. While he has unbelievable power, his aim’s completely off. The ball hits the back curtain with a loud thud, then drops to the floor. “Drix.”

“Drix?” I repeat to make sure I heard him correctly.

“Drix. It’s short for Hendrix. Like Jimi Hendrix.”

“That’s cool.” Because it is.

I wait for him to ask for my name, but he doesn’t. Instead he says, “Are you here alone?”

He throws the second ball, and this time he hits the top of the three bottles, sending that one to the ground.

“No. My parents are here. I’m supposed to meet them at the convention center. What about you? What happened to the people you were with? Or are you here alone now?”

“Yes, but no.” Drix pulls his arm back, releases the ball, and when the ball hits the bottom bottles, my heart lifts with the idea that he won, but only one of the bottles goes flying. The other stays completely untouched.

He turns in my direction, but his gaze roams over my shoulder, then flickers to the left. Drix then glances behind him, and when he returns his attention to me he raises his eyebrows. “They appear to be gone.”

That’s awesome news, but I’m still stuck on his answer of “yes but no.” Honestly, I’m stuck on him. He’s a million questions without a single answer, and he makes me incredibly curious.

“My parents weren’t thrilled about me hanging out alone at the midway, but I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. It’s just Whack-A-Mole, you know?”

“And a ball toss.”

“And a ball toss. None of it should have been complicated.”

“Shouldn’t have been.”

“Elle!” Part of me is relieved to see Andrew craning his neck over the crowd. Another part of me is majorly disappointed. There aren’t many times in my life I’m left alone. Not many times I’m able to explore new places and people without someone hovering and not many opportunities when I would meet someone like Drix.

“Elle,” Andrew calls again. I wave at him, hoping it will buy me a few seconds, and he waves back in a way that tells me he needs me to walk in his direction. That works well for me.

“Is that a friend of yours?” Drix asks.

“Yes, but no.” I borrow his answer because it’s apropos. Andrew’s a few years older. More friend of our family than a personal friend of mine, and I don’t like the idea of explaining that my parents think I need a babysitter.

Drix’s mouth twitches at my words, and my lips also edge upwards. “I just made you smile a third time. Is this a Guinness Book of World Records thing?”

“I liked your answer.”

“I’m just creative like that.”

BOOK REVIEW – To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

BOOK REVIEW – To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra ChristoTo Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Purchase on: AmazoniBooks
Add to: Goodreads

Synopsis:

Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most—a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen or remain a human forever.

The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby—it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good—But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?

Review:

“You should pay less mind to fairy tales, Elian, or that’s all you’ll become.”

When he leaves, I think about if that would be awful, or beautiful. Could it really be such a bad thing, to become a story whispered to children in the dead of night? A song they sing to one another while they play.

I’ve gotten extremely lucky with my ARCs so far this year! While the writing in this one wasn’t exactly my cup of tea at first (I felt like there was a lot more telling than showing until later on in the book) that changed quickly. By the end of the book I was flying through the pages because I couldn’t get enough of the adventure or characters.

“That’s the thing about risks,” Kye says. “It’s impossible to know which ones are worth it until it’s too late.”

Coincidentally, even though I was named after the Little Mermaid, I have never bothered to read any of the books about mermaids that have been published in the world of YA. The ones that I have seen, seem to be a little too cheesy or have contemporary aspects that don’t appeal to me in any way. This book though, was about blood-thirsty sirens and pirates and was pure fantasy–just the way I like them.

Everything is muted and Lira swoops her blade down on mine once more, I let it all fall away. My mission, my kingdom. The world. They exist somewhere other than in this moment, and now there is only this. Me, my ship, and a girl with oceans in her eyes.

