FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 02/03/17

Friday Stars.13
Life:

Last Saturday my son got to have his 1st ever birthday party with all of his classmates and friends.  We had it at the local gymnastics center, and they were all so adorable to watch!  We only had one hiccup the whole party.  By the time the 3rd kiddo, which was the birthday boy himself, got up to the pinata, he completely decimated it.  The kids were screaming and running for the candy and all of us adults were like uhhhh what happened lol.  So needless to say, it was perfect timing that this week was tball signups.  Both of my boys are now signed up and they can’t wait for the season to begin Mid March. 🙂  Here’s hoping you all had a great week too.

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

adorkable-cookie-ogormanAdorkable by Cookie O’GormanJen’s Review

4.5 Stars! Adorkable was filled with laughter, butterfly and smile inducing moments, and I couldn’t get enough of it!

Adorkable (ah-dor-kuh-bul): Descriptive term meaning to be equal parts dorky and adorable. For reference, see Sally Spitz.
Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she’s done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There’s only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take.
Her solution: she needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.
Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around-hottie, and Sally’s best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He’d do anything for Sal–even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she’s “more than pretty,” and expertly kissing her at parties.
The problem: Sally’s been in love with Becks all her life–and he’s completely clueless.
This book features two best friends, one special edition Yoda snuggie, countless beneath-the-ear kisses and begs the question:
Who wants a real boyfriend when faking it is so much more fun?

guardian-of-secrets-brenda-drakeGuardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2) by Brenda Drake
The story continues!  In the first book, Thief of Lies, Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels-magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books-rescue them from a demonic hound.
Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 01/27/17

Friday Stars.13
Life:

Have you ever embarrassed yourself?  I haven’t in the last few years, and then in the last few months I have had two *cringe while hiding your face and hope the ground opens up and swallows you whole* episodes.  This latest one I only have myself to blame *sigh*.  I made the stupid mistake of texting my son’s 19 year old male swim teacher, instead of my bestie.  It sounds harmless, but our texts are a little ridiculous.  This one involved a Scrubs meme about raising kids together even though we aren’t ever going to be married, and then I rambled on about how my glutes hurt….not bad so far right?!  I totally could have shrugged that off.  But then I went on to say that I can FINALLY take my shirt off today without being in pain and that I’d see you in a bit hooker.  Oh man, so unprofessional!  He laughed at me in his text back, has probably not even thought about that text since then, but I’m still so embarrassed.  And today we have lessons in the afternoon, since there was a huge snowstorm and even schools were closed on Monday.  So yeah.   Here’s hoping that my face isn’t bright red, and that I don’t stumble over my words when we talk lol.  It’s gonna be a fabulous day lol!

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

Just Finished and Loved:

homegoing_coverHomegoing by Ya GyasiAnna’s Review

5 Stars!  I can’t help writing about Homegoing for the simple reason that it is BRILLIANT. I don’t even know how many times I fell in love and got my heart broken but DAMN IT WAS WORTH IT.

Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia, her sister, Esi, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade, and shipped off to America, where her children and grandchildren will be raised in slavery. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children into America. From the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration, from the coal mines of Pratt City, Alabama, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem, right up through the present day, Homegoing makes history visceral, and captures, with singular and stunning immediacy, how the memory of captivity came to be inscribed in the soul of a nation.

punk 57 penelope douglasPunk 57 by Penelope DouglasJen’s Review

5 Stars!  Punk 57 was beautifully deep, insanely seductive and emotionally raw.  I was addicted just from the first page, and this book was impossible to put down.

“We were perfect together. Until we met.”
Misha
I can’t help but smile at the words in her letter. She misses me.
In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.
It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…
And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.
Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.
We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?
Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?
F*ck it. I need to meet her.
I just don’t expect to hate what I find.

Ryen
He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.
Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his number or picture or something.
He could be gone forever.
Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

caraval-stephanie-garberCaraval (Caraval #1) by Stephanie GarberChelsea’s Review

5 Stars! Not for a long time have I found a more satisfying mix of sexy, fun, and smoldering hot hate.

Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world . . .
Welcome, welcome to Caraval―Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

by-your-side-kasie-westBy Your Side by Kasie West (Releases 01/31)
When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.
Only he doesn’t come. No one does.
Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn at first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 01/20/17

Friday Stars.13
Life:

This last Saturday, I decided to get back into shape.  My boys have weekly swim lessons and we also have play dates at our local pool, and it’s killing me that I’m not in there playing with them.  Especially since the pool in our town is amazing!  Just indoors alone there are three pools and a splash pool.  So a few of my friends and I decided to work as a team with a goal in mind.  We are going to be swimsuit ready by our kid’s Spring Break.  Oh my gosh lol!!  We text each other after we finish our workouts and I also ended up downloading FitNotes on my phone so I can hold myself accountable.  We have 12 weeks to reach our goal.  It sounds like enough time.  And here’s hoping it is, but I’m nervous at the same time because it’s only 12 weeks!  Wish me luck, I’m going to need it lol!

