Synopsis:

Step right up and meet Jay Fields: Illusionist. Mentalist. Trickster.

I think in triangles. You think in straight lines.

I show you a table and make you believe it’s a chair.

Smoke and mirrors, sleight of hand, misdirection. I trick and deceive.

But most of all, I put on a good show.

The world thinks I killed a man, but I didn’t. Bear with me. It’s all a part of the plan.

Revenge is what I want. I want it for me and I want it for her.
I want it for all six of us.

She doesn’t remember me, but she’s the reason for everything. She’ll be my prize at the end of all this – if I can hold onto my willpower, that is. Maybe I’ll slip up a little, have a taste, just a small one.

So go ahead and pick a card. Come inside and see the show. Look at my hands, look so closely that you can’t see what’s happening while you’re so focused on looking. I’ll be destroying your world from right here in the spotlight.

You’ll never see me coming until it’s too late.

I’ve only got one heart, and after I’ve pulled off my grand deception I’ll hand it right to her.

So, sit back, relax, and let my girl tell you our story. You’re in for one hell of a ride.

When I start a New Adult book, I’m always really, really wary. I mean, I got bored or worse, pissed so many times that now I pop into vigilance mode right away. I thought I might not enjoy Six of Hearts. I was so wrong.

Banter everywhere. Now, I’ve never hidden that I’m a sucker for badinage and repartee, and let me tell you : these two make us feel the perfect kind of dizzy feels. That is to say, filled with giggles and irrepressible laughter.

Jay. You know what? My thoughts are all over the place as I’m. so. damn. confused. I tried to gather my thoughts and well, that was a pretty difficult task to do on a Sunday afternoon. Sorry, you’ll have to do with the rambling I wrote during my read.

It starts here
: Jay’s sexy you know AND he’s an illusionist. No joke, the guy can do some crazy stuff. Passionate and angry. Lunatic? Oh, right, and he’s a f*cking tease. But I forgive him. Absolutely straight-forward and yet vulnerable. And must I say? Freaking adorable at times. Frustrating, childish at some point, but who’s never? His inappropriate sexual comments are infuriating but seriously smile-worthy – filled with confidence but never disdain.

” He’s one of those people that you can’t tell if you want to be with him or just you want to be him.”

Okaaay, I’m completely aware I’m being contradictory. The thing is, a lot of things Jay does could be seen as abusive but, in the end, I can’t bring myself to think of him like that. I could overanalyze his behavior and taken one by one, some of his actions are debatable. But I don’t want to. Yes he’s infuriating and yes he pushes – a lot, but does he have bad intentions? Is he disrespectful towards Matilda? I don’t think so.

By the way, he is an absolute, complete, utter tease. I kind of adored that about him.

Matilda‘s awkwardness is seriously likeable – and funny. Oh, yes, funny. And the inner b*tch? You’re so damn right girl! Plus she owes me a couple face palms next to her comments. Moreover, thank you thank you, she’s not a virgin. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have any problem with twenty-something’s virginity, but that twist has been used so many times in New Adult that I have a hard time suffering it anymore. Matilda isn’t experienced, yet she’s not a virgin at 23 and her story is so much believable as it is. Overall, she can be seen as weak sometimes but that makes her more credible in my opinion, and who are we kidding? She deals with Jay for Pete’s sake, the girl does what she can.

An healthy and genuine relationship between Matilda and her best friend. Yay! I must admit that I was a bit wary at first, but as it turned out, Michelle is pictured like an actual friend and not in that bitchy way we often found in New-Adult. Plus, they aren’t any slut-shaming or girl-hate. Even if Matilda is fully aware of the way Jay captures women’s attention, and sometimes she gets jealous (who wouldn’t be?) but she never allows herself to be mean about that, and I found it very refreshing.

Revenge, guys! Jay’s plan is mischievous – Comte de Monte-Cristo’s devilish, and I enjoyed every second of it. I won’t say anything more, but trust me, the guy knows how to handle his reproaches. In a masterful way, no less.