Without giving too much away there were vicious sirens who rip the hearts from princes, a curse that leaves one siren in particular with two legs (doesn’t that always seem to happen), a dashing prince who moonlights as a pirate, and an adventure to a faraway kingdom to change the world as said siren-turned-girl and prince know it. I very highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of nautical adventures and can appreciate a good enemies to lovers story thrown into the mix as well. I loved that while there was centuries worth of animosity between the sirens and mankind, Lira was able to break free of the preconceived notions that her horrible mother had pounded into her basically her whole life and rise above them. She learned to respect Elian’s crew and care for all of them and as a result…well you’ll see!

As far as I know this is a standalone and that’s okay. I usually love long YA fantasy series (other than waiting for the books to actually come out) but everything was wrapped up very nicely at the end of this one and you know without having to actually read about them that Elian and Lira will have plenty of adventures at sea for a very long time.

Become the queen we need you to be.

Synopsis:

The stunningly original, must-read fantasy of 2018 follows two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world...or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. If she fails, she will be executed...unless the trials kill her first.

A thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. Now, she believes herself untouchable--until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world--and of each other.

Review:

Welcome to my first review of the blog–the second and best book I’ve read so far this year! You’ll find that my reviews usually feature a lot of fangirling, capital letters, and all of my favorite quotes. I try to be as coherent as possible but when you find a book that you’re really passionate about, that can be hard sometimes. So without further ado, here it is, hope you enjoy!

OMGGGGGGGGG. This book. So far my 2018 read list, though only five books deep, has thoroughly impressed me. BUT THIS ONE ESPECIALLY!!!!!!!!!! As I mentioned above, you know that I generally like to add my favorite quotes from the book. Sometimes I find that even in a book with AMAZING writing, I will become so caught up in the story that I get to the end only to realize that I have highlighted nothing. That was the case here and it bummed me out super hard…guess I’ll just have to re-read it again soon to come up with some.

The basis for this story is a prophecy that has been told about a coming Blood Queen and Sun Queen. We learn right away in a crazy prologue that one of the main characters, Rielle, is the Blood Queen while her daughter will be the Sun Queen. You don’t see this super often in books but starting the book off knowing what Rielle’s fate was going to be along with still having 100 different questions about how things went to crap so fast had me on the edge of my seat for the entire book. So yes, like I said, we find out right away what role each has/will play and we also see the young princess being taken away to a safe place by a young boy named Simon while Rielle dies in her attempt to buy them enough time to escape *end scene*.

The rest of the book is told from the perspectives of Rielle, pre-Blood Queen and of her daughter Eliana, future Fire Queen (who we find out actually was thrown into the future a few hundred years during her jump with Simon as a baby). After an ambush on the prince, Rielle exposes the immense power that she and her father have tried to keep hidden the first half of her life and is then required to go through a series of trials to prove she is in control and could fit the role of Sun Queen as the prophecy has predicted (see I told you it’s interesting knowing ahead of time that that WON’T be how things play out…). Hundreds of years after the fact we follow her daughter, Eliana, who is basically a hired assassin for the Empire and knows nothing of her royal heritage. She may or may not eventually join up with some rebels and she may or may not end up finding a certain time traveling man again.

I don’t want to spoil anything else, just know that the book is chock-full of adventure, gruesome death, a dash of romance in both times, AND A LOT OF MAGIC AND SUSPENSE. I personally enjoyed reading about Eliana’s journey more because I was interested to see why the world ended up becoming how it was between her mother’s death and the present. I also wasn’t a huge fan of just how powerful Rielle was and the attitude that ensued because of that power. Though I was a HUGE fan of the forbidden romance between Rielle and a certain prince. Yum. I need to know how he dies though (not a spoiler, in the prologue). There also a great cast of supporting characters, LOVED Remy and Lu and basically everyone else that was introduced. Hated the villain with a passion, though I’ve seen some people liken him the Darkling—he seemed way slimier than that to me, *shrugs*.

The only warning I will give is that there is no major blow up at the end of this book so don’t be expecting one—which I was fine with. As I said, the entire book was so fast paced and intense, I was glad that the ending more or less was a gradual set up for more bat-shit craziness to ensue in the next book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
