Just Finished and Loved:

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater Anna’s Review

5 Stars!  I reckon the reasons for which The Scorpio Races weaved itself throughout my beloved favorites could cause an opposite reaction to other readers. Do I care, though? No, because every slow-paced page, every heartfelt and beautiful sentence, every haunting and atmospheric landscape, every inch of Sean’s bloody-stained jacket and killer horse reminds me that if nothing else, The Scorpio Races has a soul, and I’m consumed by it.

Some race to win. Others race to survive.  It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.  Some riders live.  Others die.  At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.  Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a choice. So she enters the competition – the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.  As she did in her bestselling Shiver trilogy, author Maggie Stiefvater takes us to the breaking point, where both love and life meet their greatest obstacles, and only the strong of heart can survive. The Scorpio Races is an unforgettable reading experience.

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab  Chelsea’s Review

5 Stars!  Strange, beautiful, vivid, imaginative, and oh so creative with a cast of characters that sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Kell is one of the last Travelers—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes—as such, he can choose where he lands.  There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there’s Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne—a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London…but no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see—a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.  But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive—and that is proving trickier than they hoped.

Withering Hope by Layla Hagen – Aimee’s wedding is supposed to turn out perfect. Her dress, her fiancé and the location—the idyllic holiday ranch in Brazil—are perfect.  But all Aimee’s plans come crashing down when the private jet that’s taking her from the U.S. to the ranch—where her fiancé awaits her—defects mid-flight and the pilot is forced to perform an emergency landing in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.  With no way to reach civilisation, being rescued is Aimee and Tristan’s—the pilot—only hope. A slim one that slowly withers away, desperation taking its place. Because death wanders in the jungle under many forms: starvation, diseases. Beasts.  As Aimee and Tristan fight to find ways to survive, they grow closer. Together they discover that facing old, inner agonies carved by painful pasts takes just as much courage, if not even more, than facing the rainforest.  Despite her devotion to her fiancé, Aimee can’t hide her feelings for Tristan—the man for whom she’s slowly becoming everything.  You can hide many things in the rainforest. But not lies. Or love.  Withering Hope is the story of a man who desperately needs forgiveness and the woman who brings him hope. It is a story in which hope births wings and blooms into a love that is as beautiful and intense as it is forbidden.

 ✩✮✩✮✩

Soldier (Talon #3) by Julie Kagawa – In the first book, Talon, Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they’re positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.  Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.  Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon’s newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey—and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember’s bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him—and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

Suffer Love by Ashley Herring Blake – Sam Bennett falls for Hadley St. Clair before he knows her last name. When Sam finds out she is that St. Clair, daughter of the man who destroyed Sam’s family, he has a choice: follow his heart or tell the truth about the scandal that links their families. Funny and passionate, Suffer Love is a story about first love, family dysfunction, and the fickle hand of fate.

On Fridays, we take a look at what has happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

Life:

I have officially joined the club of being a sports mom!  My oldest had his first game of t-ball this week, and………..I’m beyond clueless.  While my husband played baseball, and other sports, from the age of 5 until he graduated high school, I never played any organized sports.  At all.  I spent my summers camping and wakeboarding and my winters snowboarding.  So it feels like I’ve stepped into a whole new world.  Not only did I teach my son to run the wrong way for when we were practicing baseball in our backyard these last few months……I didn’t know 1st base was on the right and not the left lol.  But the whole scheduling dinner at weird hours is little funky to get use to too.  But in these last few weeks of practices and a game under our belt, I love how much fun my son is having!  And my husband too, since he gets to volunteer and be out there with the kids.  My heart always feels all warm and fuzzy when we are walking off the field, especially since they don’t keep scores and everyone gets a turn at the age of 5.  It has been a great experience so far, and now I feel ready to tackle all of the other sports he wants to try!  Am I alone in my cluelessness of organized sports?  Or did you play sports or have kids that play sports in school?

Glitterland (Glitterland #1) by Alexis Hall
5 Stars!  If I cannot, and will never really understand what depression is, not because of a lack of empathy, but because witnessing it doesn’t mean understanding it, even if you want to, rare are the times when I read a book that captures the core of it and manages to make me approach understanding. Glitterland is one of these books. That heartbreaking, beautiful book.  I will cherish it forever.
Anna’s Review
Once the golden boy of the English literary scene, now a clinically depressed writer of pulp crime fiction, Ash Winters has given up on love, hope, happiness, and — most of all — himself. He lives his life between the cycles of his illness, haunted by the ghosts of other people’s expectations.  Then a chance encounter at a stag party throws him into the arms of Essex boy Darian Taylor, an aspiring model who lives in a world of hair gel, fake tans, and fashion shows. By his own admission, Darian isn’t the crispest lettuce in the fridge, but he cooks a mean cottage pie and makes Ash laugh, reminding him of what it’s like to step beyond the boundaries of anxiety.  But Ash has been living in his own shadow for so long that he can’t see past the glitter to the light. Can a man who doesn’t trust himself ever trust in happiness? And how can a man who doesn’t believe in happiness ever fight for his own?