“This is fucked up. This is… amazing. I can’t believe the sneaky, clever, trickster bastard managed to pull this off.”

Sexual tension. Remember when I said Jay was a tease? Yep. Also, I could feel the chemistry between Matilda and Jay from the beginning, and although it should be mandatory, that’s not always the case in NA so the only thing I can say is Bravo.

“It’s not weird. We’re bonding. Lots of animals sleep together in order to bond. Don’t you ever watch the Discovery Channel?”
“We’re not animals.”
He gives me a devilish grin. “Speak for yourself.”

Insta-love. Nope, that’s not right. Insta-lust. But then, the later doesn’t bother me as much as the first, because while I don’t believe in insta-love (sorry sorry romance) I can totally contemplate insta-lust. But still, as that happens to be one of my peeves, I have to count it as a cons.

✘ The mystery. While it makes Jay even more interesting to follow, I still guessed a major proportion of it almost instantly. Then, maybe we’re supposed too.

✘ I’m worse than a little kid with illusionists and magic so as you can guess, I’d have loved to read more about Jay’s capacities. Although I understand the author’s intends in the end – and I can agree with her statement to a certain extend – I can’t help but feel a bit cheated. Yeah, what a pouter kid I am.

✘ As I said earlier, even if I forgive him, some Jay’s actions can be considered as creepy. He does have good intentions, still his behavior is sometimes not far from where I draw the line between in love and stalkerish.

Overall, the pros overtake the cons by far, especially since what I despised can be justified by the plot’s needs. Then, as always when I enjoy a New-Adult book, I end a bit stunned, slightly dizzy, and definitely happy about it.

Synopsis:

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

Review:

There is a good chance that I may become slightly obsessed with this series. Why? Because of our protagonist, Mac, and the intricate story that unfolds. Mac has this way of slowly reeling you into caring for her. Before I knew it, I was right alongside her feeling every bit as anxious and confused while the craziness swam around us. Because what started out as a trip to discover who murdered Mac’s sister, turned into a story that was filled with rich history and mysteries at every turn. Be careful, because before you know it, Darkfever’s suspenseful, sarcastic, page-turning story could suck you right in too!

Before, I thought I knew everything. I thought I knew who I was, where I fit, and exactly what my future would bring. Before, I thought I knew I had a future. After, I began to discover that I’d never really known anything at all.

The story starts out with Mac receiving a call that her sister has been murdered while studying abroad in Ireland. Upon facing the horrors of having to identify her mutilated body, Mac is convinced that she has to set matters right. She will go to Irelend and push the police to solve her sisters murder. But upon arrival, “things” keep interfering with her ability to move ahead. She starts to see evil, disgusting creatures that were just human a second ago, she hears words she doesn’t understand, she finally discovers a horrifying message from her sister on her phone, and she meets a man that pulls her deeper into the twisted world of the Fae. Or as I like to put it….the story becomes more and more addicting as we discover random pieces of the puzzle.

“I tend bar. I like music. My sister was murdered recently. I seem to have gone insane since then,” I added this last almost conversationally.

Mac is, ha, well, Mac is someone you would not expect. She is a 22 year old girl who loves her pink fingernail and toenail polish, dressing stylish and keeping herself bronzed and beautiful. YET the internal Mac is the polar opposite. She is sarcastic. She is witty. And most importantly she is determined! As each chapter progressed and the more I learned about Mac, I shockingly went from meh to I-love-this-girl! It also helped that she tries her damnedest to stand up to Barrons. Because she was 100% correct when she said he was a dickhead!

He just didn’t look like the kind of creep that would messily murder a woman in her hotel room; he looked like the kind of creep that would line her up in the sights of his assassin’s rifle without a shred of emotion.