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

The Hating GameThe Hating Game by Sally ThorneChelsea’s Review

5 Stars! The sarcastic looks, the not-so-nasty banter, and every little thing in between…this book has it all. But, most of all…It has Joshua Templeman

Nemesis (n.) 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome.
                       2) A person’s undoing
                       3) Joshua Templeman

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.
Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 01/13/17

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 01/13/17

Life:

This past week our lives have been inundated with snow.  Tahoe is at almost 200 inches in less than two weeks, and I could not be happier (well except for the rain that we had that melted the snow and caused severe flooding and then we lost power when it was 20 degrees outside but we’re back to snow again as of yesterday yay!)!  I was California born and raised, but I have lived on the Nevada side of Tahoe for the last 10+ years.  And while I thought I’d miss the ocean, I’ve come to realize that I love every single thing about this area.  The ski resorts, the beaches that are beyond gorgeous, the hiking, the small town feel, the list just goes on and on.  I am so grateful we live here and I am definitely counting the seconds until our 3 day weekend begins and we can enjoy every moment of sledding, snowboarding, and hiking!  Here’s hoping you have a wonderful weekend planned too!

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

♥ Enjoy!

“We were perfect together. Until we met.”
Misha
I can’t help but smile at the lyrics in her letter.
I should’ve gotten his phone number or picture or something.
He could be gone forever.
Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

Upcoming Releases:

carve-the-mark-veronica-rothCarve the Mark (Untitled Duology #1) by Veronica Roth  (Releases 01/17) – (Chelsea’s Review)
On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, in a galaxy where some are favored by fate, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not—their gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reclaim their gifts, their fates, and their lives, and reset the balance of power in this world?
Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power—something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.
Akos is from the peace-loving nation of Thuvhe, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Though protected by his unusual currentgift, once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive—no matter what the cost. When Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. They must decide to help each other to survive—or to destroy one another.

heart-stone-elle-katharine-whiteHeartstone by Elle Katharine White  (Releases 01/17)
A debut historical fantasy that recasts Jane Austen’s beloved Pride & Prejudice in an imaginative world of wyverns, dragons, and the warriors who fight alongside them against the monsters that threaten the kingdom: gryphons, direwolves, lamias, banshees, and lindworms.
They say a Rider in possession of a good blade must be in want of a monster to slay—and Merybourne Manor has plenty of monsters.
Passionate, headstrong Aliza Bentaine knows this all too well; she’s already lost one sister to the invading gryphons. So when Lord Merybourne hires a band of Riders to hunt down the horde, Aliza is relieved her home will soon be safe again.
Her relief is short-lived. With the arrival of the haughty and handsome dragonrider, Alastair Daired, Aliza expects a battle; what she doesn’t expect is a romantic clash of wills, pitting words and wit against the pride of an ancient house. Nor does she anticipate the mystery that follows them from Merybourne Manor, its roots running deep as the foundations of the kingdom itself, where something old and dreadful slumbers . . . something far more sinister than gryphons.
It’s a war Aliza is ill-prepared to wage, on a battlefield she’s never known before: one spanning kingdoms, class lines, and the curious nature of her own heart.

FRIDAY STARS – Your Weekly Must Knows 01/06/17

Friday Stars.13
Life:

Yesterday was my oldest son’s birthday, and he turned 6.  He wanted to go bowling, so we headed off to our local bowling alley with the 4 of us, my mom, dad, Grandma and my best friend and her 21 month old son.  Watching him throw the ball, I have no clue how he did as well as he did lol.  It was a spectacle and so hysterical.  But the best part was that it didn’t matter if him or his brother knocked down 1 pin or 6 pins, each time they bowled they would jump around while clapping.  It was so adorable!  We then finished off the evening by coming back to our house and having pizza, cake (he wanted chocolate cake, chocolate filling and chocolate frosting – oh my gosh the cake was so rich but yummy!) and presents.  I’m so sad he’s growing up so fast *cries*, but I’m so happy for the cheerful, friendly, lovable little man he is growing into.  Here’s hoping you all had a fabulous week too.

In case you aren’t familiar with our Friday Star Posts, we like to take a look at what’s happened around here in the last week, what’s coming up that we are excited about and anything else that we may have to share!

♥ Enjoy!

thief of lies brenda drake library jumpersThief of Lies (Library Jumpers #1) by Brenda Drake
*Currently re-reading and this time around I’m connecting with the characters and loving.  I’ll be re-writing my review*
Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Parislibrary, where Arik and his Sentinels-magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books-rescue them from a demonic hound.