I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios – If seventeen-year-old Skylar Evans were a typical Creek View girl, her future would involve a double-wide trailer, a baby on her hip, and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell. But after graduation, the only thing standing between straightedge Skylar and art school are three minimum-wage months of summer. Skylar can taste the freedom—that is, until her mother loses her job and everything starts coming apart. Torn between her dreams and the people she loves, Skylar realizes everything she’s ever worked for is on the line.  Nineteen-year-old Josh Mitchell had a different ticket out of Creek View: the Marines. But after his leg is blown off in Afghanistan, he returns home, a shell of the cocksure boy he used to be. What brings Skylar and Josh together is working at the Paradise—a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99. Despite their differences, their shared isolation turns into an unexpected friendship and soon, something deeper.

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 04/08/16

Since it’s almost the weekend, lets look back over what has happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!
♥ Enjoy!

Life:

Happy Friday!  I’m so happy to have made it almost to the weekend! *soooo close!!!!*  So where was I last Friday?  Lemme tell ya….I was traveling to California to visit family and friends.  I had put together the majority of the post that Monday, and I knew that I would have a few minutes that Thursday night to finalize the details.  Yeah, that so did not happen lol.  Come Thursday morning, one of my family members in Cali got so sick that we had to spend the day at doctor appointments, then the ER, and then they finally got admitted into the hospital at 2am.  Longest day ever!  And after a few days, life slowly got back to normal, we traveled back home and then all four of us got sick.  I have had some crazy, no sleep Spring Breaks in my teens and early 20s but not that kinda crazy no sleep Spring Breaks.  I think there must be an award somewhere for most epic failure attempt at a Spring Break.  It has to exist!  This was definitely a first for me, but have you had a vacation go completely wrong too?  If so, sending hugs your way.

5 Stars!  LOOK OUT, FANTASY WRITERS! SEE THIS BOOK?  *pushes The Crimson Crown in your hands*  SEE THIS?  LOOK AT IT! JUST LOOK AT IT!  This is how you end a series : BLOODY. FABULOUS.
Anna’s Review & Chelsea’s Review
In the first book, The Demon King – Times are hard in the mountain city of Fellsmarch. Reformed thief Han Alister will do almost anything to eke out a living for himself, his mother, and his sister Mari. Ironically, the only thing of value he has is something he can’t sell. For as long as Han can remember, he’s worn thick silver cuffs engraved with runes. They’re clearly magicked—as he grows, they grow, and he’s never been able to get them off.

Oblivion (Nevermore #3) by Kelly Creagh
5 Stars!
Epic. Beautiful. Heart-wrenching. Perfection. This series is just so addicting…I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.
Chelsea’s Review
In the first book, Nevermore, page-turning psychological mystery that is equal parts horror, humor, and romance, Nevermore is the story of Varen—a Poe fan and Goth—and Isobel—a cheerleader and unlikely heroine. When an English Lit. project pairs the two, Isobel finds herself swept into Varen’s world, one that he has created in his notebook and in his mind, one where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life. Isobel slowly learns that dreams and words can be much more powerful than she’d ever imagined. As labels of “Goth” and “cheerleader” fade away, Isobel and Varen slip into a consuming romance, braced against the ever-clearer horror that the most chilling realities are those within our own minds. When Isobel has a single chance to rescue Varen from the shadows of his nightmares, will she be able to save him—and herself?

Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins
5 Stars!  This series continues to be a favorite, and I can’t wait to see how the ending unfolds. If you are a paranormal lover, then I really think you would enjoy this series too!  Jen’s Review
In the first book, Sweet Evil  – What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences? This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.  Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.  Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

Nevermore (Nevermore #1) by Kelly Creagh
5 Stars!
Omg this book…it was beyond words spectacular and out of this world amazing.  Chelsea’s Review
A page-turning psychological mystery that is equal parts horror, humor, and romance, Nevermore is the story of Varen—a Poe fan and Goth—and Isobel—a cheerleader and unlikely heroine.

Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy #1) by Wendy Higgins5 Stars!  Sweet Evil was breathtakingly perfect. Fuel the Fire (Calloway Sisters #3; Addicted #3.1) by Krista Richie5 Stars  If I wasn’t laughing out loud or giggling or sighing or my heart wasn’t beating out of my chest and stomach erupting with butterflies, I was tearing up….or bawling.  Protect your family. At all costs.  It’d take the impossible to hurt Connor Cobalt, even for a moment.  Protect your family. At all costs.  At twenty-six, his narcissistic tendencies have made room for the people he loves.  Protect your family. At all costs.  And he loves Rose. But when his love is threatened, when his greatest dreams with her are compromised — what is the cost then?  Protect your family. At all costs.  Love will guide his choices.  For the first time in his life.  Chelsea’s Review

Yellow Brick War (Dorothy Must Die #3) by Danielle Paige– In the first book, Dorothy Must Die, I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero. But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?  Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a road of yellow brick—but even that’s crumbling.  What happened? Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.  My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas. I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I’ve been trained to fight. And I have a mission: Remove the Tin Woodman’s heart. Steal the Scarecrow’s brain. Take the Lion’s courage. And—Dorothy must die.

The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns #1) by Rae Carson – Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness.  Elisa is the chosen one. But she is also the younger of two princesses. The one who has never done anything remarkable, and can’t see how she ever will.  Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king–a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs her to be the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.  And he’s not the only one who seeks her. Savage enemies, seething with dark magic, are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people’s savior, and he looks at her in a way that no man has ever looked at her before. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.  Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young. Most of the chosen do.