Jericho Barrons, aka Barrons, is an ass. He is not what I wanted for the main male, but shoot me now…..I like trying to hate him! I know, so, so, so wrong! As I was saying, he is an ass, his proper talk is annoying as hell, his lack of compassion makes me want to cause him physical harm and I loath how he calls Mac Ms. Lane. Yet……and I hate this yet……..he is perfect for this book. I liked that he tries to help Mac find her sister’s murderer, despite his screwed up ways and selfish reasons. I loved how Barrons is a huge mystery since we don’t really know who and what he is. I have three guesses, but it’s driving me crazy that I can’t solidify any one of my theories!

You want to believe in black and white, good and evil, heroes that are truly heroic, and villains that are just plain bad, but I’ve learned in the past year that things are rarely so simple. The good guys can do some truly awful things, and the bad guys can sometimes surprise the heck out of you.

Although I was a little slow to warm up to Darkfever, I can’t wait to fly through the rest of this series. I’m hoping that an element that is introduced to us in the first book continues! Mac talks to us and she would point out something that would affect her later on, or explain how she was oblivious to the current situation. I loved how that read and how that pulled me into the story even more! But I I do have one small issue with this book and that is in regards to V’lane, an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction to human women, and the scenes that contain him and Mac. They rubbed me the wrong way View Spoiler » and I’m hoping that will somehow become resolved in future books or my mind.

Summary of each book:

ugly love colleen hooverUgly Love by Colleen HooverI loved this book that is wholly controversial. I loved that Miles was a jealous, possessive, closed off ass. I loved Tate with her fragile heart and their stolen moments. I loved it all.  When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn’t think it’s love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.  Never ask about the past.  Don’t expect a future.  They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.  Chelsea’s Review

Rule is everything a straight-A pre-med student like Shaw shouldn’t want – and the only person she’s never tried to please. She isn’t afraid of his scary piercings and tattoos or his wild attitude. Though she knows that Rule is wrong for her, her heart just won’t listen.  To a rebel like Rule Archer, Shaw Landon is a stuck-up, perfect princess – and his dead twin brother’s girl. She lives by other people’s rules; he makes his own. He doesn’t have time for a good girl like Shaw – even if she’s the only one who can see the person he truly is.  But a short skirt, too many birthday cocktails and spilled secrets lead to a night neither can forget. Now, Shaw and Rule have to figure out how a girl like her and a guy like him are supposed to be together without destroying their love…or each other.  Jen’s Review

shine-not-burn-elle-caseyShine Not Burn by Elle CaseyHoly hot cowboys, I love this book! I laughed A LOT, Mack is sooo sexy, Andie is a hysterical drunk, the chemistry between the two of them is HOT and the story reads as though you are watching a movie.  IT HAPPENED IN VEGAS. I can’t be held responsible. Things that happen there are supposed to stay there, right? Right? Yeeeah. Not so much.   Andie’s just days away from tying the knot, but there’s just ooooone little glitch. Apparently, she’s already married. Or someone with her name is married to a guy out in Oregon of all places, and the courthouse won’t issue her a marriage license until it’s all cleared up. Tripping her way through cow pies and country songs to meet up with a man who gets around places on horseback is her very last idea of how to have a good time, but if she’s going to get married, make partner at the firm, and have two point five kids before she’s thirty-five, she needs to get to the bottom of this snafu and fix it quick … before her fiance finds out and everything she’s been working toward goes up in flames.  Jen’s Review

They are sweet, sensual and have just enough angst to drive me the right kind of crazy.  Teresa Hamilton is having a rough year—she’s in love with her big brother’s best friend, but he hasn’t spoken to her since they shared a truly amazing, mind-blowing, life-changing kiss. Then she got out of a terrible relationship. Now an injury is threatening to end her dance career for good. It’s time for plan B: college. And maybe she’ll have a chance to convince Jase that what they have together is real.  Jase Winstead has a huge secret that he’s not telling anyone—especially not his best friend’s incredibly beautiful sister. after the kiss lauren layneAfter the Kiss by Lauren LayneThis one by far had the most painful explosion between the two leads, making my heart tear in two, but it was a beautiful disaster and I loved it.  Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more.  Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.  Chelsea’s Review

