FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 09/30/16

Friday Stars.13
Life:

Last weekend we got to spend part of a day at Firefest with some friends.  It’s an awesome event put on annually by our local firefighter stations.  They have fire trucks, ladder trucks, helicopters (for when you need transport to a hospital) and more!  All of our boys got to sit in them and learn how they operate, plus they got to put on firefighting equipment and squirt the fire hose at cones with the assistance of a firefighter.  Oh and they got to practice rolling out fire hoses with them too.  My favorite was watching them reenact what they do at a car crash – they had two cars crashed into each other and had to cut the roof off of one car and cut the door out of another car to rescue the people inside.  By the end, when they were putting out a burning car, I was exhausted for them!  It was such a wonderful day and I’m so grateful for all of the talented firefighters that work near us!  The event also reinforced my oldest son’s desire to be a firefighter when he grows up haha!  I hope you all had a lovely weekend too!

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

♥ Enjoy!

Just Finished and Loved:

through the ever night veronica rossiThrough the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky, #2) by Veronica Rossi Jen’s Review

5 Stars!  Through The Ever Night captivated my attention and made me an emotional mess.  I was constantly flitting between butterflies, smiles, devastation and heartache.  And by that last page, I realized that this series has easily become one of my favorite dystopian series ever!

The 2nd book in this trilogy!  In the first book, Under the Never Sky, Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive. A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria’s help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption.  In alternating chapters told in Aria’s and Perry’s voices, Under the Never Sky subtly and powerfully captures the evolving relationship between these characters and sweeps readers away to a harsh but often beautiful world. Continuing with Through the Ever Night and concluding with Into the Still Blue, the Under the Never Sky trilogy has already been embraced by readers in twenty-six countries and been optioned for film by Warner Bros.

the killer in me cover The Killer in Me by Margot Harrison

Hasn’t he lived long enough? Why not? I could take him like a thief in the night. This is how the Thief thinks. He serves death, the vacuum, the unknown. He’s always waiting. Always there. Seventeen-year-old Nina Barrows knows all about the Thief. She’s intimately familiar with his hunting methods: how he stalks and kills at random, how he disposes of his victims’ bodies in an abandoned mine in the deepest, most desolate part of a desert. Now, for the first time, Nina has the chance to do something about the serial killer that no one else knows exists. With the help of her former best friend, Warren, she tracks the Thief two thousand miles, to his home turf—the deserts of New Mexico. But the man she meets there seems nothing like the brutal sociopath with whom she’s had a disturbing connection her whole life. To anyone else, Dylan Shadwell is exactly what he appears to be: a young veteran committed to his girlfriend and her young daughter. As Nina spends more time with him, she begins to doubt the truth she once held as certain: Dylan Shadwell is the Thief. She even starts to wonder . . . what if there is no Thief? From debut author Margot Harrison comes a brilliantly twisted psychological thriller that asks which is more terrifying: the possibility that your nightmares are real . . . or the possibility that they begin and end with you?

roar-and-live-veronica-rossibrooke-veronica-rossiRoar and Liv (Under the Never Sky #0.5) & Brooke (Under the Never Sky #2.5) by Veronica Rossi

Before Perry and Aria, there was Roar and Liv.  FYI – Roar is Perry’s best friend and I’m so excited for this book!  And Brooke, well, she is Perry’s ex.  I have a pretty solid hate relationship with her, although I have liked her briefly for a moment or two.  Ironically I’m  excited to see her POV since her book takes place right after #2 ends and #3 begins.

aerie-maria-dahvana-headleyAerie (Magonia #2) by Maria Dahvana Headley (Releases 10/04)
The final book in the dulogy – although there is to be a novella afterwards!  In the first book, Magonia, Aza Ray Boyle is drowning in thin air. Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak—to live. So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of her medication. But Aza doesn’t think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.  Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who’s always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. Aza is lost to our world—and found, by another. Magonia.  Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power—but as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war between Magonia and Earth is coming. In Aza’s hands lies fate of the whole of humanity—including the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

I need to try the Under the Never Sky series already! Also, that firefest sounds amazing. 😀

    • Jen

YES! Under the Never Sky is such an amazing dystopian (besides the slow start in those first few chapters in the first book). I think you’d love meeting Perry. 🙂

  2. Lauren @ Always Me