But when a Las Vegas bachelorette party goes awry and an uptight businessman mistakes Sophie for a prostitute . . . well, Sophie wonders if it’s time to reevaluate her priorities. Swearing off her thigh-high boots for good, Sophie slinks back home with damaged pride-and a jackpot of a hangover.  Yet what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay there. On a trip to Seattle to open a new office, Grayson Wyatt meets his latest employee-who turns out to be the same woman he recently called a hooker. Wealthy and gorgeous, Gray is a man used to getting what he wants. And it doesn’t take long to figure out that smart, sassy, sexy Sophie is everything he’s been looking for. As their late nights at the office turn into hot morning-afters, they realize their Vegas misunderstanding may lead to the real thing . . .  Cheslea’s Review

Jellicoe Road melina marchettaJellicoe Road by Melina MarchettaWell, you have seen me gushing frantically obsessing over this book for a while now, so you know you have to brace yourself because this book? It possibly became my favorite. Ever. That kind of means something when we read a million book a year, right?  Abandoned by her mother on Jellicoe Road when she was eleven, Taylor Markham, now seventeen, is finally being confronted with her past. But as the reluctant leader of her boarding school dorm, there isn’t a lot of time for introspection. And while Hannah, the closest adult Taylor has to family, has disappeared, Jonah Griggs is back in town, moody stares and all. Anna’s Review

the piper's son melina marchettaThe Piper’s Son by Melina MarchettaPsss! Hey, you, readers! Months after my reading I still find me thinking about Tom and his family, inside in knots, and that’s so rare I couldn’t not acknowledge that feeling. Please, if you feel the urge to step out your comfort zone, just try it.   The story reopens the group of friends from her acclaimed novel Saving Francesca – but five years have passed, and now it’s Thomas Mackee who needs saving. After his favorite uncle was blown to bits on his way to work in a foreign city, Tom watched his family implode. He quit school and turned his back on his music and everyone that mattered, including the girl he can’t forget. Shooting for oblivion, he’s hit rock bottom, forced to live with his single, pregnant aunt, work at the Union pub with his former friends, and reckon with his grieving, alcoholic father. Tom’s in no shape to mend what’s broken. But what if no one else is either? An unflinching look at family, forgiveness, and the fierce inner workings of love and friendship, The Piper’s Son redefines what it means to go home again. Anna’s Review

me and earl and the dying girl jesse andrewsMe and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews To read this book was the best and the worst idea I could have : – Perfect because I couldn’t stop laughing.  – Not-so-perfect because I couldn’t stop laughing in public. Out loud.  Up until senior year, Greg has maintained total social invisibility. He only has one friend, Earl, and together they spend their time–when not playing video games and avoiding Earl’s terrifying brothers–making movies, their own versions of Coppola and Herzog cult classics. Greg would be the first one to tell you his movies are f*@$ing terrible, but he and Earl don’t make them for other people. Until Rachel. Rachel has leukemia, and Greg’s mom gets the genius idea that Greg should befriend her. Against his better judgment and despite his extreme awkwardness, he does. When Rachel decides to stop treatment, Greg and Earl make her a movie, and Greg must abandon invisibility and make a stand. Anna’s Review

all our yesterdays christin terrillAll Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill – A compelling, fascinating and fast-paced plot served by a never boring writing.  You have to kill him. Only Em can complete the final instruction. She’s tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present—imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside. Marina has loved her best friend James since the day he moved next door when they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America’s most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too. But on one disastrous night, James’s life crumbles apart, and with it, Marina’s hopes for their future. Now someone is trying to kill him. Marina will protect James, no matter what. Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover– When Warren has the opportunity to live with a female roommate, he instantly agrees. It could be an exciting change.  Or maybe not.  Especially when that roommate is the cold and seemingly calculating Bridgette. Tensions run high and tempers flare as the two can hardly stand to be in the same room together. But Warren has a theory about Bridgette: anyone who can hate with that much passion should also have the capability to love with that much passion. And he wants to be the one to test this theory.  Will Bridgette find it in herself to warm her heart to Warren and finally learn to love?  Maybe.  Maybe not.
